There isn't much to do here if you're looking for some excitement, but the neighbouring suburb of Krugersdorp, merely a few minutes drive away, does offer a variety of activities for a fun day out with family and friends.

Krugersdorp

Known as the industrial hub, Krugersdorp is another mining town in the far West Rand. With a history that dates back to the Gold Rush, the area has interesting and unique old buildings and churches that are worth visiting and exploring. Krugersdorp offers more on the business and entertainment front. Here, you'll find a bustling business centre, shopping malls and outdoor adventure activities just short drive away. One of the big attractions to the area include the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, offering a variety of outdoor activities such as self game drives, free 4x4 routes, a reptile park, lion feedings and more. For some water park fun during the hotter month, Pine Resort is a must visit. And as for shopping centres in the area, visit Key West Shopping Centre complete with a cinema and indoor sports arena, or Valleyview Shopping Centre.

You don't have to be a green fingered garden enthusiast to enjoy a plant nursery. I often visit my local nursery simply to take in a breath of fresh air and enjoy nature. However after months of being cooped at home, I've felt the call to go out and explore a little further. Of course, we are still unable to leave the province, so a road trip is off the cards. So where could I go for a day out in the sunshine without leaving Gauteng? There are tons of places to explore in the city, but I was eager to venture out a tad bit further.

My dear mother who is an avid gardener suggested we pay a visit to her favourite garden centre out in Muldersdrift - Random Harvest Indigenous Plant Nursery. I'd been here once before, but couldn't entirely remember what it was like. So I put on my face mask, packed up my hand sanitiser and set out on a mission to explore all that this indigenous plant centre has to offer. Here's what I found.

Random Harvest

Photo sourced from Random Harvest Indigenous Plant Nursery on Facebook.

Plant Life Galore

There is something truly magical about indigenous South African flora. While we may not have the pretty primroses of Northern rural England, our homegrown plants are magnificent in their own right. Stepping into Random Harvest Nursery I was immediately reminded of this.

Their retail nursery features a number of indigenous plant gardens and displays, showcasing just what our natural landscape has to offer. This garden-like setting aims to inspire gardeners to embrace indigenous plant-life by demonstrating its beauty. And it certainly works. Mom and I left with not one but a few new succulents to add to our rockery. Random Harvest's retail nursery also boasts a number of environmentally sustainable display gardens. Eco-conscious gardeners, make sure to stop by these gardens for awesome tips and tricks.

Quaint cottages

Random Harvest Nursery is full of wonderful surprises. During our visit we discovered that it is also a B&B! You can book an overnight stay at one of their 4-star cottages. Or spend a weekend away from the inner city hustle and bustle, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the gardens. Random Harvest's B&B is known for its hospitality and homely welcoming. Keep an eye on the nursery's Facebook page for updates on when they will be reopening under advanced level 3 lockdown.

Al fresco dining

There's nothing that I love more than a tea garden. Dining on tea and scones under the shade of a leafy tree is my idea of heaven. So you can imagine my joy at discovering Random Harvest's onsite tea garden! Sadly due to lockdown regulations, we weren't able to join them for a seated meal. But they are serving up tasty takeaways and ready-made meals, so do pop by if you can. Grab a cup of takeaway coffee and a few homemade biscuits to enjoy on your stroll around the gardens. There are benches located around the nursery for you to perch on as well. We'll definitely be back for a seated meal in the near future.

The Waterboys Are Coming To SA!

Breakout Events is excited to announce The Waterboys live in South Africa. Catch them live in Cape Town at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens on Friday 03 April 2020, and in Johannesburg at Casalinga on Sunday 05 April 2020.

Few bands have as great a live reputation as The Waterboys. From their mid-1980s "big music" period through the influential mix of Celtic, gospel and country on their classic Fisherman’s Blues and Room to Roam tours, to the hundreds of brilliant shows accompanying the rootsy, soulful triptych of albums This is the Sea, A Pagan Place and Fisherman’s Blues - The Waterboys have consistently blended tightness, inspiration and improvisation to reach heights of performance few other acts can.

The 2020 version of the band features the established core of Mike Scott (vocals, guitar, piano), Steve Wickham (electric fiddle), Memphis keyboard great "Brother" Paul Brown, ace British drummer Ralph Salmins and funky Irish bassman Aongus Ralston.

