It's always great to go out and enjoy a lovely breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert every once in a while. If you love food, nothing makes your heart smile more than being fed. Better yet, being fed delicious food.
We have just the places you need to visit for an amazing meal along with a genuinely good ambiance. These restaurants all ooze with a unique factor to suit whatever you want.
Here is an interesting fact about our list, all these restaurants have the word milk in them. Even if you are lactose intolerant, you will love them to bits.
Let's take a quick trip to explore our tasteful African continent all in one restaurant, Milk Bar. If you want to experience something that is African-inspired, then this is the spot to visit.
Milk Bar began with the with story of three friends, who by their globe trotting nature, explore Africa and found themselves falling in love with the Motherland and becoming coffee connoisseurs. Along their travels, they saw and share memories that sparked something, and here we are at their vibrant restaurant.
You can feast your eyes (and stomach) on their generous menus, offering a wide variety of food and drinks. So, do indulge in unique meals such as sweet potato toast, sweet chickpea curry and many more. To finish off a good meal, one must enjoy a good dessert - they have cake and Paul's Ice-Cream. Need we say more.
We do have more - they have live music from time to time. That is a definite cherry on top.
Want to pair good food with a groovy live performance? Perhaps a electric ambiance? Spilt Milk is the place for you.
This social cafe situated in bustling Melville is a gem like you've never seen before. Spilt Milk has it's little quirks that draw you in. Boasting with a warm and almost nostalgic feeling, you can enjoy delicious meal to give you warm feeling inside as well.
Spilt Milk hosts Sunday Jazz so you can enjoy some sultry jazzy tunes while indulging. May we add that they have a very generous offering, from breakfast right through to dinner (and depends on what you make of dessert)? They have lovely eats that you can also order for take out.
Personal favourite: has to be their bright coloured 'Fountain Of Youth' menu.
If you want to be left satisfied and filled to the brim, Tiger's Milk is where you need to find yourself eating and drinking.
Ever heard the term, 'dude food'? That is what they have to offer, so expect generous portions and menu accompanied by mouthwatering options. Plus, you can grab a friend to enjoy their 2-for-1 Monday special (just check website to see availability). Definitely something to look at.
Tiger's Milk has ample options on their menu, ranging from morning kicks, sharing options, meaty and much more. Honestly, the list is endless.
You can find all this goodness in their Johannesburg branches - Cedar Square, Bryanston and Melrose Arch.

Rosebank’s art and design district, Keyes Art Mile, has become home to a new monthly food market – The Pantry Market at Keyes. Taking place on the last Saturday morning of every month, the Pantry Market at Keyes specialises in small-batch, artisanal food products for you to take home and stock your pantry with. It brings to the district everything from olive oil and honey to fresh produce, charcuterie, confectionery, sourdough bread and whole grains. The inaugural edition in March was a resounding success, with visitors flocking through the doors, and exhibitors experiencing a powerful new platform from which to sell their produce & products and share their stories.
One of the highlights of The Pantry Market at Keyes is the talks programme. Each month visitors can attend a free food-related talk by an industry expert. Topics include ethical eating, reducing your plastic-use, plant-based diets, and more. The upcoming talk, on 28 April at 10h30, will be by Karen Dunn, owner of Urban Apiary, who will discuss everything from the questions you should be asking about supermarket honey, to why every city needs healthy bees, and gardening tips to promote bees.
The market is a plastic-free zone, and visitors can shop top-quality, ethically produced products in a relaxed, curated space, in which they meet the makers, sip, sample, snack and enjoy live music. They can even bring their own glass jars to fill with milk and honey. To complete the experience, breakfast and lunch are available from the several Keyes Art Mile restaurants, including BGR, MESH Club, Milk Bar and Marble. While SMAC and the TMRW gallery offer additional visual stimulus to the morning, True Design (Kartell, Moroso and Cassina), Okapi, Shelflife and Anatomy will be open for browsing and shopping.
The Pantry Market takes place on the last Saturday of every month in The Atrium of The Trumpet on Keyes – 21 Keyes Avenue from 9am-2pm.

