Northcliff Water Tower — Northcliff

All the best things in life tend to be free, hence my reason for mentioning the Northcliff Water Tower as one of the best sunset spots in Joburg. I say this because I have experienced it firsthand. One of my ex-boyfriends decided to spoil me with a romantic picnic for two at this spot, and I must say it is by far one of my fondest memories! The sunset from this spot definitely set the perfect backdrop to a romantic evening. So, if you are looking for an ideal date idea that will not break the bank, then pack a picnic basket with tasty goodies and some good wine, find a comfy blanket, head to Lucky Avenue in Northcliff and set up at the Northcliff Water Tower.

Roots Restaurant at Forum Homini — Kromdraai

After a long day of taking in all the sights that the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein have to offer, why not sit back and relax out on the deck at Forum Homini’s Roots Restaurant? Wind down while sipping on a glass of wine as the sun sets over the surrounding dam and veld. The restaurant offers a truly stunning African sunset. We Know How to Hustle.

Just because you don’t have a job doesn’t mean your bank balance becomes stagnant. From wheeling and dealing photocopiers and water coolers on the side to writing articles as a freelancer, Joburgers know how to make money – that’s what the city’s built on, right?

Have you ever been on holiday in the Eastern Cape and every single person on the road has never made use of their car’s third gear? Yup. That’s us, right. Just because the speed limit is 40 doesn’t mean we have to stick to it, right? Life is happening and ya’ll need to move, move, move.

We Think Everyone Inside of Joburg Drive too Fast.

Joburg is filled with a bunch of maniacs on the road. Just because the speed limit is 80 doesn’t mean you have to drive 220. But it’s okay if we do it because we really need to get to the pub...

We Know How to Drink – But is That a Good Thing?

Phuza Thursday was born in Joburg. That much is a fact. The working class in this town only need half an excuse to go out and drink. Oh it’s karaoke night? Let’s go have a drink! Oh, You’ve had a bad day at the office! Let’s go have a drink. As fun as it may seem to sing Celine Dion at the top of your lungs whilst under the influence every Thursday for the past eight years kind of boils down to, you having a problem... besides, they call us JOLburgers for a reason.

If ever you get a craving for a juicy prego roll and some sweet lemonade to wash it down with (a very specific craving, yes, but a real one if you’re like us), Post is the place to go. That’s not all their menu boasts though – you can’t really go wrong here. Whether you order the salmon on rye or the flapjacks served with bacon, honey, yoghurt and fruit, you’ll walk out feeling full, happy and ready for a shopping spree or nap (depends on what you order, really).

Address: 70 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Thrift store by day, party haven by night, Kitcheners wears more than one hat, that’s for sure. If you stroll inside on a Saturday, you’ll find all kinds of gems – from vintage clothes and bags to shoes and accessories. Shopping with a drink in hand? Yes, please. Plus, it’s one of the oldest bars in Joburg!

Address: Corner Juta and De Beer Streets, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Great Dane

Right next-door to Kitcheners is Great Dane, a fab party bar by night, hotdog hotspot by day. Their parties go on until the wee hours of the morning  and for good reason. They sure know how to throw them. Like Kitcheners, Great Dane’s parties vary so just be sure to check out what’s happening before you go. Or don’t – it might be more fun that way!

The Wits Art Museum, otherwise known as WAM, is a great place   not only to admire some art but also to grab a bite to eat. They’re home to Olives and Plates where you can get an assortment of sandwiches, wraps, saucy roasted chicken, roasted veggie salads, cakes and other sweet treats. Fuel up and take a look at the art on display. WAM’s home to a collection of African art and also hosts a range of exhibitions.

Father Coffee

Okay, this is a bold statement, but it’s quite possible that Father makes one of the best coffees in town. We do not say this lightly. In fact, we consider ourselves to be quite the coffee snobs, so if you’ve yet to try it, do so and then try and argue! There are limited seats inside so it’s best to grab a takeaway coffee and walk around Braam while you sip on whatever you’ve ordered (a flat white for us, please).

