The Whippet

When I think of The Whippet, creativity is the one word that springs to mind. Situated in Linden's most peaceful area, known as the spot to have the super pair - coffee and a tasty, yummy, most creamiest milk tart. Your tummy will thank you for all of this.

Side note: the decor at Whippet is just absolutely fabulous.

Cultiv8

Cultiv8 has to be one of the most diverse venues in the west, catering to multiple events options. That is not the only thing that people travel here for to see. Everyone is on the hunt for their amazing milk tart! This milk tart recipe has been passed on from generation to generation and could easily land in your stomach if you pay them a visit. Trust us, you won't regret it.

Cafe Dol Sol Botanico

The desserts at Cafe Dol Sol Botanico are impeccable. But, one dessert that does stand out is our very own South African dessert - milk tart. If you mouth is not watering, something is wrong, as "Bonatico" have added some of that Italian flavour to the classic by creating a milk tart flavoured Italian panna cota.

Once you taste this slice of genius two worlds, you will be hooked.

Fournos Bakery

I think we have all come to accept the fact that Fournos has amazing tummy hugging bakery goods. They could definitely make any mom a bit jelly for not having their recipes. To add on to that, one of my favourites is their milk tart. Lord have mercy!

Fournos knows how to stir up that, "homemade" type of feeling out of anyone. One thing that does stand out though - they know just the quantity of cinnamon dust to sprinkle onto the milk tart.

Tart Patisserie

If you are looking for a slice of heaven, it can be found at the Tart Patisserie. Oh my, I'm weak already! You would be too if you've tasted their dessert or cake. Their milk tart is to. die. for... I had to put emphasis on that so you would catch my drift. It is one of the spots you want be in for sweet tooth satisfaction.

De Backery

Not only does De Backery have a unique name, they have a unique touch when it comes to tarts (excuse my French, but their milk tart is one that will never forget). This Dutch inspired spot has brought a milk tart recipe that will have you drooling.

When posed with the not-so-age-old question about who would win a fight between the city and the suburbs when it comes to places to hang your hat, we're on the fence. There are pros for both. First on the fight bill, it's Braamfontein and Linden. We give the facts, and you choose the winner.

The City

Braamfontein is to high-rise living what caffeine is to coffee – you get a kick around every corner. We're talking about the good kind of kick. Where there's tonnes of stuff to do and tonnes of stuff to see. It's the kind of place where you take your hat off and lay your head down if you believe that the party only stops when the city cuts the power... which almost never happens because the City Of Johannesburg's headquarters is in Braamies (you can't have the mayor's office without electricity, now can you?). Don't quote us on that. Here's why you should consider Braamfontein as your suburb.

Eat

Post

Coffee is synonymous with breakfast, and you can get the best of both at Post. Its open-plan kitchen can be found right behind the counter, and the guys working the register also work the grill, which makes for an interesting – and theatrical – morning. Don’t be surprised to see the cook flip a bacon strip, take your order, pop you your change and turn around to scramble a few eggs. The menu changes quite often, giving you something new to try every time you visit, and the service and food are always top-notch.

86 Public

You can’t go to Braamies without popping into 86 Public. Craft pizza is the name of the game here, and they pull it off very well. From butternut and blue cheese on a beer base, to prosciutto, Gorgonzola, pear and caramelised onions on sourdough, 86 Public knows how to combine flavours. It’s no wonder they opened a branch in Illovo.

Party

The Orbit (RIP)

Smooth jazz and great food is what attracted people to The Orbit jazz lounge in Braamies. They've been known to entertain crowds with various underground and international acts. Sadly The Orbit closed down after battling the man. You will be missed.

Kitcheners

One of the oldest pubs in the city, Kitcheners serves great toasted sandwiches – and they throw one helluva party. As Kitcheners hosts live music, DJs and comedy shows almost every night of the week, your best bet to find out what’s going down at this joint is to keep an eye on their Facebook page. If you’ve never partied in Braamies then Kitcheners is a great place to start.

Stay

Braamies is one of the places where you can pick up a super-spacious – or cramped, for that matter – living quarters for fairly cheap. Then again, there are a lot of high-rise lofts in the area that cost a pretty penny, such as those being built in Milpark. In a nutshell, Braamies is all about apartment living, and there are loads up for rent on the internet.

The Suburb

We all love Linden. It's the kind of place you go to when you aren't sure what you feel like eating, to have a quick drink or spend the day in a coffee shop. It's such a homely suburb that the reality TV game show, Big Brother (yeah, it's still a thing), was filmed here.

Eat

The Whippet

You can roll out of bed all the way down to the Whippet and have yourself one of the best cups of coffee in town accompanied with a slice of top-notch milk tart. Need any more convincing?

