Extending The Olive Branch

The Olive Tree Theatre in Marlboro is the brainchild of Ntshieng Mokgoro, an award winning director and playwright. With the Sandton CBD and the Alexandra township at its doorstep, this independent arts centre bridges the divide between class and race, bringing local theatre to audiences of all kinds. On one hand, the work showcased here gives new life to South African performance, migrating away from European theatre models to create a consciousness of the realities of life outside of the glitz and glamour of Sandton. And on the other hand, the theatre exposes residents of the township to theatre in a way they have never seen before. There is no pretense here, the space welcomes one and all into an open theatre environment, where personal expression is valued above all else.

Since 2013, The Olive Tree Theatre has hosted the Women's Theatre Festival. Welcoming both local and international female directors into their space, they encourage women to share their stories and experiences, using their own voices. The theatre also invites in young artists looking for a platform to test their work. Describing themselves as a "melting pot for South African arts and culture", the Olive Tree Theatre stages works of all kinds,  from dance, to spoken word, full-length plays and music events. Their venue is also just a cool place to hang out with friends. Take a seat at the bar and enjoy the sights and sounds going on in all corners of this unique Jozi gem.

Olive Tree Theatre

The Olive Tree Film Club

The Olive Tree Film Club is an extension of the work pioneered by the theatre. Begun by aspiring filmmaker Banele P. Mtebele, this community development platform introduces Alexandra audiences to the magic and power of film. Noticing that the culture of watching films in Alexandra was more about status than entertainment, Mtebele endeavored to create a platform for young filmmakers to showcase their work. The Olive Tree Film Club is free to attend, with free popcorn and refreshments as well, breaking boundaries by inviting anyone with an interest in film to come and watch, engage and enjoy. The film club celebrates mostly African film, but also screens international titles with relevant messages to their audience. From dramas, to biopics, documentaries and kung fu action blockbusters, there is something for every kind of film fundi here.

Why Visit Olive Tree Theatre

We can think of a couple of reasons to pop by this quirky arts centre. Firstly, it's highly accessible - just off the M1, it sits right between Sandton and Johannesburg East. Secondly, it's a super cool place to hang out with deep thinkers, creators and ordinary people. Finally, there are no expectations here. Unlike formal theatre spaces, the Olive Tree Theatre doesn't restrict audiences in any way. Clap when you feel the performers deserve applause, leave if you are bored, or celebrate their triumphant success with a series of ululations. We hope this is enough to convince you to pay them a visit as soon as possible!

The First Step Into Maboneng Precinct

If there is one thing that everyone who has been to this precinct can agree on, it's that it really has a vibe of its own. Something that just makes you feel a sense of freedom, reminds you of the beauty that people who aren't from Africa tell and remind you about when they use the terms - Africa, The Motherland.

The Maboneng Precinct Johannesburg

It's Johannesburg's creative hub where people from all walks of life come to feel like they really belong and aren't afraid to express themselves through fashion, music, food, crafts and a whole lot more. The Maboneng Precinct turned what was considered to be a place where tons of Zulu people stay to an urban African precinct where everyone can come and enjoy themselves.

Walking The Streets

Honestly, you don't need to be in a restaurant or store to feed off the amazing energy that Maboneng has.

Walking on the streets of the precinct is enough to show you just how much talent the country has to offer, how much character Africans have and just trigger wistful nostalgia that makes you want to stay. You will see visual art which includes graffiti on the walls, painters, crafts as well as people selling their wares.

You might also bump into some cycle riders along the way, care-free and enjoying the views of this city.

The Maboneng Precinct Johannesburg

Although there is a stew of diversity at The Maboneng Precinct, one thing that brings everyone together is creative and artistic natures that can't help but shine through.

The majority of the world loves food and if you have not been to Carpe Diem Restaurant & Bar then you have definitely been missing out.

Hidden in the sweet spot of Sandton, this modern contemporary restaurant on the infamous Grayston Drive is just the place you need to visit. We know everybody appreciates safe parking, this spot is situated inside a place where you have your car and license scanned (so don't forget license). Their safety measures are on point.

