What Is 44 Stanley?

As far as mixed-use precincts go, 44 Stanley is one of the most well-developed in Joburg. The restaurants, boutiques and artist workshops here are renowned for their top quality products and superior service. If you've ever attended a market or event at 44 Stanley, you'll know that it hums with activity over weekends. This is where all the verified 'cool kids' hang out, so be sure to visit as soon as lockdown is over.

COVID-19 Precautions

During lockdown, 44 Stanley has been allowed to open select stores and restaurants for trade. You can visit the precinct, guaranteed you are fully kitted out in lockdown gear (face mask on and hands sanitised to perfection). However, most stores and restaurants are offering online ordering and delivery to promote physical distancing and contactless trade. While this may be sad for some of us who thrive on human interaction (looking at you extroverts), it is necessary to curb the spread of COVID-19 infections in our city.

Restaurants Open During Level 4 Lockdown

The restaurants at 44 Stanley are well-known for their unique offerings and super tasty menus. Now, we know that after months of cooking for yourself, you must be dying for a little restaurant food. Help support the eateries and food stores at 44 Stanley by ordering in.

Vovo Telo

How many bad loaves of bread have you baked in lockdown? No more kneading, rolling or flouring necessary because Vovo Telo is open for bakery collections. Get your (clean) hands on freshly baked sourdough, rye and seed breads, or indulge in a decadent slice of Oreo Peanut Butter Cheesecake. Vovo Telo is open between 10:00 - 14:00, so don't miss out!

Salvation Cafe

Your favourite brunch spot in the city is open for delivery through UberEats! While their menu has been cut down to make the order and delivery process easier, you can still get your fix of healthy breakfasts, sweet treats and grocery staples from Salvation Cafe. If you would prefer to collect your order from the restaurant, simply stand under the olive tree and wait for one of their staff to bring out your order.

How about a box of handcrafted choccies to devour while binge-watching your favourite series in lockdown? Chocoloza is open for delivery of their crafty chocolate creations. Email them on [email protected] to make your order. You can also visit the store between 10:00 - 14:00.

The Leopard

The Leopard Bistro has been hard at work throughout lockdown, bringing grocery orders and ready meals direct to their customers. Treat yourself to a taste of their wholesome, sustainably sourced food goodies by ordering for next day delivery.

Bean There Coffee

Hats off to you if you've managed to survive lockdown without a daily caffeine fix. However, if you're human like us, order yourself a bag of fresh coffee granules or beans from Bean There Coffee. Sadly, their restaurant at 44 Stanley isn't yet open for deliveries or takeaway coffees, but you can make your own at home just as easily.

Check out the full list of 44 Stanley stores open for trade during level 4 lockdown here.

Joburg is a wonder world of culinary experiences. If you are anything at all like us, you have been missing out on restaurant hopping across town. As soon as we are able to get out and explore again, these will be our top two Joburg dining picks:

Modena Italian Eatery

If there was ever any doubt that 4th Avenue in Parkhurst is one of Joburg's culinary centres, Modena Italian Eatery has proven critics wrong. This Italian-inspired eatery opened in February 2020, just before chaos erupted. Their menu features a delightful selection of traditional Italian dishes, as well as a few with a modern twist. We will most certainly be stopping by once life returns to relative normality to sample their Napolitana di Modena – a traditional tomato ragu served with bocconcini mozzarella over homemade pasta with a nice tall glass of wine.

L'atelier Bakery

Just before the national lockdown began, we were fortunate enough to attend the grand opening of L'atelier Bakery at the Trumpet Building on Keyes Avenue. This French-Belgian inspired patisserie wowed us with their array of pastries and savoury delights. We will surely be back once the lockdown has ended to sample some more of their tasty treats.

Latelier Bakery

L'atelier Bakery

Speaking of wine, have you run out of your favourite tipple? With liquor sales banned for the last two months, we have become a city of teetotalers. But, for those of you who will be headed straight to the nearest drinking hole once we have bid COVID-19 farewell, here are two of Jozi's best cocktail spots to welcome you back to the scene:

Saigon Suzy

Seeing the back side of COVID-19 is going to call for a massive celebration. So, why not go all out with a night of delicious dim sum, cocktails and karaoke? With two venues in Joburg, Saigon Suzy is likely to see her loyal patrons return in their hordes (at a distance, of course) for an epic night out on the town. Don't miss out on all the fun!

Social Parkwood

The creator of Saigon Suzy is also the brainchild behind Social Parkwood. If it's fancy cocktails you want, it's fancy cocktails you'll get here. They also cater to other drink preferences, so no matter your poison, you should be pleased. Social's restaurant element isn't to be snubbed either, as they elegantly combine the bar and restaurant to give their patrons a great overall experience. What more could you need to get back into the Joburg party vibe?

