They prevent hair damage, add shine and give hair an overall glossy luxurious finish. The Carbon Open Air Drybar team used Glampalm’s phenomenal range of straighteners and curling tools to create bespoke styles for guests on the day.

DIY Beauty Face Masks

You don't need to head to the salon to enjoy a soothing and oh-so relaxing beauty face mask and all its benefits. You can create your own masks right in the comfort of your home with a few ingredients that you can find either in the pantry or fridge! We found a few homemade face mask recipes online to remedy different skin concerns ranging from dry skin to enlarged pores. Click here to find out more about these masks and how to make them. This is DIY beauty made easy!

Homemade Bath Bombs

Feeling a little tense or stressed out about this outbreak? Looking for a way to relax and forget about this pandemic just for a little while? Why not draw yourself a lovely warm bath and throw in a homemade bath bomb? Believe it or not, but bath bombs are actually pretty easy to make, most of the ingredients can be found in your kitchen (especially if you're an avid baker). Inspired By Charm has a simple bath bomb recipe here that you can use and customise as you please with your favourite colours and scents. And don't worry, if you don't have bath bomb molds, you can certainly find an alternative tool somewhere in the kitchen.

PS. Wondering how to draw the perfect bubble bath to help you relax? Here are a few tips!

DIY Lip Goodies

With winter arriving, so do chapped lips! So, why not take care of your lips with your own homemade lip balm? Making this from scratch is super easy, and best of all, you can find ALL the ingredients you need from Takealot - organic shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax, along with a heat-proof glass bowl, and you're ready to go. As for the recipe, visit Homemade for Elle and follow the instructions!

How about some lip gloss to top the balm? Homemade for Elle also has an easy recipe for that using similar ingredients as the balm. Don't know where to get jojoba oil? Head to Faithful To Nature! Essential oils are also available via Faithful To Nature.

For soft lips, why not make your own lip scrub to exfoliate? Homemade for Elle also has a few DIY recipes for that using staple ingredients you can find in your pantry. For a simple lip scrub, all you need is sugar, coconut oil and honey. Click here to see what other variations you can create!

Natural Hair Treatments

Hair taking a bit of a strain during the lockdown? Not to worry, you can create your own DIY natural hair treatments using a few ingredients from your kitchen.

Thinning hair? Try this "banana protein smoothie" mixture from Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, author of Hair Care Rehab: The Ultimate Hair Repair and Reconditioning Manual. All you need are two egg yolks, two ripe bananas, two to three tablespoons of honey, half a cup of conditioner and two tablespoons of olive oil. Just blitz it all together, slather it all over your hair and leave it in for 20 to 30 minutes. You'll see results instantly.

Dry hair? Two words - coconut oil! It's the ultimate moisturiser. Take a tablespoon or two of this miracle worker, warm it up in the microwave (not too hot!), rub it into damp hair then let it stay in your hair overnight. You might want to cover and protect your pillow with a towel or maybe wrap your hair in a head wrap towel or shower cap. Wash it out the next morning and you'll have healthier looking hair. You can also swap out the coconut oil with olive or avocado oil.

DIY Makeup Bags

Did you know you can make your own makeup bag without any sewing or hot glue (unless you really want to)? It is possible! All you'll need are a few items that you can find around your home. We found two tutorials on YouTube that'll take you step-by-step through making these bags from scratch. Here's one from DIY Crafts TV made out of a plastic gift bag and another duct-tape version by Susie. The only problem will be getting hold of zippers right now, but you can get those once the lockdown is over.

Homemade Makeup Drawer Dividers

Are your drawers looking messy? Use old shoe boxes to make drawer dividers to keep all your makeup, bits and bobs organised. DIYs.com has step-by-step instructions to get you started. Other tools you'll need are scissors, a hot glue gun (double sided tape or a strong stapler will also work), craft knife (or box cutter), ruler and a pencil/pen. The best part is you can customise them to suit your needs.

Homemade Bath Salts

One more DIY beauty creation to try at home! Instead of bathbombs, why not go the easier route and make DIY bath salts? You can find an easy recipe for this on DIYs.com. All the ingredients can be found from pharmacies like Clicks and Dis-Chem. You'll need epsom salts, sea salt, vegetable oil, essential oils, food colouring - if you wish to add colour to your bath salts - and a jar for storage.

If there is one thing that is truly taking over, it is women standing together to make it in business. SLAY Festival South Africa showed us how they are making things happen for women in South Africa.