Address: 73 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

craft coffee

Doubleshot Coffee is a great coffee spot that also serves up a wide range of teas. Their food offerings are fab, too. Sit and chow down on coconut French toast, shakshouka, and smoked trout cottage pie! And wash your meal away with a craft iced tea, why don’t you?

Address: Corner of Juta and Melle Street, Braamfontein, Inner City, Johannesburg.

Bannister Hotel

The Bannister Hotel has a fab vibe to it if you pop in for a drink and a bit of a dance   depending on which night you go, of course. Things pick up on Thursday nights (especially First Thursdays, when Braamfontein really comes to life after dark on the first Thursday of every month). Pull up a chair at the bar and who knows, you might even catch a live act while you’re there.

Address: 9 de Beer Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Velo makes a mean sandwich. Their gourmet versions, in particular, are oh-so-tasty, but if you feel like a good ol’ fashioned toasted chicken mayo sarmie (sometimes that’s all you need), you can get that here, too. Velo doubles as a bar so order a cocktail with lunch (no judgement here) and you’re good to go.

Address: Corner Melle and Juta Streets, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Some people have a fascination with cigars, and yes, I am one of them. In America, over 3.8 billion cigars are smoked annually, however, back in South Africa, they aren't often available in stores or clubs. The younger market is also the least likely to be seen smoking them. But, if you're part of the niche few who enjoys a deep puff or two, here's where you can find them around town...

The Cigar Club

You can’t smoke cigars without buying some first. We've found that the best place to get good imported cigars at the best prices is at The Cigar Club. They require you to register as a club member before making a purchase, but membership is FREE, so don't stress. Tip: take a look at their offerings carefully because they have special packages worked out for weddings or sample packs of the five top-rated cigars etc. These packages are also cool because you save a bit off a regular purchase… and that’s always good.

Katzy's Rosebank

Katzy’s is a five-star experience as far as bars and lounges go. They specialise in live jazz with that wall to wall leather and wood look, expensive whiskeys and of course smoking stoggies. They have a range of cigars on hand to add to your eventful night out.

Cubana, as the name so implies, is a Cuban themed venue where you can buy cigars, kick back and relax in a faux Cuban type environment. Their claim to fame is that they are singularly the biggest cigar traders in South Africa with all the Cuban and Dominican cigars a connoisseur might want. They also boast their own brand of cigars which is apparently quite pleasing.

Chevy Lane

While this 1950's retro dinner functions mainly as a family restaurant, there are a few secret treasures to behold here too. With an open balcony and a dedicated whisky and cigar bar, Chevy Lane offers you vintage-inspired sophistication. Completely separate from the kids play area, this is the ideal place to blow off some steam (literally).

Churchill's Bar

Churchill's Bar is styled to look just like an upmarket British gentleman's club, which means it had to include a special place to smoke a cigar or two. Choose from an impressive selection of cigars on offer and pair it with an even more impressive choice of whiskies. All that's missing is a smoking jacket and a pair of loafers.

The Polo Bar at the Four Seasons Westcliff Hotel

The Polo Bar boasts a stylish colonial setting with a polo based design giving it a very regal feel. The view from the bar is spectacular and is a perfect spot to light up, chat or reflect on the busy week that was. A little later, it's worth digging into one of their delicious cocktails and possibly lighting another stoggie… what could be better?

Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park

For delicious cocktails, a fun vibe, and great music with a classic and elegant feel, pay a visit to Island Bar at Southern Sun Hyde Park ... it's the perfect spot for after work socialising with colleagues and friends. Grab a cocktail and dig into a light meal while watching the Highveld sunset from their rooftop pool deck. Sundowners with a stunning view of the city? It can't get any better than that!

Jolly Cool, Parkhurst

This one has been around for many years and to this day, it's still one of the coolest hangouts in Parkhurst. Head through to Jolly Cool to play a few rounds of pool, grab a bite to eat, hang out with your mates, have a few drinks to unwind, and have a jolly good time. This popular hangout is the place to be after 17:00, so make sure you arrive early (finding parking can be a nightmare). With reasonably priced food and drinks, this is the best way to chill out. Don't leave without grabbing one of their pizzas!