Social Parkwood

Social Parkwood

How about an evening of uninhibited dancing? While there have been a number of awesome live streaming events to keep you jiving throughout lockdown, there is nothing quite like a night out on the town in your dancing shoes. Here's where you can strap them on and get moving again!

If you've ever visited the Maboneng Precinct, you'll know that Canteen is the place to be. Not only is their menu generous in variety and flavour, but their rooftop salsa events are unrivaled. Whether you are a seasoned professional or complete amateur, this vibrant rooftop party is sure to get your toes tapping. Combined with the fantastic view of the inner city below, Canteen's Sunday salsa event is a definite must-attend once lockdown is over and we can safely leave our homes.

Carfax & And

From the rooftops to the underground, the Joburg party scene is as diverse as the people who bring it to life. If you're after something grungier than usual, visit Carfax & And, Newtown's most exciting secret dance club venues. And specialises in techno and drum and bass parties, so expect a raving party. Carfax boasts a similar vibe, but hosts more exclusive events including art exhibitions and private artist parties, so you'll have to keep your ear to the ground to get yourself a ticket in the door. Nevertheless, these venues are unlike any other in the city and are well worth a visit on your first night out on the town after lockdown.

Stay Over

Being cooped up at home for months can cause serious cabin fever. If you can no longer stand the sight of your own couch, bed or kitchen cupboards, take a few days to recuperate at one of these two awesome Jozi hotels. One is a budget-friendly bakcpacker's haven, the other a world-class, architectural marvel. Whichever you choose, we are sure you will have a ball being away from home for awhile.

Once In Joburg

Once In Joburg is unofficially known as Joburg's only 'poshtel' - a perfect mish-mash of classy hotel and hostel situated right in the heart of Braamfontein. During the national lockdown period, Once In Joburg will be functioning as a safe harbour for health care workers as part of the Ubuntu Beds campaign. However, once things return to normal, we are sure that they will be ready to welcome in adventurous travellers. If you have always wanted to explore your city by night, this is the place to stay over. So, go on and tick those adventures off your bucket list. If lockdown has taught us anything, it's that life is meant to be lived to the fullest.

The Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch

The Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch and Marriott Executive Apartments Johannesburg Melrose Arch opened on Sunday, 1 March 2020. Boasting an impressive 306 rooms and modern facilities, this hotel is where consummate professionals and tourists alike can relax, rejuvenate and negotiate all at once. As global travel may be off the cards for a few months to come, book yourself into this luxury hotel for a weekend getaway, right in the heart of the city.

Joburg is undoubtedly an urban jungle. Get out into the fresh air once lockdown is over by visiting Joburg's top parks and nature reserves. Our top picks include a protected nature reserve hidden right in the heart of Houghton and the best art and sculpture park in Gauteng. So, get on those hiking books and go on an adventure!

The Wilds

The Wilds has undergone massive reconstruction and revitalisation in recent years. Home to some of Joburg's most unique indigenous plant species, this is the perfect destination to reintroduce yourself to the wild outdoors. Set against the Melville koppies, the park offers adventurers an array of winding paths and hills to explore. This is also a great spot to take a few wildlife snaps and post-lockdown selfies set against the Joburg skyline.

NIROX Sculpture Park

Art imitates life, doesn't it? The NIROX Sculpture Park reflects the dichotomy between man-made art and the natural world with perfect balance. Stroll their expansive sculpture gardens, artist studios and the park's natural wonders on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The on-site restaurant is famed for its generous Sunday afternoon lunches, so bring the whole family along for a post-lockdown celebration feast.

A Little Bit Of Culture

Have you been enjoying tons of online theatre, music and visual art content while in lockdown? Unfortunately, there is nothing quite like the real thing. Treat yourself to a night out at the theatre or the cinema and help get the arts community back on its feet after lockdown.

The Market Theatre

The Market Theatre has stood as an icon of South African theatre since 1976. If you've never visited this historic theatre venue before, hop on over the M1 to Newtown as soon as lockdown ends. With its air of urban jazz culture and casual 'coolness', the Market Theatre bar is the ideal place to hang out before the show begins. Here you'll most likely bump into a few famous faces and possibly some new friends. So, put on your peddler's hat and earn yourself a good dose of theatre culture.

The Bioscope Independent Cinema

Our final top Jozi destination to visit post-lockdown is The Bioscope Independent Cinema. Shortly before lockdown was implemented, The Bioscope made their big move out of the Maboneng Precinct. Their new home at 44 Stanley should be completed once we are all set free, so you can get back to enjoying independent cinema right away. Grab the popcorn and slushies because we are totally ready to go on a big screen adventure!

