Vegan Bowls

The Fussy Vegan

When driving through Jan Smuts Avenue in Blairgowrie, it's easy to pass by The Fussy Vegan without a second glance. But this vegan eatery, hidden away at a petrol station, is certainly worth another glance, and a visit. Serving up a delightful range of vegan snacks, burgers and confectionery, this is a one-stop vegan haven. Their menu boasts several bowl options, but we are enamored with the Poke Bowl. With sushi rice, mango chunks, cashews, creamy avo, edamame beans, teriyaki soy sauce, sushi ginger and carrot roses, this is a must-try vegan delight.

Doppio Zero

Doppio Zero has become the go-to for vegan and vegetarian meals. With the wide and delicious vegan offerings, we are not surprised. One of the items on their vegan menu is the Rainbow Bowl. Served with a trio of quinoa, pearled couscous and buckwheat, lightly tossed with chimichurri tofu, roasted beetroot, blistered cherry tomatoes, avo and nigella seeds. This delightful bowl is dressed with a creamy green hummus and an earthy tahini drizzle. The nuttiness of the grains combine beautifully with the sweet vegetables and the nigella seeds add a finishing touch that perfects the dish.

Kaylee's Eatery

This vegan eatery in Bedfordview has grown in popularity since its initial opening. Serving an all day breakfast, thick and creamy milkshakes, gourmet burgers and indulgent hot drinks, this is a must visit for any vegan or vegetarian. They prepare six sumptuous Power Bowls that are all worth a try. We recommend the Falafel Bowl, with deconstructed falafel mix, cherry tomatoes, marinated cucumber brunoise, red onion, olives and grilled aubegine. All of this is lightly tossed in a creamy coriander and tahini dressing.

Mugg & Bean

Mugg & Bean has long been a South African favourite. With their giant muffins, bottomless coffee and generous cake displays, we can see why. The restaurant now serves a selection of salads, smoothies and summer slushes in an effort to bring healthier options to their menu. One of our favourite bowls is The Benedict Bowl. This delight features fluffy cous cous, wilted baby spinach, roasted baby tomatoes and slivers of avocado topped with poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and basil pesto.

Lexi's Healthy Eatery

This restaurant caters to all dietary requirements, from vegan and vegetarian to meat eaters. This makes the eatery a go-to for any group of mixed eaters. Often left out vegetarians will adore the many options to choose from. One such option is the Farmer's Breakfast Bowl. This early morning meal is a mishmash of grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, roasted potatoes and avocado, blanketed in vegan hollandaise and sumac. All this is topped with a poached egg, but vegans may opt for a tofu scramble instead.

tashas

Another restaurant accommodating all dietary requirements, tashas is a solid choice for any vegetarian or health fundi. The focus of this restaurant is simple food made with simple and good quality ingredients. The freshness of the ingredients can be tasted in every bite of the Feta Quinoa Fritter Salad. Comprising of quinoa, feta and pea fritters served on a bed of labneh, mixed seeds and nuts, gem lettuce, cucumber, chives and cauliflower, all drizzled in a lemon vinaigrette.

Big Joe's Real Pies

When you're looking for a quick and easy lunch that will fill the spot and tastes good, there's nothing better than a warm and flaky pie. Especially when said pie is free of additives, preservatives and colourants. That is exactly what you'll be getting at Big Joe's. Freshly baked every day, these hand baked pies are made using old school methods, ensuring a mouthwatering final product.

Spur

Another common mall find, Spur combines Mexican and American flavours to create inviting meals that we all know and love. What has made this restaurant such a great success over the years is their family style dining. They have a decent kid's menu and offer entertainment to keep your little ones occupied throughout the meal. Their menu hasn't changed much over the years, serving up perfectly cooked steaks, delightful schnitzels and the ultimate nachos.

Delhi Delicious

This deli makes some of the most delightful pies and samoosas in the county. Their secret is in the crust, which is made with less fat and hot water. This results in a buttery flaky pastry that could make anything taste good. But it so happens that the Delhi Delicious fillings are also quite exquisite. Flavours range from hearty meaty ranges to flavourful vegetarian options, all delicious in their own right.

Bean Kissed

Espressos, cappuccinos, Americanos, lattes, mochas, turmeric lattes, chai lattes, ceylon tea, rooibos tea, hot chocolate, Milo, instant coffee, kiddyccinos and decaf are just some of the freshly made drinks available at Bean Kissed. Located in the food court, this coffee kiosk also offers a range of cold beverages as well as an assortment of appetising cookies and biscuits.

