Braamfontein is the oldest recognised suburb of the city of Johannesburg. Following the gold rush of the 1850s, Braamfontein became a central hub for business, sport and leisure. With the establishment of the South African School of Mining in 1895 (later to become the University of the Witwatersrand), Braamfontein cemented its status as a bustling inner city suburb. Today, "Braam" as it is affectionately known, is one of the city's top destinations for entertainment, retail, dining and loft-style living. From its many contemporary restaurants to its fabulous night life, Braamfontein offers an array of exciting activities. It is also undoubtedly the underground fashion hub of Johannesburg, often referred to as "sneaker town". You never quite know what you might find in this eclectic part of the city.
Braamfontein is quite unlike any other shopping destination in the city. There few malls and shopping centres here, but rather a collection of independent fashion stores, curio shops and artisanal markets. Braam is the ultimate shopping hub for fashion fundis, collectors and organic food lovers. 70 Juta Street is one of the area's top retail precincts. Here, you will find an ever-expanding number of pop-up shops and local fashion boutiques. If you're not one to follow the crowd, this is the place to do your fashion buying. The Neighbourgoods Marketis also a favourite for farm fresh goods and handmade crafts. Overall, Braamfontein offers a truly unique shopping experience well worth exploring.
Braamfontein boasts an equally vibrant daytime and nighttime entertainment scene. Whether you prefer a casual stroll around a weekend market or epic adventures under the cover of darkness, Braam offers an assortment of fun hangouts and entertainment activities. The suburb is also lauded for its arts and culture scene. Catch a theatre show at the magnificent Joburg Theatre or visit Constitution Hill to learn about our country's past. Braamfontein is a hive of activity over weekends, bringing a diverse mix of people together to celebrate life in all its glories. If you've ever imagined what a South African utopia looks like, Braam on a Saturday night would be it. People of all creeds, colours and orientations gather here to eat, drink and be merry. So, what are you waiting for? Get in on the Braamfontein party scene or you'll be missing out!
From early morning coffee to the midnight munchies, Braamfontein's restaurant scene has got you covered. Thanks to its large student population and nearby business districts, the eateries here offer a wide variety of cuisines. Come and tuck into traditional South African shisanyama, Mediterranean fare or gourmet hot dogs at Braamfontein's top class restaurants. The area is also favoured as one of the best places to grab brunch on a Sunday morning. Think classic eggs Benedict, maple glazed bacon on sweet French toast and some of the best coffee in Joburg. Eating out in Braamfontein is a taste adventure you don't want to skip out on. Come hungry!
Braamfontein is a verified backpackers town. Come and find the best budget accommodation at one of its hotels, lodges or hostels. Once in Joburgoffers you all three in one - as Joburg's only 'poshtel' it welcomes in students, tourists and adventurers of all kinds. You can share a room with friends or bunk with total strangers for the night. It's all about sparing your pocket money for great adventures around the city. Braam is also home to the great Bannister Hotel. After a long night of partying, this is the ideal inexpensive stay over. Plus there's free breakfast to be had in the morning! If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind travel experience, book yourself into a Braamfontein hotel or self-catering accommodation. There is no better way to soak up all that this corner of the city has to offer than by getting right into the thick of it.
In spite of its relatively small size, Braamfontein suburb is home to many schools, universities and colleges. Located right in the centre of Braamfontein is the University of the Witwatersrand. This elite tertiary institution is one of the suburb's greatest landmarks and draw cards for students from around the country. There are also a number of private colleges located in the area, specialising in media studies, graphic design and marketing. The National School of the Arts is situated in the area as well, directly opposite the Joburg Theatre complex. The school offers a disciplined curriculum, combining practical arts studies with the national syllabus. Many talented visual artists, dancers, musicians and theatre makers have graduated from this top co-educational high school.
The City Council of Johannesburg offices are situated in Braamfontein, as is the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Visit the various city government departments here for assistance with your water and electricity rates, service delivery, waste removal and road works. The Gauteng Department of Labour and the Provincial office for the Department of Home Affairs are also located in the area. The Provincial Head Office of the South African Police Service is located on Empire road, on the border between Braamfontein and Parktown.
