The Herb Farm is planted directly between Johannesburg and Pretoria, in the tranquil hills of Midrand. Taking a 40-minute drive out of the city to this manicured herb garden, bistro and nursery is well worth it. The view alone is picture-worthy, but it's the scent of the place that will have you dizzy with pleasure. A thousand different smells of healing herbs, indigenous plants and fragrant lavender greet you. Boasting over 400 herbal plants in one setting, this is a botanical gem. The architecture of the Herb Garden matches this beauty in spades. With secret spaces, mazes, climbing gardens and fountains surrounded by lush roses bushes, this is paradise if ever there was one.
Come and explore the Herb Farm's bountiful rows of corn, potatoes and other hardy vegetables. Using only the scent of their herbs as natural pesticides, The Herb Farm is able to grow ample produce. Next move on to the wonderland of mazes at the centre of the gardens. Spiraled pathways are lined with healing plants such as Echinacea and Pineapple Sage. Take a moment to stop and read all about the properties of these plants which can be found on signposts along the path. You may be surprised by what you learn!
Once you have thoroughly explored the Herb Farm's gardens, make your way to the garden shop near the exit. Here, you can find nifty hanging baskets, planters and boxes for all your herbs and seedlings. The garden shop often partners with local traders to bring you a fabulous outdoor market. This market sells beautiful blooms, cacti, garden gnomes, handcrafted steel work and fertilisers. The kiddies can have a ball at the Play Yard while you browse around for all your garden and kitchen essentials.
The Herb Farm often hosts tours and workshops in their gardens. Their annual Autumn Show brings in scores of curious gardeners, cooks and herbalists. They also host cooking classes, teaching eager foodies all about the right ways to use herbs and spices in their cooking. However, possibly the biggest attraction at the Herb Farm are their High Tea events. Hosted twice a year, these afternoon high tea events highlight the spectacular versatility of herbs in an array of tasty finger foods, drinks and sweet treats, hosted at the Herb Farm Bistro, which seats 70 people under a canopy of trees.
The Herb Farm Bistro has now also introduced a High Tea For Two, hosted on the last Sunday of every month. The perfect outing for mom and daughter or old friends, this is a high tea with a difference. For only *R250 per person, you get an assortment of snacks, cakes and herbal teas to enjoy among the buzzing bees. Secure your booking via email at [email protected].
The Herb Farm Bistro also caters romantic picnics and special occasions. Bring your loved one along for a picnic in the gardens featuring olive brie, green fig brie, White Rock, bacon, caramlised onion and peppadew quiche, hummus, cream cheese, basil and sun-dried tomato, pastrami, gypsy ham, dried fruit, crackers, ciabatta, meatballs and chicken wings! Finish off your feast with sweet date balls, lemon tart and dark chocolate. Paired with a glass or two of Pomegranate Cuvee, this is sure to win over any heart.
Alternatively, you can host your baby shower, kitchen tea or birthday party at the Herb Farm Bistro. Catering options include a 'Kuier Tafel' buffet, brunch buffet or celebration snack platter. Whichever you choose, you are bound to be wowed by the culinary ingenuity of this bistro and bar. Guests of any age are welcome too. So, bring the little ones along, as well as Mom, Dad, Granny and all your friends.
The Herb Garden Bistro uses only free-range, grass fed meat and eggs, stone ground flour, locally sourced vegetables and herbs from their own garden. Their summer menu has been updated to feature a number of vegan options too. Stop by for a hearty breakfast, light lunch or casual sun downers.
