If you haven’t yet heard of the Big Red Barn in Irene, then you have been seriously missing out! This antique hay barn, just 15 minutes from Centurion, is a phenomenal destination that provides a wealth of activities for each and every member of your family.
This is a fun-filled place to visit with the whole family. There is so much to explore and experience, and the day is never long enough – no one ever wants to go home. Not only that, but it's also affordable entertainment, so you get to try a whole bunch of exciting activities without busting the bank. Plus, there’s a really cool giant wooden pirate ship in the kids’ playground and loads of space to play games. It would be a brilliant place to have a party, too!
Acrobranch is always a win – an obstacle course through the trees that both children and adults can enjoy. Not only does it provide a variety of age-appropriate courses (suitable from age 3 upwards), but it also builds confidence and coordination, while also being a fantastic team-building experience.
We recommend that you book ahead as it can get busy, plus with the COVID-19 safety protocols and regulations, there's limited capacity. This is also a wonderful idea for a children’s birthday party.
The Cycle Park is another must-do for active families, plus all the paths can also be used for trail runners. Featuring over 36km of scenic tracks through the forest, over rocky grasslands and across farm fields, this is a great workout and place to test your off-road skills.
We recommend that you check out the route descriptions and opening hours so that you can plan your day accordingly!
Vroom Pedal Go-Karts are also on offer with tracks for kids aged 2 to 5, as well a more adventurous off-road course for older kids and their parents. You can either book a quick spin, or choose a "multiple ride" package if you feel like spending more time on the course.
We recommend that you click here for the various costs, beginning at just R20.
Vintage tractor rides at the Big Red Barn are so much fun for kids of every age as you explore the Sunlawns Farm Forest on the back of a trailer! Each ride takes 20 minutes and costs around R40 per person.
We recommend that you book your ticket at reception as soon as you arrive.
Clay Café is the perfect haven for those looking for something a little more crafty to do. Choose a ceramic item – anything from figurines and décor items to plates, jugs and mugs – and enjoy a light meal, cappuccino or piece of cake while you paint.
We recommend that you get the whole family together and each paint a mug to take home!
The Red Barn Café is a beautiful urban-style eatery overlooking the Eucalyptus forest and dishing up outstanding food to hungry guests. The burgers themselves are worth a visit, as are the lamb ciabatta, pulled pork baguette, buttermilk scones, Russian rolls and amazing Belgian waffles..
Ludwig’s Roses is synonymous with a wide variety of beautiful rose bushes that continue to thrive when you get them home. This is the perfect spot to buy a few scented rose, rose care sprays, candles, diffusers, hand creams, soaps and even rose fudge!
We recommend that you visit their website for the full range of roses available.
The Irene Village Market takes place on the first and last Saturday of the month. This beautiful market includes everything from crafts and artisanal foods to furniture, craft beer and wine.
We recommend that you make a day of it. Head to the market from 09:00 – 14:30 and spend the rest of the day enjoying the many other activities on offer at The Big Red Barn!
