Sandton City & Nelson Mandela Square Lights Up With Cheerful Festivities This Christmas!

The holiday season is all about family time, festive cheer and, of course, plenty of fun. And to start off all the festive celebrations, Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square will be lighting up Sandton with loads of festivities including carols, LEGO®, Nickelodeon’s Shimmer and Shine, a life-sized snow globe and, last but not least, a special visit from Santa Claus himself!

Christmas is here, and to get you into the season of all things merry, jolly and just downright cheerful, Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are once again bringing visitors a spectacular lineup of festive entertainment you just cannot miss. Here's what's in store this December:

  • Carols on the Square  Under the African Sky: Sunday, 03 December 2017, 17:00.
  • The most spectacular LEGO® event in South Africa, 08 to 24 December 2017.
  • Nickelodeons Shimmer and Shine, four shows and three meet-and-greets daily, 08 to 24 December 2017.
  • Photos with Santa or inside a life-sized Snow Globe, rides on the Hamleys train, and more

Carols on the Square – Sunday, 03 December 2017

The holiday season at Sandton City starts with Nelson Mandela Square’s iconic Carols on the Square – Under the African Sky. For one night only, legendary conductor Richard Cock will once again take centre stage with the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra in an unforgettable free concert that combines traditional festive classics with an African flair.

You can look forward to exciting performances of Christmas carols and contemporary songs from vocal soloists Monde Msutwana, Nicholas Nicolaidis, Friedal Mitas and violinist Andrew Gilbert. Everyone is invited to join this festive singalong of your favourite carols, starting from 17:00. Arrive early to grab a seat or book a table at one of the wonderful restaurants.

What's Next?

From Friday, 08 December 2017, the festive family fun hits full-swing throughout Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square. There’s plenty to enjoy, watch and create from 09:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, until 18:00 on Sundays and Public Holidays, and until midday (12:00) on 24 December 2017.

A Spectacular LEGO® Event

The most spectacular LEGO® event in the country will transform the Sandton City Centre Court into a magical LEGO wonderland. The country's biggest LEGO attraction includes Duplo, City, Star Wars, Friends, Ninjago and Christmas. Visitors can play in the giant LEGO pit or join the free building, show building and speed building activities. You can also interact with robotic displays and take a picture at the LEGO photo wall. Entry is FREE and everything is awesome!

Nickelodeon's Shimmer and Shine

Add a little more sparkle to the festive season with twins, Shimmer and Shine, who will be visiting Nelson Mandela Square for spectacular live shows and to meet and greet their fans. Shimmer and Shine is one of the most popular series on Nickelodeon Junior, and meeting the twins will certainly make many little ones’ wishes come true this holiday. Show times are 10:0014:00, 16:00 and 18:00 and meet-and-greets are at 11:00, 13:00 and 17:00, and all events are free.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

Santa Claus will once again take his position in the Centre Court, posing for photographs with customers in his sleigh. You can also have your photograph taken inside their real Snow Globe near the Sandton City Food Court from now until 27 December 2017.

All Aboard The Hamley's Train!

For a little bit of choo-choo fun, the Hamleys Train is offering kids rides around Sandton City’s lower level from its pop-up store. The City’s also got your gift-wrapping covered from 01 to 24 December 2017, with proceeds going to the Sandton SPCA.

Also, Extended Shopping Hours

Giving you more time to enjoy all this, do your festive shopping and much more, Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are extending their trading hours. Visitors can shop from 09:00 to 21:00 every day from 01 to 23 December 2017 (yes, including public holidays) and until 18:00 on Christmas Eve.

  1. Hi, the experience my kids had with this shimmer and shine show on 22/12/2017 was the total pits. Planning was done very poorly you arrive hours before the show then they advise come back and hour before for armbands. Everytime you arrive an hour before the show then you are told the show is already full I had to spend 6 hours and was verbaly abused by the supposedly person in charge of that stage. Why bother with armbands when it did not work on a 1st come 1st serve basis? I cant even call her a lady because the way she treated us parents and kids is beyond my understanding, for future ref please make tickets available for sale so we can pay and have security that we will have seats available for our kids. It seems because the show was free your person in charge there felt it was ok for her to be abusive and racist.
