Spekboom (Portulacaria Afra), also known as the Pork Bush or Elephant's Food, is an indigenous South African plant making big waves on the local conservation scene. An incredibly hardy plant, Spekboom is mainly found in the Eastern Cape. Flourishing in semi-arid conditions, this plant can live for up to 200 years and grow as tall as five metres.
However, the most exciting attribute of this leafy succulent is its ability to gobble up carbon dioxide to an extent that far surpasses any other plant species yet seen. In fact, Spekboom thicket is thought to be up to 10 times more effective at carbon fixing than tropical rain forests. Absorbing up to 10 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare per year, Spekboom is undoubtedly the wonder plant of the year.
In late 2019, the #Spekboom challenge overtook social media. Championed by farmers in the Eastern Cape, the challenge encourages all South Africans to grow their own Spekboom plants. Whether you uproot water guzzling plants from your garden in favour of the water-wise Spekboom or decorate your home with a few potted plants, the purpose of the #Spekboom challenge is to decrease carbon emissions across the country.
Fun fact: The Spekboom plant only requires 250 - 350ml of water per year to survive!
Growing your own Spekboom is as easy as breaking off a shoot of the plant and potting it in some well-drained soil. Ensure that your plant gets enough sunshine and it should maintain its bright green appearance for years to come.
However, even if you have a black thumb, this plant is almost impossible to kill. Spekboom can easily adapt to changing weather conditions, perfect for the unpredictable Joburg climate. In cool conditions, Spekboom photosynthesises like other plants, opening its stomata during the day to absorb carbon dioxide. During drier times, the plant has the ability to open its stomata at night, preventing water loss during the heat of the day. It is this nifty ability to absorb carbon dioxide even during the evenings that makes this plant so very special.
On Sunday, 02 February 2020, the City of Cape Town announced that it would commit to planting 5000 Spekboom in April of this year to coincide with National Climate Change Month and World Earth Day (22 April). Partnering with the Newlands Nursery, the city has pledged to plant shoots of the wonder plant at various spaces across Cape Town, hopefully encouraging residents to take up the #Spekboom challenge themselves.
Now, we wouldn't be good Joburgers if we didn't aim to outdo our Cape competitors. Let's band together in the run up to World Earth Day and take on the #Spekboom challenge. Here's where you can get your hands on this green gem in the city:
Two of Joburg's most popular shopping destinations, Sandton City and Eastgate Shopping Centre, will be hosting the 'Plant Your Love' activation in February. This initiative is all about taking on the #Spekboom challenge and showing the earth a little love during Valentine's month. Visit either of these malls for an informative talk by WWF on the wonders of the Spekboom plant between 13 - 15 February 2020. Plus, when you spend R350 or more at these malls you will receive your own Spekboom plant to take home.
Pop into your nearest Woolworths to get yourself a cute Spekboom pot plant. These are the perfect decor item for your home or city apartment, adding both a pop of natural colour and brain-boosting oxygen to your home.
Did you know that Spekboom is edible? A favourite snack of elephants, the leaves of this plant taste similar to zesty lemon and can be eaten by humans, too. Check out this mouthwatering Tomato and Spekboom Salad recipe to get started.
So there you have it, all you need to know about the humble Spekboom and its many fantastic properties. Are you ready to take on the #Spekboom challenge, Joburg?

Plaka is situated on the piazza at Eastgate Shopping Centre. Standing out starkly against a collection of fast food restaurants, Plaka is the home of Mediterranean eating at Eastgate. Newly refurbished to offer patrons an even more authentic taste of the Greek islands, Plaka Eastgate is spacious and inviting. With shades of crisp white and ocean blue, their decor immediately transports you to another place. This is the ideal spot for a quiet Sunday lunch with the family, date night or a celebratory dinner.
