Mommy Influencer: Catching Up With Angie Batis

You’ve probably seen her blog, Lucky Pony, while going about your daily internet browsing. Angie Batis is a phenomenal mom and businesswoman turning everything she touches into gold. She owns Mr Big Stuff in Braam, co-owns Good Luck Club and still manages to be a great mom, so we decided it was time to get to know how she does it all!

What inspired

I collect all sorts of things and I love taking photos and baking, etc. I wanted a place where I could showcase all the stuff that I make and have in my life. My husband, Shane, actually set it up for me as a surprise going on 9 years ago and I haven’t looked back since, except for when I browse through a few of my old posts, some of which are pretty ridiculous.

As a working mom, how do you balance time between work and bonding with your children?

I’m pretty lucky in that I work for myself, so I essentially dictate my own hours and I make sure that a large portion of them are dedicated to my kids. I’m also one of those people who don’t like going to bed too early, so often I’ll sit on the couch after they are down and answer emails etc.

What are some of the challenges you have faced on the motherhood journey?

Making sure that every now and then I make enough time for myself. My kids and my life in general take up a lot of time, time that sometimes feels like it’s on a speed train into the future. I’m going to be honest and say that sometimes I feel a bit guilty taking time out for myself, but I do think that it’s completely necessary and a must in any mom’s life.

Tell us about your favourite moments with your children.

Every single day is full of favourite moments with my daughter and my new baby boy.

What have you learnt about yourself through raising your children?

I have learnt that being a mom is something I’m good at (well, I think I am) and that it doesn’t take much to make me extremely happy. In fact, all it takes is hearing my child tell me that she loves me.

What are your favourite baby/child brands Joburg moms must try?

For awesome wooden toys and handmade stuffed animals, head to La Fede. Amazing furniture and decor bits for kids: Olly Polly. Beautiful baby accessories: Mina Moo and Baby. Amazingly super-cute children’s clothing: Kimmy and Bear. For cool design bits and pieces for kids parties: Harry and Her. Customised baby dummies, which are just too sweet: Choo Cha.

What are your favourite Joburg spots to visit with your children?

James and Ethel Grey Park. Fabb Cafe and Gelato in Parkhurst – the best gelato ever!

What’s in your baby bag?

Oh-Lief aqueous cream and Pure Beginnings baby wipes, among other things. But every one of my bags and every room in our house has baby wipes.

What are your favourite mommy time-out rituals?

Going out to dinner with my husband and talking about moving the whole family to a beautiful private island where we’ll eat amazing food and walk on the beach every day for the rest of our lives. Heaven!

Do you have any advice for Joburg’s working moms?

Yes, every now and then go out to dinner with your other half and talk about living on a private island surrounded by magical food and scenery – it does wonders for the soul.
