Kyalami, the pride of Midrand is known for its Grand Prix Racecourse, horse stables, and even a massive Medieval castle. Who would have thought that Johannesburg's northern-most region would become even cooler? Well, now it has, thanks to plant-based fast food joint, Lekker Vegan. The Cape Town-based eatery opened its first Gauteng store at Kyalami On Main.

Making it Lekker

Dedicated since 2017 to making you lekker plant-based comfort foods with the best meat, cheese, and dairy alternatives, so you won’t feel like you are missing out! Lekker Vegan is the brainchild of animal rights activist and restaurateur James Knaap, who honed his skills as a chef in a vegan fast food joint in Amsterdam.
Truth is, most vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians didn’t choose plant-based because they don’t like the taste of meat and dairy. For most, it is for health, environmental or ethical reasons. Making vegan food taste like foods you are used to or even better, makes transitioning into a more plant-based diet a whole lot more... lekker.

Lekker Vegan

The Lekker Vegan Menu

A plethora of veganised versions of fast-food favourites is available – including hamburgers, nachos, nuggets, chip rolls, Gatsby’s, and even ice cream. The burgers are beyond phenomenal, by far the best items on the menu, coming in close to the legendary Gatsby's. Surprisingly, the patties are super juicy, full of flavours and bursts with umami goodness. It tasted like a slightly under-seasoned, lighter version of a beef burger, to be honest, which is still good in our books. Another winner on the menu would be the sweet potato fries, garlic "mayonnaise" and "chicken nuggets".  Our suggestion would be that you take your time when going through the menu, it's a beast and a half.

Cafè Hemingway's At First Glance

Cafè Hemingway's is situated within an unassuming shopping centre in Kyalami. However, this New York style bistro, bar and patisserie is anything but ordinary. Upon entrance, you immediately pick up the vibe of the place - a space for intimate conversation with old friends, brimming with the glow of satisfied customers. There is an outdoor seating area should you be in need of a little fresh air or some fair Joburg sunshine. But, the real magic takes place inside.

Drink Me

Firstly, the bar is a marvel. Aptly named Bar Hemingway's, this handmade copper bar is stocked with over 140 different whiskies from all over the world, including Japan, India and Ireland. The bar team offer tastings and food pairings at your request. And, if you aren't a fan of whisky, they offer rum, wine or champagne tasting experiences.

Cafe Hemingways

Eat Me

Bar Hemingway's also boasts an impressive gastro pub menu. Their most notable dishes include the Atticus Finch platter (think gourmet cheeses, cold meats & smoked salmon, served with assorted pickled vegetables & fresh baked artisan bread). If you are looking for something more filling, try out one of their gourmet burgers. The 'Whopper Toppa' features a massive real beef patty and a variety of perfectly paired toppings with shoestring fries.

Alternatively, ask for the bistro menu, which is a little more fine dining. The restaurant's in-store specials change daily depending on what their team of chefs source at organic markets. Pop in for one of their famous breakfast delights - pancakes dripping with mascarpone cheese and fresh fruit, or a full English breakfast. Or, take that special someone on a one-of-a-kind date night. Indulge in authentic ceviche (Efrain - served with citrus quinoa, micro coriander & fresh chillies), while sipping on fine wine under romantic incandescent light.

Personalised High Tea

While Cafè Hemingway's savoury menu is a treat to behold, their dessert selection is where they really shine. You could opt to visit the restaurant and enjoy a few sweet delights off their pre-set menu. Or, you could go all out and contact them to craft a personalised high tea for yourself and up to 10 friends. The cafès high tea experience is centered around an old-fashioned sensibility - that high tea is an event which should be slowly savoured. Nevertheless, their master pâtissier's are happy to custom design the menu for your high tea event. And, while they do root themselves in classic pastry making, their contemporary creations often break the mould (quite literally).

There are a selection of themes to choose from for your customised high tea event. Opt for the Alice In Wonderland experience, or the Isobel high tea for a classic and romantic event. If you are more of a rabble rousing tea lover, go for the Great Gatsby themed party or the Run for the Roses experience - a Kentucky themed high tea. Your menu will be planned according to your chosen theme and any dietary specifications you may have. Hemingway's will also bake you a custom birthday cake to accompany your tea if you so wish.

