Modeled after the famous love bridge in Paris, this must-visit Harties venue is home to a miniature Eiffel Tower and the famous French Toast Koffie Kafee. Pick out a lock at the cafe and have you and your partner's engraved on it. Then lock it to the bridge and your love is set to last forever. It's a super cheesy but sweet gesture to remember as part of your day trip to Harties.

Tangaroa Strawberry Farm

By now you might be feeling peckish. Pull into Tangaroa Strawberry Farm for a farm style picnic. You can pre-order a picnic basket prepared by the farm's onsite restaurant or bring along your own selection of nibbles. During the summer months you can also go foraging through the farm's strawberry fields. Tangaroa Strawberry Farm is one of Hartbeespoort's most tranquil venues. Set up your picnic along the banks of the dam and enjoy your day out in the fresh air. But be warned, the ducks may try to steal your lunch!

Van Gaalen Cheese Farm

A trip to Hartbeespoort wouldn't be complete without a couple of souvenirs. And what better keepsake than a tasty treat to take home with you? Visit Van Gaalen Cheese Farm to sample a variety of aged cheeses. You can also learn about the cheese making process here. Our favourite is the stinging nettle cheddar cheese, but don't take our word for it. Visit the farm on your way through Harties and experience what 'real' cheese tastes like.

The Elephant and Monkey Sanctuary

The Hartbeespoort Elephant and Monkey Sanctuary is one of the town's most popular destinations to visit over day trips. Their elephant interaction programme takes place seven days a week, three times a day, allowing visitors to touch and interact with the majestic African elephant. Walk trunk and hand through the sanctaury and experience the absolute beauty of these treasure animals. The elephant interaction programme takes approximately 90 minutes, so make sure to plan accordingly.

Harties Aerial Cableway 

Close off an epic day of adventure at the Harties Aerial Cableway. Take the cable car to see the best possible views of the Dam and surrounding Magaliesberg escarpment. The cable car closes at 16:00, so don't miss it! If heights aren't your idea of a good time, go on a brisk hike or fast-paced mountain biking excursion. The cableway also has a fun kids zone to keep the little ones entertained, a number of restaurants and retail outlets. We can't think of a better way to end off your day exploring Harties and all it has to offer.

Delta Park

One of the city's biggest green lungs and a Sunday stroller's paradise, Delta Park in Victory Park offers visitors wide open spaces and plenty of lush to help them reconnect and enjoy nature. There's 104-hectares of grassland and woodland to explore. Be sure to wear comfy clothing and shoes, as you can stroll these grounds for hours! This is also a wonderful spot to take your four-legged companions, as there's plenty of space for them to run around, stretch their legs and even meet a few new fur friends. Many of the park's visitors enjoy the many walking trails, which link three beautiful tree-lined dams. Don't forget to pack a lovely picnic basket, find the perfect spot and enjoy the ambiance.

Golden Harvest Park

Near the Northgate Shopping Centre and Ticketpro Dome in Northriding, is a pristine 55-hectare park, offering visitors rolling walks around a dam and indigenous bushveld to admire and enjoy. This beautiful park is a hidden gem that not many Joburgers are aware of. The Golden Harvest Park is completely fenced off with a guard at the gate to ensure the park's visitors' safety while the explore and experience this stunning little piece of nature. Also, keep in mind that there's an entrance fee that needs to be paid in order to get into this park, but the minimal fee is well worth it.

The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens

One of the most popular parks within Randburg, the 81-hectare Johannesburg Botanical Gardens form one of the city’s vital green lungs. Visitors can expect large, grassy, open spaces scattered with trees, offering the perfect location for runners, picnickers and dog walkers. It hosts the occasional concert season and kite-flying competitions, as well as the ever-popular Linden Market four times a year. Visitors can also spend the afternoon taking a leisurely stroll through the park's special gardens – the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden, a Hedge Demonstration Garden and the main arboretum. The park is fenced and there are gates located at all the entrances which are staffed by security guards.

Within the Ferndale on Republic Mall premises lies a well-known putt-putt course that everyone who resides in Randburg knows of, as it has been in its exact location for MANY years. How many times have you made excuses for not living life to its fullest? Once lockdown is over and it's safe to explore our city again, we're definitely going to be out and about as much as we can. Make your own post-lockdown bucket list filled with all the adventures you've always been "too busy" to go on.

3. Enjoy The Outdoors

This life lesson goes hand in hand with living life to its full potential. We live in an urban jungle, with tree-lined suburban streets, parks and nature reserves just outside the city. You really don't have to venture far to find a good spot to enjoy the urban outdoors. Being cooped up inside for months has definitely taught us to appreciate our natural surrounds and the beauty of our city.

