The term "brasserie" is of French origin, meaning a restaurant with a relaxed, open setting, usually serving beer with simple, wholesome meals. Not often a term we hear when referring to Joburg restaurants, brasseries are few and far between in this city of bistros, gastro pubs and restaurant chains. That's why we had to look a little further out into the lush expanses of the Cradle of Humankind to find exactly what we were looking for. Little surprise, what we came across were a number of stunning wedding venues, including Toadbury Hall Country Hotel. Here is where we found a true hidden gem in the form of a country-style, open deck brasserie named WildWood Restaurant.

WildWood

Close To The City, Out In The Country

WildWood Restaurant boasts a stunning view of the Crocodile River from their deck. This is the perfect spot to spend a leisurely afternoon with family and friends. There is also tons of open space for the kids to play, so you need not worry about keeping them entertained. The interior is elegant without being pretentious. With a flaming fireplace adjacent to the bar, this is an ideal winter evening retreat. However, WildWood Restaurant flourishes all year round, offering their patrons a divine selection of Mediterranean-inspired meals. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, the restaurant caters to all palates, including the little ones who have their own separate menu.

The generous, classic breakfasts at WildWood are famed for their abundant flavour and variety of choices. Take your pick from a standard English breakfast with all the trimmings - eggs (scrambled, fried or poached), crisped bacon, tomato, pork sausages, black pudding and baked beans. Alternatively, you can opt for something a little lighter like the smashed avo toast or an omelette. We have it on good authority that WildWood's Eggs Benedict is pretty good too, so whatever you choose to tuck into should leave you satisfied and ready to tackle the day ahead.

Seeing as it is first and foremost a family-friendly venue, WildWood offers an array of sharing platters on their lunch menu, featuring firm favourites such as olives, roasted peppers, tzatziki, caramelised onions and dolmades. Complete your lunch with freshly baked ciabatta and a crisp bottle of chilled white wine. Not a wine drinker? Sample one of the restaurant's on tap craft beers supplied by Black Horse Brewery. With the stunning surrounds and on hand service, it couldn't get much better than this.

WildWood

Picnic Pleasure

When last have you been on a picnic? Whether it's with your special someone or the whole brood, sharing a meal outdoors brings people closer. WildWood Restaurant is all about creating the best outdoor dining experience for you and your loved ones. Providing the decor, food and setup, they bring the magic of the kitchen right out onto the banks of the Crocodile River for you to enjoy in the peace and quiet. With five private picnic areas, you can rest assured that your romantic date, birthday party or family gathering will go undisturbed.

There are two gourmet picnic menus to choose from. One for the little ones, which includes mini beef burgers with potato chips, chicken strips with sweet barbecue mayo, mini cheese and biscuits, dry wors, mini fruit skewers, chocolate brownies, Danish pastries and mini fruit juices. A balance of sweet and savoury, this spread should impress even the fussiest of eaters.

The adult gourmet picnic is just as enticing. With chicken liver pate with cranberry and apple jelly, fresh ciabatta, roast beef with honey and mustard, lamb meatballs with tzatziki, yoghurt roast chicken, baby beef shawarma, roasted pumpkin, feta and chickpea salad, potato salad with mint and parsley, vegetable and herb quiche, fruit kebabs with a passion fruit coulis, chocolate brownies and a cheese platter with savoury biscuits!

Picnic baskets must be pre-ordered from the restaurant to accommodate for your number of guests and dietary requirements. Place your order here.

WildWood

Fairy Light Weddings

WildWood understands that some couples don't want a large, lavish wedding. Host an intimate picnic wedding for you and a close group of friends and family. But not just any old picnic, of course! Picture a Bedouin stretch tent, garden tables, director chairs and picnic blankets with cushions to bring spectacular style to your wedding. All this is partnered with decadent picnic-style cuisine served in quaint wicker baskets to complete your outdoor wedding reception. If you choose to have your picnic-style reception by moonlight, WildWood Restaurant will throw in streams of pretty fairy lights to enhance the romantic atmosphere. It's sure to be unforgettable.