The Gentleman's Arthouse
Who would have thought that one of the swankiest restaurants in Johannesburg would be located inside an old Edwardian building in Newtown. The Gentleman's Arthouse is so fancy that the only way you can visit them is by appointment only. Book yourself an evening to remember at this awesome venue. Their serve craft cocktails and four-course meals in a beautiful environment.
When it opened in 2016, the creme of the Joburg culinary crop flocked to Marble in Rosebank to see the restaurant built "for David Higgs". After old Dave's roaring season at the Saxon and a stint in Cape Town, he returned to the City Of Gold to show exactly why he's South Africa's short-order king... not that his food is short-order... it just slides off the tongue. Anyway. The view from Marble stretches out from the top of Jan Smuts Avenue all the way to the Magalies mountains in the west. The restaurant specialises in open-flame cooking that will have any South African drooling at the mouth. So, save a couple of bucks from your January pay and spoil that special someone with a V-Day evening like never before.
We're sticking in Keyes Avenue, Rosebank for this one. Right below Marble you will find Jozi's very own Milk Bar. Now, before you reminisce about the milk scene in A Clockwork Orange, it's not like that. Milk Bar is a great cafe, bar and restaurant that's decorated to the 9's in all things West and East African. With that said, the Milk Bar is a laid back place where you can grab a cup of coffee on the go or stick around for dinner and drinks come sundown. It makes for a fun date night and a pretty adventurous way to spend a romantic evening.
Sandton is know as the shopping capital of Africa, and it's only fair enough that they also host one of the most intimate restaurants in the city. Chef Trevor is one of the best fine dining creators in the country and has been chosen to lead the South African team in the 2020 World Cooking Olympics. Now that I've sold the chef to you, let me tell you why the Piccolo Mondo is on this list. Have you seen any romantic dinner scenes in movies? Well, the Piccolo Mondo looks exactly like one of those restaurants. That should be reason enough to make a booking there.
Head to Maboneng on a Friday evening, grab a box of noodles and cuddle up at the Bioscope indie cinema for some karate movie action. It's a lot cooler than it sounds, we promise. There's nothing quite like cuddling up in a movie theatre next to that special someone, especially when it's in the super trendy inner city district of Maboneng. Don't tell anyone but we recommend you sneak in your own popcorn to chow down on after you've finished your hole-in-the-wall noodles (no, really, there is a hole in the wall from the restaurant next door from which you can order food and drinks).
The Johannesburg (WITS) Planetarium in Braamfontein is a great option if you can't take a trip chasing the night sky across the country. This planetarium is the biggest in Africa and hosts interesting and educational shows with the use of large projectors that create visions and pictures of the galaxy for you to see. Not only will you get a truly unique glimpse into the universe, but you'll also get the opportunity to learn about the planets, various star constellations and the amazing celestial objects that have been discovered over the years... or you could use this as an excuse to hold hands under the stars.
Ice Rink - Northgate
The Ice Rink at Northgate is where all the cool kids hang out when school's out. Why not grab your blazer and comfy pants and head to the rink for some ice carving sessions with your arm candy? The Rink also offers boot hire for those who don't have their own skates. This makes for an awesome birthday party and a great way to spend time with the family.
African Flavour Books
If there's a spark between two people, anything can be made romantic - including a visit to the book store. Besides, there's nothing more appealing than someone who reads. A stone's throw from Braamfontein you will find African Flavour books, a little book shop with a big heart. It's a great place to browse books and music, and to do a little people watching with that someone special as well.
Life On 3rd
If you are ever looking for an escape from big city life then head to Life On 3rd in Melville. It is the perfect hideaway from all things hustle and bustle. Why not spend an evening there accompanied by a bottle of JM. Gobillard, your V-Day date, and some good times?
The Maslow Hotel
With a beautiful bar and huge garden, why not organise yourself a picnic at the Maslow Hotel in Sandton? It offers a great escape from the city within the city... so to speak. The Lacuna Bistro serves great food, the bar is stocked with bubbly and good whisky, and if you're lucky you can spot a politician or ten having brunch. To boot, the Maslow Hotel is kitting out for Valentine's Day, and you can score special stay packages, delicate dinners, and a romantic lunch on the lawns.
