What Is It?

Evil is the chilling account of the teenage years of Erik Ponti, a victim of bullying. Voted one of the top plays of the Imaginate Youth Festival in Edinburgh in 2016, the South African production premiered at the National School of the Arts 2019 Festival of the Arts. It then went on to play to critical acclaim at the Assitej Cradle of Creativity in Cape Town, the Hilton Arts Festival and RedFest. The startling performance of actor Jaques de Silva has received enthusiastic praise.

Evil is hard-hitting and poses questions on how we cope when confronted with extreme situations. This is a must-see, thought-provoking and challenging production for all and is presented by the Auto & General Theatre on the Square.

The Auto & General Theatre on the Square delivers world-class productions, catering to a wide variety of audiences. From stand-up comedy, to drama, kiddies theatre and musicals, the Theatre on the Square has it all. If you have never visited this classy Sandton performance centre, then now is the time. Adorned in red velvet textures, the venue screams upmarket cabaret with a South African twist. Check out their 'Wall of Fame', which features all the talents who have graced the stage over the years. The bar is always the centre of attraction just before the start of a show. Serving up sweet wines, whisky and non-alcoholic drinks, this is the perfect place to prepare yourself for the wonder of stage magic.

Theatre on the Square

The 200-seater main theatre is comfortable and spacious. Again, the red seats give the auditorium a feeling of worldliness. Of course, being right in the heart of Sandton at Nelson Mandela Square, you would expect nothing less. But, if you have ever imagined what it might be like to visit an independent theatre space in London or New York, this may be as close as you can get while still on Jozi homeland.

Between October to December 2019, the Theatre on the Square will be hosting a fantastic line-up of shows. Here are our top picks for the season:

Fawlty Flowers

There is only one Fawtly Towers - the BBC's most popular sitcom ever made. Starring John Cleese as the slightly out-of-his-head English hotel manager, Basil Fawty, Fawlty Towers still has fans to this day. Comedians and theatre professionals, Annie Robinson and Mark Mulder, proudly claim themselves as the South African Fawtly fan faction.

Bringing you Fawlty Flowers! at the Theatre on the Square in October, Annie and Mark will treat you like a dinner guest at the infamous Torquay Hotel! Come and enjoy a little British wit and nonsense with them.

Gertrude Stein and a Companion

October is South African Pride Month. Come and celebrate your diverse identity at the Theatre on the Square with Gertrude Stein and a Companion, directed by Chris Weare.

20th-Century poet and novelist, Gertrude Stein and her lifelong partner, Alice B. Toklas, defied the rules of gender and sexuality in a time when it carried far greater consequence. Roaming in literary circles with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemmingway and Picasso, Stein and Tolkas became icons of their time.

Gertrude Stein and a Companion is set in Bohemian Paris. Exploring Stein and Tolkas' complex relationship, the play is sensitive and charming. Whether you are celebrating Joburg Pride, or are simply in search of a cleverly written play, this is a must-see. Get your tickets now!

My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish and I'm In Therapy!

Closing off 2019 at the Theatre on the Square is Steve Solomon's hilarious family dramedy, My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish and I'm In Therapy! Starring lead actor Michael Richard, this play is "one part lasagna, one part kreplach and two-parts Prozac". You need not be Jewish or Italian (or in therapy) to resonate with the stories based on Solomon's family. All you need is to know what it's like to leave a family dinner with a headache and heartburn.

End your year with this side-splitting look at what it means to be part of an eclectic family. When yours gets to be too much over the holiday season, the theatre will always be there to help you see the lighter side of life.

Sandton City

Imagine a place where the best international brands and everyday leisure and entertainment meet. A place rich in Afro-cosmopolitan glamour, with a distinct South African flair. This is Sandton City. With over 300 local and international retailers, this retail destination is a must-visit for fashionistas and foodies.

While it may be difficult to believe, just over half a century ago the Sandton CBD was nothing more than farmland and estates. With the development of Sandton City in the early 1970s, the suburb began its transformation into the richest retail mile in Africa. The original mall covered only 50 000m² (that's a quarter of the space it now occupies).

In 2011, the mall underwent massive reconstruction, bringing Sandton shoppers more glitz, glamour and gourmet food. Three years later, the Diamond Walk premiered. This exclusive retail space sits between Sandton City's upper level and the Sandton Sun and InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers hotels. Showcasing all things glittered and gold, this stylish walkway features some of the world's most coveted brands.

