Col'cacchio

This pizza and pasta joint has several locations all over Joburg. Which is great, because then we can grab some of their yummy food no matter where we are. They have several vegan pizza options, such as the Margherita, Lazio and Cosi Verde. We love the Lazio with avocado, cherry tomatoes and pumpkin seed pesto. But all of these pizzas are delicious in their own right.

Smack Pizza Co, Rivonia

This pizza shop just popped up out of nowhere and suddenly, it's the pizza place on everyone's lips. And we are loving it. They don't have a huge selection, but what they do offer is just right. Try a vegan pizza topped with vegan cheese, beetroot, avo, tomatoes, onions and olives. Not only is this delicious, but all the fresh ingredients also make it healthy... well, sort of.

Doppio Zero

We love the vegan range at Doppio Zero, featuring delectable bowls, wraps, burgers, curries and pasta. But have you tried their vegan pizza? If not, you should. This pizza is loaded with Napoletana sauce, vegan cheese, basil, artichokes, roasted red pepper, olives and rocket. If that isn't enough to satiate your appetite, top off your pizza with your choice of extra toppings. With everything from broccoli to pineapple, there's something for everyone.

Andiccio 24

This fast food shop has popped up just about everywhere in recent years. And we aren't complaining. They offer some of the best fast food pizzas and pastas available from a takeaway joint. These include tasty vegan options. The Vegherita is basically a vegan Margherita. If you'd like more ingredients on your pizza, they have a wide array of extra toppings. We like the sound of roasted garlic, avo and caramelised onions.

Lupa Osteria

While this isn't strictly a fine dining restaurant, it's the closest on this list. This Italian restaurant serves some of the best Italian fare in Joburg. And, they have an entire vegan menu, an oddity for a cheese and meat loving Italian eatery. But we won't complain. Their vegan menu offers up the Yoga Bunny Pizza with Napoletana sauce, vegan mozzarella, roasted butternut, Peppadews, vegan basil pesto, avocado and rocket.

Nexdor

Known for its pub grub and exciting atmosphere, Nexdor is one of the places that should be penned into the top of your culinary bucket list when visiting restaurants in Soweto. The name, proposed during a fun night at Sakhumzi Restaurant, comes from the fusion of two words 'next' and 'door' and is written in this fashion to reflect colloquially a local and/or nearby destination in 'kasi' speak. On the menu, visitors will find options such as ribs, burgers, and steaks to name a few.

Street Food

Ntsitsi's Fun Food

Situated in Diepmeadow, Ntsitsi's Fun Food is the kind of street stall you would find in an episode of a Netflix food travel show. One of our favourite restaurants in Soweto, Ntsitsi's menu is filled with real South African street food, and is home to the legendary kota. Not too sure what a kota is? Well, let's educate you! "Kota" is an approximation of the word "quarter," for the quarter of the loaf of bread that is the base of the sandwich. The bread is hollowed out, filled first with a layer of seasoned french fries, then topped with optional layers of sauce, cheese, egg, and meat.

Let's explore a bit of Johannesburg and find the best pizza around, where you can have a good slice or two (or maybe eight).

Our favourite: the James Brown.

Licking Our Fingers

Now is the time to indulge in all the delicious pizza that awaits us. Grab some friends and head out on that pizza hop.

To start off, I should mention that I was at Jamie's Italian because I managed to score some vouchers after having won a competition. I was advised by my fellow colleagues to keep the voucher for myself but elected to take my partner along instead. And, being the commoners we are, we completely forgot that a stylish place like Jamie's probably requires a reservation. We managed to get a last minute booking and two hours later, we were exploring the British Italian flare.

Date Night

Jamie's is hidden down a cobble-bricked street in Melrose Boulevard, it can be easy to miss with nothing but the glass paneled doors, wooden nuances and a simplistic blue sign to indicate it is even there. This is a good indication of their food and service. Simplistic - but done well. At the time, the Melrose Arch Christmas lights were shining in all their glory, setting the scene of glamour and enchantment. Almost as soon as we stepped over the threshold of the restaurant, we were ushered upstairs and given a comfortable booth to be our spot for the evening. Our seating were in the corner or the room that had a substantial window, giving us a great view of the twinkling lights.