Plaka has been delivering authentic Greek cuisine to Joburg foodies for over 26 years. Their menu is generous, offering a variety of traditional meze, fish dishes and vegetarian dips. Made from the freshest ingredients, their food is simple yet delicious. Having eaten our way through the menu, we recommend the meze platter for two, a hearty feast of pita bread, assorted dips, falafel, handcut chips, tomato salad and grilled halloumi. Paired with a chilled glass of white wine, this is more than satisfying. Sit and talk for hours over this meal with loved ones for a true Greek dining experience.
Plaka's dessert menu is equally enticing, featuring classic Greek pastries, ice cream and rich, creamy yoghurt served with crushed nuts and honey. The Eastgate branch also treats their patrons to a special palate cleanser in between mains and dessert - slices of chilled watermelon sprinkled with cinnamon. Overall, their service is welcoming and attentive. It is definitely worth a visit!
Once you have devoured your meal and thoroughly soaked up the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere at Plaka Eastgate, pop into their on-site deli. Here, you will find the best imported products to make your own Greek feast at home, along with a selection of home-made meals, biscuits and other sweet delights. It's this little touch of homeliness that sets Plaka apart from the rest.
There are two other Plaka venues in Gauteng to visit on your great Greek eating adventures. Click here for more information.
Just a few blocks away from Plaka at Eastgate you will find its rival, Mythos. Located on the square at Bedford Centre, this authentic Greek restaurant recently reopened its doors to welcome in patrons, old and new. Their newly refurbished decor is evocative of a Mediterranean palace, with opulent drapery, generous seating and romantic lighting.
Mythos first opened in 2006 and has since expanded across Joburg at various venues. However, their branch at Bedford Centre has always maintained an air of fine dining without sacrificing a family-friendly atmosphere. There is almost always a celebration to be had at Mythos, such as an anniversary dinner or their 'Big Fat Greek Evenings' which take place on the last Saturday of every month. Complete with a fantastic feast, live music and dancing, performances from trained belly dancers and breaking of the plates, Mythos offers their guests far more than just a dining experience. The warmth of family and friends exudes in everything they do.
But, speaking of the food, Mythos has both a set menu and main menu. Featuring an array of traditional salads, dips, sides and main meals, there is no shortage of Greek flavour here. Mythos prides itself on using only the best imported ingredients, evident in the flavours and quality of their food. And, like any good Greek restaurant, sharing is the name of the game here. The meze platter for two includes keftethes, fillet souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, prawns, calamari, yiro, peri-peri chicken livers, tzatziki, taramosalata and pita bread. While quite protein heavy, this platter can easily be paired with a village Greek salad to find its perfect balance.
After a filling Greek feast, what could you possibly have room leftover for? Gelato, of course! Mythos at Bedford Centre boasts an enticing gelato counter, stocked with a variety of flavours. We say give them all a try to find your favourite. From chocolate hazelnut to pistachio, funfetti and even tiramisu flavours, they have something to soothe any sweet tooth.
Find your nearest Mythos branch here.
So, there you have it! All that our two favourite Greek giants have to offer. We'll let you make the final verdict on who the ultimate winner of this challenge is. Opa!
There are few places suited to brunch as perfectly as Doppio Zero in Bedfordview. Pop by in the early afternoon and dine outdoors in the sunshine of the tree lined street. Their menu items are vast, catering to vegan, vegetarians and meat eater alike. While you may opt for a healthy start to the day, we recommend the Breakfast Stack instead. With sweet potato rösti, a fried egg, streaky bacon, rocket, tomato, red onion, brown mushroom and avo, this will delight any palate.
If you happen to be at Eastgate Shopping Centre around brunch time then stop by at Harpers for a delightful meal. Here, you can get freshly made scones, muffins, croissants, waffles and crumpets to satisfy any craving. But if you're looking for something a little more filling, have no worries. Harpers is the home of breakfast in the East Rand. For something different, give the Croque Monsieur a try. This toasted ham and cheese sandwich is smothered in cheese sauce and Gruyere and grilled.
