The Cakery At La Tazzina

La Tazzina in Edenvale is one of our top spots for Saturday morning brunch. But until we can safely visit them again, a good slice of cake from their bakery will have to do. You can order a single slice of their best loved cakes for delivery, or contact them for a special order for your birthday. Choose from lemon drizzle cake, New York cheesecake, carrot cake, orange sponge, marble cake or chocolate ganache. The Cakery even makes custom dog birthday cakes for your precious pooches, so everyone can celebrate their birthday in lockdown!

Call or WhatsApp them on +27 67 627 9356 to place your order, or contact them via email at [email protected]

Another must-visit spot on our list for life post-lockdown is Frangelicas Kosher Patisserie in Glenhazel. This family-owned cake shop and cafe is renowned for its indulgent cheesecake, cupcakes and pastries. Their birthday cake menu is just as impressive, with over 16 varieties to choose from. Our personal favourite is their Lemon Meringue Cake - a delightful play on the classic tart. Frangelicas cakes are baked with absolute love and care, bringing a true feeling of home to any occasion. If you're the type of person who detests fondant on their birthday cake, this is the place to get yourself a good old traditional cake.

Order online from their website or contact them on [email protected].

Crumbs & Cream

Ice cream cakes have made a comeback thanks to Crumbs & Cream at Illovo Junction. What started out as a humble ice cream truck moving down the V&A Waterfront has turned into one of Joburg's top dessert spots. Thankfully, under level 3 lockdown you can now visit their store to order a quick takeaway. But if you're sparse on time, get online to order yourself one of their whimsical ice cream cakes. Decadently smooth ice cream sandwiched between giant biscuits and topped with an assortment of sweet sprinkles, what more could you need to have a smashing birthday?

You can order your ice cream birthday cake from Crumbs & Cream through the Mr Delivery, Uber Eats or Order In apps.

Fournos Bakery

There's nothing wrong with ordering your birthday cake from a tried and trusted bakery. Fournos Bakery has been whipping up scrumptious cakes and nibbles for decades. Plus, they have branches located all over Johannesburg, so no matter where you live you can get your cake delivered. Fournos offers a wide selection of classic cakes, as well as custom themed birthday cakes. If you would like to order a character cake for a kiddies party or for yourself, please give Fournos at least 14 days notice. A few of their other gourmet cakes also require a few days notice, so order in good time to avoid missing your birthday all together!

Order your cake from Fournos' website or contact your nearest branch here.

Need a little more birthday inspiration? Check out our guide to celebrating your big day in lockdown.

Celebrating your birthday in lockdown needn't be a downer. You still have the opportunity to celebrate your life journey, even from the confines of your own home. Birthdays are about much more than the trimmings after all. Your special day offers you the chance to reflect, reminiscence and create new memories. If you will be celebrating your birthday alone or with a few family members this year, make the best of it. Here's how:

Change Your Mindset

You have probably had to change your mindset and outlook on life a few times while in lockdown. As social distancing, excess hygiene and working from home become the new norm, we are constantly adjusting. Celebrating your birthday in lockdown is no different. It's important that you don't compare this birthday to your last and try not harbor on the fact that you can't go out with friends or throw yourself a big party. Even if this is a milestone birthday, you can always host a big blowout next year. Once you embrace your situation, you will be able to plan the very best lockdown birthday possible.

Bake A Cake

If you haven't already been baking up a storm in lockdown, your birthday is the perfect excuse to get out the mixers and measuring spoons. Even if you will be celebrating alone, you should put in that extra effort for yourself. Besides, if there's no one there to see you, what's stopping you from finishing off your whole cake? You can work off the birthday cake weight later. Now, we understand that some of us simply cannot master the science of baking. If you don't know your castor sugar from your almond essence, order yourself a gourmet cake from Just Teddy Boulangerie & Pâtisserie. They are open and offering deliveries in level 4 lockdown, so you can celebrate in style without having to lift a finger in the kitchen.

Take Lots Of Pictures

How many pictures did your parents take of you on your birthday growing up? While you may look a little scraggly after weeks of unruly hair growth and a lack of sunshine, there is no reason why you can't snap a few good birthday selfies. Spoil yourself with a DIY pamper session on your birthday, making use of pantry staples to indulge in a few at-home beauty treatments. Once you've got yourself spruced up and ready for the camera, put on your party hat and smile away! If you'll be celebrating your birthday with family, rope them in, too. One day when COVID-19 is a thing of the past, you'll look back on these pictures with fond memories.

