The Eastgate 'Barraca'

Mozambik's story began 15 years ago when Brett Michielin and Ryan Stewart joined forces to chase their dream of opening a chain of family restaurants. Expanding from their first outlet in Balito to 15 national stores, Mozambik has become a firm Joburg favourite. They bring diners authentic Mozambican flavours and proud national dishes at all their 'barracas' or huts. Boasting a family-friendly atmosphere and tons of fun for the kids, Mozambik is the perfect place to chill out on a Saturday afternoon.

Mozambik at Eastgate Mall opened in late 2017. It has since made a name for itself as the best Afro-Porto fusion restaurant in Joburg East, with another branch situated in Linksfield. The Eastgate branch sits right at the entrance to the impressive food court. It welcomes you in, tempting your taste buds with the scents of roasting garlic, peri-peri and flame grilled seafood. The children's play area can also be seen from the parking, so expect a sudden tug from the kids as they dash off to explore.

Mozambik

Chef Brett has developed the distinctive Mozambik flavours through tried and tested methods. From saucy bastes to dry rubs and signature cocktails, Mozambik's menu is unlike any other. However, each branch has their own specialties and personalised decor. Eastgate's Mozambik is laid back and breezy. The glass sliding doors allow bright sunshine and fresh air in during the daytime. At night, the outdoor deck is lit up in soft light, while the interior is transformed to look like a Mozambican seaside casa. Let your worries glide over you as you leisurely sip a cocktail and dream of ocean views.

Super Specials

Mozambik offers monthly deals on their most popular dishes, including the Seafood Platter for 1, Chicken and Calamari, Rump Steak and kiddies meals. Bring the little ones along on a Monday for a free meal. If they are under the age of 12 and accompanied by two adults, kids can eat for free all day long. The kiddies menu features Mozambican classics made palatable for sensitive tummies. Chicken Strips, BBQ Riblets, Crumbed Calamari, Prawn Spears and Fish Fingers will have the kids munching away happily.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are date night at Mozambik. Bring your sweetheart along for a magical evening. You can order any two main meals for only *R250. Options include lightly grilled Hake, Chicken Espetada, Port Steak and Chicken or Vegetable Curry. Served with your choice of carb, and one Stella Artois or Brutal Fruit for each of you. What better way could there be to impress your beloved?

Veggie Heaven

While Mozambik's menu is meat-dominant, they have begun introducing a couple of tasty vegetarian dishes. Recognising that vegetarianism is much more than a diet fad, Chef Brett has unleashed his creative side in the kitchen. In honour of World Vegetarian Day on 1 October, Mozambik launched their new Jack Fruit Espetada! Jack Fruit is high in nutrients and is often referred to as the 'vegetarian steak'. Enjoy yours skewered and char-grilled or deep fried. Served with a medley of stir-fried veg, potato chips and Mozambik's famous peri-peri sauce, this is the ultimate vegetarian indulgence.

Not a fan of jack fruit? No worries. Mozambik has two staple vegetarian dishes on the menu - Mozambican Vegetable Curry and Moz Bolo de Batata (sweet potato flatbread). Packed with flavour, these dishes paired together will easily make you forget about meat all together.

Mozambik

Jack Fruit Espetada

Now for the drinks. Mozambik offers an array of wines and shooters, but it is their cocktails and party jugs which really have guests coming back for more. If you try only one, let it be the R&R jug to share. A Mozambican specialty often served at sunset on the beach, this Tipo Tinto and Sparletta Sparberry mix is delightful and refreshing. Even if you have never crossed the border to the land of sunshine and sangria, Mozambik Eastgate will have you longing for that Mozambican vibe in no time.

The KitKat Chocolatory Pop-Up Store Is Coming To Joburg!

For the first time in Africa, Nestlé  KitKat will be launching their deliciously divine KitKat Chocolatory, a unique pop-up store that gives chocoholics the opportunity to create personalised, handcrafted KitKats. From 24 November 2018 for four weeks, Nestlé  KitKat will be setting up shop at the Mall of Africa. Who's excited? Because we are!

The KitKat Chocolatory allows you to explore your creative side by conceptualising your own unique KitKat using the interesting and exclusive flavour combinations available. This exciting concept has been successful for Nestlé  KitKat around the globe, including in Japan, Australia, Canada, Malaysia and many others.

KitKat Chocolatory

How It Works

To create your own KitKat 'break' at the pop-up store, follow these four easy steps:

1. Which type of chocolate?

First, select your favourite Nestlé  KitKat — white or dark?

