Find your nearest Lindt Chocolate Studio and get your hands on all the different types of chocolate that you know your Valentine loves, throw them into a gift bag or wrap them and voilà – a sweet Valentine’s Day gift is ready! You can either create your own “lucky packet” from choosing a selection of decadent chocolates in the many different flavours, or you can take your pick from the boxes they have ready and waiting. The LINDOR Strawberries & Cream chocolates look just divine and nothing says “I love you” like a LINDOR Heart Tin filled with choccies.

There’s Loads Of Stuff At Woolies

We all know and love Woolies, and they’re always there when we need them, especially on Valentine’s Day when we have NO gift in hand for our special someone! Here, you can pick up a bouquet of flowers (if they haven’t all sold out yet), grab a box of chocolates or a few sweet treats, pick out the best bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, maybe even get your hands on his or her favourite fragrance and shop for some sexy lingerie. There are so many options to choose from. And if all else fails, there’s always a Woolies voucher or a homemade dinner for two, thanks to all the goodies at Woolies Food.

Something Cheesy From The Crazy Store

You wouldn't associate The Crazy Store with Valentine's Day, but here we are! And to think about it, they have quite a few cute and cheesy Valentine's Day goodies to put a smile on your sweetheart's face. Let's be honest, if there's one day you can be cheesy, it's definitely on Valentine's Day. Best of all, their gift ideas won't bust your budget. They have cute little things from helium foil balloons, plushy toys and lovey dovey mugs to novelty voucher booklets, wooden plaques with sweet messages on them and heart-shaped candy.

Pamper Treats From The Body Shop

Get them a gift card for a massage or Dry Bar session, get your hands on a bunch of lovely products or choose a pretty gift set. Here, you’ll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. Just pop into your nearest store. Luckily, you can find one almost everywhere you go. And for him, why not gift him with a pamper session at Sorbet Man! There's also a nice selection of products if he's into that sort of thing.

Get Your Spoils At Edgars Beauty

They have a bunch of fab gifting ideas for him and her. “Like what?” you might wonder… well, let’s share a few ideas with you. Gifts for him: Hydroflask coffee mug, a Red-E RSP80 Power Bank, a GoPro Hero 5 and a Zartek ZA-748 Two Way Radio. And for her: Volcano Motion Bluetooth headphones, the Victorinox Cape Protea tool or Sunski Originals sunglasses. The options are endless.

When In Doubt, Check Out Gift Experience South Africa!

No matter where you are in South Africa, you'll find something fun, exciting, thrilling or even relaxing for that special someone. What can you expect? Well, you can spend some quality time together making chocolate truffles in Muldersdrift, indulge a little with a chocolate and champagne pairing or spend an afternoon quad biking out in Parys. Visit Gift Experience South Africa to see what else they have to offer.

Spoil Your Bookworm With Exclusive Books

Another idea if your partner is a little bit of a bookworm, get them their favourite book for Valentine's Day from the best book stop of them all - Exclusive Books! Make it a romance since it IS Valentine's Day (they have plenty of those). And if you're not too sure if he/she is the romantic novel type or if they enjoy the thrills that a gripping mystery offers, then there's always the option of getting them a gift voucher, which leads us into our next gifting idea...

Just Go Crazy On Vouchers!

You can’t go wrong with vouchers! And best of all, you can find them absolutely anywhere and everywhere. Sure, it might be a little less personal, but as long as you get the right store voucher, at least some thought went into it. If she likes clothes shopping, get her an Edgars, Woolworths, Truworths or YDE voucher. If he enjoys gaming, visit BT Games or Steam and buy him some new games.

The Old Faithful - NetFlorist

She could be on a business trip in Durban and you can still spoil her with something sweet. Click here to take a look at all the Valentine's goodies they have lined up, pick your favourite, enter all their details, pull out that credit card, pay and BOOM. Done. As easy as that. See, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be difficult.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Their Humble Beginnings

Samantha Berger gave up her life in the corporate world to fulfil a dream of making a difference to the lives of many abused, abandoned and neglected domestic animals. Starting with two litters of stray kittens housed in her spare room, soon Samantha was caring for over 300 animals with the help of 18 staff members.

Needless to say, the journey has been fraught with what has seemed like insurmountable mountains to climb, tears and heartache. They have had to move properties three times before finding their current property in Midrand. They have been crippled by burglaries and faced the devastation of a fire. Rand Water tore up their property, with very little compensation, and made it almost impossible for them to operate for seven full months. But the challenges they face fade away when they look at all the lives they save.