We ordered uncomplicated Americanos for drinks. As is, our coffees were excellent, a perfectly dark cup of liquid magic. We decided that we were going to splurge, as much as our stomach would allow, and went for starters, mains and dessert. We ordered our starters and while we waited, we poked fun at the descriptions of wine on the menu that can only be described as odd.

wine

For starters we had the Italian Nachos. No, this is not Mexican food served at an Italian restaurant started by a British guy (that's a mouthful!). This was delightfully crispy triple cheese stuffed ravioli, deep-fried and served with a side of spicy tomato sauce.

Ravioli

For mains, we tried the creamy Carbonara with salty bacon bits. We also tried the Ravioli Mezzaluna, which is a fancy way of saying spinach and ricotta packed into crescent shaped pasta. These were served in a tomato sauce with blobs of mozzarella and basil, drizzled with olive oil. I have never had cooking, especially not tomatoes, that has been salted enough, except perhaps my own. This was the first time that I did not have to reach for those salt crystals. Now, hearing that food is perfectly salty from someone who would salt a marmite sandwich doesn't sound that great. But keep in mind that my partner in crime, who doesn't like salt at all, also loved it.

Cabonara

We were too full to order separate desserts and opted for the Molten Praline Pudding. A dark and luscious chocolate cake with a runny centre, served with caramel ice cream and praline. It was a good thing we decided to share as this was so rich. The ice cream was just sweet enough to cut that bitter dark chocolate and the praline added some crunchiness to all the smooth textures.

This lovely dinner for two was finished off with a leisurely stroll through the light display.

Lupa Osteria

This Italian eatery has their own vegan menu which includes pizza, desserts and pasta. Their house made spaghetti is made without egg, making it perfectly vegan. You can dress this pasta with the Loula; tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, basil and garlic. Or you can choose to build your own pasta, selecting from a choice of ingredients such as caramelised onions, roasted peppers, olives, artichokes, mushrooms and aubergines, all rounded off with Napoli Sauce. We wouldn't say no to Rosemary Focaccia, with roasted pepper and olive spaghetti in a tangy and sweet tomato sauce, finished off with Mixed Berry Sorbet.

Doppio Zero

Doppio Zero has become the coffee shop of choice for vegans across Joburg. This is simply because of their wide range of vegan choices that are amazingly delicious. One such choice is the Vegano Fettuccine, luscious strands of fettuccine lightly tossed with mushrooms, baby marrows, red onion, coconut milk, garlic, chilli and spicy chimichurri. This is beautifully complemented with a Cappuccino Vero, an Italian styled cappuccino, perfectly rich and bitter after a warm and hearty meal.

Col'cacchio

Col'cacchio is an Italian restaurant that has become a go-to for vegans craving Italian fare in recent years. This is because they offer delicious vegan salads, pizzas and pastas. They have two vegan pasta options on their menu, these are the Pomodoro, a simple basil and tomato pasta. But often, simple is best. The other vegan option is the sought-after Spaghetti and Vegballs, vegan 'meatballs' with the Pomodoro sauce and vegan Parmesan.

The Fussy Vegan

This eatery is a hidden gem tucked away behind a fuel station in Blairgowrie. They have become the popular choice for their amazing freshly prepared food, pre-packed food and vegan snacks. We love going there just for a bottle of Almond Creamery and a loaded smores doughnut. But if you're in the mood for something a little more filling and much more hearty, they make some of the best Mac and Cheese, wheat pasta in cashew cheese sauce with seitan bacon bits. And better yet, they serve this in a burrito. That's right, a macaroni and cheese burrito. Can you think of anything more glutenous yet completely worth it? We can't.

Free Food

Free Food is a vegan restaurant and supplier based in Melrose. They offer two vegan pasta choices. These two options consist of the Free Ball Tomato Pasta, vermicelli and 'meat balls' in a tomato, onion and thyme sauce with kalamata olives and almonds loaded on fresh greens. There is also the Pesto Pasta, vermicelli with mushrooms, tomatoes and kalamata olives brought together with basil pesto, also with fresh greens and chopped almonds. We love the fresh and healthy take on pasta at this eatery.