Jolly Roger Restaurant & Pub

Directly across from Jolly Cool is the Jolly Roger Restaurant & Pub. From the moment you walk into this one, you instantly get the feeling of a traditional British pub. It's crowded, rather loud and can be smokey but the vibe is homey and friendly. Along with the warm atmosphere, there's also beer on tap, delicious pub food and friendly service.

After Work Drinks

SIX Cocktail Bar

This stylish and upbeat little spot is a gem in the Melville precinct. It gives you great music, a social environment, drinks, a choice of 60 different cocktails and meals (in case you get a little hungry with all that drinking) all rolled up into one trendy, exciting and interesting venue. Happy Hour lasts for seven hours, from 12:00 until 19:00 daily (yes, EVERY DAY!), and during this extended hour you can enjoy their special of two-for-the-price-of-one cocktails. Go easy on the Long Island Ice Tea though, two of those and you'll be under the table if you're a lightweight.

Billy the B.U.M's, Fourways

This one is an oldie but a goodie! Billy’s is a bar/cocktail lounge that caters for a more mature scene. With a variety of over 60 different cocktails and mixed drinks, good food and awesome tunes, this is the ideal spot to wind down the week. Sit and chill in the seated areas and socialise with friends or, if you feel like busting a move, there is a DJ playing the latest music - feel free to make requests if you want to dance to your favourite tunes (there's always a great 80s track in the line-up).

After Work Drinks

The Baron

Everybody knows The Baron! And luckily, this one can be found all over the city. There's one in Bedfordview, Kyalami, Fourways, Bryanston, Sandown and Woodmead, so take your pick, call up your mates and head down to the bar for a cold one (you can find us at the Sandown and Fourways venues more often than not). You can expect a good atmosphere, outstanding service, vintage wines, interesting cocktails and good food. What's nice about this place is the fact that you can visit as a family for a good meal or for a night out on the town. It's versatile, relaxed and easy-going. Also, it's a FREE WiFi spot!

011 Dainfern

Brought to you by The Baron, 011 Dainfern is an upmarket hotspots offering a lovely setting to relax after your hectic day of meetings, deadlines, presentations, fussy clients and millions of emails. Order a martini just the way you like it, tuck into something delicious from their menu (we love the sound of the lamb curry, especially if it's a little chilly outside) and be a little daring by trying out one or two of their refreshing and interesting cocktails.

Hogshead is a great hangout if you're in the mood for grabbing a few drinks and meeting up with your mates. It's one of the more popular restaurant/pubs in the city and offers everything from beer and burgers to a bar and even a kid-friendly section if you're visiting with the family. To help you relax, you can catch various sporting events on their TVs or make use use of their Wi-Fi to update your Facebook check-in or Instagram or even finish some last minute work (if you have to).

After Work Drinks

The Radium Beer Hall

Enjoy a night on the town in one of Joburg’s oldest bars. Expect live performances by local musicians and song writers, check out the new talent on the music scene, have a drink at famous Barman Larry’s Savannah Dry bar; and enjoy a great meal. With walls covered in old memorabilia, posters from ‘back in the day’ and newspaper clippings that have recorded the Radium Beerhall’s history, this bar definitely does give off the vintage vibe.

Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen is a rockabilly-themed bar in the heart of Melville. It's got amazing décor that's sure to catch your eye from the minute you set foot inside! Their food is very tasty and is best washed down with their signature Hellfire Whisky! Perch yourself on one of the comfy leather couches and wind down while you listen to their awesome lineup of rock music. Let the mayhem begin!

After Work Drinks

Social On Main

If it's cocktails you want, it's cocktails you'll at Social On Main. Their cocktail menu is amazing and comprehensive, it has something for all tastes and palates, and the food.... so delicious! This one is a must if you find yourself in Bryanston.

Piccolo Mondo

The Michelangelo Hotel is by far one of the most iconic hotels in South Africa. It's fitting then that its restaurant be categorised as fine dining as well. The Piccolo Mondo is one of our favourite places to spoil our taste buds at. In fact, we go there so often that we shot this little video inside the Piccolo Mondo kitchen. Drawing from a classic Italian theme, the menu combines a range of traditional dishes that, under the watchful eye of executive chef Andrew and his team, have been given a modern twist.