Ready to get planning your post-lockdown adventures across the city? Check out these awesome experience packages you can buy now and enjoy later!

Indie Cinema In The Heart Of The City

For a decade, The Bioscope Independent Cinema has advertised itself as Joburg's only truly independent cinema. Situated within the heart of the Maboneng Precinct, The Bioscope has offered Jozi film fundis the very best in local and international independent cinema. Not to mention their quirky repurposed car seats and legendary combo boxes, all of which have made a trip to The Bioscope a must on city explorers' bucket lists. The Bioscope has also been the host of many a film festival, promoting student work and independent artists throughout their 10 years in Maboneng.

Now, in celebration of their 10th anniversary, The Bioscope looks to a new future. They recently announced that the cinema will be moving out of Maboneng to a new home - 44 Stanley in Milpark!

Why The Move?

If you have ever visited The Bioscope in Maboneng, you will know that their space is superbly limited. The move to 44 Stanley marks an evolution of the cinema, which will soon be offering bigger and better events, such as private screenings, parties and conferences. The Bioscope will also be able to offer an extended gift shop, where you buy all assortments of trinkets and mementos at their new venue. Their sister company, Little Edish will be setting up shop right next door, too.

Nevertheless, Maboneng remains a special place in the hearts of The Bioscope's founders and fans. That's why their flagship pizza cafe, Chalkboard, will remain at the original venue. So, whenever you find yourself in Mabs with a hankering for good pizza or craft beer, pop by Chalkboard to reminiscence about the good old days of The Bioscope and enjoy a hearty meal.

Lend A Hand

As a result of the national lockdown to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus, The Bioscope was unable to host their final screenings at their Maboneng home. The cinema has always relied on their faithful and passionate patrons to see them through tough times, which is why they have introduced the Benefit Ticket system. While you may not be able to purchase tickets to upcoming shows, The Bioscope ask that you buy a Benefit Ticket to help get them through renovations at 44 Stanley in anticipation of your impending arrival. They will also be pioneering their own cinema club, The Cine Society - a platform for organising film meet ups and a way to meet people in your city that enjoy watching films as much as you do! All Benefit Ticket options will include membership to the Cine Society.

Here are the four Benefit Ticket options:

  1. Popcorn Benefit (R500 per person) – Complimentary and bottomless popcorn every time you visit The Bioscope in 2020, your name on the Friends Of The Bioscope plaque, and automatic sign-up to The Cine Society.

When the craving hits, the craving hits! And because of that we took up the challenge to knock out a list of the best pancakes in Joburg. Yup, we ate it all so that you will know where to park your car the next time the craving klaps.

Salvation Cafe

For quite some time Salvation Cafe has been the go-to brunch spot for locals in and around Milpark. As one of 44 Stanley's most popular tenants, Salvation Cafe offers an authentic cafe experience one would find along the French Riviera during springtime. And what better way to soak up the sun at the edge of Africa than with a hearty dose of pancakes? Choose between classic pancakes glittered with cinnamon sugar, fresh lemon juice and syrup, or island it up with a Caribbean-inspired flatty topped with fresh fruit, a berry coulis, syrup and yogurt.

Pancakes In Joburg

Arbour Cafe

A pancake by any other name is still a pancake... but if you want to be linguistically correct without stepping on any French toes, head to Arbour Cafe in Birdhaven to get your crepe on. Options range from the simple sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and syrup entry to the more complex brandy flambéed orange butter sauce crepe. Our favourite would be the Nutella and banana rendition for sure. Wash this down with one of the many teas Arbour Cafe has on offer.

Pancakes In Joburg

The Perfect Cup

You know you're in for a treat when you sit down in a coffee shop that reminds you of your cultured aunt's kitchen. The perfect Cup in Parkview has become a home away from home for many Joburg residents... and with the homeliness comes pancakes, of course. With four sweet and three savoury options to choose from, there's something for every mood imaginable (as if we need an excuse to stuff our faces with the fluffiest and most delicate pancakes in Joburg). The menu sings songs of apples and cream, peppermint chocolate and ice cream, and mince, chicken and tuna fillings.

Pancakes In Joburg

De Molen

With by far the biggest variety of pancakes on this list of top pancakes in Joburg, De Molen is a Dutch bakery and restaurant hidden inside a windmill in Edenvale. Far from the beautiful and heritage-rich streets of Holland, De Molen offers items such as savoury bacon and cheese, chicken mayo stuffed pancakes or cherries and cream, and Dutch apple and cinnamon pancakes, to name a few. The coffee is also good, the vibe great, and the rest of the menu just as delicious. De Molen truly serves the best pancakes in Joburg even though these are a tad thicker than we're used to.