Carpe Diem

The Best Of Both Worlds

On entry, the first thing you see are the beautiful pieces of art and the stairs that lead you the amazing dining experience that. Carpe Diem has a very warm, welcoming setting, just allows you to feel relaxed and inspired by vintage touches and warm lighting.

They have really beautiful views, matching really well with the romantic vibe that they have going on. The restaurant boasts with executive private dining room so if the plan was a big spread for client, or just a family get together - you have found the spot that will give you the privacy you need.

Carpe Diem

The Food

I have one thing to say about the food, lovely. They have chefs that are always at work ready to serve up something delicious and heart warming.

Its always refreshing to see diversity on a menu, with foods like chicken fillet stuffed with feta, herbs and caramelised pistachio to a good succulent prime rib - what more can you ask for. I have to say though, I am not a salad type of girl but I surely loved their chicken salad (I was hooked and sold at avocado and honey and mustard dressing). Their apple crumble is to die for!

Carpe Diem

The Bar

Right when you think that was the end of it, downstairs sits their bar. This spot is also great and also has a certain area where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh breeze and futuristic buildings that Sandton has to offer.

The drinks menu is also filled with options. They sometimes have amazing events hosted here. The most recent that I attended was the "Shades of Autumn" by the BailaAfrika team, this is a Kizomba/Cuban Salsa social where you get to dance the night away. This is a spontaneous event that brings all the dance and Afro Latin culture lovers out to have a good time.

Bias: I love Afro Latin culture, so rich with commonality with the African culture so I can vouch for it - something worth trying.

It's A Carpe Diem...

Lastly, I will encourage you to really consider checking out this spot, it is worth it. The food is marvelous, the vibe - warming and well its just a breath of fresh air.

Live music is a great way to experiment, to get creative as an artist and get you moving to the music. The sweetest melodies are paired perfectly with good food in our books. We've got just the spot to get you started.

The scintillating idea of a romantic and spontaneous spot to relax is just what anyone needs after a long day or week, so consider a divine break away to Truffles On The Park. This lovely bistro and bar sits – somewhat ironically – in Sandton's Mushroom Farm Park and promises to take dining to a whole new level.

Truffles

Good Food And A Botanical Romance...

Inspired by its surroundings, the bistro tells the tale of a love affair with botanics that is relatively new to Joburg. When you hear about a place that boasts playful palate eats and an inspiring environment, what is left but to indulge in it?

Dive right in to the creative menu. I'm going to come right out and say it, my absolute favourite was the sauteed mushroom truffle risotto; absolutely took my breath away. Melt in you mouth does not even begin to explain the experience of indulging in this dish. What really stood out for me was the presentation, unexpected and witty - effortless elegance beyond what you can imagine.

Truffles On The Park have scrumptious eats for vegans too – mouthwatering dishes such as warm Moroccan chickpea and roasted tomato salad or burnt corn and avo with red onions. This was fresh and bursting with diverse flavour.

Truffles head chef, Lance Louise, aims to fill everyone's tummy with happiness through the effortless flair that he and the team literally bring to the table. And he gets it right. “My passion is to use local fresh organic produce that is sustainably sourced and farmed. My food style is rich in flavour with some unusual and unexpected twists but always unpretentious and accessible."

If you're a foodie, put Truffles On The Park down as one for the books.

Truffles

A Drink With A Difference

Billed as a botanical bar, Truffles has well over 40 clear spirits infused with floral and plant-derived ingredients, ranging from the botanical inspired theme with lavender, rose and violet, elderflower, hibiscus and more.

Their beautiful selection includes something fruity too, with cocktails strategically made to fit the essence of what botanicals are about – be it through the use of subtle colours or effortless garnishes.

Truffles

Touches Of Romance

Ryan Illgner, a reputable Interior Design Honours graduate and partner of the infamous Blacksmith - worked on the decor to add some inspiring, creative, romantic touches to Truffles. It's the botanical features that make you feel you're sitting in a magical garden instead of the city.

Truffles

Pooches are welcome

Of course, Sandton's Mushroom Farm Park is a favourite to many who run or walk with their pets. So feel free to drop in at Truffles with your best friend, as long as they are kept on their leashes.

See you there!