For a healthy take on brunch, head over to tashas at Village View Shopping Centre. Get your vitamin fix with a fruity smoothie or a freshly squeezed fruit juice. Alternatively, tuck into a nutritious breakfast of poached eggs, asparagus or spinach, lemon sauce and seeded bread. Add a side of crispy parma ham, macon or bacon to add some meatiness to your meal. Brunch just got healthy.
Located at Bedford Square, Europa offers residents of Bedfordview a Mediterranean take on brunch. Indulge in breakfasts, light meals and sandwiches inspired by the flavours of Italy and Greece. The Corelli, with health bread, a poached egg, halloumi, brown mushrooms, tzakziki and tomato, avocado and onion salsa, makes for the ultimate Greek feast. Whatever you do, don't leave Europa without trying one of their robust coffees.
To spoil the family with a special brunch, pay Happily Ever Laughter a visit. This restaurant and venue is the perfect spot to take the kiddies for a day out in the sun. With the jungle gyms, slides and other fun activities, the little ones are bound to work up an appetite. Fill them up with a plate of deliciously sweet pancakes or some scrambled eggs and toast served in Happily Ever Laughter's unique frying pan.
Nothing makes for a better brunch than a good bakery. And what better place to get freshly prepared confectionery than Fournos? Eastgate Shopping Centre has some exciting news to announce to all their loyal shoppers. On Friday, 29 November 2019, not only will they be bringing you the best Black Friday deals in the city, but the centre will also be launching its rooftop Aquaponic Farm District! Eastgate Shopping Centre is breaking new ground. Partnering with Ichthys, one of the most influential aquaponic companies in the world, to provide sustainable solutions to food production and food security for its clients, offering them 100% natural and fresh produce at the source.
Eastgate's Aquaponic Farm is the first of its kind across shopping centres in Southern Africa. Utilising smart new technologies, they will effectively use 90% less water than conventional farms. This eliminates waste produced by aquaculture systems and regular hydroponic systems. It also reduces carbon emissions, as there is no need for road distribution. Overall, Eastgate's Aquaponic Farm will produce 100% natural food that tastes great and is healthy. The centre will also eliminate the use of plastic packaging, creating a cleaner area around the farm.
“Liberty Two Degrees (“L2D”), owners of Eastgate Shopping Centre, have committed to reaching a Net Zero Sustainability target by 2030. The addition of the Aquaponic Farm District at the centre entrenches our continued efforts to spread awareness about the current environmental crisis, while providing our customers with an environmentally friendly alternative to food sourcing. We are extremely proud to be home to an innovative, organically designed and operated farm that supports our natural ecosystem,” says Asset Management Executive of Eastgate Shopping Centre, Carmen Collison.
Aquaponics marries aquaculture and organic farming with hydroponics, the process whereby plants and fish are grown together in one integrated system. The fish produce clean and natural fertiliser that provides a natural food source for the growing plants. The plants in turn provide a natural filter for the water the fish live in.
“The chemicals and synthetic fertilisers used in conventional farming, as well as excess water usage, carbon heavy distribution and plastic packaging of produce has become increasingly more harmful to both our environment and to our health. So, what we do is offer the ultimate solution to sustainable farming through aquaponics. We are excited to be showcasing the future of food production that is affordable, sustainable, certified by nature and educational alongside Eastgate Shopping Centre”, says Managing Director of Ichthys, Justin Hess.
Eastgate Shopping Centre’s Aquaponic Farm District will offer customers the option to buy direct. Selling organic fresh fish, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, herbs, peppers, spinach and so much more to the public. For your convenience, these products will be sold every day from Friday, 6 December 2019 outside Entrance 10.
If you are interested in how the process works, visit Eastgate Shopping Centre this December. They will be conducting guided tours of their Aquaponic Farm District. Find more information about this at the Farm District Information Kiosk, located next to the Piazza, or on the centre's website.