Craft Beer Library

Just as the name suggests, the Craft Beer Library prides itself on being an archive for all things craft beer. It's the place for avid beer lovers and midday drinkers. Patrons can expect stouts, porters and ales on tap. If beer is not your thing then no sweat – this lovely little establishment also stocks craft cider. The Craft Beer Library serves pretty good food too – gourmet pub food, to be exact. It's quite a unique place and lives up to the hype for sure.

Rosto

Have you ever had Italian street food before? If no (or yes for that matter), head to Rosto and try out their take on chickpea fries, rotisserie chicken (best in the country, in our humble opinion) and alcoholic ice teas. Their focaccias are to die for and are made from a 90-year-old bread sponge (no jokes, we met the sponge). Rosto also serves arancini, which is deep-fried rice balls stuffed with cheese and meaty fillings. It's delicious and saves us a trip to the cool streets of Rome... Even though a trip to Italy would be pretty sweet right about now.

Party

Linden is not quite there yet when it comes to partying, mainly because it's a fairly chilled neighbourhood. There are a couple of bars and restaurants in the area that host live music and so on, but it's not the kind of place you go to to pop a couple of shots and get into dance-offs in the parking lot.

Brian Lara's Rum Bar

Only a dude as crazy as Gert Schoonraad (mastermind behind the Great Dane and Town Hall) can come up with a bar and restaurant where you receive lottery tickets upon leaving. Meet the Brian Lara Rum Bar. It's a West Indies-themed eatery and cool-kid hangout that serves really good food. Think big burgers and spicy chicken wings – that type of vibe. The place is almost always packed and usually one of the last spots in Linden to close... Because, you know, it's a party.

Stay

Off the bat, there's a new, hip and super-sexy development called Fifty Five in Linden that's the hottest place to stay for sure. Other than that, there are quite a few apartments on the market. Egoli Gas is also in the area so that is a big plus. Gas on demand at a super low rate? That is a rocking thing and a half.

The Whippet

What used to be the Linden Hotel is now one of Johannesburg's most famous coffee shops and milk tart spots. But let's focus on the coffee for now, shall we? The Whippet is a fan favourite and a hit amongst tourists for some reason. Maybe it's got something to do with the good coffee? Of course, it does! Either way, their americanos are brilliant, their espressos potent and the lunch menu is something out of a midsummer night's dream. The baristas are all good at what they do and super friendly. Add The Whippet to your must-have coffee bucket lists, please.

Motherland Coffee Company

This coffee shop only uses the finest coffee beans sourced from African countries like the Congo, Ethiopia and Rwanda. They aim to reclaim Africa, our motherland, through their excellent java. They do this by only sourcing fair trade coffee beans to ensure that every sip you take supports Africa and her people.

Steam

Bean There

Coffee is the most traded commodity in the world and with it comes the ups and downs of big industry. Thanks to Bean There and its massive investment in fair trade coffee from Ethiopia, many farmers and farm workers in the region have access to things such as running water and medical aid... and these improvements to the working condition has split over into every cup of coffee served at the Bean There Cafe at 44Stanley in Milpark.

State 5

State 5 is the coffee company that has brought Greenside and Fourways the evolution of cold brew coffee. This process leaves one with a delicious cup of joe that has a more delicate flavour with an even bigger kick than your regular cup. Their menu has an extensive range of cold brew mixes that will leave you begging for more.

Various Coffees

The Grind Coffee Co.

The most Instagrammed coffee in the world can be found at Melrose Arch inside a cycling store... yup. Dayne of The Grind Coffee Co. is quite passionate about java and this shows in the flavours and aroma that is brewed up in every cup - or cone - served at his coffee shop. They also serve deli styled sandwiches, and cold brew for those hot summer days.

Father Coffee

This coffee shop has a branch in the prestigious Rosebank and our beloved Braamfontein. They stock a wide range of coffee beans from all over the world. The friendly staff are more than happy to teach the clientele about how to brew the best cuppa with the machines and beans you have at home. So you can enjoy that perfect cup of warmth in your own home.

coffee

Double Shot Coffee & Tea

We don't want to pick one above the other but... Double Shot in Braamfontein holds a very special place in our hearts. Artisan coffee would be the best way to explain what's going on at this little shop in the city. The owner roasts up a fresh batch of their in-house blend each morning, so you know it's fresh. Double Shot also serves muffins, cookies and pastries for those who feel like a nibble... oh, and they also serve craft teas... yeah, craft teas is a thing.

Have you been to any of our favourite coffee shops? Let us know if the list is missing one of your hangouts and we'll be sure to check it out. Sharing is caring so show this to that caffeine addicted friend of yours.