Spicy Den

At first glance, Spicy Den may appear to be any old spice shop. But once inside, you'll soon find that there is so much more to this hidden gem. Not only do they offer all sorts of spices, sauces, grains and oils, but they also create some of the most toothsome Indian food in the north. Menu items include roti rolls, biryanis and curries. But the secret treasure is, without a doubt, the substantial samoosas stuffed with perfectly spiced fillings.

Among these are lemon, chocolate and vanilla biscuits as well as sugar free, marmalade and chocolate and almond rusks. We adore these crunchy bites because of the buttery and vanilla nuances.

Mugg & Bean have been in the business of bottomless coffee, giant muffins and home-style classics since 1996. This coffee-shop-cum-bistro is a firm family favourite. They also pride themselves on giving old friends the space and time to chat for hours. To keep this 'spirit of generosity' going during the festive summer season, Mugg & Bean have revamped their menu. Here's what's new:

Breakfast

Mugg & Bean are known for their wholesome all-day breakfasts. But, they also know the importance of healthy living and good nutrition. Staying on the wagon over the holidays can feel near impossible. To help you steer clear of temptation, Mugg & Bean have re-introduced the Country-Style Low Carb Breakfast. It features two eggs, back bacon, pork sausage, fresh baby spinach, grilled mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, sliced avo* and cauliflower hashbrowns instead of toast.

Tex-Mex inspired brekkies are all the rage right now. Giving you that little extra spice you need, Mugg & Bean's Rancheros Omelette is a Mexican-inspired food fiesta, a cheesy, salsa-filled omelette topped with chorizo, fresh avo*, baby potato, charred corn and cherry tomatoes, drizzled with sriracha mayo and served with sour cream served on the side. It's the perfect way to fire up your morning.

Mugg and Bean

Vegetarians can now also rejoice over Mugg & Bean's breakfast bowls. With three new meat-free options on the menu, there is tons to fill you up and keep you going. Our favourite is the Benedict Bowl - tossed baby spinach, cherry tomatoes and couscous topped with two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, basil pesto and fresh avo*. Vegans, you haven't been left out of this breakfast feast. Try the Avo and Rainbow Slaw Toast - fresh avo* and cucumber slices topped with a crunchy red cabbage, roasted pepper, corn slaw and a generous drizzle of egg-free mayonnaise!

All in all, breakfast this summer is looking good at Mugg & Bean.

Lunch

A quick lunch at Mugg & Bean on a busy day just got even better. Their sandwiches have always taken centre stage on the menu. Filled with the freshest ingredients and innovative pairings, their toasties, panino's and fresh wraps are a delight. New on this sandwich buffet are a selection of gourmet sarmies. Our personal choice would be the Reuben - pastrami, Emmental cheese, gherkins, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on lightly toasted M&B rye bread. We don't think we could make a better sandwich ourselves.

If you are being super health conscious or have a gluten intolerance, order your sandwich on M&B's low-carb gluten free bread at an extra *R10. Or, try out one of their fresh summer salads. Taking your typical garden salad and turning it on its head, Mugg & Bean present the Chicken and Sesame Salad - chicken breast pieces, fresh apple slices, tenderstem broccoli, dried cranberries, toasted almonds and sesame seeds tossed with mixed lettuce, served with poppyseed dressing. It's a glorious mix of salty, sweet and fresh.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzpesccnl4h/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Again, in keeping with the growing demand for more vegetarian and vegan options on their menu, Mugg & Bean have added an array of meat- and dairy-free meals to their lunch buffet. From a Halloumi and Aubergine Foldover; to a vegan Kasbah Salad; Chickpea, Spinach and Egg-free Mayo Toasted Sarmie; a Chickpea and Pickled Red Onion Burger; Corn Fritters and a Thai Vegetable Noodle Bowl, there is almost a full meat-free menu at Mugg & Bean this summer! However, the one meal that really caught our eye is the vegetarian and vegan Nachitos - nacho chips topped with vegan cheese sauce, black beans, pico de gallo, jalapeños, fresh coriander, M&B salsa and guacamole. It's simply delicious.

