Where To Eat

If there is one thing you should know about Kramerville is that it's not known for its culinary culture but... there are quite a few really, really, really... REALLY good restaurants that need to be on your radar screen!

Located in Kramerville Corner, Gorge is a coffee shop where you want to be seen. Whether it's a tasty sandwich, wholesome salad, filling wrap or buttery croissant paired with the finest coffee or latte, we implore you to check out Gorge. The eatery serves breakfast and lunch and is a great meeting spot for a quick catch up with friends and family or a solo working session. The java is good and the WiFi decent - what more do you need? We recommend the salmon and cream cheese croissant, the bacon blue burger, and Gorge's Moroccan lamb bowl.

Razor Charlie recently added (well, at the time of writing anyway) a few more vegan/vegetarian meals to the menu. Off the bat, we suggest you try the chicken pot pie, steak tacos, and their amazing spicy fries.

Where To Party

Sir James van der Merwe/ Katy's Palace Bar

Long story short, Sir James van der Merwe took it upon himself to go on a gentleman's quest to find the perfect place to enjoy a drink. He found Katy's and set up shop there. More than a bar, Sir James van der Merwe is an experience, a concoction of old-time charm infused with laid-back sophistication and a twist of Joburg. Strike up casual conversations, linger over a game of billiards and raise a glass to good company. Sir James van der Merwe is open every Wednesday night from 4pm for after work drinks.

Dakota Lee

What happens when you fuse a tattoo parlour with cutting-edge interior design and a well-stocked bar? You end up with a rockabilly hangout worth paying a visit. Dakota Lee is a great place to get your buzz on (that would be the buzz of a tattoo machine) and then grab a lekker drink with a couple of close friends. The vibe is super chilled, the beer cold, and the cocktails mixed by more-than-capable-hands. The venue also features an art gallery and retail space, embracing the full spectrum of tattoo culture.

Exquisite Cuts

We love the fact that owner-manager Heather Lund Truter gave up a ten-year career as a private banker in order to start this amazing store in Kramerville. In a nutshell, Exquisite Cuts offers hand-picked short-ends – remnants and end of range fabrics from local and international décor houses. This means that YOU get the best fabrics, but for so much less!

The range is constantly evolving and changing as new fabrics become available. I opted for some ready-made cushions to refresh my living room. I was spoilt for choice with a wide range of phenomenal fabrics from which to choose. But it doesn’t stop there – you can also buy discounted upholstery and curtaining fabric at a variety of price points. All of this just makes redecorating so much more affordable and FUN!

exquisite cuts

The Exquisite Cuts team

What impressed me most about the store is the passionate and insightful team that does so much more than just sell fabric. They are quick to offer advice, insight, suggestions and creative ideas to help you transform a tired room into something that reflects your family. You can bring photos with you and ask for advice. The team will then help you come up with an action plan that suits your time and budget. I prefer using very inexpensive fabric for curtaining and then ramping up the look with stunning accent cushions – that way, I get a brand new look for a fraction of the price (and yes, I have both “summer” and “winter” cushions – you will too when you visit this amazing shop!)

exquisite cuts

Another bonus is that Exquisite Cuts also offers ready-made curtains (an absolute win for those looking for instant gratification). They have a team of tried-and-tested curtain-makers if you’d like something made to spec.

Follow the store on Facebook to keep updated with new fabric lines that become available. In brief, I would highly recommend popping in for a browse and to treat yourself to new cushions for your Master Bedroom or living room. Take photos before you go – you’ll be amazed at what the team suggests and the difference it will make to your space, without breaking the bank.

PLUS you get to #SupportLocal!

Their pieces are striking and modern; easy to picture in a Maboneng loft or Sandhurst mansion. Think gorgeous stainless steel coupled with mustard velvets; upholstery in hues of greys and champagnes and cabinets made from wood. They also offer Interior Design Services, so give them a call if you're needing a home overhaul.

You've not experienced amazing sound and tech until you've paid Icons a visit in Kramerville. It's more than a music and audio store, it's an experience complete with a top notch kitchen staffed with people obsessed with pushing culinary boundaries. We highly recommend that you swing by Icons and experience it for yourself. To boot, Icon also hosts a wide variety of events: from cooking classes to movie nights, there truly is something for everyone. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to fabric choice – woven, quilted, kelim, velvet, linen – and pattern. Go find something special.

Tonic Design

Minimalistic designs have been making a strong stand in the design world. If you like neat, simple and classy, then Tonic Design is the place to go. We particularly love the Nova bed design – its clean lines will look good in any modern bedroom.

For artistic pieces, treasures with a rustic look or Africa inspired pieces, Amatuli is the place to go. We adore the African face mask display sets and the black and white fine art portraiture by David Ballam.

Living Kitchens – Bulthaup

Looking for premium and high-end kitchen designers who have worked in southern Africa and beyond? Then look no further than Living Kitchens – Bulthaup. They understand that the kitchen is the heart of any home or, as they would put it, the focal point of your home. Who better to design your kitchen than them? Check out their showroom for inspiration.

Classic Bond Decor

Looking for elegant decor items that wont break the bank? Then we recommend you head to Classic Bond Decor. This classic Le Med mini chaise is just the piece for a cosy reading corner, while the contemporary white painted server will look elegant in any dining room.