Eating & Drinking

Of course, Sandton City wouldn't be worth visiting without a few great restaurants. Luckily, this premium mall boasts more than just a few impressive eateries to enjoy in between shopping sprees. Here are our top three picks:

Doppio Zero

Doppio Zero makes real food, real good. Serving up artisan breads, pizzas and Mediterranean fare, as well as an array of vegan meal options. The restaurant recently underwent a makeover - debuting a new interior design concept and a sweet range of Belgian chocolate desserts and treats, delightfully dubbed 'Coco-Me'. If you haven't visited the upgraded restaurant yet, be sure to stop by on your next trip to Sandton City.

JB's Corner

JB's Corner is a firm Sandton City favourite. Offering patrons everything from steaks, to salads and gourmet burgers, this restaurant is always abuzz. They also pride themselves on having the best sushi in Sandton. Don't take our word for it, pay them a visit to determine your own verdict.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1iafE2jiap/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Walnut Grove

Officially Sandton City's longest-running restaurant, Walnut Grove is famous for their cakery and confections. Red velvet, chocolate, rainbow or cheesecake, they have it all. Paired with one of their gourmet coffees, teas or milkshakes, this is sweet tooth heaven. Walnut Grove's main menu is quite alluring too, featuring a feast of Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Bring the kids along, as there is a special menu just for them.

Retail & Entertainment

Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton, Carrol Boyes and Apple, all under one roof. Sandton City is the premiere shopping destination for international style in Johannesburg. Visit Calvin Klein Jeans, D’ORÉ, Diesel, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Armani Jeans and Billionaire Italian Couture for your runway-inspired threads.

Get the kiddies fashion sorted at Earthchild, Koco Bino or Naartjie. These top children's fashion brands will have your little one looking super stylish, but without compromising on comfort or durability.

In terms of entertainment, Sandton City offers shoppers family-friendly excitement and experiences which you wouldn't find anywhere else. Spend a day exploring all that the mall has to share, including BT Games, Toy Kingdom, Hamleys, Heroes of Games and Comics and the only LEGO certified store in the country. Afterwards, you can wind down at Ster-Kinekor with a family fun movie and loads of popcorn.

Nelson Mandela Square

Nelson Mandela Square adjoins Sandton City, together making up the largest retail complex in Africa. While much smaller in size than the mall (only 1,000sqm), the Square still attracts over one million local and international visitors a month. Offering shoppers a taste of heritage, culture and fine dining, Nelson Mandela Square is undoubtedly one of our top tourist destinations. The open-air European style piazza is a great place to take a snap shot of yourself with the iconic Mandela statue. Or, you can shop till you drop at their 88 retail outlets. Refresh your spirits with glorious South African steaks, curries and desserts, or take a trip around the world, indulging in French wines, tapas and Italian coffee.

Fine Dining

Celebrating a milestone birthday, anniversary or achievement? The Square should be your go-to dining destination. Meat lovers are well treated here at The Butcher Shop & Grill, Trumps Grillhouse and Rocomamas. There are also a couple of family-friendly eateries, so you can bring the whole brood along for a fancy dinner out.

For fine Italian dining there is Septimo, with fresh pasta, bread and coffee to keep you going. They make everything from scratch here, including their famous sauces. This is the perfect date night restaurant. With the awesome Sandton vibe and twinkly city lights, you will fall in love (whether it be with the food, the Square or your partner) in no time.

Couture

Nelson Mandela Square takes international fashion to another level. Their list of retailers features only the best from Europe, Asia, the USA and Africa. But, don't fret too much about your pocket - there are some budget friendly options here too, including Factorie and Forever 21. This is the ideal shopping complex for a mom and daughter bonding session or girls shopping spree. It's also a wonderful window shopping destination, it never hurts to look and dream does it?

Check out our article on the best places to shop at Nelson Mandela Square before heading out with your credit cards at the ready.

Theatre on the Square

Finally, there is the pinnacle of entertainment and culture at Nelson Mandela Square - the Auto & General Theatre. Hosting numerous theatre shows, music performances and comedy skits throughout the year, this is one of Joburg's best theatre venues. The ambience of this theatre screams classic cabaret - with a wine bar, red carpet and intimate stage, it's the best alternative to popular theatre. There are also a number of children's shows to take the kids to during the holidays.

And the winner is...

We could never pick a top dog between these two prime shopping centres. They both offer world-class fashion, food and entertainment. So, be like everyone else and stroll between the two! The Gautrain station is just a few metres away, so you really have no excuse not to visit both Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square.

What Is It?