Pick-a-Pancake is a family restaurant with an endearing cow theme, and they specialises in meal-size pancakes with savoury or sweet fillings. The menu is not limited to pancakes, however, as they also serve a variety of meals such as breakfasts, tramezzini, salads, chips, etc... but we're here to talk about pancakes! Patrons can expect an interesting combination of diner-style fillings such as an English breakfast pancake complete with egg, roasted tomato, caramelised onion and bacon.

Details: 076 153 0617, Old Rustenburg Road, Hartbeespoort, Brits, 0216

Honorable Mention: Checkers

For years - if not decades - we've been nibbling our way through Saturday morning grocery shopping on the most amazing, plain Jane pancakes under the African sun. On most days, especially over weekends, Checkers stores across Gauteng roll out the old gas stove and a big jar of pancake batter and get cracking. The price per pancake is quite low and toppings are strictly limited to the old-school cinnamon sugar and lemon juice – which is sometimes exactly what you're craving.

One of our favourite hangouts close to town is 44 Stanley in Milpark. Not only is it a great place to shop for hipster arts and crafts and other handmade goods, but it's also a great place to wine and dine and soak up the summer sun.  But without further ado, let's get to the point and explore the restaurants of 44 Stanley this compact precinct has to offer, shall we?

Calexico really is one of the few places where you would want to drink great quality beers, wines, tequila and mescal. The ambiance is laid-back, making it the best place for drinks after work or a boozy get-together with friends over the weekend. Entertainment includes live music on Saturdays and regular vinyl-set evenings, so look out for updated events. Super Sconto

This Italian deli and supermarket in Orange Grove has a diverse range of cold cut meat, cheeses and vegetables. At the counter you can create your own sandwich. Just choose your meat; like mortadella, turkey or parma, your cheese like mozzarella or gorgonzola and your veg like artichokes, sundried tomatoes and olives to go on a crusty ciabatta. A mozzarella with yummy pesto, chewy sundried tomatoes and salty olives is certainly what I would go for.

Vovo Telo

Vovo Telo has a great selection of sarmies for you to choose from whether you are in a rush or want to sit back and relax. Their bread is freshly baked daily, from ciabattas and sourdough to bagels and rye. They also have a croissant sandwich with gypsy ham, boerenkaas, lettuce and tomato.

Jo’Anna Melt Bar

This bar is known for their amazing cocktail menu and toasties. After a long day at work, pop into one of their comfy booths. Velo Café

Known for the best sarmies in Braamies, Velo Café offers a great spot to relax, have a good cup of coffee and a yummy sarmie. This spot at 44 Stanley is perfect for those looking for a great gourmet sarmie. They have unique and delicious selection of gourmet sarmies to choose from, and they're all named after movie and TV characters. Proof Café

If you are looking for a sandwich made from quality ingredients and freshly baked bread that comes in generous portions then you need to pay a visit to Proof Café in Sandton. Their menu consists mostly of sandwiches. These come in all types from traditional South African toasties to a Middle Eastern Wrap (it counts as a sandwich). We recommend the BLAT - because the only thing a regular BLT needs is some avo.

Melt Chocolate

Melt Chocolate is a fantasy among chocolate lovers because of their decadent chocolate shots, hot chocolates and cakes. But this spot also makes great sandwiches. They have a few classic options like roast beef and tuna mayo. Those of us who struggle to decide what to eat can choose the platter option, which gives you a quarter of any four sandwiches. You can also build your own toasted sandwiches using one of their five bread options loaded with your choice of toppings. We, however, go there for their signature sandwiches. The Ham and Berry Apple Tower is definitely worth trying, we are talking about a tower made out of ciabatta, pulled pork, lettuce, emmental, micro greens, baked apple and cranberry mustard sauce.

Bread Basket

You'll never have to make your own lunch again thanks to Bread Basket. With a big selection of sarmies to choose from, you will feel spoiled for choice. The Smoked Salmon Trout and Cream Cheese on a buttery croissant sounds good right about now.

Casa Marani Italian Deli in Parkhurst offers only two options; the Ciabatta Panino Vegetarian and Ciabatta Panino Meat. However, you can add any of their 50 choices of cured meats, cheeses and marinated vegetables for a magnificent DIY sandwich of epic proportions. Think about olive ciabatta smothered with hummus and topped with crumbled goats feta, provolone, red onion, marinated peppers, mushrooms and paper thin slices of prosciutto and turkey - Yum!