2. Choose your toppings

Then add up to THREE delicious toppings to your bar from their selection of 14 toppings. Included are zesty lemon pieces, caramelised hazelnut crocant, mint chips, strawberry pearls, caramel fudge, coconut, mixed berry fruit pieces, honeycomb, shortbread, tutti frutti, and more. There's something for everyone!

3. Personalise it!

Now you need to select a personalised pack and message. You even get to include a name. The pack selection offers five different designs with stunning photography of iconic South African landmarks and African animals. Take your pick from the Johannesburg skyline, the Orlando Towers, Table Mountain, our Big Five or a gifting option. Also, there are 16 different messages to choose from.

4. Take it home

The final step is to pay. Since your own personalised bar is handcrafted, there's about a 20-minute wait for it to be made. An SMS notification will tell you when it's ready for collection. Your creation will be handed to you in a gift bag with a gift card.

KitKat Chocolatory

And That's Not All!

As if all of this wasn't awesome enough, Nestlé  KitKat has three Special Edition chocolates that have been inspired by desserts, available at the pop-up store only. There's Milk Tart, Trifle and Black Forest. A limited number will be available each day.

Cedar Square

A stone's throw away from Fourways Mall, Cedar Square is a wonderland for the little ones. With downhill skiing, tubing and even snowboarding there's tons to do. On the ground floor, there is a massive play area filled with jungle gyms, soccer pitches and goalie posts and even a restaurant where the little ones can make their own pizzas. To be a kid at Cedar Square is something adults can envy. Speaking of adults, there's a lot of cool shops to check out while the kids do kids stuff. The play area is under supervision, and young adults play with the children and make sure that they do not scrape their knees or bump their heads during play time.

Clearwater Mall

With a dedicated play area right next to the food court, a frozen yoghurt parlour upstairs and a massive 3D cinema, Clearwater Mall is packed with fun stuff to do. Kids can run up and down, and climb and slide their way to happiness. You can keep an eye on the little ones as you enjoy one of the many fine restaurants that litter the massive food court... or maybe send them off to the cinema upstairs with popcorn money. Either way, they are sure in for a great time.

Greenstone Shopping Centre

Kids are super welcome at Greenstone Shopping Centre. With a designated play area, loads of cool gadget stores to check out and a Rush trampoline park... the sky is the limit. Jimmy Jungle's premier indoor adventure park is a must visit for the kiddies as well. There's also a bowling alley and a 3D cinema. The only thing left to do is let the children run wild while you sit back and enjoy a bingo session or a hearty meal at one of the many brilliant restaurants.

Northgate

Fancy some ice skating? Then head to Northgate and get carving on the ice. The little ones will have a ball as they race up and down the rink and learn a new skill or three. Right across the hall from the ice rink is one of the last decent gaming arcades to hang out at. From table soccer to Time Crisis III can be jammed at the arcade. There is a wide a selection of racing games too. Other than that, there's the cinema equipped with a super cool slushy machine... grape flavored slushy, anyone?

Remember that our “Top Picks” are not paid for and are compiled at the discretion of the journalist. We only write about what we love.

Situated on the first floor of The Zone @ Rosebank, with panoramic views over Joburg, Food @ The Zone invites moviegoers, shoppers and families to relax in an open-plan, self-service dining space with access to some of South Africa’s favourite fast-food vendors and sit-down restaurants. Take your pick from Panarotti’s, Calistos, Wakaberry, Sweets From Heaven, Jimmy’s Killer Prawns and Häagen-Dazs to name a few.

There's one fast-food outlet, in particular, that has got Joburg foodies and Mexican food fans talking…

The Chiapas Eat Mexican approach is that food served fast can still be freshly prepared and high-quality. They offer the convenience of quick service, where the time between ordering and payment is no longer than five minutes and the menu is simple with traditional favourites like burritos, burrito bowls, soft tacos, crispy tacos, nachos, and salads.

The concept is 'build your meal' with each ingredient displayed so you can choose your perfect combinations from salsas and fillings to bases.

Food is prepared on the spot at the serving counter but if you have a bit of time, the sit-down area is inviting and vibey. For quality fast food at its best come to Chiapas eat Mexican.

Salads

Life Grand Café

Life’s Grand Café’s salad bar is amazing enough to turn any die-hard carnivore into a veg lover (for one meal, at least). Here’s how it works: you get a base of lettuce, tomato and cucumber and can then pick four toppings. It’s always a tough choice deciding what to fill your bowl with. From beetroot and olives to veggie chips and Danish feta, there’s plenty to choose from. You can also add a protein to your salad if you like (for a bit extra).

Where: Waterfall Corner Mall, Corner of Maxwell and Woodmead Drives, Woodmead, Johannesburg.

