There are plenty of reasons to stop by The Big Mouth: the trendy eatery has a great location on the Square, warm, welcoming staff, and an extensive sushi menu. But frankly, we come here for one reason and one reason only — the Oreo Jar. It may not be the most visually appealing dessert, but don’t let that give you any doubts. There’s a downright delicious combination going on here with crunchy crumbled Oreos and chocolatey Nutella mousse. Served in a jar, it makes for easy eating — and it's love at first mouthful.
Where: Nelson Mandela Square, corner of Maude & 5th Streets, Sandton, Johannesburg.
The Fat Zebra has always taken desserts seriously. So it’s especially telling that, while the cakes on offer change regularly, there’s one thing that never changes — their killer Chocolate Torte Slice. This luxurious cake is decadent without being too rich and is served with a dollop of crème fraîche and seasonal berries. The dark, chocolate flavour will leave you wanting more, every time.
Where: Corner 7th Street & 3rd Avenue, Linden, Johannesburg.
Café Del Sol’s Chocolate Tart could easily be the signature dessert on a five-star hotel restaurant menu. It has copious amounts of soft chocolate truffle, creating a high chocolate-to-flour ratio that fudge lovers will adore. A nutty pastry crust adds some balance and provides depth of flavour. This tart simply melts on your tongue.
Where: Café Del Sol Classico, Olivedale Corner Shopping Centre, corner of Olive & President Fouche Roads, Olivedale, Johannesburg & Café Del Sol Botanico, Bryanston Shopping Centre, William Nicol Drive, Bryanston, Johannesburg.
For us, Tortellini D’Oro is, without question, one of the best Italian eateries in Joburg. The perfect combination of fresh ingredients and time-tested techniques are present in every dish but there’s no better showcase for the chef's skills than the Italian Dark Chocolate Ice Cream. The flavour is intense with a subtle hint of fruit and bitter coffee. It has a powerful richness akin to a slice of dense flourless chocolate cake and a smooth, silky texture. Served in an ice cream cup with chocolate biscotti, it’s the perfect dessert.
Where: Oaklands Shopping Centre, corner of Pretoria & Victoria Streets, Oaklands, Johannesburg.
The rich, bittersweet chocolate flavour makes these macaroons from The Patisserie stand out from your average desserts. With their soft, crunchy shell and plenty of soft, intense chocolate inside, it’s natural to compare them to creamy chocolate truffles. A couple of these will result in that delightful chocolate overload that will make you thirst for an ice-cold glass of milk – one of the friendly waitresses can easily organise that for you.
Where: Post Office Centre, corner of Rudd Road & Otto Street, Illovo, Johannesburg.
Walnut Grove may be best known for their designer cakes and stylish ambience but the cupcakes are also standouts. The little, baked creations have a rich flavour, a fluffy texture and fudgy icing. The Ferrero Rocher versions are particularly divine, whipped up with high-quality chocolate and topped with a Ferrero Rocher chocolate. Trust me when I say that you’ll never have an icing more delicious touch your lips.
Where: Sandton City Shopping Centre, corner of Rivonia Road & 5th Street, Sandton, Johannesburg.
Saigon Vietnamese restaurant is an institution for their steaming bowls of stir-fry and fragrant curries, but we can assure you that their desserts also need a mention, especially the Chocolate Den & Trang. This smooth and silky chocolate mousse is made from the finest ingredients and has an unbelievably light texture and is rich without being cloying.
Where: Rivonia Junction, corner Rivonia Road & 7th Avenue, Rivonia, Johannesburg.
If you’re a fan of pastries with the added deliciousness of chocolate, we assume you’re a sucker for pain au chocolat, perhaps more commonly known as chocolate croissants. In that case, we assume you also know that it’s hard to find good ones locally. The charming little spot that is The Whippet makes them amazingly well. While, quite frankly, there isn’t anything on the menu here that we don’t recommend, the light, flaky croissants filled with rich chocolate are at the top of our list. Delicious for breakfast or brunch, order one up with a crème brûlée latte and you’re in for the ultimate indulgence.