The Greenside Cafe

Greenside Cafe focuses on healthy, green eating. Green as in environmentally-friendly, not broccoli. This restaurant has the widest range of vegan pasta of all the places on this list. Their pasta choices include spaghetti, chewy tofu ribbons and gluten free. These pastas can be paired with Bolognaise, Vegan Pesto, Italian and Algerian sauces. No matter your choice, we recommend rounding off your meal with a slice of the Raw Maple Cheesecake.

Let me start by saying that Luigi's is not my idea of a fancy or romantic restaurant. Rather, it is something in between a classic Italian restaurant and your local cosy coffee shop. Sure, romantic restaurants may offer patrons five plates of burnt leaves with a drizzle of butternut puree, with subtle hints of french banana peel that only grows in a volcanic region of wherever. But Luigi's serves real food. Real food in real portions with real flavour that really hits the spot.

Walking into Luigi's for the first time, I was confronted by red face brick walls, terracotta tiles, fawn tables and trees in huge earthy pots, all creating a warm and inviting feeling. On the walls, hang the portraits of the owners and their forefathers with the story of Luigi's. This embodies the feeling of family, family cooking and family hospitality.

We were welcomed by a cheerful host and were asked where we would like to be seated. Luigi's has several seating arrangements — one upstairs, one interior and one exterior. We chose to sit in the picturesque outside area, surrounded by their potted trees, in the warm November breeze, looking at the stars. A lovelier setting for a date night would be hard to come by. A waiter arrived and handed us menus. This is where the date became difficult. Do we chose to have starters or dessert? Pizza or pasta? How do we choose between their 28 pizza options? Or do we just build our own? After ordering drinks (flawless Americanos for these caffeine addicts!), we decided on dessert instead of a starter. I ordered the Cannelloni pasta and my partner got the Alla Eva pizza with extra halloumi.

By the time our food arrived, which was not a long wait, we were glad we had chosen a real Italian restaurant, rather than some luxury five-star establishment. My Cannelloni, pasta tubes stuffed with spinach and ricotta in a superb tomato sauce, was divine. Let me tell you, I have had a lot of Cannelloni in my time. It can be tricky to find a yummy vegetarian dish at most restaurants, but the Cannelloni here was, without doubt, the best I have ever had. My partner's Alla Eva looked so good, I was tempted to steal a piece — vegetarian or not. The Alla Eva pizza is a paper-thin crispy pizza base smeared with scarlet goodness, tangy mozzarella and sweet pork ribs. It was made extra decadent with the huge golden nuggets of halloumi.

When we were done with our mains, we were simply too stuffed to eat dessert after all. But judging on how delicious the rest of the food was, we knew we could not give it a miss. So we got a dessert doggy bag, or rather, a dessert human bag. We chose the black cherry cheese cake because we can't resist cherries ... and creamy cheesecake. When we gobbled it up hours later — in sweat pants, in bed — we did not feel at all guilty. That slice was so luscious and creamy with a tart sweetness and a flavourful burst of cherries, we simply could not feel guilty about those extra calories.

Lupa Osteria is a Roman-style, Italian restaurant, which was founded in 2013 by Guy Cluver (owner/entrepreneur) and Chris Black (owner/ chef) and was franchised in 2013. These owners have over 40 years experience in the hospitality industry collectively. This restaurant has nine locations around the country, with two located in Johannesburg (in Fourways and Bedfordview). The restaurant is named after the Roman wolf goddess, Lupa. They proudly boast the legend of Lupa on their website, which tells the story of how she saved and nurtured Romulus and Remus (you know — the twins reputed to have founded Rome). The legend adds to the charm of this restaurant and is a huge hit with the kids.

Lupa Osteria

Having been introduced to this Osteria by a friend towards the end of 2018, we dined at the Florida Road location in Durban. I honestly asked myself why I didn't know about this place, especially since the food is amazing! We had the Sophie Bear Pizza (with Bacon, Gorgonzola, caramelised onions & rocket), and the Hot Chick (Peri-peri chicken, mushrooms, caramelised onions, garlic & feta). It's safe to say we ate until we were stuffed and we still hadn't finished the pizzas! This restaurant is a quintessential example of great food at reasonable prices.