Hyde Park Corner, Corner Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nicol Drive, Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Mall of the South, Corner Swartkoppies Road and Klipriver Drive, Aspen Hills Near South, Mulbarton, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Rockets Express

Rockets Express is also a build-your-own salad bar. You choose everything – base, toppings and dressing, but if you don’t want to make your own, they’ve got some options on the menu that have been thought out on your behalf. The Veg Loco, with grilled vegetables, cherry tomatoes, olives, feta, red onion and mixed peppers, dressed with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar sounds like the perfect pick if you ask us.

Where: 24 Central, Corner of Gwen Lane & Fredman Drive, Sandown, Sandton, Johannesburg.

Melrose Arch, Corner Corlett Drive and M1 Highway, Melrose, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

La Vie En Rose

La Vie En Rose is great for two reasons (okay, more, but we’re going with two for now): their lush, outdoorsy setting… and their salads. They’ve got a range of options, but the one that sticks out most (for us, anyway) would have to be the Bunny Hop, which is sweet oven-roasted butternut with Danish feta, avo, couscous, walnuts and honey mustard dressing. Yum!

Where: 60 5th Street (Killarney Country Club) Johannesburg , 2196

For more information, click here.

JB’s Corner

The menu at JB’s Corner really has something for everyone – and that goes for their salad department, too. From grain-free options to meaty delights and even a calamari salad, you’re certainly spoilt for choice here.We love Shoot The Breeze, which is your grain of choice (quinoa, please) with balsamic roasted butternut, feta, Parmesan shavings and avo. Just a warning: their salads are huge!

Where: 3 High Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Krunch

You don’t normally think of healthy foods when you think of a food court, but Krunch is an exception. This place screams health and their salads are nothing short of fab. You can design your own salad if you like… they have a fantastic range of options, including seared tuna, cottage cheese, sundried tomatoes and rare roast beef. Our top pick would have to be one of their pre-made salads – the Seared Salmon and Almond one, to be exact. It comes with baby spinach, cucumber, red onion, Danish feta, sundried tomatoes, seared salmon and roasted almonds.

Where: Food Court, Sandton City, Corner 5th and Maude Streets, Sandton, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Tashas

Tashas is one of those something-for-everyone places… and their salads definitely don’t fall short in this regard. From Thai beef options to Nicoise creations, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when choosing! May we suggest a salad? Okay, great! Have the Heirloom Halloumi – heirloom tomatoes, Middle Eastern spiced halloumi, fennel, cucumber, red onion, pomegranate, mint and pomegranate dressing.

Where: There are many Tashas branches, follow the link below for more info.

For more information, click here.

Thyme On Nicol

Thyme on Nicol is a great place to pop past when you’re in need of a healthy on-the-go lunch or want to sit down and eat a nourishing salad. They offer a wide range, including sashimi salads if you feel like sushi without the carbs. Our pick at this place has got to be the Salmon and Avo salad, which is smoked salmon and avo on Asian lettuce with red onion, sweet potato strings, capers and a lemon mustard dressing.

Where: Corner William Nicol and Republic Roads, Bryanston, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Salvationcafe

Situated in a stunning courtyard, Salvationcafe’s food offerings are drool-worthy. Pull up a chair and get ready for some tough choices. Do you pick the Tuna and Chickpea Salad or the Classic Ceasar? We'd go for the Citrus and Almond Salad, with peppers, cherry tomato, cucumber, fresh beans, spring onion and avo… with added free-range chicken.

Where: 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark, Johannesburg.

For more information, click here.

Kauai

Ever since Kauai revamped their look, feel and food offering, we just can’t seem to stay away from them! We love that you can customise your salads to suit your personal taste – pick a base, four fillings, crunchy topping, dressing and add a protein if you like. We like to make my own creation up, with house greens, rosa tomatoes, carrots, radishes, broccoli, seed mix, olive oil and a free-range boiled egg.

Where: There are plenty of Kauai branches, follow the link below for more information.

For more information, click here.

Doppio Zero

Doppio Zero has got plenty of options, from classic capreses to rump and rocket options… chances are whatever you’re in the mood for is already on the menu. The Prawn, Avo and Pawpaw salad is simply divine – served with grilled prawns, pawpaw, baby greens, avo, red onion and a red wine vinaigrette.

Where: There are plenty of Doppio Zero branches, follow the link below for more information.

Greenside Café

Greenside Café is a haven for salad lovers. This vegan restaurants serves up super-filling and well thought out healthy options. Check out their salad offerings – you won’t be sorry. The Wakame Seaweed Salad is a must-try… with rice noodles, tomatoes, carrot, beetroot, cucumber, gamasio and sesame oil, the gluten-free goodness is as tasty as it is nourishing.

Where: 34 Gleneagles Road, Greenside, Johannesburg.