The Waterboys Live at Casalinga

Meanwhile, the relevance and popular reach of The Waterboys has never been greater. Their songs have been used in key shows such as Ray Donovan and The Affair, as well as being performed by artists as varied as U2, War on Drugs and Ellie Goulding, who scored a top 3 UK hit with “How Long Will I Love You”; Prince and U2, who sang The Whole Of The Moon onstage; Fiona Apple, who recorded it last year and classic singers Tom Jones and Rod Stewart. Irish magazine, Hot Press also listed The Waterboys as the best rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.

The Waterboys’ music shows no sign of fading, and the very best place to experience it is live.

The term "brasserie" is of French origin, meaning a restaurant with a relaxed, open setting, usually serving beer with simple, wholesome meals. Not often a term we hear when referring to Joburg restaurants, brasseries are few and far between in this city of bistros, gastro pubs and restaurant chains. That's why we had to look a little further out into the lush expanses of the Cradle of Humankind to find exactly what we were looking for. Little surprise, what we came across were a number of stunning wedding venues, including Toadbury Hall Country Hotel. Here is where we found a true hidden gem in the form of a country-style, open deck brasserie named WildWood Restaurant.

WildWood

Close To The City, Out In The Country

WildWood Restaurant boasts a stunning view of the Crocodile River from their deck. This is the perfect spot to spend a leisurely afternoon with family and friends. There is also tons of open space for the kids to play, so you need not worry about keeping them entertained. The interior is elegant without being pretentious. With a flaming fireplace adjacent to the bar, this is an ideal winter evening retreat. However, WildWood Restaurant flourishes all year round, offering their patrons a divine selection of Mediterranean-inspired meals. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, the restaurant caters to all palates, including the little ones who have their own separate menu.

The generous, classic breakfasts at WildWood are famed for their abundant flavour and variety of choices. Take your pick from a standard English breakfast with all the trimmings - eggs (scrambled, fried or poached), crisped bacon, tomato, pork sausages, black pudding and baked beans. Alternatively, you can opt for something a little lighter like the smashed avo toast or an omelette. We have it on good authority that WildWood's Eggs Benedict is pretty good too, so whatever you choose to tuck into should leave you satisfied and ready to tackle the day ahead.

Seeing as it is first and foremost a family-friendly venue, WildWood offers an array of sharing platters on their lunch menu, featuring firm favourites such as olives, roasted peppers, tzatziki, caramelised onions and dolmades. Complete your lunch with freshly baked ciabatta and a crisp bottle of chilled white wine. Not a wine drinker? Sample one of the restaurant's on tap craft beers supplied by Black Horse Brewery. With the stunning surrounds and on hand service, it couldn't get much better than this.

WildWood

Picnic Pleasure

When last have you been on a picnic? Whether it's with your special someone or the whole brood, sharing a meal outdoors brings people closer. WildWood Restaurant is all about creating the best outdoor dining experience for you and your loved ones. Providing the decor, food and setup, they bring the magic of the kitchen right out onto the banks of the Crocodile River for you to enjoy in the peace and quiet. With five private picnic areas, you can rest assured that your romantic date, birthday party or family gathering will go undisturbed.

There are two gourmet picnic menus to choose from. One for the little ones, which includes mini beef burgers with potato chips, chicken strips with sweet barbecue mayo, mini cheese and biscuits, dry wors, mini fruit skewers, chocolate brownies, Danish pastries and mini fruit juices. A balance of sweet and savoury, this spread should impress even the fussiest of eaters.

The adult gourmet picnic is just as enticing. With chicken liver pate with cranberry and apple jelly, fresh ciabatta, roast beef with honey and mustard, lamb meatballs with tzatziki, yoghurt roast chicken, baby beef shawarma, roasted pumpkin, feta and chickpea salad, potato salad with mint and parsley, vegetable and herb quiche, fruit kebabs with a passion fruit coulis, chocolate brownies and a cheese platter with savoury biscuits!

Picnic baskets must be pre-ordered from the restaurant to accommodate for your number of guests and dietary requirements. Place your order here.

WildWood

Fairy Light Weddings

WildWood understands that some couples don't want a large, lavish wedding. Host an intimate picnic wedding for you and a close group of friends and family. But not just any old picnic, of course! Picture a Bedouin stretch tent, garden tables, director chairs and picnic blankets with cushions to bring spectacular style to your wedding. All this is partnered with decadent picnic-style cuisine served in quaint wicker baskets to complete your outdoor wedding reception. If you choose to have your picnic-style reception by moonlight, WildWood Restaurant will throw in streams of pretty fairy lights to enhance the romantic atmosphere. It's sure to be unforgettable.