Eastgate has something cool and exciting in store for their little visitors! Our planet needs their help to keep it clean and litter free. After all, it is our responsibility to take care of it now and forever. With this in mind, Eastgate wants to show children (and parents) how important recycling is, and just how much fun it can be. Are you with us, Recycle Rangers?
Did you know that next year, Eastgate won’t be using any plastic shopping bags anymore? This is because they want to keep as much plastic out of the environment as possible and do their part for the planet!
Help make a difference by heading to Eastgate’s Aloe Court from 24 – 27 October 2019 between 11:00 and 17:00, where you'll be shown how to make fashionable items out of recycled material that Eastgate has collected; like plastic bottles, bottle tops and straws. From fashion design to stylish accessories, do it all the eco-friendly and eco-fashionable way with Eastgate Shopping Centre.
On Friday, 25 October and Saturday, 26 October, they will be hosting Fashion Upcycle Workshops – no bookings are necessary as the workshops will work on a first-come first-serve basis. These workshops will be conducted by South African artist, Threaded Dame. Threaded Dame started as a hobby but soon became an avenue of promoting issues close to their hearts. Eastgate first opened in 1979. Since then it has undergone renovation, reconstruction and expansion to bring you an even better retail experience. This mega mall now houses over 300 stores, many of which are branded fashion emporiums. Eastgate is known for having something for every kind of shopper - from the kiddies to busy moms and dads, teens, young adults and even grandma. They pride themselves on being a lifestyle hub in Bedfordview, offering an array of restaurants, clothing stores, homeware and boutique shops.
Eastgate boasts an impressive food court. Whether you are in the mood for fast food, oven-fired vegan pizza or gourmet tjips, the food court is sure to have something to curb your cravings. While it's almost impossible to pick a favourite, we have to give a special nod to Primi. Their outdoor deck overlooks the Bedfordview suburb, making it the perfect place to chill out with friends or for a Friday night date. Plus, Primi's pizzas are made to perfection - a thin base, just the right amount of Napoletana sauce and the freshest toppings. Their cocktails are pretty good, too.
For kiddie-friendly options, pop into Mantovani's or Mozambik. Mantovani's is the ideal place to take the family out to dinner. Their Half-Price Pizza Tuesdays are famous for being crowd pleasers, as are their steaks and selection of wines. Mozambik offers something a little different - an Afro-Porto fusion of flavours with a dedicated kiddies menu and play area. What more could you ask for?

You could well and truly get lost at Eastgate Shopping Mall. Next time you feel the shopping spree itch, head on over to check out their variety of department stores, fashion boutiques and homeware emporiums. Our must-visit fashion store at the centre is H&M. This store stretches on for what feels like forever, displaying aisle upon aisle of trendy fashion staples for work and play.
When it comes to home and interior, you are spoiled for choice. Shop around at Coricraft, House & Home, Carrol Boyes and Mr Price Home for all your decorating needs.
Lastly, for good old grocery shopping, roll your trolley into Checkers Hyperama, Woolworths or Game. These supermarkets are great for Christmas shopping or month end grocery dashes. The queues can be quite hectic, but you can always pop into the Lindt chocolate shop for a special treat afterwards.
Eastgate knows the meaning of bigger is better and more is more. This is more than just a shopping mall, it's a hive of entertainment for all ages. The kids can have their fill of fun at The Fun Company arcade. With tons of games, bowling and snooker, this is a paradise for kids.
Right opposite the arcade, you will find Hamley's toy store. Let the kids be entertained by the princesses, clowns and giant teddy bears. The Hamley's train also makes its way through the mall every half an hour. Never again will a child cry crocodile tears over having to go shopping with mom or dad!
Older kids can catch the latest movies at Ster-Kinekor's IMAX Theatres. Featuring 10 cinemas, this is one of Ster-Kinekor's largest movie houses. Luxury cinema seating and a Pizza Hut menu to order adds to the experience. Click here to see Ster-Kinekor's latest blockbuster offerings at Eastgate.