Ratz Bar

One of the best spots to get your drink on in old town would be Ratz Bar. This is a prime cocktail spot too – that's why they're on this list, right? One of the most sought-after designer drinks at Ratz would be the Ratz Poison which is made up of Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Cane, cherry lemonade, pineapple juice and a Stroh float.

Six Cocktails

If you're after interesting shooters and mixed drinks then Six Cocktails is your kind of dig. One of our favourites would be the Absent Without Leave which consists of apple and lemon infused Absinthe. Live a little!

La Santa Muerte

We love La Santa Muerte so much that we can't choose which cocktail of their's we should praise more. My dear, do yourself a favour and go grab yourself one el Hefe and one frozen margarita... whatever happens after that is your business – just make sure to send us photos.

cocktails

Jo'Anna Melt Bar

For a very long time, the Jo'annnna Melt Bar has seen the suburb of Melville through the good and the bad times. This drinking hole has put its fair amount of smiles on plenty faces. The reason? Its cocktails, of course. Our top pick would be the apricot and ginger siesta which contains silver tequila, apricot extract, fresh lime juice, aromatic bitters and ginger ale.

Liquid Blue

If you ever find yourself in Melville over a weekend or party night then pull in to Liquid Blue. Go straight to the bar and say "I would like an apple and rum fondue jar, please." Don't forget the word please. This drink will blow your mind. It's got three types of Bacardi, lemon juice, homemade chocolate fondue syrup and sour apple topped with an apple fan.

Mootee Bar

Mootee Bar was named as one of the top ten new international cocktail bars for 2018. Their menu is unlike any other Melville restaurant. Each cocktail is inspired by an African folk story and has a visual representation of taste, designed by artist Jared Hurwitz. With 120 seats, an outside rooftop deck, open air alley seating and a private lounge, Mootee Bar is a must-visit Melville venue. Try out their milktart brandy, sparkling Umqombothi or the crystal clear brandy and coke.

Cocktails

Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen is Melville's very own 1920's inspired speakeasy. Their menu specialty is whiskey, but they offer crafty G&T's and their very own HK Lager drafts as well.

Love Me So

Situated on Melville's fourth avenue, Love Me So offers something truly unique. This Asian-fusion ramen bar opened its doors in 2017. Their cocktail menu is divided into classic tipples and Asian flavour inspired drinks. We recommend the Hidden Dragon, which consists of fresh basil, tequila, lemon, lime and pineapple.

The Location

When the team opened The Rock Diner in early 2018, they quickly realised that Design Quarter is the place to be. Since then, The Rock Diner has experienced incredible support from patrons in the area. Their thinking is, if the business does well, the area does well. So far, this ideology has paid off. Design Quarter is known for its trend-setting retail and commercial tenants, so it is only fitting that The Rock Diner does the same. The design is edgy, eloquent, over the top, and fitting for any hotel restaurant in Dubai.

The Food

Let's (happily) fall face first into the food, shall we? With most dishes made to boast rich, smokey flavours (a top food trend to watch out for in 2018  – Shawn called it!), the kitchen has its pulse on the international culinary world. Dishes include grilled pizzas, pastas, steaks and chicken skewered on swords. The restaurant also encourages sharing, where diners order a couple of plates for the table. The menu also features a range of traditional main dishes. For single diners, there is the option of dining at the bar upstairs... but more about that later.

The Rock Diner

Décor & Design

At the top of the interior design and layout game, renowned Greek designer Alexandra Nicolou took it upon himself to turn The Rock Diner into a fashion-forward wonderland. The main restaurant seats up to 60 and is a moody mix of parquet wood floor, dark green marble, heavy wood panels, exposed brickwork, high-gloss black ceilings and high window frames. The outside courtyard has been given a facelift with a 3.5m olive tree, an ample amount of outdoor seating, custom-made tables and chairs and as a rustic gelato and pizza corner.

The Rock Diner

Two private dining areas include a wine room in which the vintages are the hero, and The Living Room with a live garden wall. The menu is an adventure in Greek, Japanese, Italian and American influences, which foodie Miles Kubheka was here to explore. The staircase is the backbone of this design, and it is impossible to resist seeing where it leads. The Carnelian Tapas Bar has a level of style and detail you would expect from a Hollywood set designer – which is thanks to Tarryn Fisher.