Thanks to its central city location, Braamfontein is the ideal meeting place for large conferences and events. Thankfully, there are a few conference venues in the area, suited to hosting both small and large gatherings. Constitution Hill plays host to many corporate events, private functions and outdoor music festivals. Whether you’ are hosting a meeting, a seminar or talk, a cocktail reception or a banquet, there should be a space suited to your needs at Con Hill. Similarly, the Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Parktonian All-Suite offers event rooms with a seating capacity of up to 450 people. So, if you're looking to hold an event in Joburg, look no further than Braamfontein's best conference venues.
Many of South Africa's major corporations have office spaces situated in Braamfontein, including Liberty Holdings Limited, JD Group, Sappi, Bidvest Bank and Hollard. The suburb offers a multitude of work opportunities across a range of fields. Being situated just north of the city centre makes its job market incredibly lucrative. There are numerous means of transport in and out of Braamfontein as well, meaning that workers can easily commute in from areas around the city. The Gautrain at Park Station brings in people from Sandton, Rosebank and Johannesburg East each day to work in Braamfontein.
Over recent years, Braamfontein has seen massive regeneration. As such, it has regained some of its former glory in terms of property and rentals. If you're on the lookout for a designer loft, this is the place to go house hunting. Many of the suburb's old buildings have been renovated into lush apartment complexes, perfect for young professionals. New Braamfontein Lofts is an urban development making big waves on the property scene. Offering an escape from the hustle and bustle of the inner city, this artisanal residential complex combines the best of industrial-style architecture with contemporary comfort. But don't imagine that only 'cool kids' or artists call Braamfontein home. All are welcome here, so come and find your forever home.

Just a few weeks before the country entered lockdown, L'atelier Bakery hosted its grand opening event. We were lucky enough to be invited along to sample some of their delectable menu items. What we found was undeniably chic and quintessentially Parisian. This elegant bakery offers a stunning selection of cakes and pastries, neatly displayed to attract your attention from any angle of the restaurant floor. It also gifts its patrons with an atmosphere quite unlike any other cake shop and eatery in the city. L'atelier promised to be a hot spot for cosmopolitan foodies and pastry lovers. Located on the first floor of the Trumpet Building along Keyes Art Mile, we had it pegged as the next hub for First Thursdays in the City.
Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, sadly L'atelier's grand opening was followed by a period of closure. All throughout hard lockdown, we reminisced over their delicious mini tartlets, canapes and cakes. Now, we've been delivered the best possible news since we first got wind of their opening - L'atelier Bakery is offering collection and delivery in level 3 lockdown!
L'atelier Bakery is the brain child of pastry chef and restaurateur, Laetitia Van Waeyenberge. A self-taught chef, she trained at EFL culinary school in Belgium to further perfect her skills. Laetitia and her team of chefs are experts in French and Belgian delicacies, from French Madeleines to croissants, baguettes and much more. However, L'atelier Bakery is more than just a cake shop. They also offer tasty breakfasts and savoury eats. Here are our top picks of what they've got on offer in level 3 lockdown:
Start your day off on the perfect note with a breakfast specially prepared by L'atelier's chefs. Their Breakfast Bruschetta Bar has all you need to get on the go - Eggs Benedict served with spinach and feta. Paired with a fresh juice or a rich and creamy coffee from Afrikoa Cafe, its sister restaurant just next door, this breakfast is simply divine.
There's nothing better to get you through the mid-morning slump than a savoury filled croissant. L'atelier offers three varieties of this filling snack, including a decadent salmon, cream cheese and avocado option. But if you're looking for something a little more substantial to tide you over till lunch, pick up one of their Feuillete Saucisse - puff pastry stuffed with vienna sausages, minced meat or cheese. It's the perfect indulgence.
If you are fortunate enough to work or live near Keyes Art Mile, pop into the bakery at lunchtime to order their soup of the day. You'll have the option of tomato, butternut or carrot with coconut, served with grated cheese and crispy croutons. Alternatively, spoil yourself with a generous slice of quiche. Made from the flakiest pastry, rich cheese, cream and the freshest eggs, it's a definite must-try.
Of course, you may want to visit L'atelier Bakery simply to treat yourself to a selection of their specialty pasties and tartlets. We can hardly blame you! In level 3 lockdown, L'atelier will be offering an array of divine biscuits, filled pastries and tangy tartlets for you to enjoy at home. Chocoholics, there's good news for you, too. You can order an assortment of chocolate truffles and Afrikoa chocolate bars from the bakery for collection or delivery.
