Life Is Too Short For Plain Ice-Cream

Plain old ice-cream just isn't worth the extra time at the gym. That's why we have taken the time to compile this delicious list. Take your ice-cream from zero to hero by adding different toppings and treats. Just make sure your pantry is stocked up with all the best goodies to complement your midnight treat.

Add Some Fruit For That Extra Freshness

Adding some fruit to your frozen treat just gives it that extra kick of fresh goodness. You can mix things up by adding different fruit, from bananas and pineapples to berries and grapes. Not only is this simply delicious, it's also a much healthier treat, but who's counting calories anyway?

Are You Nuts About Ice Cream?

Add some crunch to your bite by throwing in some nuts. Stock up on your favourite nuts, whether plain or mixed, and get ready for a yummy indulgence. For this, you'll need to crush the nuts and sprinkle over your favourite ice-cream.

Sauce Things Up

Happiness is best served with chocolate sauce, and that's a fact. Get your fill of some good old chocolate sauce and bring some happiness to your life. And the best part is that this fix goes with any kind of ice-cream. But, there are plenty of other sauces you can play with if you're not on the chocolate bandwagon.

Without Some Cookies, Your Ice Cream Will Crumble

Who doesn't appreciate a cookie or two every now and again? Combine your favourite baked treat with your favourite icy snack and you're in for a real treat. Simply crush a generous amount of your favourite cookie and mix into your ice-cream. You can use any type of cookie for this, but our favourite has to be Oreos.

We Love Rum And Raisins

We love Rum and Raisin ice-cream. It's just better than all the other flavours! To make this flavour combo even better, soak some raisins in rum overnight and then add to your ice-cream. This is the perfect treat to indulge in after a long and tough day.

Ice Cream Milkshake With A Twist

Why not make your own milkshake? All you need to do is mix a generous amount of softened ice-cream with some chocolate sauce, milk and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. To add an extra kick, top off your milkshake with your favourite liqueur and it's time to party.

Do you have any tips for spicing up your ice-cream? Let us know about them in the comments section below!

The Maboneng Precinct is one of the trendiest and artistic precincts to have hit Jozi. Flourishing with authenticity and touches of our beautiful continent; this including our amazing people who make anyone feel welcome. Now that I'm done being my patriotic self, situated very close to Market on Main, is a different world that adds some spice to our unique South African character - Rooftop Salsa.

They are right above the Canteen, every Sunday. Rooftop Salsa has to be one of the most spoken-about spots on the precinct. The fact that it's on a rooftop makes it even more talk worthy.

Rooftop Salsa

Why You Have To Be There?

Well! I will start off by saying, google Kizomba. Not only does this place boast salsa, but there's a variety of dance genres like Kizomba, Zouk and more. You don't have to dress for a specific genre, but I can advise you to dress light, it can get quite heated after a dance or two.

I Don't Know How To Dance - You Don't Have To

Let me break it down to you step by step as to how it works...

Simple enough right?

The Best Thing...

When you enter the complex, you definitely won't miss the awesome, sexy tunes playing. They have an amazing DJ who is always serving some of that realness. You will be inspired to add Cuban Dance Music to your next listening session.

Whether you are there for the drinks or the dancing, it's just absolutely great entertainment. You can be part of the experience or watch a mixture of Angola and Puerto Rico come together while seeing the dramatic views of the creativity that happens at Maboneng.

Rooftop Salsa

You can take a friend or partner to the Rooftop Salsa, it's that type of experience. The vibe is also one of the most electric vibes I've experienced to date - the people are great, warm and just filled with good vibes. Just an FYI for ladies who want a girls' time out; the guys who offer you a hand are gentlemen so you have nothing to worry about at all.

One thing that puzzles everyone is that the whole dance experience is free. You will also find some of the Dance Spirit SA team there - they travel around different spots in Joburg to share this dance culture and providing dance classes, you can check out their pages regarding prices as well as venue.

What Is It?

Explore the Joburg Literary District between Fox and Albertina Sisulu Streets with Jozi Walks while Griffin Shea guides you through the beautiful city.