Tea Time

As we mentioned before, Mugg & Bean is the perfect place to settle down for a hot cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate with friends. Of course, their divine selection of cakes, tarts and muffins also goes down a treat. As we welcome summer, M&B have expanded their iced drinks menu to include vegan-friendly options as well, including the Vegan Muggachino - a refreshingly blended dairy-free coffee iced frappé. The new menu also features two sugar-free ice teas, to keep you cool without the added sugar.

Looking to indulge? Order a Frozen Mocha Coffee - blended coffee, vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream. Or are you a stickler for old favourites? Mugg & Bean's roastery menu featuring premium blend medium and dark roasts is still available. We recommend the Single Origin Honduras blend - a medium organic roast with fruity fragrance and citrus notes. Available in bottomless, so you can indulge as much as you like.

Not in the mood for piping hot coffee? Mugg & Bean now offers bottomless iced drinks:

Top up as many times as you like, while enjoying M&B's bottomless free WIFI and great atmosphere

What is it about hearty and comforting foods, and winter? Let’s be honest, a plate full of greens just don’t cut it sometimes. If you feel the same way (there’s no shame in it), treat yourself to one, or more, of the scrumptious additions to Mugg & Bean’s new menu.

Here are our top picks of the drinks and dishes that you simply must try:

Tea Floats

Before you order your meal, why not opt for a rich and creamy tea float? They come in three flavours: chai, matcha green tea and red espressoTM. Our personal fave is the chai tea float – it’s sweet, spicy and satisfying, perfect for those chilly evenings!

A Sumptuous Bowl Of Soup

Mugg & Bean has added two delicious soups to its vast array of dishes. You can either try their smoked beef brisket and pan-fried gnocchi soup (which is fairly light and filled with lots of tasty veggies) or their coconut, carrot and ginger soup. The latter is vegan, and has a thick, creamy texture that you’ll love. The ginger is a great touch, in our opinion!

Mugg & Bean Brings Warm & Hearty Dishes To Its Winter Menu

Delicious Flatbreads

If you’re looking for a dish with plenty of flavour, we recommend their flatbreads. You can choose between their falafel, spinach and red pepper flatbread or even their smoked beef brisket (as you can see, they're all about the smoky flavour of brisket this winter), feta and roasted butternut flatbread. However, our pick has to be the sesame-crusted buttermilk chicken flatbread – it’s delightfully crunchy and has an amazing nutty sauce on top.

Hot Milkshakes

Yes, you read that right. Mugg & Bean is offering patrons the chance to literally play with their food (and drinks, in this case). When you order one of their decadent, chocolate hot milkshakes, you get a beautiful, chocolate-decorated jar, filled with ice cream, and a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows on the side. How those elements are mixed together is completely up to you – it’s definitely a fun twist on a well-known, winter staple.

The next time you decide to brave the cold, be sure to pop by Mugg & Bean for one of their tasty menu items… trust us, you'll be glad you did!

By Nicole Naidoo

Have you tried out any of these dishes? Let us know if you enjoyed them as much as we did in the comments section below!

District Six

Hearty stews, soups and curries all under one roof. We can't stop talking about District Six in Emmarentia because it's so, so, so good. The food is warm and filling and the hospitality something on par with breaking bread at your gran's house. Make sure you try the bredie!

Mugg & Bean

Tasty tea floats and hearty soups are just some of the treats that you can expect from Mugg & Bean's winter 2016 menu. It seems that they've kept the focus on flavour and comfort, and we're extremely happy about that! Be sure to pay them a visit and give some of their new menu items a try.

Kong Roast

The heroes at Kong Roast in Fourways have put together a winter tasting menu which consists of lamb gyoza, pork and prawn sui mai, butternut soup, spicy prawn soup, lamb massuman curry, chicken basil chilli, malva pudding and chocolate pancakes. All this for R250 per person is a deal times 10. The winter tasting menu will be available from 09 May to 31 July 2016.

Countess

Thursdays and Friday will see the steampunk themed restaurant, Countess, at 27 Boxes in Melville kick off its Burger Festival. That's right, a complete menu stacked with the best and most creative hamburgers you've ever seen. If we may suggest, the slow cooked rib burger with bourbon caramel sauce is amazing.

2-2

EB Social Kitchen & Bar

Why not grab the family and head to EB Social in Hydepark. Their fireplace is warm and inviting and their head chef is planning a winter menu so special that they didn't even want to spill the beans after we asked them very nicely. It's all good because we're all in for a great surprise.

