Must Visit Bars This March

We all know that there is an abundance of bars in Joburg. There’s no way we could possibly cover them all but we’ve rounded up our top picks for the month of March … try them out and let us know what you think!

Hells Kitchen

This is a Melville favourite … and for good reason. The rockabilly bar is an awesome place to hang out for after work drinks, a juicy bite to eat, a lazy Sunday lunch or a raucous Saturday night out. Hint: try the Hellfire whiskey if you want something delicious to quench your thirst.

Where: Shop 4, 7th Street, Melville, Johannesburg.

Jo’anna Melt Bar

Another Melville hotspot, Jo’anna is best known for its melted cheese creations (perfect after a spot of drinking) and their jukebox … which means that you never know what kind of night you’ll have, musically speaking. Head on over, a night at Jo’anna’s is always fun!

Where: 7, 7th Street, Melville, Johannesburg.

The Artisan

Get to this Greenside spot for simple food (go for the nachos, trust), great drinks and super-stunning décor. Cocktails shine here and you can expect to sip on anything from a classic strawberry daiquiri to a more exotic lemon meringue cheesecake drink. They also serve beer on tap if you’d rather keep things simple.

Where: 12 Gleneagles Road, Greenside, Johannesburg.

Social Kitchen and Bar

This place is in an unexpected spot – but that’s part of what makes it so great … find the Social Kitchen and Bar inside Exclusive Books in Hyde Park Corner. You’ll find great wine options, craft cocktails, craft beers, champers and so much more. Treat your tastebuds to a sharing plate while you sip on your drink of choice.

Where: Hyde Park Corner, Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nicol Drive, Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Dakota Lee

Another bar in an unexpected venue, Dakota Lee is a rockabilly-themed bar that’s located inside a tattoo parlour. They often have live music here so be sure to keep an eye out to stay in the loop. Why not try a signature shot while you’re there? Like the Black Sabbath – Jägermeister mixed with Absinthe … sounds dangerous!

This vibey spot tends to get pretty pumping on a Friday night, so if it’s a bar with a bit of a wild atmosphere you’re after, this is the place to check out. There are plenty of bar nibbles to choose from should you feel a bit peckish while you’re indulging in drinks. Keep an eye out for their jars – sangria, Pimms and the like … they’re as refreshing as they are huge!

Where: Boskruin Village Shopping Centre, Corner of Fouche and Hawken Avenues, Boskruin, Johannesburg.

Ace + Pearl

Find Ace + Pearl in Craighall is a fine wine bar. If you’re not into plonk, this is definitely the place to check out. The curated collection of vino will have any wine lover’s heart singing so be sure to check this intimate space out.

Where: Shop 8, Albans Square, 357 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall Park, Johannesburg.

Sir James van der Merwe

This bar is only open to the public on Wednesdays but what it lacks in days, it makes up for in ambiance. It’s a super-cool place to visit, with a stunning cityscape view, a DJ on decks and a fully-loaded bar, complete with some delicious eats.

Where: 6 Desmond Street, Kramerville, Johannesburg.
