The Whippet Has A New Home In Melville

We all know and love the Linden gem, The Whippet. It's just the spot to visit for that early morning caffeine fix, to catch up on a few pressing deadlines and even meet friends for a bite to eat. And just recently, they have spread the love and deliciousness of their good food and amazing coffee to the popular and trendy suburb of Melville. With a brand-new harvest store, they're set to offer guests only the freshest of delights, straight from their very own rooftop farm!

A Little Bit About Their New Harvest Store

Opening their doors to the public on 09 July 2019, their new harvest store - The Whippet in Melville - will offer visitors fresh produce harvested straight from their rooftop farm. The Whippet in Melville Harvest Store is just the beginning of their big dream to introduce a true farm-to-table experience to this bustling suburb, while also decreasing their carbon footprint. The Whippet is all about having a conscience, authenticity and a sense of community.

Melville visitors and customers will be able to purchase fresh herbs and vegetables from their harvest room. And to make your experience even better, they have also expanded their offering by introducing homemade korrelkonfyt, lemon cordial and grapefruit gin salt. Once the rooftop farm is grown and producing, it will supply both the Linden and Melville stores with fresh ingredients to create the dishes that are not only sustainable, but delicious.

The Art Of Their Design

The Whippet are not only passionate about coffee and good food, but also about design. This passion is what led them to an old art deco hotel, formerly known as the Melville Mansions on the corner of 7th Street and 3rd Avenue, which they now call their second home. Each of their shop designs are inspired by the surrounding neighbourhood’s history and heritage, falling in line with their love for Joburg and each unique suburb where they've laid down roots. The design of the Melville store was guided by a vision to use materials that are handmade, authentic, raw and honest to convey the humble concept of a harvest store: a space to experience honest, raw, fresh food in a space that reflects the same ‘goodness’.

The Whippet in Melville Harvest Store is about three times the size of the original Linden premises and also features a glass installation (plant wall), which showcases many handpicked cuttings from the Melville Koppies. The look and feel of this brand-new space was conceptualized by Kassa Studio.

Waiting For Nelson is finally making its way to Joburg Theatre this July. The play made its debut in 2014, and has since toured all over South Africa. It takes a good, hard look at where we are as a country 25 years into our democracy.

Set in post-Apartheid South Africa, 21 years after the first democratic elections, it follows a couple confronted by the issue of race. The play does not shy away from harsh human truths, including our complacency in 'the race issue'. Waiting For Nelson examines the idealistic notion of a 'rainbow nation' - a promise touted to South Africans throughout the turmoil of the 1994 elections. This production is a must-see for modern South African audiences, so get your tickets as soon as possible.

Written and directed by Mbasa Tsetsana, Waiting For Nelson won the award for Best Drama at the 2014 Youth Arts Festival. It then went on to be performed at The South African State Theatre as part of the annual Youth Arts Festival, as well as at The Market Laboratory, the 2015 ASSITEJ/IATA annual Youth Theatre and Dance Festival at Artscape. A two minute version of the show was also read at the 2017 National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
