Kaylee's Eatery

This Bedfordview eatery has become an over night sensation. With their yummy bowls, Beyond Meat burgers, all day breakfasts, open sandwiches and delightful desserts, we are not surprised. But, of course, they make it to this list because of their vegan milkshakes. At the time of writing, Kaylee's had five gourmet shakes on their menu; Oreo, Coffee Shake, Chocolate Brownie, Strawberry and Peanut Butter. All are fantastic in their own right, but we have a soft spot for the classic Strawberry, made with a coconut base and fresh strawberries.

The Fussy Vegan

This eatery is a hidden gem tucked away behind a fuel station in Blairgowrie. They have become the popular choice for their amazing freshly prepared food, pre-packed food and vegan snacks. But if you're in the mood for something a little more filling and much more hearty, they make some of the best Mac and Cheese, wheat pasta in cashew cheese sauce with seitan bacon bits. And better yet, they serve this in a burrito. That's right, a macaroni and cheese burrito. Can you think of anything more glutenous yet completely worth it? We can't.

Are you looking for vegan-friendly restaurants in and around Johannesburg? Then you are in luck! Come with us as we take a trip around to town to introduce you to some of the coolest vegan hangouts in town.

The Greenside Café

Greenside Café is a vegetarian and vegan haven dedicated to healthier eating! Choose from a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes from pizzas and pastas, to stir-fry along with freshly squeezed, seasonal fruit juices. Their Greenside ‘Bacon’ Pizza (crispy tofu bacon with black mushrooms, onions, tomato and cashew cream on a homemade sourdough base) sounds delicious! Or, if you are not in the mood for pizza, try their Brown Rice and Tofu Stir-Fry (with vegetables and Greenside parmesan).

The Fussy Vegan

Looking for some good modern vegan cuisine to tickle your taste buds, but it needs to be vegan-friendly? Then make a stop at the Fussy Vegan and try out their Crispy BBQ Tofu (crispy strips of tofu served with mixed veggies in an Asian BBQ sauce)! Or try some of their modern-style burgers, bowls, and sandwiches. The Fussy Vegan is by far one of our favourite vegan-friendly restaurants in Joburg.

Vegan-Friendly Restaurants

The Red Chamber

For Chinese food with vegan/vegetarian alternatives, stop by the Red Chamber for something delicious (and slightly more expensive)! Their cucumber-based Tiger Salad is recommended from their menu! Feeling peckish? Then try the tasty Vegetable Spring Rolls. Or, if you are looking for a more substantial meal, see their vegetarian/vegan dishes in the Health corner of their menu. Order Braised Tofu with Chinese Shiitake Mushroom!

Free Food

Check out this vegan spot that has opened out in Birnam! Visit their shop and stock up on some delicious vegan food products from meals, vegan burgers, to cheese and chocolates. Or rather make a stop and order a take-out from their specials board! There is a new menu every week, packed with freshly prepared salads, stir-fries, wheat/gluten free pizzas, curries and stews! A must-try is their fantastic vegan-friendly ice cream!

Tasha’s

Tasha's offers you a nice selection of vegan/vegetarian dishes. To start off your day with a healthy breakfast, why not try the Granny Smith (rolled oats, pumpkin seeds, dried banana, dried mango, dried apple and shredded coconut soaked in apple juice topped with yoghurt [leave this out to make it vegan] and fresh grated apple)? Or order the Wild Mushroom Pasta (wild mushrooms with parsley, garlic, lemon ... just ask them to leave out the parmesan shavings) for lunch?

Kung-Fu Kitchen

Visit Kung-Fu Kitchen and indulge in some delectable Chinese food and best of all, sushi! Veggie soup, veggie spring rolls, veggie Chop Suey, Chow Mein or Chow Faan, they definitely have a veggie choice for every dish that they serve! And if you are looking for veggie sushi, then look no further! Whether you are craving California Rolls, Hand Rolls, Maki, or a fashion Sandwich – there is a veggie option for you!

The Chickpea Avo Wrap sounds like a winner – chickpea stew, avocado, fresh lettuce, spring onion and coriander!

Col’ Cacchio

From pizza to pasta, there is sure to be a good selection of vegetarian/vegan options available at Col’Cacchio’s! Mexican Fresh

A lekker vegan-friendly restaurant in Joburg is Mexican Fresh. If it's Mexican food you want, it's Mexican food you'll get! Mexican Fresh has a selection of vegetarian and vegan options, so you don’t have to miss out on eating the good stuff! The Grilled Veg Burrito sounds like quite the mouthful! Grilled peppers, sweet corn, chopped broccoli and cauliflower, onions, beans, cheese (can be removed if you ask), lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream all wrapped up in a thin burrito! And you can add a little more bite to your meal by asking for extra chilli.

Leafy Greens Café
