Big L’s Levi’s Factory outlet located at the Woodmead Retail Park is a favourite among students, or anyone looking to up their street cred with a good pair of denim. The store mainly stocks classically tapered, skinny, straight and slim-cut jeans, however, you can find bootleg jeans too on occasion. There are also limited bits and pieces from bigger collections like the twisted fit, commuter and curve jeans. Also in stock are shirts, the odd accessory and shoes – but in very limited numbers.
Now for the big question – how much do they cost? You can get a pair of jeans for roughly R500 and a shirt for around R250, bearing in mind that it really depends on what the item is. Commuter jeans will never cost you R400.

Coricraft is one of South Africa’s favourite furniture stores and for good reason – their furniture is simple yet stunning, inspiring visitors to drop some cash at almost every visit. The real problem, however, is that we can’t all afford to fully kit out our houses in Coricraft's fine furniture as much as we might like to. The answer? Coricraft has a factory shop in Wynberg and it goes without saying that you can get great end-of-range furniture here without breaking the bank. Tip: Like most factory shops, these are limited, end-of-range products, so it’s probably advisable to visit every few weeks.

Ever seen someone wearing a really clever shirt with a truly South African phrase on it and wondered where it was from? That would be Big Blue. Trust us, if you’ve never popped into one of their stores, you should! Their summer gear is original and well-fitting, but let’s face it, anything that cool can’t be cheap and you’d be right to assume it. That’s where the Big Blue Factory Shop in Linden comes in. They stock all the same awesome apparel at a fraction of the price. Buy a few shirts at the beginning of summer and you’ve got your tees covered for the rest of the season.

The Best Of Ekurhuleni is a reader's choice award granted to businesses around the East Rand. According to the organisation, "The Best of Ekurhuleni Reader’s Choice Awards were established to inspire the residents of Ekurhuleni to celebrate the best of the best and inspire growth and prosperity in local business and organizations."
These awards are a great way for locals to learn more about their surroundings and to explore the best Ekurhuleni has to offer. While we can't mention all the award winners, we will discuss some of our favourites of the worthy winners.
Offering an assortment of delectable baked goods, treats and confectionery, George's is probably one of our favourite bakeries in Gauteng. We are nothing short of in love with the soft and airy Red Velvet Cupcakes, chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies and perfect Cheesecake. It seems every time we pop by they have something new to make our mouths water. As such, it is no surprise that they take home the awards for not one, but six categories. These include Best Coffee Shop, Best Bakery, Best Pies, Best Place For Party Platters, Best Bakery With Café and joint Best New Restaurant.
Tucked away in Benoni lies a beautiful Victorian house adorned with rose arches, crisp white window panes and a giant oak tree. This home has been renovated into one of the best bakeries in the East. In fact, according to Best Of Ekurhuleni, they are the Best Tea Garden. After sampling their delightful brunch, high tea and confectionery, we couldn't agree more. Spend a breezy summer afternoon lounging under a shady tree while indulging in a perfectly baked macaron. We recommend the granadilla or raspberry, but those more daring can opt for the salty sweet bacon treat.
East Rand Mall is the proud winner of Best Shopping Mall. Situated in Boksburg, this mall is home to several other winners, including Best Clothing Store For Him (Edgars) and Best Accessories (Lovisa). Featuring 180 retailers, restaurants and entertainment hubs, this mall has been the go-to for East Randers since 1992. Recently renovated, this mall now has even more parking space and a more modernised feel.
This bar meets pub, located in Modderfontein and Benoni, has won two awards in this year's Best Of Ekurhuleni. They take home the prestigious title of Best Craft Beer Pub. With nine beers on tap, 17 largers, 21 ales and a range of other suds on offer, we are not surprised. They also have a pretty good gin list, which is why they also took the Best Craft Gin Bar title. While sampling their bitter beer and ample gin, make sure to try the Green Pizza or Peanut Butter Burger. They may sound weird, but they're worth a taste.

This boulangerie and patisserie was originally at 1 Fox, but has recently opened up shop at the elite Hyde Park Corner. For those who are rusty in French, a boulangerie specialises in bread while a patisserie offers up delectable pastries. At Just Teddy, you can expect the most divine tarts, cakes and high teas - available in a meat or vegetarian option. They also have an a la carte menu, if you want to fill up before dessert.
Croydon Bakery, tucked away in Kempton Park, bakes the best pies in Joburg. They also have a wide range of pastries that are worth a try, we recommend the Gourmet Éclair or a tasty Apple Slice.

