The James Hall Museum of Transport in Johannesburg is the largest and most comprehensive museum of land transport in South Africa. Established by the late Jimmie Hall together with the City of Johannesburg in February 1964, the museum's impressive collection of animal-drawn vehicles, coaches, motorcycles, buses and cars dates back to as early as 1870. This museum offers motor enthusiasts and inquisitive children insight into what transportation in early Johannesburg was like. Their steam vehicle collection is one of the most popular attractions for the little ones, as well as antique fire engines donated by the Johannesburg Fire Station. Housed in the East Hall of the museum, one of these engines is a 1913 Merryweather Steam Pump. Not only will the kids be enamored by the nostalgia of these machines, but they will learn a ton here.
Score yourself a few extra parent points by bringing the kids to the James Hall Museum of Transport. Teaching them about the history of the city, its people and how they got around, the museum recognises that the theme of transport recurs throughout the primary school syllabus. Bring the images in their textbooks to life by taking a tour around the museum. Unfortunately, guided tours are only offered to groups of 60 or more. However, there are information signs on almost every display, so you can easily find your way around learning all about locomotives and their modern equivalents.
If your historical knowledge is somewhat lacking, bring Granny and Grandpa along to help out with the facts. We're sure they will be delighted to take a trip down memory lane back to their childhoods. Plus, sharing their memories with the grandchildren is always worthwhile. Make sure to bring your camera with, to catch all the many photo opportunities.
Now that you have the whole family assembled, take a ride on a London bus, ox-wagon or vintage fire engine. The James Hall Museum of Transport offers short rides on some of their iconic machines. The jokesters of the family may want to try their hand at balancing on a Penny-Farthing or riding in tandem. These antiquated bicycles are a sight to behold with their strange configurations. Don't be surprised if the kids wonder in awe at how people possibly traveled on one big wheel!
Once you have thoroughly explored the displays, head over to the museum's gift shop. Here, you can find postcards and transport-related trinkets to take home. Pick up a memento or two to remember your time with the kids at the museum. Alternatively, you can set up a family picnic on the lawns just outside the museum. This is a great way to wind down after all the excitement!
The James Hall Museum of Transport is the ideal place to take the kids these holidays. So, pack them up into the car and get ready to experience a world in which Joburg's roads where littered by carriages, wagons and trams. It's definitely a marvel you won't want them to miss out on. Entrance to the museum is free, so you really have no excuse not to visit.

Time For Some Art Jamming!
We first discovered Art Jamming a few years ago, and make a plan to visit at least once during the school holidays. Kayla is now 12 and STILL enjoys going there, as does Isabella, my 5-year-old. The two of them will happily spend over two hours sitting at their easels, chatting away, and admiring each other’s handiwork. While I grab a takeaway cappuccino and enjoy a few heavenly hours of peace and quiet (also known as shopping).
In a nutshell, Art Jamming is dedicated to helping kids get in touch with their creativity. There are no rules and zero guidelines – kids can paint whatever they choose. Simply purchase and pay for a canvas, and everything else is covered – paint on tap, brushes, tools and supervision.
At this age, Isabella is quite keen to explore various painting “techniques” and needs very little adult input. She has been known to finish a painting, turn it over, and paint on the back! Kayla is the opposite – she prefers to choose one of the many designs that are freely available and trace it onto her canvas. She also sometimes ask one of the resident assistants to draw something for her – and they are more than willing to help out. Her favourite is definitely the “splash zone” where kids can, quite literally, throw paint at the canvas. I’m dying to give it a try!
Art Jamming is also a fantastic idea for kids’ parties – imagine 2 hours of painting time, as well as the option to provide additional catering. Corporate team building is also on offer – you can imagine the discussions that take place while everyone is painting, not to mention the life lessons that are learned in the process. You know, how the fear of failure can cripple a project? Or how mistakes can be woven into a design to make it even better than before?
At present, there are THREE Art Jamming venues in Joburg – Melrose Arch, Cresta and Bedfordview. Click here for details.
Highly recommended: Kayla gives it an 8/10