Where: Corner 7th Street & 4th Avenue, Linden, Johannesburg.
Licorish Bistro’s bubbling Belgian Chocolate Fondue is in a class of its own. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to be set loose into chocolate heaven. Served with fresh fruit and vanilla sponge cake, the fondue is relatively simple but at the same time tremendously satisfying. The chocolate is superior quality, rich and creamy. After a long, hard week of work, there’s nothing better than sharing this delight with a friend or lover. Just be warned: you will leave feeling ‘chocolate wasted’.
Where: Nicolway Shopping Centre, William Nicol Drive, Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Italian restaurants in Joburg are all over the show. No matter which corner you turn, you will find pizza and pasta galore... but not all of there are worth your time or hard-earned cash. With that said, come with us as we take you on a curated tour of the best Italian restaurants in Joburg.
If you’re a fan of authentic Italian food, there’s no better place to get it than at Ristorante La Trinita in Kyalami. Run by a mother and daughter team, it really is a gem of a restaurant. If ever you go back more than once, both these women will recognise you immediately and Lala, the daughter, will be able to remember exactly what you ate when you first paid them a visit (even if you go back 100 times after that).
Nonna Mia’s Kitchen is known for their delicious pizza, so when you pay them a visit, this is your best bet. They come in various sizes – six, eight or 24 pieces – which will satisfy your craving for something warm and cheesy from the first bite.
Situated in the Colony centre, Pronto is a wonderful Italian restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is fantastic, so it’s definitely recommended that you go all out and order a starter, main and dessert – just be sure to arrive hungry, so that you've got room for everything!
Old Town Italy has opened up shop in Johannesburg! Situated in Jamie's Italian's old spot at Melrose Arch, Old Town Italy offers a deli-style cafe, a sit-down restaurant, and a little corner shop all in one. The Old Town values, regardless of being considered old-fashioned, are held in high regard. The brand’s foundations were built slowly; forged by skill, fortitude, passion and dedication. This celebration of Italian culture dotes on creating a close-knit, family atmosphere. Old Town Italy strives to restore the qualities of personal attention and building meaningful relationships through hearty smiles, high-level product knowledge and providing sound advice generously.
Super Sconto is a family-run restaurant and supermarket where you can pick up all kinds of goodies. The upstairs deli section is where you can find what’s arguably the best sandwich in town: pick a freshly baked panini (small or large) and choose your toppings from the deli counter. Super Sconto also has daily pasta specials, so be on the lookout for those. They’re only open for breakfast and lunch, so just keep this in mind the next time you’re thinking of heading over.
Trattoria Renato Pizzeria is a homely restaurant as authentically Italian as they come – it almost feels like you're in the middle of Italy. When deciding on what to devour, always start with their basic salad – it’s super-simple yet a must-have to whet your appetite. Next, check out the specials board for something different that might just catch your eye, and it'll be well worth it!
Gemelli Cucina Bar is a popular spot in Bryanston where you can treat your taste buds to everything from pasta and meaty dishes to prawns, chicken and so much more. What’s great is that, when it comes to pasta, if you want to share with your table, you can order family-sized bowls. A little bit of everything sounds pretty great to us!
Are you looking for Italian restaurants in Joburg that's not quite within the city? We've got you! Situated in the stunning Muldersdrift area, Casalinga, a fabulous Italian eatery, is perfect to visit for a long, leisurely Sunday lunch spent admiring the country scenery. Why not take the whole family along and make a day of it?
Luca’s does real Italian, and it does it well. Whether you’re in the mood for pizza, pasta or even a main meat dish, you’ll find what you're craving for at this place. Whatever you decide to order, just be sure to leave some space for dessert – let's just say that the tiramisu comes highly recommended.
By far one of our favourite Italian restaurants in Joburg, Café Del Sol is a well-known family-run Italian establishment that only produces top-notch food – they don’t have a stellar reputation for anything, you know. It’s safe to say that, no matter what you order, you won’t be disappointed. This goes for both branches – Café Del Sol and Café Del Sol Botanico. P.S. Both restaurants are winners when it comes to celebrating special occasions.