Believe it or not, Bedford Centre is even older than Eastgate! Originally developed in the early 1970s, Bedford Centre underwent massive reconstruction in 2006. Bringing shoppers the ultra-chic, European-inspired Bedford Piazza, this expansion saw the mall become a premium retail and restaurant destination. Featuring 62 000 square meters of retail space with 170 stores, numerous delectable eateries, a Planet Fitness Mega Club and two pristine cinema houses, Bedford Centre is a fine choice for local shoppers and visitors.
Bedford Centre puts a classy spin on the idea of a mall food court. Surrounding the open air piazza, these restaurants offer cuisines ranging from Greek and Italian to Mexican and Portuguese. So, whether you are looking for a decadent slice of cake, a tequila party or a classic date-night restaurant, Bedford Centre should have something right up your alley.
On the east side of the mall there are also a number of takeaway and family-oriented eateries. If you visit only one, we recommend Chevy Lane. A retro-inspired diner, complete with chequered tiles, Chevy replicas and pinball machines. This milkshake and burger joint provides good food, entertainment and a vibe unlike any other. Grown ups can take some time out at the adjoining Hollywood Detour Bar which has an incredible view of the suburb, while kids are sure to be delighted by the props, costumes and colourful treats on offer.
The greatest thing about Bedford Centre is that you can shop in relative peace for most of the year. While it does tend to get a little mad around the holidays, off-peak time is a shopaholics dream. You can easily have an entire shopping trip at the centre without becoming overwhelmed by crowds or noise.
Bedford Centre is home to all the good oldies when it comes to clothing and fashion. Edgars, Pick n Pay Clothing, Mr Price, Cotton On and Foschini are all located on the ground level. Hop from one store to the next to find that perfect outfit or accessory. Plus, these stores often have seasonal sales, so you can score a number of bargains in one shopping trip.
For interesting curio stores and geeky havens, visit Heroes of Games and Comics. This quirky store greets you with Harry Potter memorabilia displays, Marvel figurines and DC branded hoodies. It's the perfect place to pick up a gift for a fanatic friend. Just across it, you will find Planes, Trains and Automobiles - a specialised hobby store, offering repairs to radio controlled planes, cars and boats. All your comic, craft and curio need are sorted!
Click here for a full rundown of the exciting retail options at Bedford Centre.
Bedford Centre makes up for its seemingly small stature with tons of fun entertainment for the whole family. With two prestige cinema complexes, ArtJamming, VR Gaming and a Gravity Jump Centre, you and the kids will never be bored here. That's why during school holidays, this is a kiddies playground.
However, adults haven't been forgotten. Bedford Centre's Exclusive Books caters to the bookworms and scribes, while the outdoor piazza often hosts fun runs and Halloween dress up parties for the whole family. Additionally, there is a baby grand piano just outside Foschini which often sees musicians perform impromptu concerts.
Eastgate Shopping Mall and Bedford Centre each offer their own special retail and entertainment experiences. Visit them both to pick your favourite, or hop between the two to make the most of the Bedfordview retail mile.
TJIPS is a newly opened eatery at Eastgate Mall. Serving up nothing but chips, this place has become a fast hit among Bedfordview diners. Patrons can expect a variety of these deep-fried potato morsels, including chips smothered in sauces, gourmet loaded chips and even dessert chips.
As mentioned, the menu offers up nothing but chips. This includes plain or spiced chips served up with your choice of tomato sauce, mayo or half-and-half. Alternatively, you can also try the Saucy AF chips. Sauces includes the Pink Garlic Mayo, Honey-Mustard, Sriracha Mayo, Thai Peanut, Curry Ketchup, Spicy Salsa, Tomato or Mayo options.
Perhaps the main draw of the restaurant, the gourmet loaded chips are available in loads of choices. These include the Il Continentale, Parmesan chips with black truffle oil; Seoul Food, chips with pulled chicken and slaw; Oom Sam, chilli cheese chips; El Supremo, salsa, guacamole and sour cream loaded chips and the Poutine, cheesey chips topped with gravy.
