Mr Hare Meet Mr Mandela and Charlotte’s Web, The National Children’s Theatre

The National Children’s Theatre in Parktown should be your first go-to for top quality kiddies’ theatre. From June to July 2019 they will be staging two awesome children’s theatre pieces.

Mr Hare Meets Mr Mandela will delight young audiences. This theatrical adaptation of Chris Van Wyk’s beloved novel, about a Hare who travels to Johannesburg to return a R200 note to Mr Mandela, makes its world premiere at the NCT from Sunday, 9 June to Sunday, 21 July 2019.

Charlotte’s Web returns to the NCT for the school holiday season. The play is based on a classic children’s novel by E.B White. A story of enduring friendship against all odds, Charlotte’s Web is a must-see.

Sarafina!, Joburg Theatre

This one is for older kids and teens with a keen interest in the history of our country. In honour of National Women’s Month, the Joburg Theatre will be re-staging the iconic Sarafina! originally devised by Dr Mbongeni Ngema. This historical musical is set at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, where in 1976, about 200,000 black students assembled to protest. Sarafina! is most definitely on the list of must-see theatre shows for young South Africans, so don’t let the kids miss out on seeing it live. The show will be staged on the main Mandela Theatre stage from Friday, 19 July 2019 to Sunday, 11 August 2019.

Tiny The Tokoloshe and Other African Tales, Pieter Toerien Theatre

Some of my favourite stories as a child were African folklore and myth. There is just something so magical about learning how the Zebra got its stripes, how the Lion got its roar and how the Crocodile ate the sun. Take the kids to the Pieter Toerien Studio Theatre at Montecasino to see Tiny the Tokoloshe and Other African Tales. The show will be on from Thursday, 5 September to Sunday, 29 September 2019.

Peppa Pig’s Big Day Out, Theatre of Marcellus Emperor’s Palace

Peppa Pig is undoubtedly the most popular piggie to ever grace television screens (sorry, Babe). Kids adore Peppa’s English accent and delightful manners. It’s Peppa’s Big Day Out –  Polly Parrot and Mr Dinosaur have vanished and it’s up to Peppa, George, Mummy and Daddy Pig to find them. This theatre show is perfect for younger children and would make for a great first live theatre experience. Plus, it’s more fun than a muddy puddle, so get your tickets ASAP! The shows runs from Friday, 20 September to Sunday, 29 September 2019.
