Sarafina The Broadway Hit Musical is a moving and historically relevant production that should be seen by all South Africans. Based on the film featuring Whoopi Goldberg, the musical, directed by Dr Mbongeni Ngema, is an emotional flashback to the student uprising during apartheid. Visit Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum
Date: 16 June 2019 (Open from Mon – Sat, 10:00 – 17:00)
Youth Day is the perfect day to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 16 June 1976 by visiting The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum situated in Orlando West, Soweto. The grounds are so significant because it is the site where the young Hector Pieterson was shot and killed and many other school children were wounded after police opened fire on their protest march. Movies And Documentaries To Watch On The Day
Sarafina
Without a doubt this one is a must-watch on this special day. This movie sheds light on the unfair treatment that the African youth went through. The story is about students involved in the Soweto Uprising, in opposition to the implementation of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in school. This movie will put you in your feels for sure and it never gets old because it really allows us to relate to the struggle these young people endured, giving you just a fraction of the struggles and experiences.
UPRIZE!
Sifiso Khanyile really did a great job with this documentary, putting in his heart and soul to tell this story of the 1976 Soweto Uprising as told by the student leaders who were part and parcel of the movement and struggle. This one really is eye opening because it will move you as it evokes many emotions, told through the use of archive footage, evocative music and stories coming straight from the horse's mouth, those stories told by the former student leaders. You are able to tap into the reality that was their lives and what that experience has done to them.
Surfing Soweto
This one really had us biting our nails, watching those young men surfing trains in Soweto. Released in 2010, this film has Sara Blecher's narrating style all over it. Carefully documenting three young men, walking us through their stories and how they became train surfers. If you're asking what train surfing is, it is the act of dodging electrical cables while on top of trains.
Everything Must Fall
This is an unflinching look at the movement #FeesMustFall. This whole movement started when protests over the cost of education emerged, and morphed into the most militant national revolt since the country's first democratic elections in 1994. This story is told by four student leaders at Wits University and their Vice Chancellor, Adam Habib, left-wing, former anti-apartheid student activist. So, it definitely a must-watch on the day.
Out Of This World
South Africa is one of the most unique places ever and the creative well never dries, which is the beauty of it. This documentary series sees an American rapper, performance artist and activist Mykki Blanco exploring Johannesburg and queer culture as it exists in the city at a time when queer voices are constantly being silenced. Mykki meets these amazing, talented and unique young artists and picks their brain about queer culture in the face of adversity. A great watch if you ask us!
When They See Us
And lastly but by no means least, we know it is not South African, but we can truly relate to this story one way or the other. A definite must-watch, based on a true story of the Central Park Five Boys, who were wrongfully accused of a crime they didn't commit all because they were found at the wrong place, at the wrong time, their childhood stripped away from them from the ages of 14-16. It's sad to watch but truly informative and very eye opening about the issues of boys of colour being arrested for crimes they didn't commit. And you'll be glad to know that it is now showing on Netflix. Check it out, take our word for it you'll appreciate it, just make sure you have a full box of tissues at hand!