For those struggling to decide, TJIPS offers a Tasting Tray for 2, featuring any two choices and a Saucy AF option. They also offer a Tasting Tray for 4, with a choice of any four options and two Saucy AF portions. We think we could manage an Il Continentale and El Supremo with a side of pink garlic mayo chips all on our own.
Oddly enough, TJIPS also offers a dessert menu. We were expecting some form of churro chips, but the desserts actually feature real chips made from real potatoes. The Shenanigans, sweet-style TJIPS with a scoop of Paul's Vanilla ice cream, peanut-caramel sauce and coconut flakes may seem a little weird. But patrons brave enough to try it have been raving since.
Currently, the TJIPS store is located at Eastgate Shopping Mall in Bedfordview. You can find them at entrance 9, close to the Nandos.
They are also rumoured to be opening a branch at the newly completed Fourways Mall in the northern suburbs.
And they can also be found zooming around Joburg in their AF Food Truck, keep a look out on their social media to find out the whens and wheres.

This potato restaurant offers diners the chance to experience the luxury and deliciousness of this solanaceous vegetable. Their menu consists of nothing but loaded chips, saucy chips and dessert chips. Menu items include taters topped with items such as Parmesan with black truffle mayo, pulled chicken and sesame slaw and even a cheeseburger with no bun, just chips. Those braver than us may try the sweet chips, topped with vanilla ice cream, peanut-caramel sauce and toasted coconut flakes. It's about time Joburg had an eatery devoted to the humble potato, if you ask us.
This eatery, based in Mushroom Park, offers a wide selection of bistro food, many of which centre around the earthy truffle. Diners can expect delectable meals ranging from bar food to signature mains. The Grilled Octopus, Burnt Corn & Avocado Salad, Braised Lamb Shoulder and Truffles Signature Burger are all fine choices. However, the Truffle Parmesan Fries remains one of the most raved about menu items. These twice-fried chips are served with nutty Parmesan and creamy black truffle aioli.
Located in Parkhurst, this burger joint makes some of the most sought after burgers in Joburg. And we can see why. With over 20 burgers, including vegan options, to choose from, this is a burger haven. As fabulous as the burgers are, we can't resist their chips. The Loaded Fries comes covered in bacon bits, sweet chilli and mozzarella. They also offer up creamy peri peri and mozzarella Disco Fries and Truffle Cheese Fries. Low Carbers and Banters also have their pick with the Avo Fries served with tangy sweet chilli sauce.
This bar in Benoni offers diners yummy pub grub, with everything from Deep Fried Ravioli and Brannas Basted Chicken Wings to a Peanut Butter Burger and Pulled Pork. Our favourite pub grub, especially while enjoying a few jam jars, are loaded chips. This bar caters to this with their Fully Loaded Chips. These are topped with cheddar and mozzarella. Dinners can then choose to top this with spring onion, bacon and jalapeno or pulled pork and BBQ.
Brooklyn Brothers has recently popped up at several locations across the city. We have often frequented the Bedford branch to get our fix of great burgers, sticky chicken wings, saucy ribs, fluffly waffles, thick milkshakes and perfectly fried chips. The Brothers have several fries that bridge the gap to gourmet including Macon & Cheese Fries, Blue Cheese Fries, Garlic Parmesan Fries and our favourite, Dirty Fries. These are smothered with Beef Chilli Mince, Cheedar Cheese, Beans and Jalapeno Fries.
No matter how we might feel about the values of this establishment, we can't deny that their food is delicious. This eatery offers patrons American-style cuisine with the burgers, tacos, curly fries, shrimp, philly cheesesteak and chicken wings. Although not suitable for fine dining, this place makes a good location when we have the munchies. But no cravings can be fulfilled without a plate of chips. This is where the Big Dipper Chili Fries comes in. Huge chips are loaded with chilli con carne, cheese and chipotle cream sauce.