Harpers Restaurant and Coffee Shop opened its doors at Eastgate Mall in 2017. However, what many of this cultured cafe's loyal patrons don't know is that the restaurant was first established in 1979. Bringing Joburg foodies top quality meals and service, Harpers has become a firm favourite among coffee and cake lovers. However, this chic eatery is not only about the sweet side of life. They also cater to meat lovers, vegetarians, Mexican food fans and Italian pasta aficionados. Harpers also has a few special surprises for the kids, so the whole family can come along for breakfast, lunch or an early dinner.

Not Your Typical Mall Restaurant

Harpers is not what we would call a mall restaurant. Tucked far away from the busy food court, this cafe is worthy of being called Bedfordview's favourite coffee shop. With stylish gold fixtures, bold green prints and elegant lighting, Harpers is far from the average. It almost seems transported from a posh Rosebank hotel, with its display of perfectly piped cakes and pastries. Being quite far removed from the action of the mall, the restaurant is also lovely and quiet. The only downside is that the restaurant looks directly out onto the basement parking, but this can easily be ignored. Harpers is otherwise the perfect spot to catch up with friends or take your special someone on a brunch date.

Harpers

As Harpers is first and foremost a coffee shop and cakery, we recommend that you stop by the display stand on your way in. Even if you are visiting with the intention of having a sit down meal, you can always pick up something sweet for later. From delightful gingerbread men and ladies, to macarons and fruit carrot cake, Harpers is sure to have a dessert to delight your palate.

Harpers is also well known for their opulent high tea, offering a delicious selection of sandwiches, crumpets, scones, petit fours and cakes. Served with your selection of Twinings floral teas, this is high tea perfection.

Midsummer Specials

In honour of the impending summer season, Harpers has made an exciting announcement. They are now open on weeknights until 20:00. So, rather than slave over the hot stove at home, why not bring the family out for a luxurious dining experience at Harpers? If you visit them between 18:00 - 20:00 on Monday to Thursday, you will receive a 25% discount on your bill!

The restaurant's menu is full of variety and features a number of cuisine influences. We recommend their signature Trinchado, tender cubes of beef fillet or succulent chicken in a creamy red wine and onion sauce, served with chips and lightly toasted ciabatta bread. Other favourites off the grill include the Beef Prego, Fillet of Hake and Grilled Beef Fillet. For something a little heartier, try the selection of curries. Their spin on classic Prawn Curry - spicy prawn curry cooked with peppers, onion, garlic, ginger and coconut milk - is fragrant and filling. It is served with basmati rice, tomato and onion sambal and poppadums. Yum!

Harpers

The kiddies can enjoy an array of scrumptious dishes too. Specially adapted for smaller tummies, Harpers kiddies pastas and toasties are perfect as a mid-week dinner treat. If your little one has a sophisticated palate, bring them to Harpers on their birthday. They can indulge in hot chocolate with chocolate cream, dipped flake and marshmallows or three scoops of ice cream with chocolate sauce, while you tuck into a more grown up dessert drink. Your three options are Irish Coffee - totted with either whiskey, rum, kahlua, Amarula Cream or Frangelico; Amarula Dream - Amarula, Horlicks and cream; or a Frangelico hot chocolate, perfect with a slice of creamy cheesecake.

Tea-Infused Cocktails

Sometimes you needed a little me time away from the kids. Spoil yourself with one of Harpers' signature cocktails or a refreshing G&T. The Admiral Grey is particularly popular - a cocktail invented to honour Admiral Grey, made with gin, cherry syrup, Campari, infused Earl Grey tea and tonic. If that doesn't float your boat, then try the Watermelon Basil Gin and Tonic - watermelon syrup with basil leaves and fresh lemon, topped with tonic water. This summery, peppery gin and tonic combo will have you relaxed and refreshed. Invite a few friends along for a tropical-inspired cocktail party without any of the fuss of cleaning up afterwards!

The Hidden Red Door

The Red Door Cafe opened its doors in January 2013. Starting out as nothing more than a corner coffee shop, this eclectic Edenvale eatery has grown into a neighbourhood favourite. However, you may have a hard time finding it. While it sits on the corner of a main street, The Red Door is well hidden. You may mistake it for a suburban home as you drive by. But, trust us, this is one Joburg cafe you won't want to pass by. Just keep an eye out for the tiny red motorcycle and you will know you have reached The Red Door.