4. Life's About The Simple Things

What have you missed most during lockdown? We bet it's not anything complex or out of reach under normal circumstances. For us, it's been our morning coffee from Seattle Coffee and half-price Tuesdays at Ster-Kinekor Cinemas. The COVID-19 pandemic has most certainly taught us to value the little things we so often take for granted.

5. You Can Cook For Yourself

Yes, you can cook for yourself! We've learnt that those Friday night takeaways aren't always essential and that cooking at home can be a whole lot more fun. Of course, we have missed our favourite juicy burgers from the best burger joints in Joburg and a few other guilty indulgences during lockodwn. But we've also come to appreciate that we can make do with what we have when need be.

6. You Do Have The Time And Ability To Learn New Skills

Have you finally used that meditation app on your smartphone? Lockdown has afforded us much more time to ourselves, leaving many of us dumbfounded over how to pass the time. However, it has also taught us that you really can make time to learn new skills when you put your mind to it. Have you started any new hobbies in lockdown? All it takes is dedication and a yearning to learn something new, doesn't it?

7. It's Good To Slow Down Sometimes

Hasn't it felt good to take a rest from the never-ending rat race? Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, we've been allowed to take a step back from "normal" life. As the days and weeks have become an endless stream of time, we've appreciated the slower pace of things. Once this time is over, we'll be making more time to "do nothing" and let ourselves escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

8. Self-Care Is A Must

On a similar note, we've come to learn that self-care is a must. Amidst the chaos and confusion caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we've had to allow ourselves more time to rest and reboot. Whether this means treating yourself to a day of self-pampering or spending a weekend on the couch in your pajamas, caring for your physical and mental health is vital, pandemic or not.

9. Generosity Costs You Nothing 

On a different note, we have also learnt to care for others during this time. As many of us have struggled to keep afloat financially in lockdown, we've found that generosity can go a long way towards helping someone in need. Even if you have very little to give, a kind word or simple act of kindness can brighten a person's day.

10. We Are All Equal 

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown no discrimination in whom it infects. In retrospect, we've come to learn that now more than ever, we're all the same. From princes to paupers, we have all been impacted by the pandemic in some way. Ultimately, we can choose to see the negative outcomes of this period or to celebrate our common humanity and determination to win against an invisible enemy. We like to hope that it'll be the latter.

Hiking 

Hiking is permitted under level 3 lockdown, so long as you keep a good distance from others and avoid trekking in large groups. You must also wear a face mask at all times and may only hike between the stipulated exercising hours, which are 06:00 - 18:00. Most public parks are not open to the public yet, but there are a couple of top hiking spots that you can visit in level 3 lockdown. Many of these spots are free to enter, as well, so you can save those precious pennies for more outdoor adventures after lockdown has fully ended.

Modderfontein Nature Reserve 

Modderfontein Nature Reserve is open to runners, cyclists and hikers in level 3 lockdown. Come and enjoy the tranquility of the outdoors and get in a good dose of sunshine on one of their many meandering trails. The reserve is open between 06:00 - 18:00 all days of the week, so you can get as much exercise in as possible. Stop along the way to do a little bird watching and take in the beauty that this city park has to offer.

Hennops Hiking Trail

The Hennops Hiking Trail is 45 minutes outside of Johannesburg, but it's well worth the drive. This untainted family farm offers three hiking trails of different lengths and difficulty levels. Put on your hiking boots and come out for a one-of-a-kind adventure. You do not have to pre-book to visit the farm, but you must comply with COVID-19 regulations at all times. The farm closes daily at 17:00. Happy hiking!

Fishing 

Grab your tackle, because it's time to go fishing! While there aren't many fishing spots within the city, the nearby Vaal Triangle offers ample space to cast your rod and reel in a few big catches. Just remember that you cannot leave the Gauteng province to go fishing or hunting, so keep within home ground.

Suikerwater Fishing 

Suikerwater Fishing is a public camp area and top fishing spot located near Suikerbosrand River. Bring your own gear and set up for a day of peace and serenity on the banks of the water. Of course, you will not be able to stay over for the night so be sure to pack up early.