L'atelier Bakery is open for collection and delivery. All you have to do is give them a call on 010 110 7467 or contact them via email to place your order. You can then opt to collect curbside or to have your order delivered to your home or office. Deliveries within 5km will cost R20, while deliveries within a 10km radius will cost you R50. Keep an eye on L'atelier Bakery's Facebook and Instagram pages for updates on their menu, collection and delivery services.

Shed & Silo
The Shed & Silo Country Cafe offers that classic East Rand simplicity in their scrumptious breakfast menu. The restaurant is situated on a farmstead in Benoni, so there is an added air of tranquility with every meal. Try the Eggs Benedict - served with crispy farm style bacon, olive ciabatta toast, sprinkled with black sesame seeds and topped with sweet micro herbs. Once you have gobbled up all of that goodness, take a saunter over to their cake display. These are some of the best cakes in the east, so make sure to take a slice home or treat yourself to an after breakfast dessert.
The Bread Basket at Greenstone Mall serves up traditional breakfasts with a Mediterranean twist. Plus, their bread and cookies are to die for, so you might as well pay them a visit. Their standout breakfast is the Banana and Peanut Butter French Toast Croissant which is served with vanilla ice cream. Not particularly nutritious, but this is perfect for when you need a little sweetening up on a Saturday morning. The Bread Basket also offers weekend breakfast specials featuring all the greats; bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, chips, toast and two eggs. Paired with one of their gourmet flavoured coffees, this is as good as breakfast gets in the East Rand.
Little Belgium is the new kid on the breakfast block, but don't let that deter you from experiencing their ingenious take on the timeless waffle. This trendy waffle house just opened in October 2019 at Flamingo’s Nest Boutique Hotel in Benoni. All their meals are made fresh and can be adapted to suit your dietary needs. There are four breakfast waffle options, but our top pick is the healthy Yogi. A crispy waffle stack, drizzled with golden syrup, topped with Greek yogurt, granola and fresh fruit of the day. If you want something more substantial, try their Beef Tagliattan waffle - wild rocket, topped with caramelised red onion, rare grilled sirloin, balsamic reduction and crumbed feta cheese, served on a crispy waffle base and garnished with micro greens!
The Red Door Cafe in Edenvale is the ideal spot for hipster-inspired breakfast grub, serving up Ferrero Rocher croissants, Nutella cruffins and Cornflake crusted french toast with cream cheese and fig jam confections. The Red Door is also Edenvale's dedicated Paleo and Banting-friendly eatery. Their seasonal Paleo menu features a delightful breakfast bowl comprised of sweet potato wedges, red onion, spinach, bacon, hash browns, avocado and a poached egg. So, the next time you are hungry for a healthy, yet flavourful brekkie, take a journey to the east.
Another Edenvale favourite is La Tazzina. This Alice In Wonderland themed cafe is well hidden, but well worth the hunt to find it. Their adorable garden makes the perfect setting for a slow breakfast with friends or family. While they are mostly famous for their cakes and pastries, this quiet cafe also serves up a mean Mediterranean breakfast with your choice of Italian coffee. We love La Tazzina's omelette options, which range from basic three egg and cheese, to the Popeye - an omelette filled with spinach, feta and mushrooms! However, our favourite is the La Tazzina open omelette - topped with mozzarella, bocconcini, rosa tomatoes and homemade pesto. It is breakfast perfection.
For a classy breakfast experience in the east, visit Cafe Billi Bi at Stoneridge Mall. This is the place where all the cool kids hang out, with breakfast aficionados travelling from far to sample Billi Bi's fare. It is also dog-friendly, so bring your best furry friend along. Their salmon and asparagus Eggs Benedict is almost too picture perfect to eat, with slivers of smokey salmon and parma harm perched elegantly atop a poached egg, fresh asparagus and rye toast. Dressed in a Hollandaise sauce, this is early morning fine dining fit for a king. Cafe Billi Bi is famed for their premium roast coffee, too. Sit back, relax and enjoy the simple life while sipping on your favourite brew. The view from the restaurant is quite impressive, so bring your selfie sticks along!
Benoni truly seems to be the east's representative for awesome breakfast and unique dining experiences. Take a trip to The Victorian Secret as soon as you can for a great breakfast treat. Set inside a renovated Victorian-style home, TVS is one of Joburg's finest patisseries. Their set breakfast menu includes a starter of homemade granola served with fresh seasonal fruit and yoghurt, accompanied by bottomless filter coffee and tea or one jug of freshly squeezed fruit juice to share between six people. Next up, there is a buffet of fluffy scrambled egg, bacon, mushrooms, cocktail tomatoes and freshly baked croissants. And if that wasn’t enough to delight you, tuck into a sweet platter filled with assorted bakery delights.
