The music project at St. Matthew’s School in Soweto came to Design Quarter’s attention as the school was planning to shut the project down, due to lack of funds. St. Matthew’s is a Catholic School in Soweto, that caters to Grade 1 – Grade 12 learners. They have a proven track record of producing good Matric results, with exceptional performance on STEM subjects.
As the main driver for this and previous fundraisers, Nkuli Bogopa offered to assist the school to raise funds in order to ensure the sustainability of the music project, which is an orchestra made up of children from Grade 2 – Grade 12. This is the only opportunity available to the children from this underprivileged township with excessive levels of unemployment to participate in any form of extra-mural activities. The project relies on sponsorships in order to continue to provide the various music instruments required to the children, as well as to pay the tutors that teach the children how to read and play music.
Music is crucial in childhood development and more so, learning to play music instruments. This project ensures that the children are occupied and engaged in a constructive way, which helps to prevent them from falling prey to drugs, alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, etc.
This music project is close to her heart because music is not just about auditory sense, but it also has the following positive benefits:
- Improves language
- Improves listening skills
- Improves focus and memory
- Improves mathematics skills
- Improves discipline and teamwork
- Improves self-confidence and self-esteem
- Assists with creativity
- Relieves stress
The music project performed at the Houghton Golf course in 2018, where they raised approximately R100 000 worth of sponsorship to assist with the sustainability of the project.
The music project, together with members of the JPO, performed at Design Quarter in Fourways on Saturday, 12 December 2020 to great enjoyment of restaurant patrons and shoppers that came to view the Market on Main Festive Pop-up and array of stores available within the centre.