Ezemvelo Nature Reserve

Ezemvelo Nature Reserve is situated near Bronkhorstspruit. Take a trip with the family to this expansive reserve to enjoy a day of mountain biking, hiking, game drives, bird watching and fishing. Bookings are required and there will be a cap of 50 vehicles per day over weekends. You may not have more than five people in one vehicle and you must wear face masks at all times. Game Drives 

Did you know that there are quite a number of game farms and nature reserves situated in and around Johannesburg? So while we may not be able to travel across the country to explore the great outdoors, we can still enjoy the abundance of nature that lives just outside our front doors. Don't forget to bring your camera along to snap all those picture-perfect wildlife moments from the safety of your car.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve 

This Pretoria nature reserve covers over 4000 hectares and has survived as a conservation area since 1929 despite its urban locale. Take a slow drive around the reserve, trying to spot all its vast wildlife. Rietvlei is open to the public between 06:00 - 18:00, so you really can make this an all-day trip. Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge 

If you prefer not to drive long distances to experience nature, book a day trip to Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge. It's only 30 minutes from Sandton, so you can be there and back home in a jiffy. In level 3 lockdown, the lodge is fully back up and running. Their full list of activities include running, mountain biking, swimming, canoe and bicycle rentals, hiking, paddling, fly fishing, self game drives and boat cruises. Swifty gets a job working alongside the Top Dogs at the Arctic Blast Delivery Service (ABDS). There, he becomes friends with P.B. (a thoughtful polar bear), and Lemmy (an absent-minded albatross). Swifty is just a low-ranking lever puller, but he’s determined to work his way up.

To impress his crush, Jade (a worldly red fox), Swifty steals an ABDS sled to deliver an urgent package for her to a mysterious dwelling in the middle of nowhere. After the ABDS’s strict manager, Magda, catches him boasting, she suspends Swifty from work.

Swifty is soon captured by Bertha and Leopold, two nutty conspiracy theorist otters, who recruit him to uncover some sinister plans, which seem to be connected to the Arctic’s rapidly rising temperatures. Swifty investigates and learns that the Top Dogs have abruptly quit. Pitching himself as the town’s only delivery solution, Swifty is soon back at the remote dwelling, the secret cave of Otto Von Walrus!

Otto Von Walrus is a blubbery evil genius with an adorable army of puffin assistants. Swifty stumbles upon Otto’s master plan: to drill beneath Taigasville, unleash enough ancient gas to melt the Arctic and become its ultimate ruler!

Swifty and his ragtag group of friends must band together to fight an epic battle. It’s only when Swifty embraces his natural abilities that he is able to save Taigasville—and the Arctic—from utter destruction.

Camping and caravanning are both popular holiday choices in South Africa. Why, you may ask? Well, if you think about it, there are many great reasons why this should be an option for your next getaway - it's nature at its best; there are endless destination options; and of course the budget friendliness.

As the excitement grows in anticipation of this year's great Gauteng Getaway Show at TicketPro Dome, Getaway has kindly shared some fun - and mostly useful - hints and tips to try on your next outdoor adventure. You never know, they just might come in handy:

• Zips are everywhere – tents, jackets, storage, backpacks – and they often get stuck at inopportune moments. Prepare or fix this by rubbing a lubricant such as a candle or lip-ice on the zipper.
• Too hot? Reduce the temperature in a tent in a sunny spot by covering it with an emergency blanket to reflect the sun rays away.
• In your camping kitchen, use a hanging shoe organiser to store your cutlery, implements, and other small sundry items.
• Want to enjoy eggs for breakfast, but worried they won't survive the journey to your destination? Break your eggs into a sealable container before you go and keep in the cooler for a delicious scrambled egg breakfast, without the broken egg problem.
• Treat the kids to a yummy braai pudding. Pack sugar cones full of mini marshmallows, chopped banana, chocolate chunks and nuts, wrap in foil and place in the coals for five or so minutes. And it's delicious!
• Always pack duct tape. For patching tents, shoes, air mattresses, mozzie nets, bags, and more.
• Pack earplugs. Between them, Mother Nature, neighbours, even camping companions can be louder than anticipated in the dead of night.
• Remember to ‘leave no trace’ – be wise with waste, minimise the amount you take with you, and dispose of it responsibly.

Batteries are a big deal. Brett Kable from Enertec Batteries has three top tips for battery care:

• Always check the battery voltage before a camping trip, and if it is below 12.3, charge it up to 12.7 volts.
• While travelling, make sure the battery is in a well ventilated space and secured in position. Spilled acid can cause severe damage.
• Check your battery voltage regularly when camping. Draining below 12.2 volts will reduce the battery lifespan.
• After camping charge the battery immediately to avoid sulphur build-up.

Johann Carstens from SnoMaster has tips for camping fridges:

• Switch on a day before leaving to avoid unnecessary power usage when camping and travelling.
• Don’t take the baskets out – they help with the air flow around the food and bring the temperature down quicker.
