Melville is one of Johannesburg’s oldest suburbs, dating back to the mid 1890s, and was named for land surveyor, Edward Harker Vincent Melvill. Today, this area is known for its exciting bars, trendy restaurants and thriving student social scene due to its close proximity to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). Melville is also well known for the picturesque Melville Koppies, an exciting archaeological and geological site with rolling hills overlooking the city of Johannesburg.