A great perk, there is safe parking at the Reef Hotel for just R30 so you can enjoy your walking tour with peace of mind. Plus the tour is absolutely free so there is no excuse to miss it

Sunsets

Randlords — Braamfontein

Okay, so this spot isn’t always open to the public as it is one of the most exclusive venues in the city, but when they host parties on the 22nd floor of the Randlords venue, you better ensure you’re there! You will be perched on the highest point in Braamfontein, and get a complete 360 degree panoramic view of the City of Gold that stretches from the magnificent FNB Stadium and bustling Soweto to the Sandton Skyline.

Find more information here.

Northcliff Water Tower — Northcliff

All the best things in life tend to be free, hence my reason for mentioning the Northcliff Water Tower as one of the best sunset spots in Joburg. I say this because I have experienced it firsthand. One of my ex-boyfriends decided to spoil me with a romantic picnic for two at this spot, and I must say it is by far one of my fondest memories! The sunset from this spot definitely set the perfect backdrop to a romantic evening. So, if you are looking for an ideal date idea that will not break the bank, then pack a picnic basket with tasty goodies and some good wine, find a comfy blanket, head to Lucky Avenue in Northcliff and set up at the Northcliff Water Tower.

Directions: From Beyers Naude Drive, turn left onto Frederick Drive. Left onto Hearn Drive, which will lead into Rockey Drive. Then turn right into Louie Avenue, and right again into Lucky Avenue.

Roots Restaurant at Forum Homini — Kromdraai

After a long day of taking in all the sights that the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein have to offer, why not sit back and relax out on the deck at Forum Homini’s Roots Restaurant? Wind down while sipping on a glass of wine as the sun sets over the surrounding dam and veld. The restaurant offers a truly stunning African sunset. And, once the sun has gone down, head inside for a divine dinner to round off your day on a high note (be sure to book beforehand, as booking is essential).

Find more information here.

Skye Bar — Sandown

Whether you are looking for a relaxing spot to wait out the traffic or a great spot for a stunning sunset and pre-party drinks to get your night started, the Skye Bar offers an elegant space just for that. This spot can be rather pricey when it comes to their cocktails, so ensure you visit it for a special occasion or if you are looking to spoil yourself! I think taking in the panoramic views of Sandton while sipping on a refreshing Honey Sling (Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey shaken cold with vanilla extract, pineapple juice, charged with soda water) sounds like the perfect way to start an evening out with the girls!

Find more information here.

The Island Bar — Southern Sun Hyde Park

Grab a cocktail, sit out on the pool deck and take in the glorious Highveld sunsets from the Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park. This happens to be one of the most popular and happening places to be over weekends, as the vibe is busy and buzzing on Friday and Saturday nights. Their cocktails are superbly refreshing, perfect for spring and summer nights, and the sunset views from this venue are one of the best in the city.

Find more information here.

The San Deck – Sandton

The San Deck Sandton is another great option if you're chasing a majestic Joburg sunset. This is yet another Sandton favourite if you are looking to sit back, lounge around on the comfy, luxurious couches and sip on a sundowner while watching the sun go down over the Sandton CBD skyline. On colder nights, they have three large fire pits that will set the ambience and keep you warm while you take in all of that the city lights have to offer once the sun has gone down.

Find more information here.

The Living Room — Maboneng

Reconnect with nature at The Living Room in the heart of Joburg! This rooftop venue offers urban-eco café cuisine, plant art and urban design. It also has a showroom for green design and lifestyle. On Sunday afternoons they host fantastic live entertainment to end off your weekend on a chilled note, and best of all, you get the opportunity to check out the stunning views of the Maboneng Precinct as the sun goes down over the city.

Find more information here.

Top of Africa — Joburg CBD

Head to the very top of the 50-storey Carlton Centre and take in a stunning 360-degree view of the city from one of the highest points in Joburg. From the observatory deck, you can see the whole of Joburg, from the FNB Stadium and Soweto in the south-west, Braamfontein and Hillbrow directly north, to Gandhi Square to the west. Take in this stunning sunset which literally turns Joburg into the City of Gold. There is also a bar and coffee shop at the very top!

Find more information here.