Home to the perfect chocolate chip cookie, cream cheese frosting and cheesecake, George's is a hidden bakery gem in the east. Their offerings also include yummy rosemary grissini, tantalising cupcakes and tarts and crusty bread for any occasion. Their pies and pastries are some of the best the city has to offer and the service is impeccable. We have yet to taste anything at this bakery that isn't perfect in consistency and taste.
Based in Braamfontein, Black Forest Bakery serves specialty German cakes, cookies and breads. All of their products are made using traditional methods. Bread, laugengebäck, cakes, tarts, bread rolls, breakfast pastries, biscuits and savouries are some of the products you'll find at this bakery. Their stollen, brezeln and Black Forest Rye are the best in town.
To find more places that serve up delicious and decadent treats, check out these patisseries in the city.
Perhaps the most renowned bakery of the east, Croydon Bakery bakes delectable bread, cakes, tarts and other confectionery on a daily basis. However, it is their pies that they are most famous for. These include steak, pepper steak, Cornish, sausage rolls, curry, chicken and mushroom, cottage and spinach feta cheese. All of their pies are homemade with flaky pastry and flavourful fillings.
This overnight Boksburg sensation stems from the same family tree as Croydon. George bakes the most amazing confections from scratch with the best ingredients available. Their crafts are some of the best we have ever had, from their freshly baked bread, light and fluffy cupcakes, perfect chocolate chip cookies, filling pies and the ultimate cheesecake. There is nothing at this bakery that we do not love.
This Dutch bakery was started in 1963 by William Verhoogt. They still use the same recipes and methods today as they did in 1963, with imported Dutch ingredients. All of their products are made in house with high quality, fresh ingredients. Products on offer include pies, bread, loaves, sweet confectionery, tarts and cakes. Above the bakery is the windmill restaurant, De Molen Pancake House and Restaurant, a replica of the Zeldenrust Molen in Holland.
Also located in Edenvale, the Bread Basket started in 1982 offering fresh baked goods and a quality deli. The bakery now offers quality confectionery which includes cakes, cake pops, tarts, scones, muffins, macaroons, cookies, pies, bread, doughnuts and pastries. Patrons come from far and wide for their delightful cakes, either full cakes, slices, cupcakes or filled cupcakes. We love the Red Velvet, Vanilla Custard, Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Mousse selections.
Another gem tucked away in Edenvale, this bakery and family restaurant serves up homemade meals, artisan breads, delicacies and Greek specialties. Greek confectionery offered include Eliopitas, Tiropita, Kourabiedes, Melomakarona, Bougatsa and Baklava, among others. The bakery also offers more traditional baked goods and an on-site restaurant offering breakfast, toasted sandwiches, omlettes, salads, prego, pizza and souvla.
Fournos in Boksburg offers scrumptious baked goods and confectionery. Here, you can get crusty breads, sweet cakes, a wide selection of pies, crumbly pastries and the best croissants outside of France. These flaky morsels are available in four flavours - plain, chocolate, almond and blueberry. Each one of these are mouth watering and delicious. Another favourite at this bakery are their cakes. The Bar One cake, in particular, is irresistible.

Emperors Palace in Kempton Park is known as the Palace of Dreams. This is quite apt when walking into the building. The doors are lined with statues of Antony and Cleopatra, the concave ceiling is constructed with stained glass and all the doorways are mantled with golden Greek-style arches. What better place to spend an evening dining on the Ambrosia of the Gods? Platia may not actually serve the Gods, but it certainly evokes that feeling.
Located directly across the largest statue in the building, under the cloudy ceiling, the restaurant looks and feels as if it's located on Mt. Olympus rather than Kempton Park. Unlike most Greek restaurants, Platia keeps the shades of sky blue and crisp white to a minimum. Instead, the walls are shades of cobalt blue, lined with sea-sand wooden finishes and completed with darkened, large, low-hanging lights.
Diners have the option of inside and outside seating. The inside seating feels more secluded and opulent while the exterior feels more relaxed and casual, yet stylish. The wooden tables are lined with comfortable white stools, one of the very few white touches in the decor. The only thing missing from this island paradise would be the Mediterranean sea. But the nearby fountain at least gives some tranquil nuances of being seaside.
Starters was a tough choice between the Tiropita and Spanokopita, feta and spinach pies, and the Pikilia, pitas with a choice of three dips. Ultimately, the Tiropita and Spanokopita won. The Tiropita is a triangular phyllo pastry parcel filled with feta and herbs. While the Spanokopita, also a phyllo pastry triangle, is stuffed with a creamy spinach filling. Both pies were served with a sweet chilli sauce.
Vegetarian mains was the Haloumi in Pita, which was a flat bread wrapped around huge golden nuggets of haloumi, fresh tomato cubes and slivers of onion, all topped with a rich and creamy tzatziki. The tzatziki was particularly delicious and just finished the wrap beautifully. This was served with some large, perfectly cooked chips in a tasty house-made seasoning.
Choices for the meaty mains were also difficult to make, so the Open Trio Souvlaki Plate made the most sense as it provides a little bit of everything. This huge plate consisted of three Souvlaki (marinated meat skewers), one chicken, lamb and beef. All of which were very flavourful and perfectly cooked. This was served with a side of Greek salad, lettuce, tomato, onions, olives and feta, dressed simply in olive oil and vinegar. Also, on the side were mini pitas and tzatziki as well as a side of chips. This meal certainly allows for a bit of mixing and matching, combining various flavours with others to find your favourite combinations.
As fulling as all this food was, we definitely couldn't leave without ending things on a sweet note. Again, choosing between the Halva Ice Cream, Rizogalo, Baklava and Loukoumades was an almost impossible. But in the end, we chose the Loukoumades. These are Greek-style doughnuts, drenched in cinnamon syrup and served with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. This is a must-try for any doughnut or cinnamon lover.
After gorging to the max on delectable Greek cuisine, there is no better way to relax and ease a full tummy than strolling through the Palace, taking in the sights of the store fronts, visitors taking selfies and the painted ceilings that make one think of Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel. After all, we are in the Palace of Dreams.