Harpers Restaurant at Eastgate Mall is a long-standing favourite with residents of the east. Their breakfast menu is varied and generous, offering everything from healthy granola, to full Farmhouse spreads. There is the traditional English breakfast for when you're mighty hungry - fried or poached eggs, bacon, beef sausages, grilled tomato, large brown mushroom and grilled onion, served with toast and preserves. Harpers also caters for vegetarians with meat-free French toast, Spanish style eggs and fried brinjal, mushroom, spinach and grilled cherry tomatoes on toast. Sample their selection of herbal Twinnings teas with a macaron or gingerbread man for breakfast pudding.
George's Bread & Co. recently won the Best of Ekhuruleni award for Best Bakery, Best Coffee Shop, Best New Restaurant and Best Bakery with Cafe. If that wasn't reason enough to get you to travel to Boksburg, then come and indulge in their array of breakfast pastries. Apple and Custard Danishes, Chelsea Buns and Muffins greet you at the cafe counter. George's cafe haven't skimped on the tea and coffee either. We recommend the Dirty Chai Latte - a shot of espresso muddled with Chai spices and topped with frothed milk or cream. Don't forget to pick up a loaf of their 100% Sourdough bread or a pastry to take home.
Finally, we have BemBom - an authentic Portuguese coffee shop, bakery and cafe. Their slogan "The Sweet Taste of Portugal" is apt, as their menu features a great selection of Porto-Mediterranean dishes. They are also one of the most reasonable breakfast spots in the East Rand, with branches in Bedfordview, Meadowdale and Benoni. For something a little outside of the breakfast box, try the Papas de Milho Amarelo - freshly cooked polenta with spinach, mushrooms, bacon and a poached egg, topped with grated Parmesan cheese. It's porridge with a difference!
Do you know of any other great breakfast spots in the East Rand? Let us know about them!

Frida's Quirky Coffee Bar
Frida's Coffee Bar is no ordinary restaurant. Housed in what used to be a suburban home in Albemarle, Germiston, this coffee bar and cafe takes quirky to the next level. Firstly, you are greeted by a garden adorned with crocheted dream catchers, colourful rugs and pot plants galore. Beautiful mosaics guide you through the garden path into the restaurant. But before you step inside, check out the pool - no longer a family's haven from the summer heat, the centre of the garden has been turned into a dining area! Complete with tables, chairs and comfortable cushions, this is most certainly one of the most interesting spots to have a meal in the city. It's also a really cool spot to host a party, keep that in mind.
Frida's outside seating is relaxed, but nevertheless eye-catching. Colours meet your eye at every turn. The day of our visit was fairly sunny with a slight breeze. As such, we opted to sit outside, but not before taking a look around the cafe's interior. We almost regretted our seating choice then, as Frida's Coffee Bar is another world all together on the inside. Each wall is painted a different colour. Tapestries add even more vibrancy, but the main attraction is the iconic and stoic Frida Kahlo herself. Painted portraits of the artist hang on almost every surface of the restaurant. Notorious for being the subject of most of her paintings, Kahlo was undoubtedly one of the most prolific female artists of her time. Paying homage to her legacy, this coffee bar and cafe is a must-visit for art lovers, feminist scholars and anyone who loves chocolate cake.
But, before we get to the food, we must mention another fascinating feature of the interior restaurant - a library! Guests are welcome to take a seat on Frida's comfy couch and soak up some great literature. From art history books, to painting manuals and even biographies, this mini library is a book lover's dream. Add a cup of the cafe's great coffee and you are set for an afternoon of bliss.
Tex-Mex Fare and Death by Chocolate
Frida's Coffee Bar serves up an array of Mexican-inspired dishes (fitting, since Frida was proudly Mexican). Their menu includes the good old favourites - quesadillas, burritos, fajitas and crunchy tacos. But, we ordered the spicy chicken livers with toast to start. Luckily, our unusual choice paid off well. The livers were perfectly cooked, but the highlight of the dish was the garlic and chili gravy. Rich and hearty, it was almost filling enough to skip straight to dessert. However, we chose to try out the quesadillas for good measure and because they are my personal favourite. Floury tortilla fold overs filled with grilled chicken and three types of cheese was what hit our table. Accompanied by tangy sour cream, spicy salsa and creamy guacamole. We pigged out on the meal, leaving very little space for Frida's famous chocolate cake.
