What Is It?

The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation invite you to join them on a walking tour of the grand Glenshiel mansion in Westcliff. In 1908, Sir William and Lady Dalrymple commissioned Herbert Baker to design a home high on the Westcliff ridge. Baker and his partner Fleming’s response was Glenshiel, an imposing butterfly-wing residence. With palatial stables, a swimming pool and tennis courts, this home was the first of its kind.

Come and admire the interior wood panelling, the grand hall and the beautiful rose garden at Glenshiel Mansion. The tour starts at the Ridge School (originally the Woolsack and home of Sir Aubrey Woolls-Sampson) which has fine views south, and then proceeds to Glenshiel. You will also hear about the Schumacher residence and Pallinghurst, now the Hope School, from a vantage point on the hill overlooking views down towards Zoo Lake. The tour party will then proceed to The Stables, a house which has evolved with time from housing horses to some much more distinguished residence.

Don't miss this journey back in time. There are a maximum of 50 spaces available on the tour, so book your tickets as soon as possible!

What Is It?

Christmas has come a little early this year. Perfect for all your festive feasting and gift shopping, you'll find the beautiful and much-anticipated Glenshiel Christmas Fair at the magnificent gardens atop the Westcliff Ridge. Not only will you enjoy an afternoon strolling through a collection of craft stalls, but you'll also have the opportunity to admire the lovely Glenshiel grounds.

Each year, over 70 small business owners set up stalls in these beautiful surroundings to showcase their carefully chosen products. Stall holders come from far and wide to offer Joburg some of the most stylish and on-trend items, only seen on the pages of local style and fashion magazines.

The Glenshiel Christmas Fair is not your ‘everyday’ market. You can expect luxury offerings such as beautifully crafted bags; shoes and belts; gorgeous linens and jewellery; bespoke stationery and handcrafted Christmas decorations; stunning imported toiletries and cosmetics; delicious cakes, cookies and crackers; as well as the latest fashion must haves for ladies, men and children.

After the success of the exclusive preview evening last year, the Glenshiel Christmas Fair is continuing with this initiative for guests wanting to escape the crowds this festive season. Spend the weekend browsing the market, indulging in cuisine from the various food stalls under the stars and enjoying the melodic entertainment.

The preview evening takes place on Thursday, 31 October 2019 from 17:00 and tickets are available at Quicket.

Meet with friends under the Jacarandas while taking in the magnificent gardens overlooking the leafy suburbs of Parkview, Zoo Lake and beyond. Catch up over a delicious lunch and glass of crisp wine or beautifully crafted gin as the little ones enjoy the children’s activity area.

The Fair isn’t just about shopping. It's also about making a difference. All profits raised from the event are utilised by St John South Africa, to further the work of its various community projects. This year, all funds are going towards the provision of community health work and first aid training aboard the two internationally renowned ‘Phelophepa’* Health Care Trains, as well as the creation of ‘health hubs’ in the rural towns that St John, along with the two trains, visit during the year.
