Tsogo Sun Hotels is venturing into a new space with a uniquely different hotel brand – hi Hotels. Designed to continue delivering on the group’s promise of creating great experiences, this new brand is young, authentic and modern.
Tim de Raedt, hi Hotels’ Director of Operations, says, “There is a segment of the market that is looking for an affordable, comfortable and well-designed space to stay, rather than a hotel with all the bells and whistles. They want convenience and some creature comforts, and a base from which they can explore the city, go about their business and enjoy what the neighbourhood has to offer. hi Hotels provides all that, and we’re excited to be incorporating it into the Tsogo Sun Hotels portfolio.”
The hi Hotels brand is positioned in the select service category, offering room rates at below R1 000. The rooms have luxurious walk-in showers, big windows, blackout curtains, coffee and tea stations, laptop-sized safes, USB ports and 48-inch TVs. The ‘living lobby’ provides space to work and play, and a convenient deli offering for a quick snack or coffee on the run.
Technology is an important element for hi Hotels. It'll be the first hotel within the Tsogo Sun Hotels stable to offer online and self-check-in facilities. The hotel’s TV system will allow guests to cast their own content to their room TV in a simple process of connecting to the free uncapped high speed WiFi, scanning a QR code and opening the app of their choice.
The first hi Hotel is opening at Montecasino in Johannesburg by late January 2020 with 123 bedrooms (46 double doubles and 77 queens) that are modern, uncluttered and comfortable. The hotel offers easy access to the many varied restaurants, bars, theatres, shops, conference and event venues, and other entertainment options at Montecasino.
The hotel is located less than 100 metres away from the outdoor piazza. “The location is a good example of what we are looking for in future hi Hotels sites. For the concept to work, we need sites that have a variety of restaurants within walking distance and centrally located near to an entertainment or corporate node.
“We’re proud to be breaking new ground with this fresh brand – and we look forward to introducing people to the hi Hotels offering,” says De Raedt.

Veganuary started in 2014 as a way to encourage and aid people in joining the vegan lifestyle for the month of January. This non-profit organisation supports those seeking a healthier diet in a way that prevents animal suffering, protects the environment and improves overall health. Veganuary aims to inspire people to try the vegan diet for 31 days during the month of January. To make this easier, they work closely with supermarkets and restaurants to ensure a wide selection of easily available, tasty, delicious and nutritious vegan items.
After the lavish holiday festivities filled with indulgent food, drink and celebrations, there is no better time to switch to a healthier lifestyle. Not only will Veganuary help you get back into shape, but it can also help you explore the tantalising world of vegan delicacies with their helpful blogs, a handy eating guide with a list of vegan friendly restaurants and shops and tasty recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts. These include recipes for apple cinnamon waffles, breakfast pizza, crunchy zucchini fries, decadent truffles, carrot cake bites and thick and creamy freak shakes. Not only are these dishes a healthier alternative, but they are flavoursome and indulgent too.
Veganuary has a range of helpful hints and tips, simple switches, quick meals and healthy food on the go to make your 31 day challenge a breeze. They have also compiled a list of restaurants and eateries serving up vegan meals. Some of these include Spur, Col'cacchio, Hudsons The Burger Joint, Lexi's Healthy Eatery and The Fussy Vegan. These are just a few of the many restaurants in the city offering mouthwatering vegan cuisine. If you prefer to have your meals at home until pay day, then check out the diverse vegan ranges at your local supermarket or head out to your closest vegan food store for all your grocery needs.
Other than signing up to join Veganuary, you can also contribute to this initiative by making a small single or monthly donation, by sharing your story on social media and by helping others go vegan. Corporate businesses can also take part by joining forces with Veganuary. This is a great way to advertise your vegan products and services.

Have you done an art tour of Joburg yet? No? Well, then Now is your chance! Johannesburg is home to some iconic galleries, not to mention a barrage of modern, niche spaces and they all host the most thought-provoking and inspirational local art.
Galleries are spread throughout the city but I suggest doing one of the ‘art routes’, as they are now being called. My favourite is the Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank which boasts a bunch of the best galleries, and they are all within close proximity to each other. Start at Circa on Jellicoe and make your way through Speke, SMAC, Southern Guild and WHATIFTHEWORLD.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with the Park Runs, they are 5km routes which take place in the most stunning parks and are open to all to enjoy. But you might be wondering how this is different to you just running around the block a few times? Well, the Park Runs are firstly stunning considering they take place in some of Joburg’s best parks (Delta Park, Modderfontein Park, etc) but also make for a lot of fun because the whole community gets involved. Both walkers and runners are welcome! Click here to find out more and to register for free!#
Markets are great when you’re trying to work to a budget because unlike a restaurant, you don’t have to eat a meal to relax and take in the atmosphere. You can enjoy a day filled with plenty of entertainment for the kids, relaxing seating areas in the shade, some good food and a fantastic vibe. And best of all, some markets have no entrance fee, so you can walk in and suss out everything for FREE. You could wander the market, grab a drink, let the kids mission around and you’d likely spend under R100 for the whole afternoon. Visit the Modderfontein Farmers' Market that takes place every first and last Saturday of the month (27 January 2018 is the next one!), it has plenty of fun for the whole family.
People think Joburg is all cement and urban jungle but the opposite is actually true. Joburg is home to an abundance of parks. It seems that the Joburg municipality always placed a strong emphasis on keeping the city green and it has paid off in the form of well-kept and luscious parks. There is a park in almost every area so you have no excuse! Take your pick from James and Ethel Gray Park in Melrose, George Lea Park in Sandton, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens (there s an entrance fee here), Modderfontein Reserve (small charge to get into this one), Delta Park in the Blairgowrie area and Gillooly's Farm in Bedfordview. So, pack some picnic goodies, get the friends and family together and head down to your local park for a day of old-fashioned fun on a budget.
And while you're out and about in nature, why not take a hike? Not only is it a great way to kickstart burning off those extra kilos gained over the festive season, but it's also not too heavy on your wallet. You can head to Melville Koppies for a day of walking and gently climbing in sectors East and West, or book your spot for a guided hiking tour through the Central sector. It's child-friendly, cheap and safe. You can also go to Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and hike through a variety of trails and check out the eagles that take up residence near the waterfall.
When was the last time you explored the city like a tourist? If you can't remember, then make sure you take a day or two enjoying the sights and points of interest of Johannesburg with City Sightseeing Tours. Sure, it will cost you a little under R200 for the day, but it is totally worth it considering you'll be hopping on and off an open-top red bus to see and explore the city's top 20 attractions. It's a must! A few attractions on the list include the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and SAB World of Beer, just to name a few.
If there's one thing you need to blow your last hundred-and-something bucks on, it's a fun jumping session at BOUNCE Inc! And trust us, this isn't just fun that for the young ones. Spend a few hours bumping from trampoline to trampoline, slam-dunking, dodgeballing, climbing, flipping and flopping. It's great exercise, an awesome idea if you're looking to hang out with friends who are also on a budget, and loads of fun! Make sure you book your session, you can even do so online at Bounce Inc. General admission is R100* for junior jumper and student sessions and R125* per adult.