The Red Door Cafe prides itself on being an alternative to restaurant franchises and takeout chains. It is Edenvale's answer to fast eating and impersonal service. This homely cafe features a warm fireplace, excellent Illy Arabica coffee and the freshest possible food. Their menu is also always changing according to seasonal ingredients, so you will never be bored. Following a Paleo, Banting or vegan diet? Not to worry, because The Red Door have introduced an array of scrumptious Paleo, Banting and vegan meals to the menu! However, you may kick that diet right out the window once you spot their famous pastries (nutella cruffins, almond and Ferrero Rocher croissants and delightful fudge), breads and cakes. Yum.

Red Door

Come and discover Edenvale's foodie Narnia behind the Red Door. It's another world all together. Throw in some free WIFI, and this corner coffee cafe is the closest thing to 'hip' in the suburb (well, besides the Kota Joe Roadhouse up the street). No more travelling hours to the northern side of Joburg - the East has its very own cool breakfast, brunch, coffee and cake spot.

The Tea Room

Looking for the perfect spot to host a baby shower, kitchen tea or birthday party? Look no further than the Red Door's private Tea Room. Seating up to 45 guests, this is the ideal place for a quaint gathering. There is no need to worry about catering either, as the Red Door offers tasty sweet or savoury platters. Think mini scones, muffins, sandwiches, quiche and even Banting friendly skewers. The Red Door will also help you decorate the Tea Room according to your desired theme. All you have to do is pitch up and have a good time!

The Tea Room

Let's travel to Havana!

The Red Door hosts Havana Nights on the last Friday of every month. Cuban sharing meals, cocktails and a whole bunch of fun is what you can expect. Blending Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisines, Havana Nights are a taste sensation. Come and dance your stresses away to live music performances. There is also plenty to drink, so please make sure you have a lift home!

Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates on Havana Nights events - facebook.com/RedDoorEdenvale.

AJ's In The Park is a family restaurant in Craighall, serving classic meals, with plenty to keep adults and kids entertained.

Location

Nestled in the quiet neighbourhood of Craighall Park, AJ's Restaurant (AJ's In The Park) is family friendly and also caters to sporting fanatics with a big screen TV to enjoy the live games. The restaurant hosts kids' events, so if you're planning to throw a birthday party, AJ's Restaurant is definitely the place to go. With their children's play area secured, you don't have to worry about safety. The best part is, the restaurant is located on the same premises as the Craighall Sports Club that has an outdoor field, so it's fun in the sun for everyone!

AJs Kids Area

Menu at AJ's Restaurant

Since the restaurant has a diverse offering, the menu covers all major foods you'd expect, from burgers that have tempted many returning customers, to pizzas that will have your mouth watering at first sight. I was invited to try out some of the menu options and the No. 1 Burger was recommended for being the most popular and super tasty. Imagine a burger with bacon, feta cheese and avocado ... don't your tastebuds just start jumping? The burger came with a side of chips, but you could opt for a side salad instead. The meal was absolutely satisfying and other customers that tried the burgers options had nothing but praise and compliments for the chef.

Ajs No1 Burger

Aside from the burgers, the restaurant is also popular for their Chicken Schnitzel. Picture a succulent 300g free range crumbed chicken fillet, created purely to please your tastebuds... Sounds delicious, right? Oh and what would the world be without pizza? After trying the California from AJ's wood-fried pizza oven, the Joburg team were full of happiness and laughs. The favourite was the California because like the burger, bacon, feta and avocado are always a killer combo! Other meals you can look forward to are their steaks, salads, kids' meals and platters - there's really something for everyone.

AJs Pizza

Drinks

For drinks, the restaurant has a fully stocked bar but for non-drinkers and kids, they have yummy milkshakes, fizzy drinks and spectacular hot beverages. I tried the Hot Chocolate which was absolutely amazing! You really can't get an impeccable hot chocolate like that just anywhere. A definite must-try on the beverage menu.