Behind Closed Doors Lies A Sleeping Wonderland

As a closing note, we have to mention the special secret high tea venue tucked neatly away behind the main restaurant area. What looks like a simple bookcase adorned with hardback covers, is actually a set of sliding doors. The doors open onto a private dining area, featuring a large wooden table, able to seat up to 10 guests. Book lovers will be amazed by the wonderment of this room. Secret high tea surrounded by books... what could be better?

Heading north toward Midrand, Kyalami is a playground for those who enjoy picnics, walks in the park and, of course, the world-renowned racing circuit. The suburb is also known for a variety of restaurants, most of them at Kyalami Corner and the Kyalami Downs Shopping Centre.

One of these, Ristorante La Trinita, was featured in Time magazine as one of only two restaurants in South Africa which made it onto the list of their 100 Best Places to Eat in the World feature. Lala and Tessa are the proud and energetic owners who will welcome you with a hug by the second visit. Their melanzane is like no other. Order it! And the lasagne is to die for.

The South African Lipizzaners academy hosts magnificent performances every Sunday morning in their indoor hall which last an hour and are pure joy to behold. Refreshments and are available before and after the performance and tickets can be bought at the door. After each performance, the stables are open to the public and everyone is invited to feed the horses and enjoy a snack at Café Capriole.

Castle Kyalami can be seen on the ridge of this suburb and it was built by Greek millionaire and architect Demos Dinopoulos as his private home. He later sold his 8.9 ha estate to Planet Hotels which converted the castle into a spa, hotel, restaurant and wedding venue. Almost a decade after that, Planet Hotels sold the property to the South African Church Of Scientology and it is now a mission post. To the best of our knowledge, you can't go hang out at the dining hall or poolside anymore but you can snap a couple of pics of the compound from a distance.

While in Kyalami, be sure to visit the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. This iconic venue hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix during the 80s and 90s, and the Moto GP during the early 2000s. The property was snatched up on auction by Porsche South Africa for R205-million in 2014 and underwent an extensive refurbishment. The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit now stages a variety of exciting events during the course of the year, so do yourself a favour and check out the events calendar on their website.

In April 2016 we were invited to a media conference held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. To prepare for the meeting we did a little bit of research on the place . It is shrouded in interesting facts. For instance, it opened in 1961 and was used to host the South African leg of the Formula One Grand Prix Championship until international sanctions were imposed because of apartheid. The original circuit was rated as one of the most dangerous tracks in pro racing and claimed the death of Welsh F1 driver, Tom Pryce. Bends and turns such as the infamous Leeukop Bend and the Kink were removed.

Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit

The new Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit

Skip a couple decades and we're standing on the revamped, redesigned and ultra-modern Kyalami Grandprix Circuit. In 2012, the plot went up for auction. Most of those who attended the bidding wanted to bust down the pit building, rip up the tarmac and turn 77 acres of racing history into middle market apartment blocks. This was curbed by Toby Venter of Porsche South Africa who won the auction with a bid of R205 million. To Toby the 77 acre property is more than just a piece of land with curves and bends of asphalt on it. For decades Toby has spent time with his family at the iconic race track. He sees it as part of South African automotive history that must be restored and preserved for future generations. That is why events such as the SA Festival Of Motoring are now possible — because there is a world class venue available.

Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit

With Porsche South Africa's acquisition of the property, the subsequent revamp of key buildings and a new game plan, Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has evolved above and beyond the regular race and track days. Events such as Comic Con Africa, the DSTV Delicious Festival and the Baby Show have made Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit their host venue of choice.

For the annual calendar check out Kyalami Grand Prix.

The recently revamped Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and International Convention Centre in Midrand has evolved into so much more than just a weekend hangout for petrol heads. It is shrouded in interesting facts.

Where it all began

For instance, it opened in 1961 and was used to host the South African leg of the Formula One Grand Prix Championship until international sanctions were imposed because of Apartheid. The original circuit was rated as one of the most dangerous tracks in pro racing and claimed the death of Welsh F1 driver, Tom Pryce. Bends and turns such as the infamous Leeukop Bend and the Kink were removed. Today the track is not only a place to burn rubber but a great spot hosting events and conventions, such as the first-ever Comic-Con in Africa.
