Kaylee's Eatery opened its doors in early 2019, becoming one of the only fully plant-based restaurants situated in the quiet East Rand. Situated just next door to the epic Comic Warehouse in Bedfordview, Kaylee's provides vegans of the East with their fill of tasty breakfasts, burgers, salad bowls and scrumptious desserts (their decadent chocolate brownie served with dairy-free ice cream is legendary among vegan sweet tooths). Kaylee's food motto is all about feasting to your heart's desire, as all their ingredients are cruelty-free and kind to the earth. So the next time you feel a hankering for a tasty vegan burger, sandwich or waffle coming along, check out Kaylee's Eatery for a delicious, guilt-free feast.
As we entered level 3 at the start of June, we received the excellent news that our favourite vegan hangout would be open again! Kaylee's is now offering walk ins, collections and delivery through Uber Eats. The menu has been compressed somewhat to facilitate contactless delivery. However, if you prefer to visit them in person, you can rest assured that the restaurant is fully COVID-19 compliant, safe and ready to welcome you back. Pop in to get a taste of their special blend almond and oat milk coffees, smoothies, wine, whiskey, beers and wholesome vegan meals.
Kaylee's updated trading hours are as follows:
Kaylee's all day breakfasts offer the ultimate plant-based indulgence. Thankfully, their new menu features a great selection of these tasty and energising breakfasts. Our top pick is the Breakfast Burrito - tofu scramble, roast tomato, salsa, black beans, vegan cheese, spinach, red onion and avocado sandwiched in a tortilla wrap. This is the kind of meal you could wharf down for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Plus, it's loaded with healthy proteins and fibre, so you can feel good about what you are putting into your body.
As the season grows colder, you will probably crave warming, hearty dishes. Luckily, Kaylee's Eatery is here to see us through the chilly winter with their hot and hearty vegan meals. We love their Red Pimento and Blush Tomato Pasta. Made with red pepper, garlic and blush tomatoes, served atop linguini, fresh basil and toasted pine nuts, this winter warmer is sure to satisfy your deepest cravings.
When last did you indulge in a good gourmet milkshake? Kaylee's shakes are all made from a coconut base so you can tuck in without any worry of triggering your allergies or stepping outside of your strict vegan lifestyle. Take your pick from an Oreo, Strawberry, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Chocolate Brownie or Coffee shake. Paired with one of Kaylee's Beyond Burgers, this is vegan 'junk' food at its very best.
Now that you've got a taste of what Kaylee's has on offer, you're probably wanting to order from them. You can call them on 011 524 7603 to place your order for collection. Alternatively, download the Uber Eats app and order your Kaylee's meal for delivery. You can also visit the restaurant in person, but please do remember to wear your cloth face mask and maintain a good physical distance from others at all times.

Most of us know Mike's Kitchen as a well-established family restaurant chain. However, their branch in Parktown has a little more history to it. The building, known as Eikenlaan, was completed in 1905 for photographer and land developer, James Goch. Later, the mansion was sold to become the Ennsimore Residential Hotel. Fast forward to 1978, the building was under threat of demolition to make way for the M1 motorway. In stepped the management of Mike's Kitchen and the Parktown Heritage Trust to save this historic landmark. With 12,000 public and media signatures, they managed to save the building, transforming it into the familiar family-friendly restaurant it is today.
Today, Mike's Kitchen Parktown remains one of only two Randlord Mansions, which can be viewed freely by the public. It also still houses the original stained glass windows, high pressed ceilings and balustrade. Common myth says that the mansion may be haunted, which draws in as many visitors as the generous menu. If you have time to spare over the holidays, bring yourself and the kids for a bite to eat. It's the perfect spot for late breakfast, tea or even a special family dinner.
One of the highlights of my university experience was brunching at Mike's Kitchen Parktown with friends. Taking ourselves on a short 'adventure' from Braamfontein to Parktown, this was a test of our new-found adulthood. Now, I must disclaim that Mike's Kitchen Parktown is almost always packed to the brim. If you want to avoid a lengthy wait at the bar for a table (and a serious struggle for parking), book in advance! You can choose to sit inside the old heritage building, but we preferred the luscious outdoor setting. Under the shade of trees, with the smell of blossoms in the air, this place hearkens back to its heydays of croquette on the lawn and afternoon teas.
The staff at Mike's are abundantly friendly and will often make time for a quick chat in between taking down orders. While their breakfast menu has changed slightly since my days of 'adventure', they still offer all the good old classics, from Eggs Benedict served with a choice of hickory ham, bacon or salmon, to a hearty South African brekkie of eggs, bacon, boerewors, a burger patty, mushrooms, grilled tomato and toast. They also serve vegetarian options and delicious bowls of oats for the health conscious. Served with a warming coffee or cheeky Mimosa, this is brunch at its very best.
