French Toast Koffee Kafee
The French and the Dutch meet in Hartebeespoort and bring something brilliant to the table. French Toast Koffee Kafee is a must when you're at the dam for the day. Breakfast is served until 12:00 and the lunch menu is something to write home about. Brochette de pain doré, bacon et banane for the win ... Oh, you don't speak French? Not a problem. That'd be bacon and banana French toast skewers. Convincing, isn't it?
de Vette Mossel
The best way to enjoy good seafood is with friends and sand under your feet in front of a boma. Thankfully de Vette Mossel offers all of this at their eatery. It's like something out of a Hemingway novel - the Cuba years, of course. A house favourite would be the snoek and sweet potato.
Villa Paradiso Country Manor
Hartebeespoort is definitely a getaway spot I love as there are so many fun, family-friendly activities on offer. Enjoy some extreme jet boat rides on the dam, visit the elephant sanctuary or do some exciting zip lining – there is something for everyone. And, after a long day of exhilaration and sightseeing, relax in your hotel room at the luxurious 4-star Villa Paradiso Country Manor, which overlooks the soothing waters of the Hartebeespoortdam.
A contemporarily styled beach theme with a tropical island vibe is what you get when visiting Cocomo ... in Harties. It's a 4-Star Graded guesthouse worth the drive. Cocomo Guesthouse, Spa and Conference centre is one of the most popular guesthouses in Harties and is known for hosting many celebrities. It boasts a unique courtyard with sea sand and Tiki-Beach bar. Come revive and charge batteries at this hidden paradise. Although far from the coast, you will feel right at it.

One of the highlights for all of us was a visit to the Lion & Safari Park – if you have not yet visited their new venue on a 600-hectare wilderness reserve in the Cradle of Humankind, then you need to make a plan to visit as soon as possible.
We honestly thought we’d be there for a while and move on somewhere else for the remainder of the day, but there was so much to do that we ran out of time! The children had an absolute blast, and despite our visit taking place in the middle of a heat wave, none of us wanted to leave!
Here’s whats on offer:
Our plan of action was to begin with a Lion Cub interaction, cappuccinos and ice-cream, guided game drive, long lazy lunch, walk around the facilities while feeding the various ostrich, giraffe and antelope, G&Ts and ice cream and a very long play on the playground. Plus at least an hour spent in the “5 dome shopping experience” on the way out!
Volunteers from all over the world are welcome to apply for the Lion & Safari Park’s volunteer programme. We thought the tour guides were amazingly well trained and passionate about their jobs – turns out that many of them were volunteers!
This phenomenal programme gives you the chance to:
Entrance to the restaurants, curio shops and children's playground is FREE – you only pay for activities such as animal interactions and guided game drives. Click here for the rate card.

Sundays are made for little road trips to Hartbeespoort. Driving through Magaliesberg is part of the experience. It is one of the best ways to take in the wonderful flora of the deep west of Johannesburg's surrounds. What's even better is knowing that your destination will be worth the drive.
That brings us to the amazing, the fantastic, the wonderful Windmill Restaurant in Harties. As you head down the mountain into Hartebeespoort, just before you get to the dam, the windmill greets you on the left. The little centre built around it is laced with quirky little Dutch shops, a food market (the Jasmyn farmers market sells local produce), a massive bookstore... and of course, the restaurant.
The Windmill restaurant, as it's known, serves a mean brunch. Sure they have dinner and breakfast going but they are most well known for their mid-morning delights. Boys, if you ever want to impress your better half's parents, take them to this place – they are guaranteed to like you so much more for it.
From tantalising toasted sandwiches to big burgers that come with mega chips, there's something for everyone. We usually stick to the toasties but either way, the food is just what you're looking for on a Sunday road trip. Below the restaurant, there is a waffle house worth its weight in maple syrup. The place gets super packed on a Sunday, but usually clears out after lunchtime. If you've driven all the way from Joburg then you're not just going to have brunch and then leave... are you? So, go on have a waffle for us too!