Women Empowerment

First and foremost, SLAY Festival creates a space for women from all walks of life to gather and be inspired. SLAY Festival brought some of the most influential women to the event, this includes big names such as  Africa Director at Global Citizen Chebet Chikumbu, doctor and mental health advocate Dr. Khanya Khanyile, Managing Director for TRACE Southern Africa Valentine Gaudin, chef and entrepreneur Mogau Seshoene, actress Ayanda Thebethe, author and personal finance coach Mapalo Makhu, Head of Marketing for Google South Africa Asha Patel, Swiitch Beauty CEO Rabia Ghoor and many more who keep the footprint visible.

Dark and Lovely proudly showcased their natural hair range while teaching women how to style their hair using the best products in Mzansi. Dark and Lovely spoiled some guests a full glam station where they were able to get brand new styles from the talented stylists.

The ladies were also able to explore a Dark and Lovely range that introduces nourishing natural hair moisturisers, hair food with nutrients, shampoos and so much more goodies to give those coils, waves and crowns some extra love.

The crowd was also able to partake in the social campaign where they could win a full range of hair products. This was quite a hit!

Fashion & Accessories

Entrepreneurs came out to showcase and sell some beautiful garments and accessories inspired by Africa and the beauty of women. The festival had various stalls with detailed African print garments, bags, accessories and so much more.

The ladies did not disappoint as they came out in masses, dressed to perfection. Women of all kinds - from creatives and fashionistas to influencers and businesswomen - came out to support this initiative.

Skin Care Routine

Spring has sprung. Sneakers have been packed away and sandles, flip-flops and peep-toe heels are making a come back. This season, we need to keep our feet in tip-top condition. A great way to do this is with foot masks. There are a number of brands that offer foot masks. All you need to do is apply it before your beauty sleep, slip on socks you'll wake up with beautifully soft feet.

Cornrows are great whether you opt for thin, thick or added extensions. You can play around with different styles and patterns. However, if you work in a corporate environment, you can also opt for classic and simple styles. The only downside to cornrows is that they don't last for a very long time – depending on how well you maintain them, they can last for about two to three weeks, max. You'll need to take good care of them to maintain that amazing fresh hair look, and for stretching your hair.

Box Braids

Box braids are still a favourite in the city, not only as a protective hairstyle, but simply as a fabulous hairstyle! With box braids you can also pick the thickness you prefer. But don't go too thin, as this can damage your hairline. Always remember to be cautious with your precious hairline! On the other hand, braids that are too thick can strain your neck. Make sure you go to a good braider to avoid disappointments.

Twist Braids

Twist braids were quite popular a few years ago, but we think they should still be. Although they do not last as long as box braids do, they are still a great alternative for protective hairstyling. A huge upside to twist braids is that they take a relatively short time to plait. And, they are easier and quicker to remove when you're ready for a new hairstyleA hit on the streets right now is grey twist braids, passion twist, Senegalese twists and Nubian twists.

protective hairstyles 1

Yarn Braids

For those who dislike synthetic extensions, no worries. Try yarn braids instead. First, you need to find a good braider for this because you don't want to walk around looking homeless. When done right, yarn braids are a huge hit! Since the braiding is done with yarn wool, the hairstyle has a more natural look as opposed to the sometimes shiny finish you get with synthetic braids.

French Braid

The french braid is perfect if you have long hair and don't really want to go to the hair salon. If you're a DIY type of person, you will love this option. With the french braid, you can play around with the style, from plaiting one braid and two braids to plaiting it into a high bun, the options are endless! The sky is the limit when it comes to this hairstyle.

Faux Locks or Goddess Locks

Faux locks were a huge hit a couple of years ago. This style is best for people who want to have locks but don't want to commit to one particular hairstyle. The downside is that faux locks do tend to look fake. Like with most protective hairstyles, get referrals because your hair has to be done right to look good.

protective hairstyles 2

If you're looking for a long term hairstyle, book yourself an appointment at Jabu Stone and go have your locks done. The upside to locks is that you use your own hair so you don't have to buy extensions or yarn. You can even do your own locks at home provided you've watched a few YouTube videos for guidance.

Bantu Knots

Bantu knots are a throwback hairstyle which is making waves on the streets and is popular with celebrities at the moment. Sure, they're not going to work for every life situation but they're still a cool and funky protective hairstyle to give a try whenever life allows. Bantu knots are quite popular with ladies that have had their hair chemically straightened.

Although most people are now opting for options other than weaves, for various reasons, they're still a great protective hairstyle option. Having your hair neatly plaited underneath some great extensions, appeals to a significant percentage of women. Ring up Candi & Co to have your weave done by leading experts.

protective hairstyles 3

African Threading

African threading is a great go-to, because it helps to stretch hair. It also allows hair to dry without any heat application. You can definitely style this hairstyle to the nines by doing a beautiful up-do. Or use it before bed time to stretch your hair and give you that perfect curl texture.