When your kids reach a certain age, it becomes slightly more challenging finding fun physical activities for them that don’t involve school sports. In an ideal world, they would be able to ride their bikes, go skateboarding and play basketball until dinner time – but for many of us, that is not a luxury we have right now. Then there’s the added challenge of getting them OFF their screens and focus on the real world.
Enter CityROCk in Randburg – a phenomenal facility on Republic Road that provides wall climbing facilities for kids of all ages, as well as adults. But don’t take OUR word for it – we sent 12-year old Kayla NT off to give it a try with a few friends – here’s what she had to say:
What activities are on offer?
There are Automatic Belay Walls, which mean you don’t need someone to help belay you down. You first have to take part in an introductory lesson that teaches you how to manage the ropes. There are also Bouldering areas where you can climb (without a rope) - some are easier than others so you never get bored. There’s always a harder one to try! Smaller kids aged 5 and up can also try climbing, so it’s great for families to go together.
There is also a dedicated yoga and Pilates studio, but we were too busy climbing and didn’t go inside.
What makes it special?
It’s really challenging and can be a little scary at first. But once you get going and you realise that you are completely safe, you go higher than you ever expected. Even those of us that are scared of heights!
What does it cost?
The costs vary – you can click here for the full list. We paid R110 per kid, and R90 for shoe and harness rental. You can also sign up to become a member – kids pay R350 per month.
There are also a few different courses that kids can take if they really enjoy climbing and want to get serious about it – I recommend the Kids Top Rope Introduction Course – R640 for 3 days. These courses run once a month. There are also School Holiday Crag Days that kids can do after completing the course – these are R260 (includes gear rental and excludes transport to the local climbing crag).
Do you need to take extra money (outside the entrance fee)?
There is a coffee shop with FREE WiFI, so take extra money for drinks and snacks. There’s also a Specialist Outdoor Gear Shop that sells loads of amazing climbing, hiking and outdoor sports gear, clothing and equipment – so definitely check that out. We saw yoga accessories, camping gear, ski jackets and so much more. I can’t believe we have never heard of this place before!
Did everyone enjoy it?
Everyone! Even my friend that had a broken arm (and couldn’t climb) enjoyed watching everyone and shouting instructions from the bottom. She can’t wait until her arm is out the cast and then we’re going back. I think both girls and boys enjoy it just as much!
Is it a good venue for parties?
Definitely. They host parties for between 6 and 25 kids (all children must be over 5 years of age). You can choose between 11:00 – 13:00 and 15:00 – 17:00, and pay R250 per child. Activities include team races on the automatic belay wall, ladder climbing, bouldering, knot tying skills and so much more. Sounds like fun!
What would you rate this activity?
A definite 8 out of 10. It’s highly recommended!

And for shoppers pressed for time, there’ll be five gift-wrapping kiosks strategically placed throughout the centre, where you can have all your presents beautifully wrapped for a donation of your choice. All proceeds from the gift-wrapping kiosks will be donated to Edu-Care. Paddington Bear visits Eastgate
One of the world's most famous bears is back! Paddington 2 hits cinemas on the 01 December 2017. A perfect family movie for the holiday season, you can see this live-action film in Ster-Kinekor at Eastgate. You can also get to meet Paddington Bear in the Hamleys Court from 19 – 24 December 2017 (times to be advised).
Paddington is an anthropomorphised spectacled bear. He is always polite, addressing people as "Mr", "Mrs" and "Miss", rarely by first names, and kindhearted, though he inflicts hard stares on those who incur his disapproval. He has an endless capacity for innocently getting into trouble, but he is known to "try so hard to get things right." He was discovered in Paddington Station, London, by the (human) Brown family who adopted him, and thus he gives his full name as "Paddington Brown".
Festive Dining At Eastgate
From fine dining to fast food options, the Eastgate Food Emporium has it all. Mediterranean, Asian and Italian sit-down options with a variety of convenient “grab & go” options too. Sit outside and enjoy the festive atmosphere while your kids play on the jungle gym. The Food Emporium is conveniently located opposite Ster Kinekor. So, sit and relax before enjoying a movie on IMAX with new releases for the holidays including Paddington Bear.

A Christmas Must
A bestselling writer in Victorian London sets out to revive his flagging career and reimagines Yuletide celebrations in The Man Who Invented Christmas - an entertaining and enchanting glimpse into the life and mind of master storyteller Charles Dickens as he creates the quintessential holiday tale, A Christmas Carol.
After a string of successful novels, the world-renowned writer, Dickens (Dan Stevens), has had three flops in a row. With the needs of his burgeoning family and his own extravagance rapidly emptying his pockets, Dickens grows desperate for another bestseller.
Tormented by writer's block and at odds with his publishers, he grasps at an idea for a sure-fire hit, a Christmas story he hopes will capture the imagination of his fans and solve his financial problems. But with only six weeks to write and publish the book before the holiday, and without the support of his publishers, he will have to work feverishly to meet his deadline.
Dickens locks himself away to write, but his chaotic household that now includes his profligate father (Tony winner Jonathan Pryce) is a constant distraction. Working late into the night, the writer channels his own memories to conjure up the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come and places them on a collision course with the misanthropic miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Oscar winner Christopher Plummer).
Based on Les Standiford's 2008 book, The Man Who Invented Christmas: How Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol Rescued His Career and Revived Our Holiday Spirits, the movie brings the imagination of one of the world's best-loved authors to vivid reality as he creates the masterpiece that has shaped modern-day Christmas celebrations for more than 150 years.