The Carnelian Tapas Bar
The answer to a tapas lover's sweatiest dream can be found on the second floor of The Rock Diner. Carnelian serves small shareable plates that have been cooked and constructed so well that it'd make the most popular Instagrammers blush.

The Rock Diner

Stand out dishes include the pork belly served with in-house made kimchi that has a decent amount of bite, duck confit served with beets, and arancini stuffed with mozzarella. The bar also serves Prosecco on tap, has a great variety of whiskies and a walk-in cellar stocked to the brim with both vintage and popular wines.

The Rock Diner

The bartenders are all friendly and well trained in the art of mixing up a good drink. From old-fashioned whisky bases to gin and tonics fit for royalty, there is something for everyone. We highly recommend the Captain Jack Sparrow: spiced rum and bourbon mixed with lemon juice, pepper syrup and Campari.

These cocktails are a twist on classic flavours and include the Chocolate and Orange Sidecar, the Blueberry Sour, the Unique Cést Chic, the Marshmallow Alex and The Maison – all of which are sure to tantalise your taste buds!

In addition, exclusive cocktails inspired by the three #BisquitCreator partnerships will be released each week:

1. Cassandra Twala is a creator with intention. From her work as producer of the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair and Winter Sculpture Fair, Cassandra is known for her considered approach to aesthetics and a dedication to excellence in her craft.
2. Qhama Xhali, better known to his friends and followers as Clixwell, is a content creator extraordinaire. When he’s not presenting SABC3’s #TheManCave, Clix and his friends are exploring everything South Africa has to offer.
3. Menzi Mcunu is an Afrocentric Gentleman known for his carefully curated lifestyle and consistently dapper outfits. This tastemaker has done everything from creating made-to-measure suits, to style consulting, brand partnerships and event curation.
An exciting tapas-style menu has been developed by well-known cook and current MKR SA contestant Luyanda Mafanya. From salmon, pate and carpaccio to frangipane tarts and macarons, these meals are a delightful accompaniment to any cocktail or long drink you choose to enjoy at Maison Bisquit.

Many people believe that Cognac should be enjoyed neat with a few ice cubes and consider mixing it with other beverages a sin! However, this view could not be further from the truth. The use of Cognac in cocktails goes back as far as the early 1800’s when the cocktail was invented - it was known as a “barman’s best friend”. These new cocktail recipes will demonstrate the versatility and taste profile of Bisquit Cognac in a delicious, exciting manner. Because everything is #BetterWithBisquit.

When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.

- Sonnet 55, Shakespeare

It's been at least five years since I last stepped foot into that packed pub and grub that flanks the corner of Bram Fischer and Mimosa. I've driven past it more times than I'd care to admit but each time I've tried to convince myself. "pop in for a beer;" "maybe grab something to eat;" "you owe the place a visit..." that type of stuff. Well, I finally succeeded in convincing myself to stop, or should I say that my stomach managed to get my brain to pull over in Northcliff.

Thunder Gun

The Community

Most likely Joburg's oldest steakhouse, Thunder Gun is turning 50 years old, so it'd be fitting to pay homage to this locale by talking about where it's come from, where it is, and where it's going. This cowboy (in the true sense of the word) themed restaurant has seen its fair share of generations grow from the kiddies menu to the wine list. The reason why Thunder Gun has been so successful for so long is the fact that little has changed since the establishment opened in 1968. They still use the same basting, the same steak rub, and serve peppermint crisp tart as if it's stuck in the 70s. Jokingly the only thing that's changed is the prices.

One thing that Thunder Gun does differently is its investment in the community. Above and beyond annual charity drives and support to local NGOs, Thunder Gun offers discounts to pensioners and Pretoria and Standard Bank Old Boys. The restaurant is also involved with local schools and sports clubs, such as the Linden and Rooseveldt Bowls Clubs and Randburg Cricket Club.