Colourful Braids

Colourful braids will never go out of style as they are such a great statement piece that will turn heads everywhere you go. And to boot, it is also a great protective hairstyle. Don't tell us you haven't been tempted by the colourful hairstyles Sho Madjozi rocks so well.

Wigs & Wraps

These hairstyles might be too much admin for our busy lifestyles. Wigs and wraps make an easy and convenient alternative. Invest in a good wig and just slap it on. Or, channel your creative skills and wrap your hair under a cool turban or head-wrap. Some turbans and head-wraps come pre-wrapped so you can just put them on!

This can become quite the controversial topic for many but hey, wigs are there and people love them. The trend of wearing wigs is fast growing...to the extent that ladies are now even making their own. So I have taken the courtesy to share a few wig spots that will probably have exactly what you need.

The Culture Of Thy Wig

Society has really forgotten about the purpose of wigs because of the upcoming trends that are shaping and shifting the perception of many.

Here is a fun fact: Did you know that wigs used to be worn by men and women as a way of concealing boldness? Some wigs were made from sheep's wool and vegetable fibres.

Now that I'm done taking you way back, I can say that wigs have helped many get over huge hurdles like a disastrous 'bad hair day' or just simply waking up with a lack of confidence. Best believe that as I am writing this, I am going through my own fair share of 'snip snip' worthy hair issues and as serious as it sounds - there are far more serious things that I can think of that wigs can do, a boost of confidence for one.

As person who does not wear wigs myself, I can say the fascination really comes from my colleagues and well looking beyond the surface of seeing them as just a hat for warmth.

Let's check out some cool wig spots that will open your horizons...

Wigs spots

Bellazara Hair Boutique

Bellazara is all about making wigs that are natural and good quality in order to ensure that their philosophy is met, "Make top quality, beautiful hair available to every woman''.

They pride themselves in using quality hair to present a product that lives up to the customers expectation, using 100% human hair from as far as Mongolia, India, Peru and even Brazil. We all know that these countries have people will really good hair - climate and hair care is everything.

They also have hair extensions for those who are not so into wigs.

Wigs spots

Ubuhle Handmade

Ubuhle Handmade makes some of the best handmade wigs, made with free of chemical Cambodian or Malaysian hair.

You can get your favourite wig online and they deliver with ease. If you check out their website, you will notice that they have equipped you with all that you need to take care of you wig. A lot of ladies love Ubuhle, with thousands of followers - this has become quite a favourite for many.

Wigs spots

Breaking The Bounderies

Wigs have become more than just sticking to your natural colours like blonde, black, brunette, ginger, etc,. The fashion trends have really influenced the hair. We are seeing and more of colours as bright as pink, blue and even the ombre colours.

Not only are we seeing them on stage, but on a day to day too. It is no longer about wearing it for hiding what's there or not there, but about making a statement and starting a trend so why not try it out.

The start of a new year always brings about a series of fresh fashion and beauty trends. We are smack-bang in the middle of our summer season in Joburg. But there is definitely an air of change on the horizon. Being the eclectic city we are, quirky new hair trends are likely to take off quickly. Don't get left behind when the new year comes into full swing!

Style Trends

Hairstyles are expected to take serious notes from the past this season. Think the 1950's inspired micro-fringe, big 80's curls or the mid-naughties side-fringe (yes, it's back). Hair trends will be distinctively retro with updated twists. However, the blunt cut made popular in recent years, is also still featured on trend lists.

The blunt cut has been steadily adapted to both short and long styles. This year, expect even sleeker looking cuts as micro-layering adds even more balance to this daring style. Razor cuts on shorter styles will also amp up the precise aesthetic of the blunt cut style. Alternatively, long tresses are being styled in beachy waves and loose curls for the summer. The overall look is meant to give off the impression of deliberate, refined messiness. Soft layering for volume and texture will be utilised to create this effortless beachy style.

hair trends

Natural hair remains at the fore-front of styling trends for the year. Extensions and hair pieces are less favoured, while new stretching techniques are being employed to give natural hair longer length and greater body. High piled ponytails and pinned up looks are expected to become more creative as well. Chunky box braids will also stay a popular protective style.

Colour Trends

Colour variations have expanded for the upcoming year. Pastels, coppers, inky blacks, beach blondes, rich brunettes and natural grey's are all in.

