Based on the hilarious 1967 film, Mel Brooks’ The Producers is a laugh out-loud, outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical-comedy that has been a smash-hit since its 2001 debut. The central plot sees fading Broadway producer, Max Bialystok (played by Alan Committie), desperate to get to the top of his profession again, and finds an unlikely ally in mousy accountant, Leo Bloom (played by Richard White), who predicts that one could make far more money with a flop of a show than with a hit. Together, the two set out to produce the worst musical ever to hit Broadway. With no shortage of show-stopping musical numbers, and Brooks’ signature humour keeping audiences in stitches, The Producers is definitely far from a flop. The Producers runs at the Pieter Toerien Theatre from Friday 03 April 2020 until Sunday 31 May 2020.

The National School of the Arts (NSA) stands as a beacon of theatre, music and artistic excellence. Their students often go on to have successful careers in their field of expertise, as the school dedicates themselves to honing the talents of each of their students.
Each year during the first school term, the NSA presents their Festival of The Arts, in partnership with Joburg Theatre. Five days of pure entertainment for young and old, the Festival of the Arts is more than just a school showcase. Students not only get to perform and exhibit their work to their parents and peers, but to industry professionals as well. This means that the quality of their work is perfected to highlight their greatest talents. Across the board, from musical theatre to visual art, choral music and even fashion design, the NSA students bring their very best to offer you amazing entertainment.
Whether your child is a performer themselves or simply interested in engaging with their school setworks in a fun, interactive way, this is the perfect family-fun outing. Teachers are also welcomed to bring their classes to the festival at discount block prices. For more information about this, please contact Charmaine Stander on 011 399-6539 ext 208 or via email at [email protected].
This year, the NSA Festival of the Arts commemorates 19 years of bringing Joburg audiences the best youth arts festival in the city. The lineup for 2020 is astounding, with a wide variety of shows on offer. Here are our top picks for the season:
Shakespeare's great tragedy, Hamlet, is the Grade 12 setwork for 2020. Often difficult to understand for students unfamiliar with Elizabethan English and the great existential question "to be, or not to be", Hamlet is a challenging literary mountain to tackle for matriculants. Thankfully, the NSA have reworked this classic masterpiece for the Festival of the Arts 2020 showcase, bringing you Hip Hop Hamlet on stage at the Mandela Theatre. Masterfully weaving Shakespeare's iambic pentameter into a rhythmic hip hop beat, a team of NSA directors and their students bring Hamlet straight into the 21st century.
Hip Hop Hamlet will be staged at Joburg Theatre for the duration of the festival. Click here for more information on dates, times and pricing for this show.
Hidden Language is the flagship production for the 2020 NSA Festival of the Arts. An immersive dance piece, Hidden Language delves into the biographies of the performers, asking what dance means to them. Choreographed by Sean Bovim and Mandla Sunnyboy Motau Ntuli, with the collaboration of NSA teachers and star pupils.
See Hidden Language on stage at Joburg Theatre between Wednesday, 04 March 2020 - Sunday, 08 March 2020. Click here to book your tickets.
The critically acclaimed stage adaptation of Jean Guillou's semi-autobiographical novel, Evil, will be presented as part of the NSA Festival of the Arts. Hot off their season at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square, the creative team behind this gripping drama will set up shop at Joburg Theatre. Ready to thrill audiences with a tale about the abusive and oppressive world of institutionalised bullying, Jaques De Silva plays the lead character, Erik, who heads up a teenage gang after suffering years of abuse at the hands of his step-father.
Evil is an intense work, but its message is deeply poignant, especially in the age of cyber bullying. Bring your teens along to see it between Thursday, 05 March 2020 - Sunday, 08 March 2020 at Joburg Theatre. Click here for more information.
"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."
The NSA music department presents Music Makers at the 2020 Festival of the Arts on stage at the Lesedi Theatre. Featuring top NSA music students and guest alumni, this musical soirée is set to be an unforgettable experience. This is not to be missed.
The fourth Industrial Revolution is the buzz word of the moment. Parents, bring your older kids to the Elements 4IR exhibition at the NSA Festival of the Arts to get a taste of their future. Featuring an alternate reality exhibition, as well as VR and robotics displays, this is a must-see for kids with an interest in the bridge between technology and art.
