One of the best things that you can do for a child is to enroll them in a discipline. Kids need extra mural activities to help them learn the basics of human interaction and other social skills.

Through the art of discipline, kids are able to discover themselves, their likes and dislikes at an early age. Here are some benefits to enrolling your children in an extra mural activity:

Let's explore some of the things kids can enroll in.

MiniChess creates a place where children can develop their strategic thinking skills. It can also advance a child's capabilities in Mathematics and discipline.

When playing chess, children will be be challenged. MiniChess is a great place to enroll the kids for something fun and educational.

The Art Of Movement

The Art Of Movement is a dance group that specialises in many different lessons for kids.

Here, the kids will be able to learn various dances, including tap dancing, modern dance, salsa, hip hop and many more.

This is great to keep the kids active and entertained.

Bounce has become one of the most innovative forms of fitness for children.

At Bounce, children can spend hours jumping away on a trampoline. Not only will this keep them active, but they will have loads of fun too.

What extra mural activity is your child enrolled in? Let us know in the comments section below!

Join celebrities and fellow fitness-loving do-gooders getting in the saddle and stationary-cycling for charity at the annual Sasfin Cyclethon later this September. There will be 160 stationary gym bikes available per session, with professional instructors leading cyclists through each round. The sessions will run for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break in between for the changeover of bikes, and everyone is welcome to participate in as many sessions as they want. Not only is it a great way to get your heart pumping, it's also a great way to contribute to a great cause.

Loads of celebrities will be there to join in on the fun or encourage supporters peddling their hearts out, and there will also be live entertainment and fabulous spot prizes. It’s a fun day out for families, the community, corporates and schools while raising funds for HospiceWits and the Smile Foundation.

The Smile Foundation is a South African NGO that assists children with anomalies that require facial reconstructive surgery. Based in 11 academic hospitals in South Africa, the Smile Foundation invests in the teams they work with through a skills development programme, and they assist the hospitals by purchasing equipment for use by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

HospiceWits provides high-quality Palliative care, comfort and support for patients and families affected by life-threatening illnesses. Home-based care is the core work of the 39-year-old Non-Profit Organisation that operates in both Johannesburg and Soweto. They also maintain an in-patient unit in Houghton, where patients can be admitted for pain and symptom control, as well as respite care. Not only does HospiceWits provide care to meet the physical needs of their patients, they also ensure that their emotional, spiritual and psycho-social needs are met. This year, join Sister Judith Young, who has been working as a Home Care Nursing Sister at HospiceWits for 28 years, to raise funds for this amazing cause! For the past five years, she has cycled the Sasfin Cyclethon – for the full six-hour duration! So, cycle with her or give this amazing woman your support by sponsoring her.

In its previous life, the Sandton Sports Club at George Lea Park was, at best, “fine”. It was okay. It did the job. It had a few fields, beach volleyball court, some tired tennis courts, a small serviceable hall that hosted a few classes and events and fairly substantial parking. Nothing to write home about, but it served as a fairly decent green space in the heart of Parkmore.

Not anymore.

Featuring a new volunteer-based committee with a razor-sharp focus and tireless dedication, the Sandton Sports Club has become the go-to venue for families, sports fanatics and innovative businesses looking for a new home. And, you don’t need to be a member to enjoy all it has to offer (unless you want to – see below as to why we think it’s a good idea!)

Eat, Work, Playdate, Family Time

To be fair, the brand new Milk Bar is reason enough to visit! With a stunning bar area and tables spilling out onto a large deck, Milk Bar is already THE go-to spot on Thursday nights (if you enjoy live music) and Friday nights (for sundowners and a delicious meal). While I was there, I noticed many people using the outdoor tables as a workspace – and who can blame them, with beautiful views and outstanding coffee, why not?

Sandton Sports Club

There is also a fully fenced-off shaded grassy area where the kids can play – with brand new jungle gyms and dedicated childminders. There is also plenty of secure outdoor space where kids can skateboard, rollerblade and ride their bikes, as the entire club has been ring-fenced with new perimeter fencing and dedicated security guards have been added. Can anyone say “new playdate venue to try”?

The Milk Bar has also fully renovated the old Hall into an upmarket modern events venue called BOTANIST, that is now available for corporate events, birthday celebrations, wedding receptions and more.

Get Active

On the sports' front, the club’s key offering is the brand new 5-a-side soccer fields and clubhouse, brought to you by the same operators as the Discovery Soccer Park at Wanderers. Social, Corporate, Ladies and Mixed leagues will be hosted in the evenings and on the weekends. The club is also home to a junior football club and an extension of the Warriors FC, currently at the Wanderers Club. Catering for ages from 3 upwards, the club prides itself on its highly qualified elite trainers with international experience.

Children's Parties

If you’re looking for an exciting new party venue, then the Soccer Club and Clubhouse might be exactly what you’re looking for! With dedicated soccer co-ordinators, complete use of a section of the Soccer Clubhouse and deck, and with optional catering available from Milk Bar – this venue is ideal for those wanting an active outdoor party away from home. Plus, the venue is licensed.

Members Welcome

No membership fee is required to enjoy the Sandton Sports Club and all it has to offer, however paying members will receive a 10% discount on their total Milk Bar bill, reduced rates on various club offerings, and voting rights as to the direction the club takes in the future. Membership fees are as little as R100 per person per month or R120 per month for a family of four. And yes, I signed up (via their website).

I was recently invited to attend a race with a new friend who did her best to try and sell it to me by saying, “Ag man, it’ll be fun, it’s a 5km obstacle course. You don’t have to run and if you can’t get over an obstacle, we just move on. It’s basically just to have fun, get muddy and laugh at other people battling the same obstacles we did.” She wasn't convincing enough…

What Is A Warrior Race?

Warrior Races started as the Warrior Dash in America (where else?) and was launched in 2009 by Red Frog Events as a “fun obstacle course race that anyone can start and everyone can finish”. Within the Warrior Dash brand, they now boast over three million participants worldwide and brag that they've reinvented the concept of a 5km run and created a revolution: the Warrior Nation.

Their website explains: “Whether you’re an elite athlete or just beginning the challenge, you’ll conquer 12 world-class obstacles, wade across wooded lakes, and venture through mud-caked back roads as you make your loop to the finish line. You’ll be rewarded with a finisher medal, a sweet t-shirt, fuzzy Warrior helmet, and ice-cold beer. Head to the post-race party to relive the course with friends, dance to music, and celebrate your decision to leave your normal weekend in the mud.” So no money or fame, just a beer, dirty clothes, a party and the feeling of primal joy you get when you reconnect with your inner-warrior.

The Warrior Dash pioneered all the Warrior Races we have in South Africa today and it has become a favourite way to spend a weekend for families, athletes and people who like to have a laugh.

If it weren’t for the mud, I would have probably said yes to my friend’s invitation, in fact, I still might. But in the meantime, I take my hat off to all the fine men and women who sacrifice their dignity and weekends, for a spot of fun and a whole lot of warrior.