Make A Piñata!

What's more fun than raining candy? Think old school when planning your lockdown birthday and get busy crafting your very own paper mache piñata. It's a great way to pass the time and learn a fancy new skill. Plus, you'll be able to take your frustrations over being in lockdown on your birthday out on it. Fill your piñata with your favourite sweets or chocolates and have a good wack when it's time to celebrate. You will need a few basic items to create the piñata:

Follow these simple steps to create your piñata:

Step 1: Mix one part water with one part flour to create a paste.

Step 2 : Blow up a balloon and cut newspaper into strips.

Step 3: Dip newspaper strips into the paste, squeezing off excess paste. Apply to balloon.

Step 4: Repeat the third step, layering newspaper on until the balloon is covered by three to four layers. Leave an opening at the top for candy.

Step 5: Let dry for at least 24 hours. Then pop the balloon and decorate to your heart's content.

Running low on alcohol? Make a jug or two of tasty mocktails to enjoy on your birthday. While it may not be the same as sipping sundowners with your friends to bid farewell to the year that was, it's festive enough to put you in a good mood. Top off your glass with a cute mini umbrella and welcome in the new and improved (not older) you!

Zoom & Balloons

Zoom parties are all the rage at the moment. Jump on the bandwagon and invite your friends and family to join you for a birthday party from a distance. Decorate your bedroom or living space with balloons and streamers to set the mood. Or, gather together all your old birthday decorations and create a mish-mash theme for your online party. Make sure your entourage sings 'Happy Birthday' to you at least three times (they should be used to it by now!)

Happy birthday! We hope it's a good one.

Just Teddy

Just Teddy is a restaurant, eatery, bakery and patisserie that recently opened shop at Hyde Park Corner in Sandton. Offering a selection of exquisite confectionery and luxurious meals, this eatery serves decadence on a plate. Inspired by Parisian techniques and Middle Eastern flavours, the food at this establishment will delight any palate. Their focus is on attention to detail, a philosophy often lost in modern times. The dishes on offer pay tribute to Teddy's cultural heritage, as highlighted in the sublime flavours of the lavish delicacies on offer.

Just Teddy

Luxurious Meals

Just Teddy's menu offers a fine selection of sumptuous meals. Ranging from baked pastries to indulgent lunches, there is something to satisfy any craving. The options are scattered with French nuances and Lebanese flavours. Perhaps the most popular pick, the Hamburger Sûpreme is reminiscent of the Just Teddy ethos. 100% grass fed beef, mature cheddar, butter lettuce, pickles, heirloom tomato, wholegrain mustard mayonnaise and ketchup are all layered onto a 24k gold-plated black brioche bun. Burgers don't get much more opulent than this. This burger speaks volumes of the care, attention to detail and quality that goes into every item prepared at this eatery.

The Hamburger Sûpreme is just the tip of the grandiose iceberg. Other worthy menu items include the Plateau À Fromage, Fillet on Ciabatta, Fatoosh Salad and the various viennoiserie confections, freshly prepared daily. Tea lovers will weep at the dedicated tea menu, with more than 17 leaves on offer. Other drinks available include fine coffees, delicate wines and champagnes, gin and a great selection of gourmet milkshakes.

High Tea

Popularised during the 1700s, High Tea has become a favoured trend in recent years. With the delicate selection of sweet and savoury delights, we can see why. Just Teddy serves up their own version of this classic treat, which comes in three tiers. The top tier offers a selection of scones, rich chantilly cream and sweet jam. The middle tier pays homage to Teddy's Middle Eastern roots, with Labanese spinach pies, grilled halloumi, hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, tabbouleh and man'oushe bread with za'atar herbs. The bottom tier holds a selection of the tarts, cheesecakes, éclairs, cake, macarons, petit fours and cupcakes of the day.

Boulangerie and Pâtisserie

At its core, Just Teddy is a fine boulangerie and pâtisserie. To clarify, a boulangerie is a French bakery that specialises in bread, whereas a pâtisserie specialises in French pastries. This is an important distinction, as most bakeries in the city do not cater to both bread and pastry cravings. The fact that Teddy does supply both accentuates the baking talent that can be found at this eatery. Baked delights include the Berry Charlotte, Strawberry Swirl, Namoura, Madeleines, Frangipanis, Cheesecake, Mille Feuille, Gateaux and Isphan, to name a few. With all the decadence on offer, this is definitely not the place to be when you're watching your calorie intake!

Just Teddy is open daily from 7:00 to 19:00.