Cat

Creating A Happy Home For Animals

Kitty and Puppy Haven have seen the most broken and traumatised animals learn to trust again. They nurse their fur babies physically and emotionally and make them whole again. And Samantha and her team say there can be no greater reward. Their slogan is 'We Change Their Destiny'. Once an animal comes into their care, no expense is spared to meet all that animal’s needs and to find them the perfect forever home. Some animals, like their feral cats, will spend the rest of their days at Kitty and Puppy Haven as they can't be homed. But this foundation still loves those animals like their own and sees to their every need. Anyone who has seen their Cat Sanctuary will attest to this.

Right now, Kitty and Puppy Haven are in crisis mode. Their sanctuary is closed due to the national lockdown. They have had to move 14 members of staff onto the property, both to care for their animals and for their own safety. Kitty and Puppy Haven are housing and feeding them and doing everything possible to ensure their comfort during this time. Their operating costs have risen and they have absolutely no income. They still have to pay salaries, rates, water and electricity, provide food for their animals and staff and pay for veterinary visits and care. Their operating costs are over R250 000 per month. And at the moment, they are unable to conduct fundraisers, receive physical donations, operate their shop or process any adoptions.

Cat

How Are They Coping During This Time?

Some may ask why Kitty and Puppy Haven did not go the foster route and seek homes for their animals during lockdown. The answers are simple:

How Can You Make A Difference?

The situation is dire and that is why Samantha and her team are appealing to the public for help. They are asking the public to help them get through by making a donation, no matter how big or small. Anything will help and will be greatly appreciated. It can be a once off, or a monthly donation (just request a debit order form). They are a registered Public Beneficiary Organisation, so donations can be tax deductible and they can issue an 18A tax certificate.

Hide and Treat

This is a little game we like to call Hide and Treat - you place treats around the house for your dog to find! When they find the treats they are rewarded by eating them. By playing this game you will help to create new routines in your dog's day-to-day life.

Maybe Take A Walk Around The House

Dog walks are important and beneficial to both dogs and humans. We're all indoors and our fur babies are growing a little impatient with just lazing around the house, but being indoors is no excuse to not take a walk with your dog around the house!

Dog Toys Are For Hoomans Too

When it comes to buying dog toys, go for a toy that you and your dog can play with together. Try out interactive toys, maybe even one of those fun food dispensing toys we’ve seen everywhere online. Playing with interactive toys helps mentally stimulate them, and the same goes for you.

How About You School Your Dog?

People usually take their dogs to obedience training classes. But since you're home the internet is here to save the day! You can try a few YouTube training videos to just help you along the way. These videos will help you communicate better with your dog and teach your dog how to sit, how to fetch and many other tricks.

Dog Play Dates

If you have more than one dog, then this is definitely something you should do at home. Getting your pets to interact and get along with each other is important! To help them feel more familiar and comfortable with each other, you need to allow them to play together and share toys.

What Is It?

Every child has the right to play! At Play Africa, Johannesburg's children's museum, they welcome children of all abilities. Their Sensory Saturdays are special days offering sensory play activities and unique learning environments that especially aim to include children on the autism spectrum and children with other special needs. Families with children with special needs have told them that these mornings have helped foster happy, memorable play as a whole family.

About Cat Village

Cat Village has been in operation since 2004. To date, they have taken in approximately 1000 cats who have found their forever home at the Cat Village. The cats at this village are not available for adoption as they come from horrific and stressful situations and need special care.

Cats

Cat Village is a safe, happy and stress-free environment where the cats can roam free. They live on two hectares of natural vegetation, dotted with wooden Wendy houses for shelter. All cats are sterilised, well fed and have water available 24 hours a day, ensuring they are always well cared for.

Who Made It All Possible?

Irma Teller is the special lady who devoted herself to the rescue of abused, abandoned and homeless cats. She and her husband, Herbert, have always had a desire to create a cat sanctuary where they could care and look after unwanted and neglected felines. Their dream became a reality when they found a property in Benoni and turned it into a haven for many cats.

Gratitude Restaurant

Who Runs The Show?

