Belle’s Patisserie, established in 2010, has humble beginnings. Having started in a home garage, the bakery provided exquisite patisserie items to a small market. Through consistent excellence and a commitment to customer service, the bakery grew in size and popularity, winning “Best Johannesburg Patisserie” for years in a row.
Owned and run exclusively by women, the award-winning Belle's Patisserie is a proudly South African company. It is no surprise that their most popular item is their iconic Rainbow Cake – it epitomises Belle's Patisserie's ethos, their staff and their much-loved clientele.
In line with their pursuit of excellence in both quality and customer service, Belle’s Patisserie has minimised presence in the retail space. Their belief is that they can better serve the needs of their clients with personal contact, and the majority of their business is conducted in this way.
Of course, for those who want a standard item, and who don’t need advice, they have simplified the process by partnering with Uber Eats and Mr Delivery. They also have a comprehensive online ordering facility through our website at www.bellespatisserie.co.za.
Simply put, Belle’s Patisserie is focused on bringing joy through cake, and their entire focus is on bringing a deliciously unparalleled taste experience to you. Of course, we're kicking this list off with the greatest! They have the word "pie" in their name, so you know it's got to be good. Fortunately for them (and for us), Maggie's Home Of the Chicken Pie is off-the-hook amazing. Maggie (whoever she is) stuffs as much filling as possible into a traditional golden crust pastry. Fillings like chicken, steak and kidney, mince, and spinach and feta are winners in our books. It's a super place to relax, people watch, and soak up the Gauteng sun.
In the mood for homemade, flaky goodness stuffed with tender chicken and melt-in-your-mouth beef? Then head to Nice On 4th, the comfortable spot in Parkhurst that's a hit with the Joburg brunch crowd. The freshly baked pies here are seriously good and come served with a fresh mixed herb salad or new potatoes and veggies.
Yup, the old sports pub hidden behind the N1 on-ramp in Roodepoort is not only known for its authentic South African cooking (and rugby streaming). The menu boasts a beef, bacon and Guinness pie so good that folks have been known to travel all the way from the Far East (Benoni, as it were). But the boat does not stop there when it comes to the Green & Gold pie train. The pub also serves a lamb and mint pie, a cheeseburger pie (yup, it's as amazing as it sounds), and for good measure, a classic cottage pie... technically it's a pie. All pies are served with chips and Castle Draught (at the time of writing, at least).
Illovo's very own authentic French restaurant and bakery is home to delicious dishes. Beyond its petit fours and salmon fish cakes, La Patisserie has some of the best pies in Johannesburg... by far. The chicken pie is slightly more popular than the classic beef pie and is served with the salad of the day. Seeing as cooking is a serious art form and a national sport in France, we're glad to have a little bit of the land of the Franks in Jozi.
In the mood for a contemporary café that qualifies as a breakfast, brunch and sandwich shop but spins out some of the best pies in town? 2B Cuisine is known not only for its sandwiches, pizzas, and burgers, but also for its oxtail, red wine and rosemary pie, served with a rocket salad and Parmesan. It's an absolute must for flaky crust lovers like us.
