Here, residents and visitors can enjoy a slow side of life, enjoying a variety of outdoor recreational activities and even a spot of shopping. A few venues and location to note for your next visit includes the well-kept Alberton Driving Range if you're keen to practice your swing; the Jackson Dam perfect for an afternoon hike, fishing, walking your furry four-legged companions and getting some sunshine; and the Rietvlei Zoo Farm offering a Picnic Park, as well as lots of space to mountain bike, hiking or joining a park run; and lastly, the Alberton City Shopping Centre, complete with a dynamic mix of local and international brands from over 98 stores.

Situated alongside the N12 Highway, diverse and historic Benoni is well-known as being the setting of the 2005 MTV-inspired movie, Crazy Monkey: Straight Outta Benoni. And let's not forget, the Oscar-winning actress, Charlize Theron, was born in Benoni. It is also known as a great suburb for first time home buyers due to the area's properties being great value for money. Other than making a great residential area, there are also a few great places to visit. Northmead Square not only offers a lovely retail experience for visitors and residents alike, but also brought movie cinemas back to the suburb (in case you didn't know, the last cinema closed in the 80s). Next up, if you'd like to brush up on some local history, be sure to visit the Benoni Museum. And have you ever visited a mall that's located on a steam boat? If not, Lakeside Mall on the southern banks of the Civic Lake is an absolute must.

During the hot summers, Wild Waters is just the place to keep cool while having a blast on the water slides and rides. And lastly, shop up a storm at one of the Joburg's biggest malls, East Rand Mall.

During the Gold Rush boom in the late 1880s, Brakpan was just considered as a suburban area within Benoni and only became it's own little town in 1912. Situated between Benoni and Springs, this town also centres around the industrial and mining industry, but boasts many distinct areas filled with activities and entertainment and residential communities. One of the top attractions in the area is the exciting Carnival City, shaped just like a circus marquee! This entertainment hub offers visitors everything from a buzzing casino floor and family fun to restaurants, concerts and much more. Other than letting the kids blow off some steam at the Magic Company at Carnival City, why not let them bounce themselves tired at Wi:Jump, the East Rand ultimate trampoline park! Kota Joe - Milkshakes

Okay, this might not be a hidden gem, but it's still worth mentioning. Kota Joe has a rather large milkshake menu. Some of the ones we have tried include Lime, Lindt Chocolate (no longer on the menu), Crunchie, Ferrero Roche, Peanutbutter and Banana, Black Forest, Milk Tart and White Choc Berry. All of these are flavourful, thick and creamy. Just remember to bring your own straws as Kota Joe has yet to receive the plastic memo. If you want to catch a bite to eat with all your milkshakes, we recommend tucking into the Chicken Strip Kota, a Kota stuffed with chips, crumbed chicken strips and your choice of cheese, mushroom or pepper sauce.

Applebite - Burgers

To the residents of Edenvale and surrounds, Applebite has long been known as the perfect spot to cure a night of partying. They offer deliciously thick milkshakes, delectable pizzas and even a traditional Sunday carvery. But the secret hiding at this roadhouse has got to be their Toasted Bacon Burger. Technically, this isn't on the menu, but somehow they always deliver when we order it. What could be better than toasted bread topped with lettuce, tomato, a burger patty, bacon and house sauce to cure a hangover? Alternatively, try their Bacon and Banana Burger, it may sound weird but it hits all the right notes.

Orama - Slo⋅Jo Smoothies

Hidden away in the centre of Boksburg, Orama makes a fine place to spend a Saturday afternoon or night. Not only do they offer some great roadhouse food and drinks, but they also offer drive-in movie nights. So pack the car, head on over to Boksburg and watch a rom-com while grabbing a bite to eat. Get a rack or ribs with a side of chips and wash it down with their amazing Slo⋅Jos. These fruity slushies are a real treat. The Granadilla is a personal favourite, but we wouldn't say no to the Mixed Berry or White Chocolate.

Contact details: 011 894 1480 / Cnr Trichard & Paul Smith Street, Ravenswood, Boksburg / Facebook

The Burger Box - Schnitzel

You may have expected us to rave about the huge, juicy burgers at Burger Box. While these morsels are certainly worth trying out, especially the Bacon and Avo Burger, the reason to come here is their Schnitzels. They serve up some of the tastiest Pork and Chicken Schnitzels as well as Pork and Chicken Cordon Bleu. These golden and tender fillets are bound to hit the spot. If you're more in the mood for red meat, try the Steak Toasted Sandwich, and don't forget the milkshake - Caramel Crunch, we're thinking!

Grillos Roadhouse - Ribs

This roadhouse, in Benoni, offers a rather large selection of food. These include burgers, pizzas, ribs, grills, footlongs, sandwiches, toasties, tramezzinis, salads, fish, breakfasts, milkshakes and desserts. As great as all this food may be, we go purely for the ribs. You can get a full or half rack with fried onions or go for a combo of ribs with chicken, calamari or wings. End things off on a sweet note with an absolutely mouth watering Banana Split. We love our bananas, especially with ice cream, chocolate, whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Contact details: 011 422 3568 / Cnr Tom Jones St, Elston & Howard Ave, Benoni / https://grillos-roadhouse.business.site

Casbah Roadhouse - Burgers

Most roadhouses make excellent burgers. But Casbah has next level burgers. With 29 burgers on their menu, including beef, chicken, veggie and fish, you will be spoilt for choice. Get one of their giant burgers with two patties, a slice of cheese, fresh tomato, shredded lettuce, crispy bacon and golden onion rings. We promise you'll be left wanting another one, not that there will be space left in your yummy. Finish off your meal with a delightful milkshake, we love the Raspberry or the Caramello Bear for a chocolatey caremel dessert in a glass.