“Come and taste our Sea Bass and Haloumi Salad,” says proprietor Nomzoli Cwane. Who exudes the patient resilience, and tolerance of a people’s person, and of a successful restaurateur. She further explains that you need to understand your customers and to be aware of the dynamics of a restaurant. Nomzoli says she's always had the entrepreneurial spirit and love for food. She is a wife, a mother of three, and a businesswoman, who grew up in the village of Engcobo in the Eastern Cape. They started the business as a family, and have been involved in a franchise for five years now, their business employs 25 people. The restaurant is huge, with a cool interior and regal gold light fittings, lots of glass and a pleasing airiness.

What To Expect?

This is a family restaurant where attentive service and elegant décor combine in a busy hum of happy staff and clientele. The experience comes together over awesome food, a sense of style and warmth, for families, parents and children, romantic dates, business networkers, and old friends.

Seafood-based the restaurant is fast becoming famous for its fabulous platters and combos. How does Moorish skewers sound? Chicken skewers rubbed with Middle Eastern spice and served with a dipping sauce. I am already hungry just thinking about it.

Meat lovers will definitely go mad over those succulent rib eye stakes grilled to customer's specifications, and fabulous prawn tacos. With a wide variety of sides to choose from. The seafood pasta is the best ever made, don't believe us? Go taste it for yourself!

Gratitude Restaurant

What More Do They Have In Store For You?

They also do private dining, and semi-private dining for smaller groups, you just need to make sure you make a booking before hand. Every last Sunday of the month is Jazz and live music day. They like to feature artists on their way up to boost their visibility. "We Africans like to mingle with people and music connects people and the jazz we offer is not that old, deep jazz", she says with a smile. It seems like the future for Gratitude is super bright because they believe that it is a strong brand we also agree, having the potential for growth. Seeing that it attracts people from all corners of the world, and growing to become a franchise one day.

'Tis The Season

Reconciling their Christmas puddin’ with some new friends at Nkosi’s Haven

This festive season, Nkosi's Haven in Alan Manor in the south of Joburg, is celebrating 16 December, Reconciliation Day, in a special way. While it also happens to be the second-busiest shopping day after Christmas Eve, some people have chosen to ditch the malls and another day of pap, dop en chop to rather spend their public holiday helping the residents of Nkosi’s Haven have a wonderful Christmas.

Nkosi's Haven is run by the 'Red Hair with Flair', Gail Johnson, the foster mother of the late Nkosi Johnson. This holistic care facility offers support for destitute HIV/Aids- infected mothers, their children, and the resultant Aids orphans (infected or not). Sunday 16 December will see some tenants of The Parks and many others hosting a fun event for the 73 children and mothers who have nowhere to go over Christmas.

Nkosi's Haven

What To Expect

Park Café is making and supplying gingerbread houses for the kids to decorate and eat and soft drinks will be provided by Wine & Liquor. The Angel Network will make their Christmas really special with gifts for each child. There will also be a beauty element to the day that the little ladies and their moms will love. Hair demos will be offered by Hair2Go and samples given out of hair products – perfect for teenage girls and boys. Crystal Clear Skin Care will do facials and skincare routine education while sharing samples of Filorga skincare products.

SAMA-nominated and gold-selling singer-songwriter Rob Rodell is the MC for the event and he will be rounding off the day with some great entertainment.

Nkosi's Haven

Will You Be There?

At a loose end on the 16th? Please offer your support for the companies involved in making the day memorable for the Nkosi's Haven residents. And if you have a spare Christmas stocking, the mothers and kids would really appreciate it. Come and join us!

An hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Sterkfontein is made up of a series of limestone caves which are world-famous for their fossil finds. It's a popular destination for both tourists and locals. Following a remodelling in 2005, the Sterkfontein Caves site is now home to restaurants and conference facilities, with easy access to the caves on walkways, as well as a boardwalk that goes past the excavation site where the important fossils were discovered.

The Sterkfontein Caves are owned by the University of the Witwatersrand, whose scientists have been responsible for the main excavations at this World Heritage Site. Maropeng Visitor Centre is an award-winning, world-class exhibition showcasing the development of our ancestors over millions of years. It takes you on an interactive journey back in time, starting with the formation of the planet and moving all the way through the evolutionary processes that culminated in the world as we know it today. Here you can see fossils, ancient stone tools and much more. It's a self-guided tour so you can take your time and lose yourself in the origins of humankind.

If you'd like to stay over, the Maropeng Boutique Hotel on-site is the epitome of luxury accommodation in the Cradle of Humankind. You can use it as your base to make the most of exploring this part of Gauteng.