Lupa Osteria

The pizza is wood-fired with a thin but fluffy crust in truly authentic Italian-style. The pasta is homemade, which should be a prerequisite for any authentic Italian restaurant, right!? Besides the pizza and pasta, the menu is diverse with Antipasti, salads, Secondi courses and seafood. You can even buy sauces from them. There's also a cocktail menu with some delicious drinks (if you're a gin-lover, I recommend the Designer Gin and Elderflower Gin & Tonic). And let me not forget that there's a vegan menu, so all are catered for (although, to be honest, the menu could be a little more extensive). The wine list is also quite extensive and caters to different tastes with all the various options. They're divided into different categories for both red and white wine varieties: easy and delicious; crisp, dry and refreshing; rich and buttery; and nerdy, geeky and different.

Lupa Osteria

The ambience at Lupa is casual and relaxed and feels like a family restaurant. It's great for quick bites or long lunches and dinners. Although it is casual dining, the interiors are modern, sleek and clean and elevate the casual dining experience. The kids will love it as well (and, yes, there's a kids menu). The service we received was excellent, with our server being very attentive. So, if you're looking for casual dining, with authentic Roman-style food, give Lupa Osteria a try.

Lupa Osteria

A year ago — give or take — I was wasting a lunch break stalking different figures on the Joburg food scene on Instagram. Little did I know that I was about to stumble on something big. On 13 November 2017, Gary Kyriacou, the business partner of Marble in Rosebank, posted a selfie with David Higgs, the brains behind Marble, wearing hard hats with the caption "And it all begins again". This set off a frantic series of events that eventually lead to someone spilling the beans: Gary and David were going to open a second restaurant. One month and one day later, Gary posted a teaser video revealing the name of the eatery — Saint — and that it would open in 2018.

saint

Skip 10 months ahead and I found myself standing in one of the biggest restaurant and bar combos I've visited in SA. At 1 000m², Saint can seat 230 people, has a large DJ booth, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Maude Street. Saint is based on the concept of Pazzo Italiano – loosely, the crazy Italian. It has quickly become the go-to pizza and champagne destination for Sandton’s trendy, up-and-coming business crowd.

Higgs and Kyriacou gained the original inspiration for Saint during their visit to New York in early 2016, as part of their planning and research for Marble. For David and Gary, the restaurant they went to in Manhattan had an unbelievable atmosphere. And, when clothing designer Alexander Wang walked in with a troop of models and started ordering pizza and champagne, they knew this was a combination they wanted to bring home with them.

Saint
After opening Marble, the team realised that Sandton held captive a great niche market for the idea. Beyond the food – because everyone eats and loves pizza – it was the right place for the vibe. In a city with energy, integration and positivity, Saint provides a much-needed, out-of-work experience.

In preparation for the opening of Saint, head chef Matt van Niekerk and chef de partie Tyler Clayton visited Milan, Italy, and worked alongside pizza masters Gino Sorbillo and Gennaro Rapido of Lievito Madre Sorbillo in Duomo Milan to learn the art of authentic Neopolitan pizza-making. Lievito Madre Sorbillo is a family-run restaurant, like many other authentic eateries in the city, and started rolling-out dough back in 1935, so pizza-making is a career. For Matt and Tyler, arriving at Gennaro’s Milan restaurant on a Monday morning was a welcome reward after a long journey from South Africa.

Saint

Saint’s pizza embodies this authenticity – imported flour, handmade local buffalo mozzarella and the freshest ingredients. Each pizza features a maximum of three to four toppings – unlike other local offerings. High standards and consistency are key – if a pizza isn’t the right size, right shape, has too much sauce or there isn’t a simplicity and balance of flavour, it doesn’t make the serve.

Toppings include fresh mozzarella; sirloin, caramelised onion and pumpkin seed pesto; cured meats with fresh tomato and taleggio cheese; and The Big Nacho with spicy jerked chicken, avocado, sour cream and cumin. There are also a few pizza Bianca (without tomato) options like the spinach, crème fraîche, Parmesan and fried egg; mushroom truffle, preserved lemon, Gorgonzola and asparagus; and salami, black olive, white anchovy, basil and mozzarella.