Dejan Custom Furniture

Dejan Custom Furniture prides itself in designing quality and stylish bespoke furniture for its niche clientele. We absolutely adore the circle mirrors in their accessories section. Have a look and be dazzled.

Dreamweaver Studios

Are you more of a wallpaper than paint person? Then Dreamweaver is the place to go. It's a designer's little haven as they offer both wallpaper and remarkable fabrics. Best still, if you need more time to ponder and decide what you like, they have sample books available.

If you've always had a thing for Italian design, Eurocasa should be your first stop the next time you're in Kramerville. Have a look at their gallery for stunning room sets, including kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms.

A few years ago, Kramerville was comprised solely of fabric and furniture stores and felt very industrial. A recent revisit brought to light what a far cry it is to its former self. Okay, maybe not that different because a number of the original stores remain. However, a new look has been introduced based on the premise of a safe, clean, almost cordoned-off area in Sandton. Coffee shops and restaurants are additions to the many design stores, making Kramerville a friendly and inviting burb to explore. I adore Katy’s palace bar which prides itself on its likeness to a palace (I would say more of an upmarket loft) in décor and feel. It’s perfect for cocktail parties, corporate events and sit-down dinners. What's more, they leave the choice of décor up to you when you book. You can select from various designer themes such as white wedding, sunset terrace, African banquet and others. They even have their Royal Tuk Tuk service to cart your guests around the area.

Wild Eye

Wild Eye is situated in Fourways - perfect for all the creative young couples who have congregated there. They offer photographic courses including practical experience. Choose from a few topics and locations such as a day trip to the Kruger Park to photograph wildlife. Once you’re a more experienced photographer, you can select one of their photographic safaris or travel packages. There’s the option of guided tours during which an experienced professional can assist you with the composition of your shots, or you are welcome to simply enjoy the beauty that is to be find through the lens.

The newly opened Bolton Road Collection is part of Rosebank's recent facelift. A fresh new restaurant and cocktail bar kitted with screed flooring, unusual lighting designs and exposed brick walls – you’d expect it to feel cold and stark but their furnishings, incredible food and warm atmosphere make it the perfect end of week stop. If you’re in a shopping mood, then head up to Rosebank Mall which has introduced a variety of upmarket stores and restaurants. There are holiday workshops for kids and expos for adults too. They've also brought back their Sunday rooftop market, famous for the eclectic mix of food stuffs, books, antiques and African crafts. An added bonus is the car boot sale that takes place at the market on the last Sunday of every month. The wares range from old school toys, records and trinkets from days gone by to you name it... Come and see for yourself!

Cocktails and canvas

Cocktails and canvas in Rivonia uniquely pairs painting (yes, with brushes on canvas)  with fabuous cocktails. That’s right, let your creative juices flow with some alcoholic lubrication. Great for corporate events, private parties and their monthly open night during which anyone can join in. It’s great for meeting people, relaxing and expressing your creative self. A teacher guides you and the package includes your canvas, a cocktail upon arrival and loads of fun. No under 18’s. Further drinks can be purchased from the restaurant. Their sessions run on mornings, afternoons and evenings - so there’s no excuse not to go and explore this very different option!

Mark Valentine of Amatuli Artefacts has it tough. When I asked him what his business focus was he answered simply, “I’m a collector, and I’ve turned my hobby into my business.” He started some 20 years ago and has developed his passion from acquiring African artworks to collecting from all over the world. This means that he travels extensively, and he will shortly be leaving for a trip into outer Mongolia. He keeps extending his boundaries in search of the original and the unusual, and avoids Trade Fairs because “then you end up with the same things as everyone else!”

He has recently moved his business premises from Bramley to Kramerville, where he has two large showrooms fronting a spacious warehouse. I picked my way between and over a vast collection of different items that included carved giraffes, crocodiles and fish, wall hangings, grass baskets, unique and attractive benches, arrows, spears and knobkerries, carved figures and masks, horns and wooden antelope heads, large mirrors, wooden flasks and casks, jewellery, beadwork, pictures and a whole lot more. One of my favourites was the dugout canoes which fascinated me. I wondered what my family would say if they found one in the pool, filled with lush green plants shading some drinks and snacks!

Mark says that their business is split almost half and half between local and international outlets, with a small percentage of individual buyers. They send out between 200 and 300 items every day and their business has continued to flourish recently despite the general economic downturn.

What appealed to me so much was that I was not looking at curios that were mass produced in a factory somewhere for the tourist trade. Many of the items that I studied seemed to bear the imprint of the person who made them. They told a story of culture, beliefs, craftsmanship or rugged usefulness. There was something of life about many of them, a life that involved individuals with their hopes and fears, pains and joys. Spears were for hunting or defence, not for show, and on some the rough shafts bore the stains of use. Arrows looked as if they had known flight and impact. Small figures had a symbolic meaning. Heavy, carved round stones were for protecting the grain bins, and small pipes were for smoking. Behind each was a person, many knowing poverty and hardship, who were making their own way along the journey of life. I would never meet them, but a part of their life had impacted mine and needed to be respected.

If you are interested in history, people, Africa and unusual crafts and items you will take pleasure in wandering round. And if you are fortunate enough to find Mark there you will enjoy talking to him and hearing some of his stories. For those looking for something different to put in their homes or offices, something that has a story behind it, you might well find it here.

Keep your eyes on Kramerville. Mark tells me that a local version of 44 Stanley Road is being planned!