Needing something sweet to round off the feast, I ordered a red cappuccino with honey. Being my frothy drink of choice, I wasn't expecting anything I hadn't tried before. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Frida's rooibos capp is undoubtedly the best I have sampled. The flavour of the tea is bold, but sweet. With just a pinch of cinnamon, this could be heaven.
Not wanting to miss out on all the hype, we also ordered a slice of Death by Chocolate cake to go. The serving was large enough for three, but we managed to scoff it down in a team of two awhile later at home. Fair warning - this really is death by chocolate. Not for the faint of heart or stomach, this cake reminded us of Miss Trunchbull's “most scrumptious cake in the entire world”! Super moist, dark chocolate sponge covered in ganache, we vote this as Joburg's best death by chocolate cake. Visit Frida's Coffee Bar and sample a piece to prove us wrong.

Motherland Coffee are all about reclaiming Africa's coffee heritage. They believe that coffee started in Africa, and that by investing in our continent's coffee trade, we can create a perky future for all. That's why Motherland bring their customers only the finest African brews, roasted to perfection.
This coffee cafes slogan is Drink the Love - because let's face it, there is no greater love affair than between an overtired city-slicker and their cuppa joe. The difference here is that when you enjoy a Motherland coffee, you are becoming part of the African coffee community.
Motherland Coffee established its flagship store in 2010, before branching out all over Joburg. They now have cafes all over the northern suburbs of Joburg, including Rosebank at the Zone, Dunkeld, Parktown North, Benmore, Sandton, Birnam and Rivonia.
Mother Africa Takes on Bedfordview
On Tuesday, 20 August 2019, Motherland Coffee announced the opening of their new cafe in Bedfordview. Finally us East-siders can have a taste of the good stuff! We paid the cafe a visit one week after its opening to check out the vibe, snacks and of course, the coffee.
Typical of the Motherland brand, the Bedfordview cafe is eclectically African-inspired. From the cushion prints to the wallpaper, there is something distinctly African about the decor. The cafe is situated on the top level of Bedford Village shopping centre, giving customers a fantastic view of the surrounding suburbs. It is also surprisingly quiet. This would be the perfect place to catch up with old friends or even get some important work done (using their free WIFI). When you pay Motherland Coffee Bedfordview a visit, take a seat at the window and soak up a little mellow sunshine while you're at it.
Motherland offer the best of café fare. Their menus are regional, bringing you the best from local producers, farmers and dairies with a focus on quality and ethical sourcing. Their love for coffee has also seen the creation of a number of new and exciting coffee drinks. However, they pride themselves on having perfected the old favourites, too.
Walking into the Bedfordview branch, you are greeted by the sight of muffins, cake loaves, cheesecake and decadent chocolate cake. You are also welcomed by the scent of delicious coffees, freshly brewed and waiting just for you. The food menu features sarmies, wraps, toasties and salads - just what you need to keep you going. But, it's the drinks we are really here for, so let's break down what they have on offer:
Small, Tall and The Mother Cuppa
Motherland Coffee Bedfordview have kept all the good old favourites on the menu. From traditional cappuccinos with silky steamed milk, to flavoured lattes and sweet mochas made with dark chocolate sauce and espresso. However, they know that you also want the latest coffee trends and super cool Insta-worthy drinks on the menu. You can order your drink small, tall or mega - the Mother Cuppa - for those days when your only way to survive is by drowning in caffeine.
We tried out the vanilla latte and a frozen Chai latte - organic chai made with Malawian black tea, blended with milk and ice. The vanilla latte was sweet and frothy, with natural bitter undertones. However, we felt that it could've used a little more espresso to balance out the sweetness and deliver a real kick. The frozen Chai latte on the other hand was perfectly balanced - not too sweet and not too spicy. There was plenty of ice, making it a wonderful refreshment on an unusually warm day.
We simply couldn't resist the milktart, caramel and condensed milk cheesecake either. With subtle hints of cinnamon, a yummy biscuit base and ultra-smooth condensed milk filling, this little treat was well worth the guilty calories. Plus, the flavours complimented the vanilla and spices in our drinks oh so well.
Overall, our visit to the cafe was a tasty, relaxed experience. We'll be back soon Motherland!