Sophie Labelle is an internationally renowned visual artist and author from Montréal. Paul Slabolepszy's Suddenly The Storm thunders into the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino this March. This highly acclaimed award-winning play, returns for a limited three-week season in Joburg after its world premiere at the Market Theatre in 2016.
Suddenly The Storm has been described as one of the most powerful South African plays since the birth of democracy. Set in contemporary South Africa, on Johannesburg's East Rand, the play poses the question of whether the wounds of the past can ever really be healed.
The action takes place at the home of an ageing ex-cop (Dwayne) and his much younger wife (Shanell). Combative, volatile, constantly on the verge of exploding, they are two halves of a white South African working-class couple, living an uneasy truce as they struggle with the day-to-day trials of scraping together a living and dreaming competing dreams.
Beneath Dwayne's angry, violent exterior lies the heartbreak that governs his attitude to life. He is a man in mourning. Shanell believes his current level of despair was sparked by the death of his childhood friend and recent work partner, Jonas, but the source of his mourning and anger lies much further back.
When suddenly, a storm approaches, it's not Dwayne or Shanell expect. Enter the elegant Namhla Gumede, born on 16 June 1976. Seeking answers to questions that have remained buried for 40 long years, her arrival reveals long hidden truths.
Suddenly The Storm was initially launched to coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprisings. What begins as a smoldering dark comedy, suddenly turns into a roller-coaster ride of startling revelations, of rage and recrimination, before the storm finally breaks.
Paul Slabolepszy needs no introduction; having written more than thirty-five plays as well as radio, television and film scripts over a 50 year career. His many plays include Saturday Night at the Palace; Mooi Street Moves, Boo to the Moon, Making like America, Smallholding, Braait Laaities, Pale Natives, My Low-Fat Almost Italian Wedding, the multi-award-winning The Return of Elvis du Pisanie and Heel Against the Head (with the inimitable Bill Flynn as Tjokkie).
Slabolepszy's theatre is the kind that throws up a whirlwind of mixed emotions - greed, love, loss and healing. Touching on distinctly South African topics that make this country so rich and rewarding for those who can brave its storms. Suddenly the Storm is directed by Bobby Heaney and features Renate Stuurman (as Namhla), Charmaine Weir-Smith (as Shanell) and Paul Slabolepszy (as Dwayne). Expect powerful acting, inspired writing and incisive direction, promising to make this production a truly memorable event.
It’s a terribly moving play and the message of optimism comes at a time when we are all foundering. While it’s a very real play, so utterly real, it’s highly entertaining.
- Director Bobby Heaney
Thursday, 12 March 2020 - Sunday, 29 March 2020.

Artist, Jake Parker pioneered the global Inktober initiative in 2009. Ten years on, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, with thousands of artists participating each October. Thirty days of drawing prompts are posted at the start of the month, encouraging artists to enhance their skills and confidence by drawing something based on each day's prompt. You can take it day by day, a week at a time or only do as many as you have time for. The ultimate goal of Inktober is to encourage positive drawing habits. So, stop making those excuses and get drawing! After all, practice makes perfect.
While Inktober is a creative challenge, there are a couple of guidelines you must follow:
Here is the official list of prompts for Inktober 2019, to get you on your way to doodle mastery:
Now, remember that these prompts need not be taken literally. You may interpret them however you wish. All drawing styles are encouraged too, so whether you have an MFA in illustration or are an amateur doodler, anything goes. It's all about unleashing your creativity.
Where better to find artistic inspiration than Johannesburg? The city is filled with interesting characters, eclectic architecture and the beauty of nature interwoven with man-made elements. If the Inktober 2019 prompt list isn't enough to get your creative juices flowing, check out these awesome events happening in the city.
How can we use art to share our stories? While an artist might use a pencil or paintbrush, a photographer shares what they see through a camera. WITS Art Museum hosts monthly Drop-In Drawing events themed around the current exhibitions on show at the gallery. This month's Drop-In Drawing event explores techniques used by Daylin Paul to share the stories in the Broken Land exhibition, which will be exhibited until the end of October. In this Drop-In Drawing session, you will use Daylon's techniques to tell your stories and create your own artwork.