Thunder Gun

The Food

Thunder Gun is big on meat (it is a steak ranch type of gig after all). If you're not in the know, it'd be worth telling you that they serve 1Kg of pork ribs. Don't think twice and just order the stuff - it's so good. The basting sauce has been not changed since the late 60s and I hope it never does. Other fun things on the menu include good steaks, lekker burgers, and succulent seafood. Thunder Gun also boasts a kiddies menu served to little ones under 12. Desserts are awesome as Thunder Gun has made a point of sticking to the classics. As I've mentioned before, they still serve peppermint crisp tarts and chocolate brownies.

In conclusion, whether you've been there 50 times before or never before, it's worth pulling in, grab a drink, order a mouthful of good food, and have a good time. It's good for family fun, chilling with friends, or for catching up on whichever sports is playing on the big screen.

Roxanne's Rum Eatery

The latest addition to the Pineslopes Boulevard family, Roxanne's Rum Eatery is the place to kick off your night with a bang. From amazing food, interesting cocktails, neon lights and good music, this bar/restaurant sure knows how to set the vibe for the rest of your evening. Since we were getting ready to party the night away, we grabbed some delicious finger foods to go along with our fancy cocktails. We tried out the Crispy Squid & Curly Fries and the Tempura Battered Riblets and Curly Fries. They were YUM! As for the cocktails, if you like sipping on something sweet, we recommend the Dita Von Teese which arrived with a massive Hibiscus flower on top. Defiitely grabbed a few of those.

Roco Mamas

If you're looking for a chilled night out, then Roco Mamas is a good bet. Not only is it nestled between all the other hip and happening places in case you change your mind on that chilled night out, but it also has some of the best burgers in the business. If you haven't tried any of their Limited Edition burgers, you're totally missing out! We remember the days of the Slaw Daddy and we just couldn't get enough! And the chilli cheese fries - a MUST with any burger and ice-cold draught!

Party

Stones

Yes, Stones does still exist and it's still as cool and pumping as it was all those years ago. This venue is an oldie but a goodie and has everything you need for an awesome night out on the town. Get out on the dance floor and show off your moves to good dance tunes and crowd pleasing oldies spun by the resident DJ; play a few rounds of pool with your mates; and down a few shooters at the bars. Just remember to be responsible, okay? They also host a few events here and there, so make sure you visit their Facebook page to see what's coming up.

Beerhouse Fourways

Popular. Busy. Always pumping. Music. Beer. That's all we can say about Beerhouse Fourways. They have the biggest beer variety available in the city, making it a great spot if you love beer or are looking to sample a few different types. They have everything and anything from fruity, playful, light and aromatic to refreshing, complex, heavy and dark. There's a beer for all tastes. Visit here often enough and you'll become a beer expert for sure! Other than the wide variety in beer, they also host a few good parties including their famous Silent Disco. Visit their Facebook page to keep up to date with the latest events and happenings.

Ballbreakers

This pool hall has been around for donkeys years! It's a great place to be if you're looking to unwind after a long week at the office, grab a beer or two with your mates or brush up on your pool table skills. And the great thing about it is the fact that it's within walking distance of all the other party spots in the centre.

Party

Billy The BUMS

Pineslopes Boulevard wouldn't be Pineslopes Boulevard without Billy's! This one is yet another oldie but goodie that many of us have visited at some point in our lives. This was the place to be for ladies night, it was also a cool hangout for varsity students from UJ (speaking from experience) and for the wiser (and older) folk to grab a draught and chill. They play party favourites and golden oldies that'll have you dancing all night long. Not to mention their cocktails!

Adrenaline Café

This one is a place we have never seen before until just recently - Adrenaline Cafe, situated just down the way from Ballbreakers. We walked past and this place was pumping with loud dance music and loads of flashing lights. We don't know how we have missed this one in the past! They too host quite a few events over the weekends, so don't forget to check out their lineup!

SkyBar

A bar in the sky, it doesn't get more extreme than that! The SkyBar is a must if you're into the whole extreme side of life. There's abseiling, bungee jumping and climbing activities around this bar, as well as the opportunity to get a 360-degree view of Fourways and surrounds while sipping on your favourite beer. Just make sure you get there early to experience the SkyBar as it closes at 21:00 (20:00 on Sundays and public holidays). We will definitely be going up there when we next visit the area!
