Candles

Candles have the unique ability to create a romantic ambiance with the gentle light and aromatic scents. They can also be necessary during the dreaded load shedding. Yet most people don't buy candles for themselves. Gift your loved ones with a sweet scented candle. Include a lighter or box of matches, just in case.

Cleaning Supplies

A new home means a new mess. And cleaning supplies tend to be last on the list of essential home items. Clean up this problem by purchasing a bucket. Then fill it with bottles of dishwashing liquid, floor cleaner, all purpose cleaner, surface polish, washing powder, fabric softener and a few sponges and clothes.

Engraved Board

This can be an amazing gift for someone special as it can be personalised to that person. Get a cheese or bread board engraved with a special message, name or image. Carved offers a plethora of designs, or will design a custom piece just for your special someone.

Meals

Meal prep can be tough for new homeowners, at least until they have had a chance to stock up the pantry cupboard, and to purchase cookware. Plus mom is no longer cooking for them. Keep them fed with a thoughtful meal kit or some frozen meals

House Plant

Plants add a touch of serenity and tranquility into their surroundings. Add a touch of life into a new home with a house plant such as flowers, cacti and succulents. Cooking enthusiasts will appreciate a range of potted herbs for their kitchen.

Kitchen Gift Basket

Smaller gifts can have greater value. Especially if they are useful. Create a treasured kitchen gift basket. Fill it with small and necessary kitchen items like toothpicks, baking paper, foil, dish towels, sauces and spices. Add a few bigger pieces for impact. These could be a bottle opener, can opener, vegetable peeler or grater.

House Hamper

Create a gift hamper for new homeowners filled with items they would never think to get. Curtain hooks, hooks, batteries, hangers, extension cords, plug adapters, a torch and sewing kit are all items we often need, but never seem to buy. Most of these are available at Builders Warehouse.

Cookware Set

Pots and pans are a necessary item in most kitchens. And we somehow can always do with a few more. We adore this 15 piece stainless steel cookware set from Takealot. This set includes four casserole pots of different sizes, one frying pan and one sauce pot, all with lids, as well as two serving spoons and a shovel.

Buzzy Wax

Buzzy Wax is a reusable and sustainable alternative to plastic bags and cling wrap. Made from cotton, beeswax, jojoba oil and resin, these malleable wraps will change shape with the warmth of your hands and hold shape once cool. The Buzzy Wax gift pack consists of a small, medium and large wrap, a great housewarming gift for the eco conscious.

A Tool Kit

Having your own place comes with maintenance. Whether it's fixing a loose wire, changing a stuck light bulb or hammering a few nails in the wall, a tool kit will come in handy. And they're easy to wrap, making it a great gift for both giver and receiver.

You can find Yankee Candle at selected stockists or you can buy them online with the simplicity of having them delivered to your preferred spot.

So, how about that romantic dinner or maybe a time alone session with candles, music and a glass of juice (or wine).

You will need:

Candle container of choice
Mason Jar
Wick
Hot glue gun and hot glue
Pencil or drinking straw
Candle wax [paraffin, soy, beeswax]
Double boiler
Wooden spoon
Scissors
Liquid dye [optional]
Essential oil [optional]
Large chef knife [optional]

What to do:

  1. Dab some hot glue on the bottom of the wick and glue it inside the bottom center of the jar/ candle container. Straighten the wick, roll the excess length around a pencil or straw and balance the pencil or straw on the rim of the cup.
  2. Cut up your block of wax (if necessary) so that it will fit inside the large mason jar. Some wax comes in chips or flakes, in which case you will just need to measure the amount needed. You'll need between 5 to 8 ounces of wax, depending on the size of your candle container.
  3. Fill a saucepan with an inch of water and bring it to a boil. Place the mason jar in the boiling water and place the wax inside the jar. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until the wax is completely melted, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes.
  4. Take the wax off the heat, add a few drops of liquid dye and stir. Continue adding liquid dye a few drops at a time until the wax is your desired color. If you’d like to add a fragrance to the candle, add several drops of essential oil to the melted wax and stir.
  5. Pour the melted wax into the jar/ candle container, leaving about 1/4 inch of room at the top.
  6. Allow the wax to cool for at least 30 to 40 minutes.
  7. Unravel the wick from the pencil or straw and trim it to 1/2 inch.
