The Burgers

Needless to say, Husdons The Burger Joint offers specialty crafted burgers that are about as good as it gets. Burger options include beef, chicken and vegan. The patties for any of their burger options can be swapped for another of these choices. The chicken and beef patties are both made from free range meat, a fact evident in the taste. With over 13 burgers on their menu, there are simply too many to mention individually. So we'll just mention our favourites. The Bacon Jam, with a beef patty, bacon jam, cheddar, dusted onions and rocket is simply divine. But we're hard pressed to not go for The Player, with a beef patty loaded to the max with streaky bacon, avo and feta. Chilli lovers will love the Wise Guy, stuffed with a beef patty, sweet pepper relish, jalapeño, rocket and chipotle chilli paste.

Gourmet Milkshakes

We can't have burgers without a thick and luscious milkshake to finish things off. Luckily for us, Hudsons offers a total of ten such milkshakes. These are Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Oreo, Bar One, Chocolate Brownie, Cookie Monster, Salted Caramel Popcorn, Strawberry Candyfloss, Nutella Waffle and Vegan Oreo milkshakes. Not only are these deliciously creamy and decadent, but they are also the size of a small child. Unfortunately our top choices, the Nutella Waffle and Cookie Monster, are only available in large. Which simply wouldn't do, as we wanted to try as much of the food as possible and not fill up on drinks. But we couldn't resist and tried the Strawberry Candyfloss milkshake, which was gloriously thick, creamy and indulgent, loaded with a cloud of candy floss, dusted with rainbow sprinkles and finished with a frozen strawberry.

Great Sides

Side dishes can make or break a meal. With sides like Loaded Fries, Avo Fries, Onion Rings, Disco Fries and Truffle Cheese Fries, the meal was certainly made. In fact, we recommend getting a few sides with your appetizers and mains. Just because they are that good. Our favourite of the sides were definitely the Avo Fries. What is that, you ask? Well it's avocado slivers battered in bread crumbs, deep fried and served with sweet and spicy chilli sauce. We don't think we'll ever eat avocado any other way ever again. Yes, it was that amazing!

Bro Food

If the ridiculous burgers, spectacular milkshakes and unique side dishes weren't enough, Hudsons also offers an array of what we can only call Bro Food. These include items like pizza, nachos, ribs, wings, steak, tacos and sliders. And while it may be perfect for boy's night, it's also sublime for the ladies. The Three Little Pigs pizza is certain to delight all diners. It's topped with pulled pork, crispy bacon and pepperoni. And who could resist The Surfer? With BBQ pulled chicken, caramelised onion, sour cream, garlic, rosemary and spring onion, we couldn't. For a lighter meal, try their Bacon Wrapped Poppers, Jalapeño Mac 'n Cheese Croquettes or one of the mouthwatering salads.

Vegan Dining

Vegan diners will adore the plentiful vegan options at this joint. Hudsons has a range of vegan meals, including appetisers, sides, mains, desserts and even a milkshake. The Panko Crumbed Wings with vacon bits, vegan garlic mayo, sriracha and spring onions is a definite must try. Follow this with a Falafel Taco, Vacon Nachos, any one of the six vegan burgers or one of the three vegan pizzas. Alternatively, swap out the patty of any of the regular burgers with a Beyond Meat Patty for just *R35. We love The Influencer Burger, with a Cajun crumbed schnitzel, rocket, vegan mayo and mozzarella, tomato, grilled pineapple, cabbage and pickles. This is paired perfectly with the Vegan Oreo Milkshake. Finish your meal with the Vegan Matcha Ice Cream. To boot, Hudsons offers half price on all vegan mains every Monday.

Cocktail Hour

While this joint has many beer, whiskey, wine and hot drink choices, we can't resist a crafted cocktail every now and then. The Berry Press (Beefeater Pink Gin, sweet & sour, berries and soda) and The Pink Lady (Whitley Neill Gin with pink tonic and candyfloss) are truly Instagram worthy. But we adore The Leopard (Bains, lime, triple sec, vanilla syrup and soda). Or craft your own gin and tonic, by pairing your favourite gin with your choice of tonic and top it off with your own selection of fruit.

The trend of deep-fried food has grown immensely in Joburg, making those who love fried food very happy. But how happy can you be until you know the best spots to find these delicious nibbles?

You Get Deep Fried Food

You Get Fried Food, You Get Fried Food, Everybody Gets Fried Food

We found spots that offer a range of deep-fried food, with a few mouthwatering surprises that you are going to love.

Deep Fried

Hudsons The Burger Joint

Hudsons has claimed the title "The Burger Joint", and that is most certainly what they are good at. After grabbing an infamous burger, try the Deep Fried Oreos for dessert. They are to-die-for!

When we first looked at their dessert menu, our eyes almost popped out with surprise. We saw the Oreos with a deep-fried twist, served with ice-cream. We didn't know what to expect, but somehow, our expectations were met.

Asian restaurant, Hashi is proving that there are no limits to food. This restaurant, situated in Linden, is a little gem hiding tons of deliciousness.

Those who love sushi will definitely appreciate this. Their menu has Deep-Fried Sushi, which is very unique. We have not tried it, however. This is because we could not resist the sweets, so we tried the Deep-Fried Ice-Cream instead. We do have to confess, it was most certainly worth it.