Four Seasons The Westcliff
How about a spa day at one of South Africa's most iconic hotels? The Fourseasons Westcliff has one of the most beautiful spas in Jozi and you should go pay it a visit with your date. The perfect way to unwind is with two 90-minute spa treatments of your choice, followed by bubbly and canapés served at Après Spa, the city's only outdoor rooftop lounge. Or choose a Westcliff Deli “chic-nic” (chic picnic) takeaway to enjoy in the comfort of your home.

In its previous life, the Sandton Sports Club at George Lea Park was, at best, “fine”. It was okay. It did the job. It had a few fields, beach volleyball court, some tired tennis courts, a small serviceable hall that hosted a few classes and events and fairly substantial parking. Nothing to write home about, but it served as a fairly decent green space in the heart of Parkmore.
Featuring a new volunteer-based committee with a razor-sharp focus and tireless dedication, the Sandton Sports Club has become the go-to venue for families, sports fanatics and innovative businesses looking for a new home. And, you don’t need to be a member to enjoy all it has to offer (unless you want to – see below as to why we think it’s a good idea!)
To be fair, the brand new Milk Bar is reason enough to visit! With a stunning bar area and tables spilling out onto a large deck, Milk Bar is already THE go-to spot on Thursday nights (if you enjoy live music) and Friday nights (for sundowners and a delicious meal). While I was there, I noticed many people using the outdoor tables as a workspace – and who can blame them, with beautiful views and outstanding coffee, why not?
There is also a fully fenced-off shaded grassy area where the kids can play – with brand new jungle gyms and dedicated childminders. There is also plenty of secure outdoor space where kids can skateboard, rollerblade and ride their bikes, as the entire club has been ring-fenced with new perimeter fencing and dedicated security guards have been added. Can anyone say “new playdate venue to try”?
The Milk Bar has also fully renovated the old Hall into an upmarket modern events venue called BOTANIST, that is now available for corporate events, birthday celebrations, wedding receptions and more.
On the sports' front, the club’s key offering is the brand new 5-a-side soccer fields and clubhouse, brought to you by the same operators as the Discovery Soccer Park at Wanderers. Social, Corporate, Ladies and Mixed leagues will be hosted in the evenings and on the weekends. The club is also home to a junior football club and an extension of the Warriors FC, currently at the Wanderers Club. Catering for ages from 3 upwards, the club prides itself on its highly qualified elite trainers with international experience.
Other offerings include:
If you’re looking for an exciting new party venue, then the Soccer Club and Clubhouse might be exactly what you’re looking for! With dedicated soccer co-ordinators, complete use of a section of the Soccer Clubhouse and deck, and with optional catering available from Milk Bar – this venue is ideal for those wanting an active outdoor party away from home. Plus, the venue is licensed.
No membership fee is required to enjoy the Sandton Sports Club and all it has to offer, however paying members will receive a 10% discount on their total Milk Bar bill, reduced rates on various club offerings, and voting rights as to the direction the club takes in the future. Membership fees are as little as R100 per person per month or R120 per month for a family of four. And yes, I signed up (via their website).
If you’ve had the pleasure of experiencing Milk Bar in George Lea Park, then you’ll know about their cool, Afrocentric vibe and café culture, which later turns into a festive bar atmosphere.
We recently went to the branch on Keyes Avenue and were met with colourful decor, shweshwe-print chairs, African art and foliage everywhere. The atmosphere at this particular Milk Bar is busy, lively and inviting, whether you're popping in for a coffee catch-up, lunch or drinks after work with friends.
The Milk Bar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as bar snacks, and the menu features African-inspired dishes like bunny chows and boerrie rolls (where else can you get these in a restaurant?), plus there's a variety of flatbreads, pies and pregos.
To quench your thirst, they have rich aromatic coffees (we highly recommend the cappuccino, it’s so good!), loose-leaf African teas and a few cold drink options like the iced lemonade and mint, very refreshing on a warm day.
So Joburgers, if you’re in the Rosebank area, pop into the Milk Bar – it’s definitely worth checking out! For more information, visit their Facebook page.
