Sheer Makes A Comeback

If you've just bought a pair of opaque tights to see you through winter, we apologise. The 1980s-inspired sheer tight is back this season! While not totally practical, these tights do add a touch of sexy to almost any outfit. However, you don't have to stick to boring old black, because this winter trend has undergone a major modern update. Sheer red tights, polka dot tights and striped sheer stockings are what's "cool" at the moment. Get quirky with your winter look and throw on a pair with your favourite mini-skirt or winter dress.

Styling Tips:

Sheer tights are prone to ladder or rip. Make sure to invest in a good pair to avoid mishaps when pulling them on. If you aren't comfortable with wearing near-naked tights, invest in a sheer blouse instead. Go for a blouse with a cuffed peasant sleeve to emphasise the 80s aesthetic or a cute pussycat bow for added sweetness.

Where To Get It:

You should be able to get a good pair of sheer tights from a range of retailers this winter, including Woolworths, Edgars and Truworths. However, we adore this sheer polka dot blouse from Mr Price Clothing. It's a great way to ease yourself into the sheer look if you've never attempted it before. It's the perfect balance between classic chic and modern edgy.

winter fashion

If you've ever wanted to own a houndstooth coat or suit, now's the time to invest in one. While checkered patterns were in last winter, in 2020 you're likely to see fashion fundis turn towards the more classy houndstooth look. The great thing about purchasing a coat or suit in this pattern is that it's a classic. It's likely to stick around for at least another two seasons and even then it never really goes out of style. Longer length coats are still the go-to for this season as well, so avoid a close-fitting mid-waist fit and go for the asymmetrical look instead.

Styling Tips:

This classic pattern is both demure and bold, but it can be intimidating to style. If you're going to wear it from head to toe, stick to one set pattern. But if you're going for a more casual approach, brighten things up with a colourful blouse or skirt. If you are blessed with curves, throw on a wide belt with your coat to accentuate your waist rather than your hips.

Where To Get It:

You can choose to save or splurge here. Our save option is this houndstooth knit jersey by Telma from Superbalist. Warm and snug but super stylish, this would be a great winter wardrobe addition. If you have a little extra to spend on yourself, take a look at this houndstooth coat from Zara. It's classic, yet edgy with ample pocket space.

Faux Leather Trench Coat

The androgynous look is gaining more and more purchase in fashion circles, as gender norms shift to embrace fluidity. Winter is the ideal time to play around with your androgynous style and get more daring with your fashion choices. Invest in a faux or PU leather trench coat this winter to get started. The dramatic length of a trench coat may be difficult to navigate at first, but fashion is never much about comfort. Pretend that you're in the Matrix if you have to, but not in front of other people.

Styling Tips:

Brown and tan PU leather is the colour of the season, along with good old black. These colours are relatively easy to style, but try to stick with a less is more approach to ensure that the coat stands out as the centrepiece of your ensemble. Again, wear a belt if you are worried about looking bulky. If you're on the petite side, wear high heels to avoid disappearing underneath your coat.

Where To Get It:

Superbalist has three faux leather trench coat options to choose from. We personally prefer the understated pleather coat, but if you're all about high stakes fashion get yourself one of their vinyl patent PU trenches. This trench is available in jet black or neutral for only *R1 199.00. Pair your coat with a slick pair of shades and you'll look super cool (in this dimension or any other).

What You Need

Knitting can be a fun and rewarding hobby! With a few video tutorials, a few balls of wool and lots of practice, you'll be well on your way to making scarves, beanies, baby booties and much more. Once you get the hang of various patterns, the possibilities are endless. But for now, lets start with a few easy beginner-friendly knit projects to get you practicing. All you need are:

A Few Basics

So, you'll also need to know how to do various stitches. We have found some of the best knit tutorials for you to follow, practice and master before you get started.

woman knitting with blue wool

A Basic Scarf

To get you started with a basic knit, we suggest you start off with the garter stitch. What makes this easy for beginners is the fact that it's the same knit pattern over and over. This gives you the perfect opportunity to figure out how to hold the knitting needles, master the stitch and start making your very own scarf! Head to All About Ami for the full written tutorial, images and a helpful video to help you through crafting your first scarf.

A Winter Beanie

With winter on the horizon, what's the bet you're looking for a cosy beanie to keep you warm? Why not make your own from scratch with this tutorial from Utopia.org? There are pictures for you to view as well as step-by-step instructions you can follow. And don't worry, knitting a beanie is far easier than you think it is. It will take a little bit of trial and error, but once you get the pattern down to a fine art, it becomes easier. And if you're looking for the simplest way to make a beanie without knitting needles, here's how to make a loom knit beanie! We've tried and tested this, and it's super easy!

scarves knitted in orange, turquoise, purple and blue

A Knitted Headband

Another simple and oh-so easy project you can get started on is making your own knitted headband. It's a must-have winter accessory to add to your seasonal wardrobe. Utopia.org has another step-by-step written tutorial and images to help you make your own. But just watch out at the end of the instructions, there's a twist waiting which might be tricky. Don't have a circular needle like they suggested? Then why not use your hands and finger knit this beautiful turban headband by Simply Maggie?

A Patchwork Blanket

Creating your own woolly, cuddly and cosy blanket is a simple project to get you crafting and making something useful for the upcoming colder winter months! Since you have some time on your hands due to the lockdown, why not get started on a patchwork blanket? Basically, knit a bundle of "patches" or squares in various colours, then sew them together to make a beautiful blanket. One of the best tutorials that we've tried comes from WikiHow! Choose your yarn and size of knitting needles and get started! A quick tip: the larger your needles, the looser the knit will be and the quicker it'll be to make the various squares.

Cute Boot Cuffs

Winter is boot season, so why not accessorise your look with a pair of knitted cuffs to peek out from the top of your favourite pair? Not only are they cute, but they're super easy to make! Veronica Marie on YouTube has a chunky knit boot cuff video you can follow with your pair of knitting needles. And if you'd rather loom yourself a pair of boot cuffs, here's another YouTube tutorial by LoomaHat.com.

Winter Fashion

This winter, switch things up and add some character to your personal taste. Try out different textures, patterns, colours or colour blocking (this works with the right combination). Don't be afraid to push the boundaries or just simply break the rules.

Pattern Designs And Textures

Pattern designs have been coming and going and have inspired new trends. This is why traditional patterns, like polka dots and stripes, are the perfect go-to. They are timeless and never go out of style.

Don't shy away from playing around with ideas - an ankle high chino, polka dot top and tiny scarf go a long way. Gentlemen, you can also rock pattern designs and textures with confidence, just choose items that complements each other.

Quick tip: Pattern designs aren't just about clothes - think shoes and accessories, too.

Where to begin?

A Good Coat/Jacket

A life saving must-have item for winter is a good coat. Whether it's for ladies or gents, coats and jackets are necessary to keep away the winter chill. The best thing about coats and jackets is that you can dress it up or down and still look great.

Coats are also easy to experiment with. Simply add a pop of colour and you are good to go or mix and match different colours.

Quick tip: Match two items together, either a jacket and scarf or a coat and bag or shoes.