Cafe Patisse

Cafe Patisse is situated in Greenside. They have some of the most innovative baked goods we have seen. The creativity they put into making their delicious goodies is quite refreshing.

Here, you will find what they call a Koeksister Doughnut, filled to the brim with love (we will leave that melting surprise to your imagination). This has to be the most amazing burst in texture and comfort we've felt to date. You have to try it. It's a must!

Paquito's Treatery

We all love a good churro and trust us when we say you will be spoiled for choice at Paquito's Treatery.

They have many amazing flavours that include a South African fave, milk tart. Other flavours include Nutella and Oreo, among others. They also have savoury choices for those who aren't into the sugary stuff.

And they offer catering services for events and can easily align to your theme, they are quite creative.

Deep Fried

Situated in the bustling suburb of Parkhurst is Craft. This is probably one of the best places to find Deep-Fried Chicken and Waffles.

Many might not understand the combination, but don't knock it until you try it! This is one of the best combos, yet it goes unnoticed.

And there we have it, Jozi - a list of the where to go for those deep fried goods.

Dukes has a very wide selection of burgers which often makes deciding what to eat here a bit tricky. Do you go for their suggestions or do you make your own? Beef, lamb, chicken, ostrich or veg? The options are endless, but you can rest easy knowing whatever you choose will be juicy and delicious.

Where: 14 Gleneagles Road, Greenside, Johannesburg.

Our pick: The Big Cheese, a beef patty with tomato relish, melted cheddar, mozzarella and feta topped with homemade gherkins.

Voodoo Lily Café

If you're looking for a family restaurant that serves the freshest, most nourishing dishes, go to Voodoo Lily Café. Their food is locally sourced and organic where possible, so you can be assured of the highest quality. But let's get to why we are here: the burgers. They are made from 100% grass-fed beef and the most amazing toppings like roasted peppers, caramelised onions, fresh chilli and avo. If you're not a fan of red meat, you can choose the chicken breast or vegetarian patty and build your own burger.

Where: St Andrew St & Wrenrose Ave, Birdhaven, Johannesburg

Our pick: Dreamy Cheese, a juicy patty stuffed with mozzarella and topped with shakshuka sauce, cheddar and rocket.

Hudsons The Burger Joint

Originally from Cape Town, Hudsons The Burger Joint was a warmly welcomed addition to Parkhurst. It doubles as a great after-work watering hole since they have no shortage of cocktails! There are burgers here for everyone, from the carb-conscious and non-meat eaters to those who just want a huge, meaty meal. Plus, you can swap any patty for one of your choice – chicken, veg, ostrich, you name it.

Where: Corner 4th Avenue and 14th Street, Parkhurst, Johannesburg.

Our pick: The Rockafella, a free-range beef patty topped with Swiss cheese, pulled pork, pineapple and a fried egg. Go for a side of sweet potato wedges.

Love Food

Love Food is the cutest spot in Braamfontein. During the week, they serve up all kinds of things from salads and sandwiches to cakes and more. But, on a Friday, they do something different – Fridays are for burgers, and it’s well worth the week-to-week wait! There are three patty options to choose from: pure lean beef, chicken or veggie. Then you add a salad and/or wedges to your plate and you’ve got yourself a hearty meal.

Where: 4 Ameshoff Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Our pick: The veggie burger is so great! It comes on a sesame seed roll and toppings-wise, cheddar, honey mustard mayo and pickles make for a winning combo.

JB's Corner

JB's Corner is one of those great ‘something for everyone’ restaurants. So, while they’re not specifically a burger place, their burgers do shine through! They’ve got healthy options as well, so if you’re looking after your figure, or you're banting, you can have your burger in a bowl of cauli rice instead of on a bun.

Where: 3 High Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg (but there are other branches in Sandton and Hyde Park Corner).

Our pick: The Sennett 94, a beef patty with goat’s cheese, relish, avo and grilled onions.

While they are probably better known for their ripped waiters than their food, don’t be fooled – Beefcakes certainly lives up to its name (in both senses of the word!). They have a great burger menu and you can create your own. Come here for a lively night out, a bachelorette or, simply to tuck into good food and sip cocktails. Entertainment varies, depending on the night.

Where: Illovo Muse Centre, 198 Oxford Road, Illovo, Johannesburg.

Our pick: Babycakes – three small beef burgers on mini buns, served with cheese, guacamole and a mushroom sauce. How about adding a glass of rosé to that order?

Free Food

Okay, so this is a vegan restaurant, but hear us out… their chickpea burger has got to be one of our all-time favourites. We know it’s a vegan place and this is an article about burgers but, don't knock it till you've tried it.

Where: Shop 5B, Reithmere, Corner of Delta Road and Corlett Drive, Birnam, Johannesburg.

Our pick: The Chickpea Burger, served on a toasted gluten- and grain-free bread round, with hummus, grilled brinjal, tahini, fresh tomato, red onion relish and sweet potato wedges with salsa dairy-free cheese. Bonus: it’s healthy!

Salvation Café

You'll find Salvation Café in the 44 Stanley complex. Go here and don’t even look at the menu, just order any of their burgers – you won't be sorry! They come in three varieties and are sure to satisfy your craving with the first bite.

Where: 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark, Johannesburg.

Our pick: The Salvation Gourmet Burger – it’s a grass-fed beef burger with bacon, caramelised onion, guacamole and Dutch cheese, served with potato wedges.