Higher Ground

Situated on the grounds of St Stithians College, Higher Ground Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy some heat with friends or for an intimate dinner with loved ones. Sit by one of their two fireplaces to keep the chills away as the night rolls in. Our top dish at Higher Ground would be the fillet saltibucca pasta which consists of scallops of beef fillet pan fried in white wine with garlic, rosemary and sage.

Breakfast

Catz Pajamas

I remember this place from back in my studying days at UJ. This was a great place to hang out after that early morning or late afternoon class. They're a bistro, now located in Randburg, and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner all day, every day! Try out their three egg open style omelette!!

Find more information here.

News Café

This was another favourite among me and my friends while we were at university. This is an ideal place to hang out with friends for a cocktail or two and also for a breakfast that you can have any time of the day! They have a great selection of breakfasts to choose from, like the aptly named Hangover Eggs – toasted ciabatta, two fried eggs and streaky bacon with baked beans and their chilli sauce topped with feta. It was the perfect cure after a long night of partying!

Find more information here.

Doppio Zero

I have always been a fan of Doppio Zero, especially for their freshly baked croissants (the croissant topped with scrambled eggs, bacon and balsamic grilled tomato for breakfast is my favourite)! They have a great selection of breakfasts for you to choose from any time of the day. The next time I visit, I definitely want to try out the Barbarossa Breakfast – hash potatoes, chorizo, home-baked beans, baby spinach, chilli, tomato salsa, poached eggs and crumbled feta served with ciabatta toast.

Find more information here.

Tasha's

Making some of the best breakfasts in town, why not make a stop at Tasha’s at Melrose Arch and indulge in a delicious brekkie any time of the day? There is a great breakfast menu to choose from and a nice selection of vegetarian options available too. Jett & Luke’s Mini Breakfast Rolls makes my mouth water! Two baby burger rolls with fried eggs, cheddar, streaky bacon, rocket, grilled onion and innova potatoes!

Find more information here.

Mugg & Bean

Everyone has been to a Mugg & Bean at least once before. With their giant muffins, amazing frappés (Vanilla Freeze, yes please!) - and let’s not forget their all-day yummy breakfasts, this is the perfect spot to take the family for a late breakfast. My usual has always been the South African Farm Breakfast – two fried eggs, grilled tomato, boerewors topped with tomato salsa, hashbrown and macon served with a slice of toast.

Find more information here.

Europa (Sandton City)

With a great selection of egg breakfasts, croissants and all-around healthy choices, there is definitely something for everyone at Europa. The branch in Sandton City is one of the spots I visit the most when I am out doing my shopping and need a well-deserved break! Their breakfasts are served all day, and make sure you take a look at their deli!

Find more information here.

Wimpy

Wimpy brings back a lot of childhood memories when it comes to their breakfasts. As a child, every year on the way down to the coast for our annual family holiday, this was always our halfway stop. I have always loved their Hashbrown Splashdown breakfast – two eggs, two bacon rashers and a hashbrown. But the Wrap-it-Up breakfast wrap is my new favourite! Filled with scrambled egg, bacon, cheese, grilled onion and Wimpy relish!

With their giant muffins, amazing frappés (Vanilla Freeze, yes please!), and let’s not forget their all-day yummy breakfasts, this is the perfect spot to take the family for a late breakfast. My usual has always been the South African Farm Breakfast – two fried eggs, grilled tomato, boerewors topped with tomato salsa, hashbrown and macon served with a slice of toast.

Europa (Sandton City)

With a great selection of egg breakfasts, croissants and healthy choices, there is definitely something for everyone at Europa. The branch in Sandton City is one of the spots I visit the most when I am out doing my shopping and need a well deserved break! Their breakfasts are served all day, and make sure you take a look at their deli!

The Beer Co.

I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with having breakfast with beer, there is no set time as to when throats open right? And that rule also applies to breakfast too, you can pop in and your breakfast will be fresh and ready at The Beer Co. Upon walking in I instantly felt like I was not even around Joburg, because it is beautifully isolated in the Rand Airport with gorgeous open fields.. Are you sold? Because I am! To see exactly what they have to offer, check out their Menu! The food is as good as mamma’s (ok maybe better), with something for everyone. Don’t believe me? Check it out yourself!