The Beach - Rivonia

No need to take the tedious six-hour journey down to the coast just to enjoy a beautiful sunset on the beach along with your favourite cocktail! The Beach has finally come to Rivonia, offering a rooftop beach right in the heart of Joburg! This stunning venue has some of the very best sunsets over the city, and is fully equipped with a full bar with amazing cocktails, gourmet hot dogs and finger platters, and live entertainment!

Higher Ground — Bryanston

On the stunning grounds of the St Stithians College, Higher Ground Restaurant is the perfect spot if you are looking to sit back and enjoy the stunning views of the city while indulging in fabulous cocktails and delicious food. Great Dane

Great Dane in Braam is a fab place to squeeze in a little dance session. It’s a casual spot that has differently themed parties on different nights of the week, so just check out what’s going down before you head over there – either way, you’re in for a party! Hint: they serve great gourmet hot dogs, so don't leave until you've tried one.

Where: 5 De Beer Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Kitcheners

Kitcheners is right next door to Great Dane and is one of the oldest bars in the city. It’s super-casual but still manages to keep its trendy edge. Like Great Dane, different parties happen here on different nights, so it’s a mixed bag of jams. They also host live bands occasionally, so be sure to check ahead to see what’s happening… or just arrive and be pleasantly surprised.

Where: 6 De Beer Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Hell's Kitchen

Melville’s Hell’s Kitchen is an alternative haven for those who are into the rockabilly vibe. Firstly, the décor here is out of this world and, secondly, the music is always amazing – they usually play rock but nothing too heavy! While they don’t have a designated dance floor, people do tend to move the tables out the way and create a makeshift one. Hint: look out for the secret room behind the bookshelf and don’t leave without a shot or two of Hellfire Cinnamon Whisky.

Where: Shop 4, 7th Street, Melville, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Truth

Truth used to be a snake park back in the day but has since been transformed into a super-club that pumps electronic music every Friday and Saturday night. Parties here can go on into the wee hours of the morning and you’re more than likely to leave only once the sun has risen. There are various dance floors in Truth where different types of EDM are played. They also often host international DJs and producers!

Where: Old Pretoria Road, Midrand, Johanneburg.

For more information, click here.

Carfax

Carfax is another super-club in Joburg that hosts all kinds of parties: live bands, DJs, drum ’n bass events and more. Check out their lineup before you go and just remember that it's not really a "walk in" kind of place... they’re only open when they’re hosting an event (most Friday and Saturday nights). It’s a grungy-in-a-good-way kind of spot and know that their street parties can get out of hand (in the best way, of course).

Where: 39a Gwi Gwi Mrwebi Street, Newtown, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

And

And is an underground EDM club that hosts regular party nights. Thursdays are for Addictshun, which is their drum ’n bass night and Fridays are for Toy Toy, their weekly techno residency. Both parties pump like you have no idea. They do host other kinds of parties on occasion, so check out their lineup to stay in the loop. We should probably tell you that this is another one of those places that can suck you in and spit you out only after the sun has risen... it’s great!

Where: 39a Gwi Gwi Mrwebi Street, Newtown, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Rumours Lounge

Rumours Lounge used to be in Weltevreden Park but has since moved into the old Standard Bank Building across the road from Cresta. It's a haven for live music lovers and bar-goers alike. All kinds of gigs go down here – on any given night you’re bound to catch a rad local band taking to the stage or an international one blowing it up. Have a look at their lineup if there’s a specific act you’d like to see, or just rock up and go with the flow.

Where: Valley Ln, Blackheath, Randburg, 2118

For more information, click here.

Jo'Anna Melt Bar

Jo’Anna Melt Bar is a Melville-based place that has a jukebox, which means that if you want to hear your chosen tracks, you’d better get there early! It’s a great place to dance, drink and just have an awesome time. They also serve up melted cheese in every shape and form imaginable – should you get a late night craving for something cheesy.

Where: 7 7th Street, Melville, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Artivist

This is the vibe you're looking for where art meets food, meets bar, meets an overall fun time. This is also one of the chillest, mature and upmarket venues with good food and cocktails on the menu, that appeals to the neighbourhood's post-student and of course the young professional crowd. If you haven't been yet make sure you pay them a visit. We might bump into you. This is one of our favourite places.
