From Our Playlist With Love

Here at Joburg.co.za HQ, we love sharing the latest content of what's hip and happening in the city with you. But with the Coronavirus outbreak, we deemed it necessary to get personal and share a list of songs that's been keeping us afloat and helping us get through this tough time in our lives. Click here to listen to all the songs we’ve chosen!

Music Is Fluent In All Five Languages Of Love

There are five languages of love - Quality Time, Gifts, Words of Affirmation, Physical Touch and Acts of Service. All of these languages can be found in music:

Quality Time

While everyone is indoors, practicing social distancing, the city feels a bit lonely. We've already put together a list of top Netflix and Showmax shows to keep you entertained. But, to keep you company while doing your chores, there's nothing better than music. Anything is possible with the perfect playlist, so spend some quality time indoors with some special music.

Gifts

While you may not be able to unwrap music, it still makes a great gift. This is because it shows thoughtfulness and effort and may even help your loved ones stay sane during these tough times. Consider our playlist as a gift from us to you, to show you just how much we value all our readers.

Words Of Affirmation

Music reminds us that we are never alone. There is a song to help us through any problem. These songs include verbal compliments that reflect love and appreciation. This playlist is a constant reminder of how much we appreciate and love our audience and hope you are keeping safe at all times.

Physical Touch

We know that touching is a sensitive subject right now, but this love language is about showing expressions of love and reinforcing a sense of presence. We hope our special playlist fuels you and helps you wake up every day with a positive outlook on life.

Acts Of Service

The world is a scary place right now. But through acts of service, we can all come together and help each other survive this global pandemic. One of the ways we're helping you is by making your day better, one song at a time. So, blast some music, dance around your house and let these quarantunes guide you to positive thoughts!

Do you know of any positive songs we should add to our playlist? Let us know about them in the comments section below!

Nasty C’s Reflections On ‘God Flow’

On the bass-heavy single, the rapper spars lyrically with fellow Durbanite, crownedYung, confidently displaying his song-writing nous. “It’s really about being a God in whatever you feel like," the SAMA Award-winning rapper says of God Flow. "When I made the song at that particular time, that’s how I felt. When I said ‘God Flow' for the first time, it kind of made me feel I could really take this song far."

Nasty C Speaks About His Success

In his Song Stories, Nasty C also speaks about his success and the tales behind his recent album, Strings and Bling. After rising to fame with 2015's energetic Juice Back, Nasty C landed Davido and Cassper Nyovest on the track's remix. In 2016, he followed that up with the hit single Hell Naw, from his debut album, Bad Hair.

As a mainstay of the South African hip hop scene, Nasty C has come far, becoming Apple Music's most streamed South African artist of the past four years, appearing on the Billboard Charts as a feature on Major Lazer's Particula and having every song from his multi-platinum album Strings and Bling achieve gold status or more.

About Apple Music's Stories

Without a doubt, Joburg can strut its stuff with the best in the street fashion world whether against Los Angeles, New York, or even Cape Town for that matter. And if there’s one fashion item where we truly excel, it’s our kicks. Yup, Joburg is the sneaker capital of the world – sorry, Tokyo you’ll have to wait your turn on the throne. And speaking of sneakers, we want to introduce you to Sneaker Shack.

sneaker shack

And as all sneaker owners know, keeping your foot fashion pristine is a full-time job. Fortunately Sneaker Shack is in the business of doing this for you. Co-founder Lolo Ndlovu explains that Sneaker Shack is a brand that sprung up from a gap in the hip-hop and streetwear subculture. Needless to say, we live in the era where names such as Chuck Taylor, Yeezys, and Superstar can earn you more street cred than being able to know any of Notorious BIG’s albums (sadly).

sneaker shack

So Sneaker Shack was launched in 2016 as a pop-up store in the inner city (think Maboneng area) and when they grew, they opened up a permanent shop at the Hobart Centre in Bryanston. Sneaker Shack boasts a 24-hour turnaround for valeting and at the time of writing, prices ranged from R120 to R260.

It's entrepreneurs like Lolo and his partners that put Joburg on the map as a place of innovation and enterprise, and they prove that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Old photos of their original pop-up (complete with makeshift wooden counter) compared to the new shop show they’ve come a long way. In fact, the team has pushed the business so far that in the short time since their inception, they have been able to offer franchisees the opportunity to buy into the dream.

How did you get involved in the music/radio industry?

For me, radio is all about the music. I came from an arts school, so when I went to study at the University of Pretoria I enrolled in a BA in Psychology and Criminology, but I needed something to balance the artsy side of me while on campus. So, I decided to join Tuks FM. Having never done radio before, I thought the only way into the entertainment industry was through TV and theatre. I got to Tuks FM and I fell in love with the station; they were playing so much music that I was never exposed to before. I enjoyed every moment of it. Two years later I got a call from the programming manager at YFM, he said I should come and try some of their shows. I got to YFM and worked my way up and then two years later I got a call from Ravi from 947 and the rest is history.

What is the best thing about being on radio?

The music. I love listening to music. I listen to a lot of commercial music when I’m at work and then when I’m at home I listen to a lot of hip Hop, because I’m also a hip hop DJ.

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

I look up to Anele. She is a fine example of what can be achieved. She started her journey, like mine, at Tuks FM. I admire her, not only because she is a presenter, but because she has so many facets to her career.

What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on air?

It was Heritage Day and I asked listeners to send me voice notes to say common phrases in their language. One listener sent something so offensive, but I didn’t know and read it out on air. It was so embarrassing for me because I strive to be professional and I knew that was not supposed to happen, but it did.

You’re on air from 10am to 1pm, then what? What does the rest of your day look like?

There are a lot of things we do outside the office after our shows. I’m a hip hop DJ, voice-over artist and an MC.

What is the one thing no one knows about Ayanda MVP that we really need to know?

There’s nothing, nothing at all. I am an open book right now!

Any crazy listener/fan stories?

The thing with radio is you need to know what the audience will care about and what they won't care about. On this time slot the biggest thing is making sure you entertain the listener with more music and less talk. I haven't had any crazy stories yet on 947.

What Is It?