Cotton-candy pink is the pastel colour of the moment. This versatile hue suits a range of complexions, but it is always advisable to consult a salon expert before selecting your colour. Also keep in mind that if your roots are naturally dark, you may have to bleach your hair before colouring it. But, if you have a trusted hair stylist who knows exactly how to treat and maintain your selected colour, go right ahead with this carnivalesque colour pop. Otherwise, indulge yourself and stop past JK Ginger Hair Salon in Sandton for a world class hair treatment.

Copper reds are expected to be a big thing in 2019, as are golden brunette tones. These darker shades are easy to maintain, but are nonetheless vibrant. If you are comfortable with a more natural look, opt for these colour variations. Embracing your naturally greying hair is also on the trend bill this year. If you haven't quite reached that stage of life yet, but love the grey shade, ash grey tinting is an option.

Beach blondes are right in line with the beach style look for the season. Not quite the icy white blonde of past seasons, this colouring has more streaky, sun-kissed highlights. On the opposite end of the spectrum, inky blue-black dyes give the blunt cut added sleek and edge.

2019 is the year to accessorise. Head bands of all kinds (sparkly, stretchy, glittery, etc.), as well as hair clips, pins and bobbies have made a definite resurgence. Lovisa has a great range of hair accessories, including jewelled tiaras! Be expressive and unique in your choice of accessories — especially if you aren't brave enough to try out the year's latest style and colour trends. Sometimes a new shiny hair pin is all you really need to feel brand new anyway.

Over the past four years, Parkhurst has gone through a massive revamp with many cool new places that have popped up. Here's what's new to the hood.

Parkhurst was developed as a suburb in 1904, but it wasn't until 1938 that a couple of shops sprung up. In the 70s Parkhurst got its first antique store and others followed suit until it was dubbed "antique alley". But it was only in the mid-90s that this lovely little suburb saw its first coffee shop. This opened the floodgates for restaurants, cafes and delis to take over the area.

From the hair salon, Hair Traffic, to our favourite bookstore, Ricks Books, Parkhurst has something for everyone. There is also an array of small boutique clothing stores for ladies, and fashion houses such as Paul Smith and Desray can be found here.

Head to Parkhurst hungry and you'll leave stuffed with the best food on the planet. On 4th Avenue you will find restaurants such as Craft (known for their stellar milkshakes), Bottega Cafe (pretty chilled place serving Italian food), and Coobs (owned by one of our favourite bistro chefs, James Diack). Also be sure to check out the pizzas at Jolly Roger - half price Wednesdays and Sundays are the best, even though it gets super packed.

Art And Antiques

Whether you are looking for that perfect painting to hang above your Bauhaus-inspired couch or wanting to add to your ceramic collection, Parkhurst has all of the above and more. There is a wide range of art galleries and dealers, such as the Cow Artworks and the Art Room, so you will most certainly find the quirk that tickles your fancy hidden somewhere along 4th Avenue.

Have you been to Parkhurst lately? Let us know if we've left out any of the latest additions to this ever-evolving neighbourhood. Make a journo's day and share this article on social media.

Whether you call it a head wrap, a scarf or simply a doek, the conversation around The #RespectTheDoek has sparked a new wave of interest in South Africa’s favourite headgear. Traditionally worn by women as a sign of respect for their culture and religion, the humble doek has become a statement related to African pride and identity in recent years.

Local celebrity and fashionista, Bonang Matheba was quoted saying, “wearing a doek gives an African woman a layer of confidence and strength. The headpiece is also associated with being an important expression of your heritage and it’s always fitting to grace traditional events wearing one.” On a more practical note, doeks have also become popular because it can be a quick fix for a bad hair day.

In Setswana, it is called a Tuku and is often worn at traditional wedding ceremonies. Most importantly the newlywed bride wears a Tuku as a sign of being accepted into that family and to show respect and humility to her new family.

In Nigerian culture, a Gele, as it is known, is a sign of social status and importance. It is, in essence, the Nigerian woman’s crown. In the Yoruba tradition a head wrap can be a sign of a woman’s marital status – if worn with the ends facing down it means a woman is married and if worn with the ends up, she is single.

The doek is even making an appearance on the international stage, with the likes of Erykah Badu, Alicia Keyes and fashion stylist, Olori Swank sporting doeks at red carpet events. Which is unsurprising, given the garment’s versatility and cultural link to all things African.

From Hollywood to Johannesburg, wherever and whichever way you wear one, the doek is here to stay. #RespecttheDoek

Are you sporting a doek? Tell us about your favourite styles and fabrics… we love to hear from you.