Saint

Saint gives people food they recognise and enjoy that's simple and beautiful, presented at an elevated level in a sophisticated setting. The two imported and custom-made Stefano Ferrara pizza ovens are the gold-mosaic centrepieces of the expansive kitchen. Standing amidst some of the finest equipment, chef skills and ingredients, they certainly fire-up Sandton’s culinary scene.

Saint

Dishes other than pizza include rigatoni pasta with either lamb or short rib; saffron risotto with osso bucco and gremolata; lamb shank and polenta; octopus casserole with chorizo, bean, kale and garlic; and wood-fired beets with mustard greens and beetroot pesto. For dessert, there is affogato, tiramisu, chocolate mousse, gelato and biscotti, and milkshakes.

Saint

In closing, Saint pays homage to Italian food while drenched with attention to detail. Although I wouldn't come to this eatery weekly, it's an excellent choice for special occasions and a Joburg bucket-list restaurant. Experience it for yourself at the base of the MARC building in Sandton.

Well, Blairgowrie has recently(ish) been made the new home of Amarcord Osteria and, what is Illovo’s massive loss is Blairgowrie’s awesome gain. Headed by super-nonna-chef, Luciana Righi, the new Amarcord is one of Joburg’s best-kept secrets. The name Amarcord comes from “a classic Italian masterpiece directed by Federico Fellini, AMARCORD is a heartwarming story of coming home to fond memories, bygone times, family lunches and good food according to their website.

Luciana was the original it-girl and chef of Assaggi, the well-known gangster-politician restaurant in the Post Office Centre in Illovo.(I say gangster-politician as I’ve seen both Mikey Schultz and Trevor Manual dining there at the same time.) After a few years at the helm of a very successful operation, she then packed her bags to start her own venture and moved across the road to the Thrupps Centre where she opened the original Amarcord. The old restaurant felt very formal and cavernous, so Luciana and her “son” Mario Guerini went looking for more intimate venues.

They found their spot, where the old Jay’s Diner used to be, right next to LISOF and the Blairgowrie Shopping Centre on 53 Conrad Drive. And they have not looked back since. The menu has remained largely the same as before and offers locals, traditional, homemade northern Italian delights such as lasagna (a firm favourite), zucchini fritti (their version of chips) and a delicious veal cottolettas (steaks)... to name a few.

Amarcord

A must-try is the dolce della nonna dessert –  the layers of sabayon, cream, amaretti biscuits, pecan nuts, dark chocolate and Marsala wine makes for one of the most delicious things I have ever had the privilege to taste.

Overall, I believe that the food is sublime and the service is attentive and sincere. Luciana and Mario are always at the shop and can often be spied outside, having a smoke and a fat chat in Italian while they plan their days and menus. I’ve often visited where Luciana has greeted me like an old family member and felt a bit like a mob boss who has arrived at his favourite Italian “joint”. They’re so authentic that I often find myself putting on a bit of an accent to join in. Sadly, I will never be Italian, even if I learn to speak it. And THAT is the magic of Amarcord; it feels like a little slice of Italy in your backyard.

Luciana and Mario’s magic is impossible to replicate and makes for a great meal for friends and la famiglia. Authentic and delicious, just like Italy.

Apart from the chance to rent a retail shop along the Joziburg Lane or a trader space in the foodhall, apartments are also available for rent from Molten Black, as are other shops, office spaces, and trader spots (for craft and consumables) in the E1 Traders Market that’s under development at No. One Eloff. Where Is Joziburg Lane?

Joziburg Lane is in the heart of the inner-city. NOT north (Braamfontein), nor east (Maboneng) or west (Ferreirastown and Newtown), BUT in the south-central part of downtown Johannesburg. Just behind Marshalltown, at the bottom of Eloff Street, near the M2 highway.

You cannot miss the huge yellow and blue No. One Eloff building on the corner of Eloff and Wemmer Jubilee Streets, where Joziburg Lane runs around the back of the building. There’s safe rooftop parking is available.