Gertrude Stein and a Companion is a tender story about love, life and loss. Set in bohemian Paris, the play chronicles the extraordinary relationship between American modernist author and poet Gertrude Stein and her lifelong partner Alice B. Toklas. Both Stein and Toklas refused to bow to societal standards of gender and sexuality, preferring to carve their own paths. Their circle of friends was nothing to snicker at either, including the likes of Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald and Picasso.

Immerse yourself in the ambiance of early 20th century Paris, and in the complex relationship between Stein and Toklas. Director Chris Weare masterfully directs his actresses, delivering a sensitive story with tact and utmost respect.

Whether you are celebrating Joburg Pride, or are simply in search of a cleverly written play, Gertrude Stein and a Companion is a must-see.

Going to midday music concerts may seem like an activity only meant for music scholars or theatre critics. But, the average Joe could enjoy the soothing sounds of a jazz band or forty piece orchestra just as much. In fact, we think that popping into a noon time music show is a great way to de-stress and reboot before tackling the rest of the work day.

Luckily, there are three notable venues in the city which offer Joburg natives the chance to chill out to some tunes in the middle of the day:

The Auto & General Theatre on the Square

This 200-seat theatre venue is tucked away just opposite the extravagant Nelson Mandela Square restaurant boulevard in Sandton. They were the first theatre of their kind to introduce a lunchtime classical music concert. Conceptualized over a decade ago, this feature is now a regular Friday event. Shows usually take place at around 1:00 pm on Fridays, with tickets available at the Box Office until thirty minutes prior to the start of the show. Tickets prices are often capped at *R50, and include entrance to the show, a play bill and tea and biscuits after the show.

The theatre has already booked a stellar range of classical performers for their lunchtime concerts until 24 May 2019. Audiences can expect everything from guitar and violin duets to an ensemble of Argentinean Tango Music. On Friday, 26 April 2019 the theatre will present a Pre-Freedom Day musical tribute concert performed by Pops Mohammed. The concert is set to explore the rich tradition of African indigenous music and instruments in honour of the 25th anniversary of our country's democracy.

The Wits School of Arts Music Division

The Wits School of Arts music division present a weekly midday concert in the Great Hall on the universities Main Campus in Braamfontein. These musical showcases often feature some of the divisions most promising students, as well as acclaimed classical and jazz musicians. The best thing about this concert however, is that admission is free! (The only downside is that you may have to battle a couple of harried students to find a decent parking on campus.)

The lunchtime concerts at Wits occasionally take place on Wednesdays from 1:15 - 1:50 pm. Check the university website for further details on upcoming shows. If you have the time, also check out The Olives and Plates Alumni House on West Campus after the show. Their carrot cake is to die for!

Details: University of the Witwatersrand | 1 Jan Smuts Avenue, Braamfontein, Johannesburg | Tel: 011 717 1000

The Joburg Theatre

It is almost impossible to miss the imposing figure of the Joburg Theatre over the city. This massive theatre precinct hosts every kind of performance event imaginable. From international musicals to children's theatre and dance spectaculars - they have it all. Speaking of dance, the theatre often stages daytime showings of classical ballets performed by the Joburg Ballet company. While this is not a music concert per say, the Joburg Ballet does frequently perform with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. So, if you find yourself drifting off during a court scene, gaze down into the orchestra pit for a change of scenery. (You can often spot the percussionists getting up to mischief when they think no one is looking.)

Melville Comedy Club

The Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose Arch closed down in early May, much to the dismay of comedy fans. But, there was really no need to worry, as the Goliath's had been busy setting up a new comedy club in trendy Melville. The Melville Comedy Club officially opened in February 2019. It is now well on its way to becoming one of the top comedy clubs in Joburg. The stage has featured big names such as Nina Hastie, Lihle Msimang, Mark Banks and, of course, the three Goliaths - Jason, Nicholas and Donovan. This up-and-coming comedy spot also welcomes newcomers to the comedy scene to risk it all on their stage. If you are looking for a super cool vibe and some serious laughs, check out the Melville Comedy Club.

What Is It?

Eva and Neo, best friends and partners in a suburban hair salon reach crossroads in their personal lives. Stumbling into an adult toy shop one night, they make some acquisitions and this inspires an idea... With a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour and a whole lot of heart, versatile Tumi Morake and Vanessa Frost play many familiar characters including the elderly Muslim and Jewish women who return weekly to have their hair set...and sample new toys!

By arrangement with the Auto & General Theatre on the Square, the show will be presented by Bloom & Stone, a creative agency and production company that focuses on creating meaningful and accessible content. Vanessa says the meeting of minds in the process was synchronous and that extensive research went into the writing of the script. They found themselves exploring heartfelt and hard truths in order to present a potent message about female sexuality and desire.
