Samantha Berger gave up her life in the corporate world to fulfil a dream of making a difference to the lives of many abused, abandoned and neglected domestic animals. Starting with two litters of stray kittens housed in her spare room, soon Samantha was caring for over 300 animals with the help of 18 staff members.
Needless to say, the journey has been fraught with what has seemed like insurmountable mountains to climb, tears and heartache. They have had to move properties three times before finding their current property in Midrand. They have been crippled by burglaries and faced the devastation of a fire. Rand Water tore up their property, with very little compensation, and made it almost impossible for them to operate for seven full months. But the challenges they face fade away when they look at all the lives they save.
Kitty and Puppy Haven have seen the most broken and traumatised animals learn to trust again. They nurse their fur babies physically and emotionally and make them whole again. And Samantha and her team say there can be no greater reward. Their slogan is 'We Change Their Destiny'. Once an animal comes into their care, no expense is spared to meet all that animal’s needs and to find them the perfect forever home. Some animals, like their feral cats, will spend the rest of their days at Kitty and Puppy Haven as they can't be homed. But this foundation still loves those animals like their own and sees to their every need. Anyone who has seen their Cat Sanctuary will attest to this.
Right now, Kitty and Puppy Haven are in crisis mode. Their sanctuary is closed due to the national lockdown. They have had to move 14 members of staff onto the property, both to care for their animals and for their own safety. Kitty and Puppy Haven are housing and feeding them and doing everything possible to ensure their comfort during this time. Their operating costs have risen and they have absolutely no income. They still have to pay salaries, rates, water and electricity, provide food for their animals and staff and pay for veterinary visits and care. Their operating costs are over R250 000 per month. And at the moment, they are unable to conduct fundraisers, receive physical donations, operate their shop or process any adoptions.
Some may ask why Kitty and Puppy Haven did not go the foster route and seek homes for their animals during lockdown. The answers are simple:
The situation is dire and that is why Samantha and her team are appealing to the public for help. They are asking the public to help them get through by making a donation, no matter how big or small. Anything will help and will be greatly appreciated. It can be a once off, or a monthly donation (just request a debit order form). They are a registered Public Beneficiary Organisation, so donations can be tax deductible and they can issue an 18A tax certificate.

An Outdoor Spectacular
“Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." - The White Queen
This unique outdoor experience will draw its audience in with shrill exclamations of “Off with their heads!” echoing across Riversands Farm Village as a game of Human Chess gets underway.
A Hat Parade, Best Dressed competitions, a Chocolate Hunt and a host of other surprises will also leave attendees grinning like a Cheshire Cat as things become "Curiouser and curiouser!"
"'And what is the use of a book,' thought Alice, 'without pictures or conversation?'"
The event will screen all of the essential movies on a big outdoor screen: Alice in Wonderland (1951), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Into the Looking Glass (2016).
Appealing to young and old and everyone in between, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party by #PiP is sure to be a fun-filled outing for the whole family.
A Labour of Love
“The Picnics in the Park series turns five this year, and we’re celebrating by throwing Johannesburg its best Mad Hatter's Tea Party yet. The event is one of our most popular themes within the series and we look forward to entertaining long-time fans and new supporters alike,” says Leone Amon of Amon Events International, an award-winning events company.
Amon, creator of the #PiP brand and coordinator of its annual festivities, is known for developing exceptionally immersive experiences. From captivating props to dazzling sets, and glittering costumes to intriguing activities, her attention to detail ensures audiences remain deeply engaged.
A Record-Breaking Event
“The best way to explain it is to do it.” - The Dodo
The 2017 Mad Hatter's Tea Party made its mark on the global stage by setting the Guinness World Record for the most people dressed as Alice in Wonderland characters in one place at the same time.
This year, #PiP has decided to brew up some friendly rivalry between Joburg and Cape Town (whose own Mad Hatter's Tea Party falls on 28 March 2020) in an attempt to better last year’s Guinness record.
“Only one city can win the title for the most people dressed as Alice in Wonderland characters in one place,” says Amon. “So we’re challenging Joburgers to bring their family and friends for support, all dressed up in their maddest hats, dandiest costumes and craziest makeup. Be sure to follow us on social media and our website for rules, inspiration and creative ideas.”
This year’s event is held in loving memory of Heila Killian (1955-2018), who won the Best Dressed award for her Queen of Hearts costume in 2017.

The Herb Farm is planted directly between Johannesburg and Pretoria, in the tranquil hills of Midrand. Taking a 40-minute drive out of the city to this manicured herb garden, bistro and nursery is well worth it. The view alone is picture-worthy, but it's the scent of the place that will have you dizzy with pleasure. A thousand different smells of healing herbs, indigenous plants and fragrant lavender greet you. Boasting over 400 herbal plants in one setting, this is a botanical gem. The architecture of the Herb Garden matches this beauty in spades. With secret spaces, mazes, climbing gardens and fountains surrounded by lush roses bushes, this is paradise if ever there was one.
Come and explore the Herb Farm's bountiful rows of corn, potatoes and other hardy vegetables. Using only the scent of their herbs as natural pesticides, The Herb Farm is able to grow ample produce. Next move on to the wonderland of mazes at the centre of the gardens. Spiraled pathways are lined with healing plants such as Echinacea and Pineapple Sage. Take a moment to stop and read all about the properties of these plants which can be found on signposts along the path. You may be surprised by what you learn!
Once you have thoroughly explored the Herb Farm's gardens, make your way to the garden shop near the exit. Here, you can find nifty hanging baskets, planters and boxes for all your herbs and seedlings. The garden shop often partners with local traders to bring you a fabulous outdoor market. This market sells beautiful blooms, cacti, garden gnomes, handcrafted steel work and fertilisers. The kiddies can have a ball at the Play Yard while you browse around for all your garden and kitchen essentials.
The Herb Farm often hosts tours and workshops in their gardens. Their annual Autumn Show brings in scores of curious gardeners, cooks and herbalists. They also host cooking classes, teaching eager foodies all about the right ways to use herbs and spices in their cooking. However, possibly the biggest attraction at the Herb Farm are their High Tea events. Hosted twice a year, these afternoon high tea events highlight the spectacular versatility of herbs in an array of tasty finger foods, drinks and sweet treats, hosted at the Herb Farm Bistro, which seats 70 people under a canopy of trees.
The Herb Farm Bistro has now also introduced a High Tea For Two, hosted on the last Sunday of every month. The perfect outing for mom and daughter or old friends, this is a high tea with a difference. For only *R250 per person, you get an assortment of snacks, cakes and herbal teas to enjoy among the buzzing bees. Secure your booking via email at [email protected].
The Herb Farm Bistro also caters romantic picnics and special occasions. Bring your loved one along for a picnic in the gardens featuring olive brie, green fig brie, White Rock, bacon, caramlised onion and peppadew quiche, hummus, cream cheese, basil and sun-dried tomato, pastrami, gypsy ham, dried fruit, crackers, ciabatta, meatballs and chicken wings! Finish off your feast with sweet date balls, lemon tart and dark chocolate. Paired with a glass or two of Pomegranate Cuvee, this is sure to win over any heart.
Alternatively, you can host your baby shower, kitchen tea or birthday party at the Herb Farm Bistro. Catering options include a 'Kuier Tafel' buffet, brunch buffet or celebration snack platter. Whichever you choose, you are bound to be wowed by the culinary ingenuity of this bistro and bar. Guests of any age are welcome too.
