The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is in direct competition with Apple’s Macbook Air M1. The Windows-based device is holding its own by offering connections that users rely on. Let’s dive into those now.

Native Applications

Though the most popular Windows applications are available on the App Store, there isn’t a full-proof way to verify that your go-to apps will work on an M1 MacBook. With over 200+ popular applications not supported on M1, there is a good chance you may be missing some apps you currently use on another PC. This is where the Surface Laptop 3 shines through thanks to its full integration into the Windows ecosystem.

Connecting Peripherals

It’s no secret that Apple limits its devices when it comes to connecting external keyboards and mice. Without a USB-A to USB-C adapter most plug-and-play devices can not be used on the Apple Air M1, giving the Surface Laptop 3 the upper hand when it comes to using external keyboards, mice, and headsets.

Display, Touchscreen, and Pen

We know that the MacBook Air M1 and the MacBook Pro M1 don’t come with touchscreens. While the MacBook Air lacks a touch screen, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 continues the Surface legacy of high-quality touch screens across its devices. The touchscreen on the Surface Laptop 3 performs in all the ways that I needed a touch screen to function. It is responsive to the touch, whether using one’s fingertip or using the optional Surface Pen. Some users really appreciate pen navigation on laptops, especially customers with accessibility needs that may use both touch and pen for improved screen interaction/manipulation.

The Surface Laptop 3 Details

Surface Laptop 3 features Instant On, USB-C™ and USB-A ports and dual far-field Studio Mics for great Microsoft Teams calls and dictation in Office. And with Surface Laptop 3, you can have more control over your sensitive information with a removable hard drive for data retention3.

Both the 13.5-inch and 15-inch touchscreen display is unchanged from prior models, and it maintains the signature 3:2 aspect ratio found on all Surface devices. It’s bright and sharp, with good viewing angles and punchy colours.

Like the 15-inch Laptop 3, the 13.5-inch model has an outstanding keyboard, with excellent spacing, travel, and feedback. It’s perhaps my favourite laptop keyboard I’ve used in a long time. Similarly, the trackpad, which is 20% larger than one on the Laptop 2, is smooth and easy to use, with great tracking and palm rejection.