Hard Rock Café

This café, in Sandton, offers American-style fare in the form of chicken wings, nachos, diner-style milkshakes and smoky burgers. But the reason they are on this list is because of the music. Hard Rock Café is inspired by the theme of rock. They have a giant guitar above their door and their bar is lined with 7000 drum sticks that scream ROCK! in that guttural growl we love. The walls flaunt the legends of rock and other musical gizmos in shiny display cabinets. They also have a shop where you can purchase memorabilia of your favourite 80s hero or the hot bassist performing on stage.

Rumours Rock City

Rumours Lounge, renamed Rumours Rock City, says it all in the name. This is unquestionably a city of rock, metal and all the wild and heavy genres this world has to offer. This spot has two bars that divide the space into different sections: the more refined lounge area with cushioned arm chairs and a comfortable carpet and the vivacious and exuberant stage area with head banging and mosh pits. The stage area has a dance floor for the more vigorous among us, as well as a seated area for the more restful. The walls are collaged with posters like a teenage metal head's room, the drinks flow and the live music goes all the way to your bones. They host events on an almost weekly basis and often have live performances from bands like Prime Circle, Springbok Nude Girls and Van Coke Kartel. To see their upcoming events, check out their Facebook page.

Sundowners in Alberton is a bar and restaurant that boasts an inside and outside area, several pool tables, a bar and a swimming pool. The outside area has a large field with ample seating, a field large enough for any lively gig and a dance or moshing floor. The honest musical enjoyment promotes a sense of camaraderie. One feels so welcome there, you could fall asleep in the field — but that is a story for another time. Sundowners hosts bands like Deity's Muse and Man as Machine. In fact, they even have their own house rock band — Alchemy.

Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen is a rock themed restaurant in Melville. They have a short but sweet menu featuring a few burgers, some steak, a handful of pizza options and a lot of whiskey choices, with over 20 different whiskeys on offer. Their decor has a classy feel with taupe oaten walls, simplistic lighting and checker board floors. The leather chairs and library gives the place a classic, old-fashioned gentleman's study vibe. And they have an enjoyable soundtrack of pure rock that evokes the alternative lifestyle.

There is a great rock spot worth mentioning in Pretoria, Aandklas is a pub in Hatfield. This pub has a bar area where you can catch up on life's happenings with your mates and another dance floor area which ignites the feeling of being at a club, but with good old-fashioned rock. If you're taking the drive out to our northern neighbour, pop by for an old school night our with good old-fashioned music.

Parreirinha – La Rochelle

The area might leave you feeling a little unsettled, but this restaurant is definitely worth the visit if you are in La Rochelle! I just had to mention this spot as I found it rather interesting and different compared to other Portuguese restaurants around the city. Parreirinha occupies an old police station, which means you will be dining in what used to be the holding cells! And one section of the restaurant is adorned with hundreds of ties hanging from the rafters, which adds an interesting element to the décor. The food is amazing, service is friendly (but slow) and the atmosphere is just warm and homely! Also, the prawn cakes are said to be absolutely amazing!

A Churrasqueira – Brackenhurst

For the best Portuguese food in South Joburg, be sure to head to A Churrasqueira in Brackenhurst, Alberton! This spot offers quite a variety of dishes from their thrilling menu filled with traditional Portuguese dishes and also all the known favourites. It is the perfect place if you are looking to dine out as a family. There's a brand new kids' menu available and two jungle gyms that will keep the little ones entertained for hours! And, if you love your prawns, A Churrasqueira is known to have the best grilled prawns in Joburg.

Turn ‘n Tender – Bassonia

The first time I visited Turn ‘n Tender, I had no clue what to expect. Sure, I knew that the spot was well-known for its steaks, but that definition just barely scratches the surface! They have almost every type of meat imaginable, every cut of prime beef and an impressive wine list that will complement your meal perfectly. This steakhouse is the ideal spot if you are looking for the ultimate meat haven! Some of the dishes can be rather pricey, so pay them a visit if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion.

Adega – Alberton

Adega has always been a favourite when it comes to my family. My father and sister love to tuck into their regular 1kg of king prawns smothered in garlic and lemon butter sauce. Sadly, with a shellfish allergy (curses!), I always have to find something that will be equally as tasty and indulgent as those ocean critters that I cannot lay my hands on! Luckily, the menu is filled with a number of Portuguese dishes that cater to every taste, whether you want something meaty, from the ocean, or combos because you want the best of both worlds. I’ve been to plenty of Adega branches, but Adega Alberton has definitely given me the best experience!

Casa Portuguesa @ Little Italy – Glenanda

Craving some Italian cuisine? Then be sure to make your way down to the quaint and homely Casa Portuguesa at Little Italy in Glenanda. This spot is perfect if you are looking to sit back and relax or need a kid-friendly spot to keep the little ones fed and entertained. They have a rather extensive menu, but they are known for their delicious pizzas and pasta. And, also be sure to leave some room for their chocolate cake filled with oozing melted chocolate. I have been told that it definitely the perfect dessert if you are a chocoholic looking for something rich and decadent!
