The Addams Family Rebooted

Universal Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer present an Addams Family adventure for a new generation this October. Rebooting the classic comics by Charles Addams, this 3-D computer animated comedy-horror has audiences all riled up. Featuring all your favourite characters, including Gomez and Morticia Addams (voiced by Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron, respectively).

However, this time the Addams family face even greater obstacles, as they make a big family move to New Jersey. Confronted by the harsh realities of the 21st-Century, the family are pinned up against a greedy, arrogant and sly reality TV host Margaux Needle (voiced by Allison Janney). All the while they must prepare for the arrival of the extended family, including Cousin Itt, Uncle Fester, Grandpa and Grandma Frump and Great Auntie Sloom.

The Addams Family opens at South African cinemas nationwide on Friday, 11 October 2019.

What Is It?

The Big Night In is The Bioscope's new night of cheesy movies and all-you-can-eat pizza! This screening happens once a month, and this September they're featuring the cult classic Rambo: First Blood (1982). Remember it?

Vietnam veteran and drifter John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into a small Washington town in search of an old friend, but is met with intolerance and brutality by the local sheriff, Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy). When Teasle and his deputies restrain and shave Rambo, he flashes back to his time as a prisoner of war and unleashes his fury on the officers. He narrowly escapes the manhunt, but it will take his former commander (Richard Crenna) to save the hunters from the hunted. It's sure to be epic!

The Big Night In will take you back in time. Just like it's 1982 and you're having a sleepover with friends, featuring a bad VHS copy rented that day. Come comfy - blankets and pillows are welcome, and don't be afraid to wear your PJs! This is a safe space! Plus, there will be bottomless hot chocolate for everyone who does rock up in their sleepwear.

What Is It?

It has been a long-standing tradition at the Bioscope Independent Cinema to screen Sean Cunningham's 1980 cult classic Friday the 13th , whenever the fateful day falls on the calendar! This September however, The Bioscope are bringing you something extra special. Rather than just present a movie screening, they will be hosting an awesome after party event to liven up your Freaky Friday. Plus, you can book for either an early or late screening of the film. Either way, you can join them for the exclusive party at the adjoining bar.

If you have never seen Friday the 13th before, this is your chance. A group of camp counsellors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which, years before, was the site of a child’s drowning. Spooky!

When Is This?

Friday, 13 September 2019.

Early Screening at 19:00-20:30
Live DJ and Drinks Specials in the bar area from 20:30-22:30

Ever wanted to have a somewhat unique movie experience but don't necessarily know where to go? Well! You don't have to look any further, just take a stroll down to see more about Maboneng's gem, The Bioscope.

The Bioscope Maboneng Johannesburg

More About The Bioscope

The Bioscope is comfortably situated in the artist hub of The Maboneng Precinct. They are very close to the ample restaurants that grace the precinct, however, is a standout because they are the only place in Maboneng where you can enjoy the traditional ways of movie screenings.

This independent cinema has created a culture where they screen a mixture of the classic movies, new movies, film festival movies and more. Their main aim is to make sure that diversity shines through in their selective screenings and that Johannesburg movie standards are high up.

They also pride themselves in bringing you the newest movies from both local and international film. Not only that, but they also bring back those movies that you wish you watched on the big screen and missed out on or the ones that arrived way before the big screen even existed.

The Bioscope Maboneng Johannesburg

Why You Need To Bioscope?

They are not about that mainstream life, they are about fresh content, diversification to the extent of documentaries and the timeless bits, too.

Here's a cherry on top, not only can you watch but you can also hire the cinema for any of your events which include hosting a screening, premiering your own film, corporate events as well as hosting your birthday (now that is a unique way of celebrating).

They opened their own amazing foodie spot downstairs called Chalkboard, basically this is a pizza parlour and bar that plays a very integral role at The Bioscope. The amazing combo deal that is always the first choice for many comes from here; this includes your movie ticket, a pizza and a beverage. If that's not a great deal, I don't know what is.

The Bioscope Maboneng Johannesburg

Chalkboard

The Chalkboard has become a popular spot for their pizza, and the fact that you can enjoy the pizza while watching a movie is a definite plus for everyone. The parlour is open everyday at around brunch until quite late due to movie screenings.

Their tables are chalkboards, so if you up for some idea generation, this is a great spot for meetings too. During screenings, Chalkboard doubles up as the ticketing office and a bar for The Bioscope.

The Bioscope Maboneng Johannesburg

Their creative space allows you to really feel the essence of film making and the artistic characteristics that filmmakers awaken. The space on itself is a ball of creativity. So whether you want a romantic night out or an outing with some friends, chick flick vibes then this is the best place.

May I also add that The Bioscope is situated in a very creative environment and is creative in its own right, so you can take a few selfies to capture the moment as part of your movie.

Johannesburg, there you have it! A cinema with a difference.

What Is It?

The Bioscope Independent Cinema host regular Cult Classic Movie Nights for movie lovers of all ages. This June, the Bioscope will be hosting a screening of Harvey (1950) - a classic movie about a wealthy drunk who starts having visions of a giant rabbit. This screening is in aid of the incredible work done by Berario Bunnies, Bunny Tales Rescue, The Lonehill Bunnies and The Strawberry Foundation. All proceeds will go towards these foundations to ensure the continued care of abandoned bunnies.

Harvey  is a fun family film, so bring the kids along for a day out at the cinema. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

So, if you know all the words to Sweet Transvestite and Time Warp and know how to do the pelvic thrust, this is your chance to unleash those singing skills. No one will judge, they might just try sing louder than you. Props, corsets, and hands-on-hipping are also encouraged!