The remainder of the Mike's Kitchen menu is too extensive to list here. However, I will mention their signature hamburgers and boozy shakes. Mike's burgers are hearty and packed with flavour. Choose your patty from a selection of pure beef, falafel, soya, chicken breast or lamb. You can then keep it simple with a Classic Burger or go all out with their Jawbreaker - two patties, served with cheddar and mozzarella slices, onion, tomato, gherkins, avo, lettuce, bacon and topped with three golden onion rings!
What goes better with a messy hamburger than a thick, sweet milkshake? A boozy concoction of ice cream and spirits, of course! Inspired by traditional South African desserts and drinks, these milkshakes are a must-try. I recommend the Loslyf Melktert - a vanilla milkshake with a kick of vodka and Mike's secret milktart ingredients.
Visit the Mike's Kitchen Parktown website for more information about their heritage and menu offerings.

Needless to say, Husdons The Burger Joint offers specialty crafted burgers that are about as good as it gets. Burger options include beef, chicken and vegan. The patties for any of their burger options can be swapped for another of these choices. The chicken and beef patties are both made from free range meat, a fact evident in the taste. With over 13 burgers on their menu, there are simply too many to mention individually. So we'll just mention our favourites. The Bacon Jam, with a beef patty, bacon jam, cheddar, dusted onions and rocket is simply divine. But we're hard pressed to not go for The Player, with a beef patty loaded to the max with streaky bacon, avo and feta. Chilli lovers will love the Wise Guy, stuffed with a beef patty, sweet pepper relish, jalapeño, rocket and chipotle chilli paste.
We can't have burgers without a thick and luscious milkshake to finish things off. Luckily for us, Hudsons offers a total of ten such milkshakes. These are Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Oreo, Bar One, Chocolate Brownie, Cookie Monster, Salted Caramel Popcorn, Strawberry Candyfloss, Nutella Waffle and Vegan Oreo milkshakes. Not only are these deliciously creamy and decadent, but they are also the size of a small child. Unfortunately our top choices, the Nutella Waffle and Cookie Monster, are only available in large. Which simply wouldn't do, as we wanted to try as much of the food as possible and not fill up on drinks. But we couldn't resist and tried the Strawberry Candyfloss milkshake, which was gloriously thick, creamy and indulgent, loaded with a cloud of candy floss, dusted with rainbow sprinkles and finished with a frozen strawberry.
Side dishes can make or break a meal. With sides like Loaded Fries, Avo Fries, Onion Rings, Disco Fries and Truffle Cheese Fries, the meal was certainly made. In fact, we recommend getting a few sides with your appetizers and mains. Just because they are that good. Our favourite of the sides were definitely the Avo Fries. What is that, you ask? Well it's avocado slivers battered in bread crumbs, deep fried and served with sweet and spicy chilli sauce. We don't think we'll ever eat avocado any other way ever again. Yes, it was that amazing!
If the ridiculous burgers, spectacular milkshakes and unique side dishes weren't enough, Hudsons also offers an array of what we can only call Bro Food. These include items like pizza, nachos, ribs, wings, steak, tacos and sliders. And while it may be perfect for boy's night, it's also sublime for the ladies. The Three Little Pigs pizza is certain to delight all diners. It's topped with pulled pork, crispy bacon and pepperoni. And who could resist The Surfer? With BBQ pulled chicken, caramelised onion, sour cream, garlic, rosemary and spring onion, we couldn't. For a lighter meal, try their Bacon Wrapped Poppers, Jalapeño Mac 'n Cheese Croquettes or one of the mouthwatering salads.
Vegan diners will adore the plentiful vegan options at this joint. Hudsons has a range of vegan meals, including appetisers, sides, mains, desserts and even a milkshake. The Panko Crumbed Wings with vacon bits, vegan garlic mayo, sriracha and spring onions is a definite must try. Follow this with a Falafel Taco, Vacon Nachos, any one of the six vegan burgers or one of the three vegan pizzas. Alternatively, swap out the patty of any of the regular burgers with a Beyond Meat Patty for just *R35. We love The Influencer Burger, with a Cajun crumbed schnitzel, rocket, vegan mayo and mozzarella, tomato, grilled pineapple, cabbage and pickles. This is paired perfectly with the Vegan Oreo Milkshake. Finish your meal with the Vegan Matcha Ice Cream. To boot, Hudsons offers half price on all vegan mains every Monday.
While this joint has many beer, whiskey, wine and hot drink choices, we can't resist a crafted cocktail every now and then. The Berry Press (Beefeater Pink Gin, sweet & sour, berries and soda) and The Pink Lady (Whitley Neill Gin with pink tonic and candyfloss) are truly Instagram worthy. But we adore The Leopard (Bains, lime, triple sec, vanilla syrup and soda). Or craft your own gin and tonic, by pairing your favourite gin with your choice of tonic and top it off with your own selection of fruit.
