Time For A Change

iThemba is a Zulu word, meaning hope. To date, Avon Justine has raised in excess of R20 million through the sale of special “pink ribbon” products for breast cancer education, awareness and screenings in South Africa. Show your support for the fight against breast cancer, a disease that strikes 1 in 29 South African women. With your help, they are saving lives!

And so the countdown begins to this year's Avon Justine iThemba Walkathon. Come dressed in pink and show your support to the fighters of cancer.

Avon Justine iThemba Walkathon

The Pink Light Project is a global education campaign, developed in association with Cancer Research UK to deliver the Avon Breast Cancer Promise Pledge to educate women about the risks and signs and to teach women how to take action. The message reached 337 million women, thanks to the astonishing efforts of Avon's strong network of women around the world; their associates and representatives.

If Dr Heidi van Loggerenberg and Margie Doig-Gander would have known more about their DNA, could they have avoided their type cancer? According to them – absolutely!

Heidi was diagnosed with estrogen-positive breast cancer at 35, and Margie with ovarian cancer at 37. What could have potentially mended their life, ended up being the beginning of something spectacular – something that would have a far-reaching impact beyond that of their own lives.

During their cancer journey, they learned about 'epigenetics' – a revolutionary science that studies how your nutrition, environment and lifestyle (NEL) choices can switch genes 'on' and ‘off’ in your body. In other words, our DNA is NOT our destiny but rather, by making personalised nutrition, environment and lifestyle choices, we can prevent many lifestyle-related chronic diseases and create optimal wellness. In other words, by identifying imbalances in our biochemistry early on, we can actually PREVENT lifestyle-related chronic disease or their recurrence.

Enter JOINCIRCLES – the resulting online personalised scientific wellness company that was formed by Dr Heidi van Loggerenberg and Margie Doig-Gander.

In a nutshell, JOINCIRCLES believes that everyone should have access to, and take ownership of, their own medical data (in partnership with their relevant healthcare practitioners). They offer:

Based on their experience and internationally acclaimed research, knowing more about your DNA is the future of medicine. And the important thing to remember is that your DNA is not your destiny! By making better nutrition, environment and lifestyle choices daily, you can fill the ‘gap’ in healthcare and strive for optimal wellness.

Getting Started

  1. Visit their website and take the “Which DNA Test Is Right For Me?” quiz.
  2. There are a number of DNA tests from which to choose – you can purchase them individually or in combination: DNA HEALTH, DNA ESTROGEN, DNA DIET, and DNA SPORT are a good starting point.
  3. Add the relevant test/combination of tests to your basket and it will be delivered in a day or two.
  4. Do the sample cheek swab, book a return courier and wait two weeks to receive your results!

The Cost

The tests range in price from R1 540 to R8 900 (for the full range of tests).

The JOINCIRCLES website is easy to navigate and contains the “why” behind each of the tests. It is a fascinating read and will make you realise just how little you know about your health and unique genetic make-up. Knowledge is power – and investing in one or more of these tests can save you a fortune in medical bills, years of being ill, and time off work!

Natural Over-The-Counter Products For Long Lasting Results

It’s really embarrassing when someone hints at bad breath by offering you a mint or some gum. There’s little you can do in that moment but swallow the mint along with your pride. The truth of the matter is, halitosis (chronic bad breath) is a medical condition that doesn’t discriminate. Everyone and anyone can develop bad breath. And if it's left untreated, this condition can cause plenty of paranoia and anxiety. It can also be an indicator of a more serious underlying health concern. When you think that over 600 species of micro-organisms can live in your mouth – it’s not surprising that anyone can develop bad breath from time to time.

But What Actually Causes It?

As much as 85% to 90% of bad breath is caused by oral factors (in the mouth). This includes tooth decay, bacteria in the mouth, as well as certain medications (anti-depressants, narcotics, antihistamines). Also, foods like onion, garlic, coffee and alcohol, as well as cigarettes contribute towards that dreaded bad breath. And believe it or not, but ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause are non-oral causes of horrible breath, while some serious illnesses like kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, bronchial and lung infections are indicators for bad breath. There's no avoiding it, it does happen to most of us... so the question is, how do we fix it?

Nova Breath To The Rescue

Drinking plenty of water is known to help combat bad breath, but sadly it’s not always enough. The good news is with the launch of Nova Breath – a new medically tested solution to help prevent and treat bad breath – you don’t need to leave those around you breathless for all the wrong reasons.

Their OTC range has an oral product for every preference, whether you like to use a mouthwash, spritz a little mouth spray, suck on lozenges or brush those pearly whites with toothpaste. The ingredients – each with a different function – work together to reduce those wonky odours. The unique clinically tested formulation is enriched with components that keep the ingredients in your mouth to ensure it produces the required change. More than that, it outlasts mints and ensures a fresh breath for up to eight hours.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner - make sure you can kiss with confidence. There’s nothing worse than your partner recoiling as you pucker up.
